Yes, it charges batteries. Would I buy another one? Probably not. While the packaging proclaimed a 15 amp charging current, reading through the manual reveals that it will not charge at 15 amps at a 100% duty cycle for long enough to charge a car battery. It does fine charging group 27 marine batteries overnight, but chokes trying to charge a 27 sized car battery. The leads and connectors get warm to the touch, and the unit shut itself off a couple times while charging the car battery. I assume this is due to the car battery's lower internal resistance compared to the marine battery. When charging, the screen will read "6" or "12" instead of showing the actual voltage. Finally, the indicator lights are very dim. They are so dim as to be nearly impossible to see outdoors even when shaded. Two and a half stars.Read Best Reviews of Schumacher XC75 SpeedCharge Battery Charger with Engine Start Here
This is the charger that walmart carries, and I would go another route for a qaulity charger. The one review about the % of charge not being accurate is dead on. It starts to update, then stops, then you stop it and start it again and its 95% full charge. Then is doesn't update, check it again in an hour and its 89%. It will charge your battery, just you have no idea when it is fully charged. I returned the first one that I got bc it didn't update at all, no this next one i have does only some of the time, and it is never accurate. Go another route and avoid the frustration. Will keep this updated when i get a new one.Want Schumacher XC75 SpeedCharge Battery Charger with Engine Start Discount?
I rate this a DO NOT BUY! "Microprocessor controlled" HA! They must have purchased learning disabled, second hand microprocessors. This thing has no idea what it is doing. I have used it on three different batteries with the same miserable results. I bought the Schumacher name because they have been around forever and I trusted the brand. They should be ashamed. I think it charges, a little, when it is confused enough to do the right thing. If you don't get an error then you get a false reading on the charge % or some error code. Just to be fair, I bought a brand new battery for one of my vehicles, it was due anyway, and it showed after ten hours on the charger 93%. Unplug it and plug it back in and it showed 88% @ 13.6 volts. ???? It's brand new and the cooling fan is defective, no question, bearing is bad. Smack it around and the noise quits. I'm returning it and I certainly will not be exchanging it. I have a Sears 10/2 Automatic that is over 25 years old and it runs (charges) circles around this thing. This device is not to be trusted.it wont charge a dead battery. i have to jump it from my truck for a bit then it will star to charge.
