Xantrex Prosine 2.0 Inverter/Charger with Remote Interface - 2000 Watts

Xantrex Prosine 2.0 Inverter/Charger with Remote Interface - 2000 WattsI purchased a Xantex Prosine 2.0 inverter-charger for my 48' sailboat in 2006. The first unit crashed frequently and finally was replaced with a new unit. It also crashed frequently and I was told by the Xantrex technical support person that it was not anything to worry about. It required disconnecting the DC cables, de-powering the unit, then reconnecting. After 2.5 boating seasons use, it crashed again this summer (2008) and would not re-power. I waited over a week at a marina in British Columbia for a new unit to arrive. It was installed (unit three!) and would not work! I waited another week and got a fourth unit. It worked the remainder of the 2008 season (4 months so far), but if it starts crashing like the previous 2 units (the third unit, purchased new, never worked), I will replace it with a DIFFERENT brand.

These units are now made in China and obviously the quality control is unreliable. And what would the Xantrex company do for me after hundreds of dollars of moorage fees and several weeks of lost cruising time and waiting? Absolutely nothing!

Do not buy anything from this company!

I'll second the previous review on the Inverter / Charger unit. I've had one on our boat for about 2 years now, and it's been nothing but a headache.

It doesn't completely crash, but we frequently arrive at the dock to discover that it has shut itself down. It works again when we switch it off and then on again, but it is very, very annoying to have to do this almost every time we go out sailing (if not more than once).

This product clearly has some big problems indeed, the reason I found this product on Amazon is that I've started to look for a replacement. Does anyone have any ideas??

I purchased a factory refurbished Xantrex prosine 2.0 in late 2008 for my fifth wheel trailer. I absolutely loved it. That is until fall of 2010 when I went out to use it. I turned of the switch on the remote and it was flashing two codes. I couldn't find the codes in the manual so I called customer support. After waiting on hold for 30 minutes, I was connected with a man who I believe was based in India. I explained to him about the codes. He said, "I see, you need new inverter". I told him that this unit has only been in actual use for about seven months total and I don't want to buy a new one, I just want this one fixed. He said the company has been bought by an overseas company and they don't import parts to the USA. Part of the reason I bought this inverter was because I figured that if the factory refurbishes them, service should not be a problem.

I told him that I had read on the net that Xantrex would discount a new unit. He said they would discount a new one for me at 30% off of the "highest retail price". I told him I would not buy another Xantrex based on their poor customer support. By the way, the inverter failed when it was not even in use. Another thing. The 120 volt power on the fifth wheel all goes through the inverter. Even when I plugged the fifth wheel in, all of the 120 volt was dead. The inverter would not let power pass through it. Xantrex should be out of business soon the way it is run.

Purchased a ProSine 2.0 in 2007 to install in my boat. It worked fine to start with but in very short time it started acting up, giving me error messages and needing re-starts. After talking with support, it was determined that the unit should be replaced. This is a big deal because this is a fixed, wired type of device and installation is not trivial.

After the second unit went in, it worked fine to start again, but then the errors began. The unit was especially temperamental when operating in inverter mode. It would frequently just quit inverting, regardless of power draw. I even tried opening up the compartment in which it was installed and placing a fan on it to help keep it cool, without success. The only item I was running was a small palm sander and the inverter kept shutting off. Eventually I got fed up and connected a $50 Wall-Mart inverter to my batteries and used that to run the sander. That device worked just fine while the $1000 ProSine couldn't run for more than about 2 minutes at a time.

The Good: As a battery charger, it worked quite nicely, at least my second unit didn't seem to have problems with that. The LCD display is nice and gives good information and diagnostics, which unfortunately, need to be accessed often.

The Bad: Absolutely useless as an inverter. Both my first and second units failed miserably here. The unit was connected and mounted per the manufacturers directions but still failed early and often. Also, when I received my second unit, the remote display would sometimes show garbled characters requiring me to tap the display or re-start to bring back readability.

Summary: This product had potential, but is very poor in execution. It's clear that Xantrex has very low standards for quality and has no respect for their customer. There is a reason that there are so many "refurbished" ProSine 2.0 units available out there now.

Want Xantrex Prosine 2.0 Inverter/Charger with Remote Interface - 2000 Watts Discount?

Just want to reinforce the other negative reviews.

This is a very sophisticated unit, and I was impressed with the amount of customization of the charger and inverter control system. To avoid problems with voltage drop from the battery bank I invested in (very expensive) 350 mcm cable and connectors and high amperage batteries. Testing was okay, but the first time it had to cover an extended power outage it gave up after very few minutes with an error code about battery voltage. Independent testing showed the batteries in peak shape. After that it faiiled immediately upon loss of utility power every time.

Call to customer service basically said the unit was sold as a "consumer grade" product and repair service was not offered. I would have to purchase a replacement!

I won't touch another Xantrex product for life, and advise all my friends to do the same.
