Xantrex Technologies 852-2071 Xpower AC/DC Powerpack Solar With 400 Watt Inverter, Two AC Outlets, U

Xantrex Technologies 852-2071 Xpower AC/DC Powerpack Solar With 400 Watt Inverter, Two AC Outlets, USB Port, And Digital DisplayIf the Xantrex Xpower Powerpack Solar lived up to its specifications, I would rate it 5 stars and consider it well worth the money. That's why I bought it in the first place. Unfortunately, its performance falls short of the manufacturer's claims.

The overall design of the product is very nice. I had considered building something similar based on a how-to article in Popular Science, but the Powerpack is so nicely packaged for only a couple dollars more, I chose to buy it.

The Powerpack disappoints in the amount of energy stored in its battery that is available to power other electronic devices. The battery is specified as 12 volts and 10 amp-hours. As such, I was expecting to get as much as 120 watt-hours from it, but I barely get half that.

As a test, I fully charged the battery using the included AC adapter. By "fully", I mean the unit claimed to be charged. I then ran the built-in LED lights. The manual claims they should run for 48 hours. They ran 27.5 hours for me.

I assumed this performance reflected a bad unit and exchanged it. The new unit performs similarly. Either the battery in the unit performs poorly, or the electronics to monitor and control the battery state-of-charge are weak.

As another example of the poor performance, I charged the unit completely (again based on its built-in indicator that charging is done). It indicated 100 percent charge when I turned on the AC or DC output, but as soon as I plugged in any load, it almost immediately dropped to 70 or even 60 percent. Soon after the unit's indicator dropped to 40 percent, the unit shut itself down.

So, on the one hand, this is a nice unit to carry around, and it does slowly-but-surely charge the internal battery using the included 5 watt solar panel. It does a fine job charging cell phones and iPods, and a barely acceptable job charging a notebook computer. Compared to its specifications, and for that matter my previous experience with the Xantrex Powerpack Mobile Mini, however, the product is a disappointment.

The product information should include these crucial tidbids, which you only find out AFTER buying (by reading the detailed owner's manual): 1) you cannot use it while you are charging it, and 2)if you want to charge it using the sun, it takes 45 HOURS (YES -that's HOURS). I used it at an outdoor festival to power a laptop, and -even thought the manual estimated it would last for up to 4 hours, it pooped out after 1.5 hours. After that, I unplugged and charged it in the sun for a while. It got a lot of interest from people at the festival, who thought it was cool. I think it's cool too. I just wish it worked better.

Many Cons

Battery not "user replaceable" (User manual recommends throwing the whole powerpack out when the battery can no longer take a charge)

If you do take the unit apart to replace the battery, it is an uncommon type not available at battery specialists.

Solar panel is too small to adequately charge the unit. Useful only as a top-up charger.

My unit has locked up twice, where the buttons and display do not work and you need to take it apart to disconnect then reconnect the battery to reboot the internal microcontroller.

Very difficult to take apart (to reboot the unit or change the battery).

AC power adapter puts out too much voltage, causing the unit to complain about an overvoltage situation when it is left plugged in when fully charged.

Loses its charge quickly when not plugged in.

LED lights on both sides of the unit are wired to come on at the same time. No switch to disconnect one bank to double the runtime as a light source.

As a warning, if you do have one, do not leave it off its charger for longer than about 1 month or you can damage the battery.

Length:: --:-Mins

This is a great little unit, I have used it a few times to test just how long it lasts and it never failed to impress. The only problem with this unit is that the digital display is highly inaccurate in displaying the batteries charge level when anything is plugged in and the ac output of devices under 50 watts. I have not experienced any error code problems. I've used this unit to power a small table fan, a laptop computer and some other small draw items. Here are my run times:

Small ac table fan = 3-4 hours on low setting, 3 max on low setting

12 volt dc fan = 5-7 hours on only high setting (0.8 amps 10 watts from walmart)

13.3" macbook = 2.5 hours with lots of processing and display on full brightness

4 hours max with low brightness and light web browsing only (full battery)

acer aspire one = 5-6 hours on low brightness and light browsing (battery charged prior)

netbook

Items that will not run long on this powerpack:

1. powerful entertainment or gaming laptops

2. desktop computers

3. big ac fans

4. high draw dc appliances such as a dc coffee maker, hair dryer and spotlight

5. items with heating elements in general EX: coffee maker, heating blanket, electric heater of any sort (expect 3 min or less run time, just don't even try to plug any of the mentioned items in AT ALL!)

6. big lcd tv's or any crt tv (yes even the 13" rated for this product)

Items that will be damaged by this device due to modified sine wave ac output:

1. rechargeable batteries (your laptop will not be damaged because it has a special transformer (I.E. the power brick)

2. nightlights of any sort

3. rechargeable electric shavers

4. any devices that specify they will only work with pure sine wave power (grid power = pure sine wave. keep in mind that 99.9% of all powerpacks use modified sine wave for ac power)

Bottom line: Don't treat it as if it is a generator or as if you still have power coming in off the grid in an emergency, be conservative and it will last the night. If you have never owned a power pack like this, keep in mind it's just a battery and the solar panel won't make it function like a generator. If you don't know solar, keep in mind this unit has the largest possible solar panel that will fit on the unit, that doesn't mean it will charge in a day like your solar accent lights outside. A full day of sunlight will give you 10-20 percent of overall charge (use this to charge your cellphone or run the efficient built in lights at night). You need to charge this unit every 1-3 months. Failure to do so will cause the internal sla agm battery to sulfate and refuse to charge(your warranty is voided with xantrex for neglect). Realistically don't plug devices in that use more than 70-80 watts if you want reasonable run time (this is true with most powerpacks, even the huge ones). Large items should not be used at all in an emergency power situation. If you want more power and longer run times, buy a 400 watt inverter for your car (please don't kill your car's battery, start it up) or buy a $100-$150 2 cycle generator, especially if you need power for medical devices. This unit should last you at least 5 years before the battery needs to be replaced (10 ah agm battery, nut and bolt terminals, tall style battery = $29 online) A lot of powerpacks use this battery. My campbell hausfeld power pack with this battery is 3 years old and counting with the same battery (runs great too, no loss of power) and my past devices using sla batteries lasted an average 7 years before needing replacement. Treat your battery right and it can last just as long. Feel free to ask any questions, I'll try to respond asap or whenever I can check my inbox.

You can use it to charge your laptop, PDA and your cell phone. But it's not strong enough to even just power a 12" fan.

Interdynamics AFK-12 Arctic Freeze Auto Air Conditioning Smart Charge Recharge Kit - Pack of 1

Interdynamics AFK-12 Arctic Freeze Auto Air Conditioning Smart Charge Recharge Kit - Pack of 1
  • Easy to use gauge that compensates for ambient temperatures for precise air conditioning charging
  • Color coded light and sound indicators for simple, accurate charging
  • Ergonomic trigger handle
  • Push and lock quick connector for fast and easy charging
  • Works with all R-134a air conditioning systems

Interdynamics AFK-12 customer support was helpful. This may supplement the instructions on the unit. As I understand it, you press the round black on button first to turn on the unit it will cycle and beep to show it is on. Then give the black handle a 3 -4 second squeeze to calibrate it to air pressure. The unit will go through its measurement cycle. Connect the hose to the low side coupler and while holding the unit upright (if a freon can is screwed on), squeeze the black handle for only 2 to 4 seconds to get a measurement. A short squeeze will take a measurement, a longer 15 second squeeze will add freon if a freon can is screwed on. The unit will cycle after each 15 second fill.

But always use an additional 2 -4 second squeeze in between the 15 second fills to measure and see if it needs more freon added. I have two of these units in different locations and will have to play with these instructions.

I felt comfortable with the Arctic Freeze Freon Fill kit with guage and UV leak detector and penlight which was simple and worked well. I found no leak. Freon level set and AC blowing cold. :)

I have never charged an ac system and I found this very easy to use. I have a 1996 Ford E150 Van. I bought this charge kit and the InterDynamics RLS-134 13oz. Refrigerant R134a with Leak Sealer. My low pressure port was right up front (if you don't know where yours is, just Google your car make and model AC system). You just start your car, turn on your AC to max, screw the can into the receptacle, connect it to your low pressure port, press the test button and wait. It will show "low Charge" if your system is low. Shake the can and press the trigger for about 15 seconds. Press the test button again, and repeat the process until the test shows green "charged". I needed two cans for my van to reach full charge, and it has been 5 weeks with COLD air still blowing. I love it!

The first clue you should be aware of since my experience with this Charger is fully explained in the first Troubleshooting Guide's FAQ: "ISSUE/CONDITION Green light does not light after adding 2+ cans (more than 24 OZ) of R-134a refrigerant (only White Light lit); POSSIBLE CAUSE AC System Leak OR TXV A/C System with rapidly cycling compressor; REMEDIES/ACTION Check for leaking oil on refrigerant lines & A/C components. Seek Professional Help. Check vent temperature. If temperature cold, stop charging." This last sentence is in my opinion the first clue that this Charges isn't so SMART. I order it simply because I wanted an easy way to check systems and to dispense refrigerant. Was I sadly disappointed. Both vehicles I own, a 97 Merc and an 07 PT Cruiser which what I believe have perfectly working A/C systems failed. The Charger would only register the White Light -Low Charge. After connecting a can of R-134a refrigerant I found the Charger's connecting tube almost to short to allow a can of refrigerant to be held correctly. I also found that trying to charge the systems of both vehicles that little if any refrigerant was dispensed after 15+ minutes on each vehicle by squeezing the unit's trigger in 15-second increments. Little if any of the fluid was dispensed since the can still seemed full even though some fluid must have because the can of refrigerant did get cooler on certain tries. I know that both car's cooling temperature here in central Texas blows cold air down to 45-50 degrees since I keep a thermometer on the air vents. I should therefore know that both systems in these vehicles work efficiently and correctly and the Charger simply does not live up to it's advertisement. I just wish I had weighed the Charger and can of refrigerant on my postal scale before connecting it to the A/C system so I could later weight it again to ascertain just how much fluid was dispensed, if any. If you should purchase this Charger be aware that the BLACK button is the "On and Off". I didn't read anywhere that this button was anything but "power" which is printed on the device -at first I expected the button to glow or something. I would not recommend this device.

Want Interdynamics AFK-12 Arctic Freeze Auto Air Conditioning Smart Charge Recharge Kit - Pack of 1 Discount?

I purchased this product to check the charge level on a 98 Pontiac Bonneville and 2004 Chrysler Town and Country. I figured that since it is a computerized "smart" unit, that also measures outside ambient temperature, I would not have any trouble. Well, after dropping $44 at Advance Auto here is my experience.

Firstly, Reading Is Fundamental. For those born in the mid to late 60's you may remember the RIF campaign. When I took the first measurements with the unit it read "low charge". I ran the check three times for verification. I was about to go pick up some R134a when I notice something on the end of the blue quick connector tube. It read "push to engage". I went back to the low side service port and using my thumb....."Pushed to Engage". There was an audible "click" sound which confirmed you were solidly connected to the low side port.

Secondly, the blue hose could be another six to eight inches longer. If the low side service port is located low next to compressors, radiators, etc. you may have a hard time recharging the A/C per the instructions. The R134a can must be held as upright as possible when recharging A/C. Failure to do so can cause liquid refrigerant to drain into the smart-charge thus causing the trigger to stick. Depending upon where the low side port is located, you may have to get underneath the vehicle.

Thirdly, according to the unit, both vehicles are overcharged. It was close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit when I did the testing so I am not sure if that was a factor. The package information says the black center button is a Start/Calibrate button. I am not sure if the calibration is manual or automatic. Neither do the instructions state how to calibrate if it is deemed required. I am planning to borrow my neighbor's non-computerized dial unit to verify if both vehicles are overcharged.

I've been using this product for a couple of days now with my USCC HTC Desire and it is great. The display is brightly lit and easy to access. I like that it doesn't auto scan. The buttons are easy to use. I set my channel and since I drive often for work, I got a chance to see how clear the sound was in four different towns. The fact that is uses Gomadics tip technology is great, however my experience in the past with this company is that their tips can arrive kinda wonky. Customer service, however is great. I highly recommend this product.

Got this to put in my little RV. I was looking for something small enough to not draw down

the one battery I have in the Coach. Installed under a cabinet close to the battery and

ran 10 ga wire to it. Plug in the Coach electrical cord to it and turned it on. It will

run a Radio or TV or the Microwave or the Fan in my A/C but not the A/C itself which would

take about a 3000 watt inverter which would drain my battery really fast! I watched TV and

listened to the radio for 2 days and finally ran the battery down running the A/C fan on the

second day. It's a little workhorse. Good for the price too!

The first one died within about 6 weeks. That is not a good sign... but Cobra made good and sent me a new one which has been working flawlessly for > year. I like this unit because the fan is active, not passive. So if you are using it to, say, charge a phone or run a laptop with a charged battery, (e.g. not much current draw) the fan stays off. As a noise-freak, that makes me happy. The power rating seems realistic, unlike two other units I tried. I'm quite happy with it, minus the dead original of course.

Bought this for tailgating at Buffet. I was actually able to hook it up to a lawn tractor battery and power a blender. I wasn't sure if the battery would have enough juice, but it worked great and was much easier to transport than a car or marine battery. Testing at home showed the low voltage alarms and whatnot work very well. I just wish this came with a cigarette lighter cord for those times you're just using it on low-amp devices the way some other inverters do. Also, I agree with some other reviews that the mounting tab locations look like they would make getting the screws in there difficult. I haven't tried mounting it, but the edges of the case definitely would get in the way. Creative DIYers would find a way to make it work, so no big deal.

Used the Cobra CPI 880 800 watt inverter connected to a small solar/battery setup on a shed with no power. It runs a light, small radio, police scanner and a dremel pretty flawlessly. Of course I used a power strip but the inverter did fine. Like previous reviews stated its a little tough to mount this unit because the unit partially blocks the base. But just used some bolt head wood screws versus phillips head. open end wrench tightened them right down to the base. Used 0 gauge battery wire on run from battery. No complaints.

Mounted on my boat. I noticed that some has issue with the mounting brackets. This is probbly from those with little 'handy man' type experiances. All you do is mark your screw holes and then screw in one side. Then put the screws in the other side at an angle. Easy peasy.

The cooling fan only runs when it is needed, which is nice. Good value for the money. I'm using it to power a 750w blower (to inflate ski tubes etc) and it works great. Note: don't ever mount these in your boat enginge compartment (or you may go BOOM).

These units need too much juice to plug into a 12v cig lighter style, you need a direct connection to the battery with 2gauge wire. The included cords are fine, and have the clips to directly attach to a car battery

Rally 7471 Portable 8 in 1 Power Source and Jumpstart Unit with Hand Generator
  • Jumpstart any 12 volt battery quickly and safely
  • Emergency hand generator charges battery
  • 140 watt inverter operates a variety of household products
  • USB power source to operate and recharge portable electronic devices
  • 260 PSI air compressor for high pressure inflation of tires and more

Just received the Rally 7471 in the mail today, it is charging as we speak. First impressions of this is a great American product. I can't believe no one else has already thought of this. The packaging was great, the instructions are very clearly written and easy to understand. I purchased this to be able to use while camping / documentary out in nature. The pros for me with this product is the portability (light weight), power inverter for charging laptops and camera gear, and the ability to hand charge the whole unit when not near outlets or vehicle.

The manual says that after pulling the charging handle for approx. 3 mins there will be enough power to jump start a vehicle battery, and that powering a laptop will last around an hour and a half. I am going to take it through it's paces and update this review.

Thanks alot Rally!

***UPDATE***

actually got around to testing the unit out downgraded my initial 5 stars to 3 stars, and here's why. After fully charging I plugged in my laptop and watched a movie. The laptop draws at max 60 watts, the battery lasted about an hour and a half (what the manual says). The recharge from the wall outlet takes about 26 hours (has red, amber and green color changing LED for battery status). After draining I used the pull handle, pulls like a normal gasoline lawnmower engine. The manuals says that after pulling for 3 mins there will be enough power to jump start your car battery. I don't know about that, but it ran my laptop for another 5 mins.

Pretty weak battery performance, but overall good little product, light weight and has all the accessories.

Buy Rally 7471 Portable 8 in 1 Power Source and Jumpstart Unit with Hand Generator Now

Decided to pick this up based on the positive reviews (which I suspect could be from company employees, perhaps). I charged the unit for 48 hours continuously. Then, I plugged in my laptop and used it as normal. This draws between just 40-50 watts using my watt meter. At the 45 minute mark, the unit was dead. The packaging estimated 1hr and 6 minutes of run time with a 90 watt draw, which is twice the wattage that I consumed. So, I figured that I'll just go ahead and see how much juice I get out of pull starting it for 3 minutes, and do another run test.

Well, on the second pull, the pull cord became fully extended and will not return back to it's retracted position. I couldn't help but notice on the bottom where it says MADE IN CHINA. Well, that explains that. Hopefully I can return this piece of junk for a refund.

I am disappointed. I used the hand generator , and the cord came out , and now refuses to go back in position. If any of you are trilled about the hand generator feature, well it is a gimmick, I should have taken the owners reviews into consideration. I hope i can get a refund. Stay clear of that product people.

I just received this unit today. It is charging as I type. I like the hand generator feature and that's the main reason I bought this Unit. I don't expect too much from this power pack since it's only 140 watt inverter. I have a 600 watt inverter power pack from MotoMaster Eiminator. It works good but no hand generator. Will update this review if there's any problem or something worth mentioning.

EDIT: The Rally powered my 7" portable TV for 5 1/2 hours.

I want to second what others have said. The unit looks great, but it doesn't hold much of a charge. It might be fine for jumps and pumps, but as an AC power source, it's very poor. I charged the unit fully (24 hours) and ran a laptop off it that pulls about 60 watts. As others have reported, I was able to run the laptop for about an hour before the Rally ran out of juice.

If you want it only for an emergency jump/pump or two, I'm sure it's fine. Also for *briefly* powering an AC device that has no batteries.

As a backup for a laptop (or any device that has batteries) it's terrible: you'll get far more juice out of a spare battery for a tiny fraction of the weight.

**REVIEW UPDATED 12/21/2012...see end of review for updated info.**

I've been around the block with consumer-grade two-way radios that I use for backpacking, camping and general Boy Scout activities. I've tried Uniden, Midland and Motorola, but always come back to Motorola. Midlands broke and Unidens don't have great range and can't produce clear enough audio for me.

I learned after hobbling along with my last non-Moto set (Uniden G-227) that Motorola really is the way to go for clarity, range and features. Audio clarity is important to me because there's nothing more maddening than muddy audio and having to ask the person on the other end to keep repeating until you can understand what they've said.

PROS:

* Robust design.

* Bright color makes it harder to lose.

* Waterproof from basic elements. Living in Florida, this is important.

* Great audio clarity.

* Decent range (certainly not 35 miles, but a more realistic one-mile+ range in forested and flat terrain).

* Richly featured for a consumer radio.

* PTT power adjustable buttons (one H, one L) means no more fidgeting with menu settings when you need higher power transmissions.

* Comes with a rechargeable battery pack for each radio.

* Emergency LED light is very handy.

* NOAA weather receiver.

* USB chargeable.

CONS:

* Currently lacks charging station (allegedly to be released soon, according to Motorola).

* Wish it had a carrying case instead of the plastic belt clip.

* Wish it had more range in typical conditions, but this is not a pro radio set.

I'm a realist when it comes to consumer two-way radios. I don't expect an actual 35-mile range and don't actually need 35 miles. That's what cell phones are for, but of course, if you are in a very remote area, a cell signal may not be available.

I was impressed with the menu of features on this radio and really needed to move up to a radio with NOAA weather capabilities. When you are one of the adults responsible for as many as 75 boys on an outing, you really need to be on alert for their safety. I like the overall quality of the radio and have never been disappointed with a Moto two-way. I still have my Talkabout 250, which has been in use for close to 10 trouble-free years now. It's still crystal-clear and transmits well for a compact FRS radio, which was another reason why I came back to and will remain with Motorola.

This radio set deserves five stars for its performance and deep feature list, but more importantly, for me, being able to hear transmissions clearly is a key element. I'm happy with this radio for what it is: an effective communications tool.

** 12/21/2012 UPDATE **

Not changing the five stars rating, especially after taking the radios camping in dense woodlands this past weekend. My daughter went hiking with her girlfriend and was well beyond a mile away when she called me on the radio. Her voice was loud and crystal clear. She also found the built-in LED light very helpful when she couldn't find her own flashlight. Honestly, I didn't think much about the radio's emergency light, but it came in handy!

Initial testing in FRS urban setting, got about 1 to 1.5 miles useful transmission from the outside airport curbside to the other radio inside the apartment. Easy and simple to set up. Regular earphones won't fit. Weatherproof claim I don't know yet but it looks and feels sturdy. Built in LED light is a nice feature. Wish it could be more compact.

Love them! I bought a pair of these walkie-talkies for my boys (ages 4 and 6), knowing that the novelty would wear off pretty quickly for them, and I'd be left with a decent pair of radios for driving, hunting, fishing and other cool activities. But, man... I didn't know how great these things were when I ordered them.

Their range and clarity is startling. They have a built in LED flashlight that is really handy and more bells and whistles than I'll ever use. They are weatherproof, which has already come in handy when one of my knuckleheaded ankle-biters left his radio in the backyard where it was hit with our sprinklers, a light rain shower and a massive amount of dew on one night and a hard frost the next. I found the radio, turned it on and it worked like a charm.

The only problem so far is how much my boys LOVE these things. I may never get to put them in my "Outdoor" bag as I'd hoped when I ordered them.

They are big, easily the size of a full-grown man's hand, and they are rechargeable. In a perfect world, I'd like them to be a bit more compact and allow me to replace the batteries rather than recharge them (when I'm camping or fishing, I have access to loose batteries, but no electricity for charging.). But, these are still outstanding consumer-level radios that won't disappoint.

I connected up the battery maintainer to my 8N 6 volt tractor and so far, every time I have went to start the tractor the battery has been hot! I was really concerned about the positive ground on the tractor. No problem.

Other battery maintainer manufacturers couldn't assure me it would work or how to hook it up.

I have one on my 1973 truck that is garaged and infrequently driven. It sat for 10 years with maybe 200 miles per year. No battery problems.

As an Amateur (Ham) Radio (K6OL) and Navy MARS (NNN0BJB) Operator, this car charger for my MacBook Pro is a "MUST HAVE." Now I don't have to worry about where the nearest power source will be at the end of my 10 hour battery life on my MacBook Pro. Now I'm able to use my MacBook Pro 'in the field' as long as I need. Once I plugged it in, I was pleasantly surprised to notice that there were NO power surges, or a noticeable drain (however sight) on the internal battery after it was plugged into my vehicle's power source.

Secondly, I was impressed that the order was processed and shipped promptly. I was even more pleasantly surprised to receive the package TWO days sooner than what I was initially informed by the automated system @ Amazon.com.

Frankly, I'm a bit perplexed when I recall my numerous conversations I've had with the Tech Support 'geeks' at APPLE and the APPLE STORE, and Best Buy. Not one person (including supervisors) knew anything about any product that would allow me to operate my MacBook from a 12 v power source OTHER than a 12 VDC to 110 VAC converter which is not only dangerous (fire hazard) but a complete waste of power.

Yes, this was my first order from Amazon. NO, I do not work for them nor was paid or had any incentives offered for my review.

I look forward to ordering through this venue again and hope I have the same experience.

Merry Christmas folks!

Ed

CTEK 56-674 Battery Charger

CTEK 56-674 Battery Charger
  • Water and dust resistant
  • Designed for safety, spark free hook-up, reverse polarity protected
  • Patented desulfation function
  • Fully automatic for charging and maintenance
  • 25 amp output for RV, car, boat, shop

A long time ago (3 years whoa) I bought a ctek 3amp charger/maintainer and used it for my genset so it would always be ready to go (it's an autostart but does not have a battery maintainer). I was amazed at how well the battery was maintained by the little 3A charger.

EDIT: 12/2012

I've had my 25000 for a couple years now and a few people have emailed me with questions I did not answer previously. I'll summarize them here

1 reliability like a charm. Unlike the 7000 series (7A), the 25000 (25A) series has an internal ducted cooling fan which only comes on during high current charging for long life.

2 featurs it has the desulphation mode like the other chargers, but can handle larger cells. Other than that it does NOT have the ability to select SLA (gel cells), wet cells, or marine cells

3 temperature sensor unlike it's smaller cousins, there are 3 wires at the end of the fixed cable (which does not work with their accessory system as it does not have the required connector) the 3rd wire is a temperature sensor designed to be held close to the battery during charge so that voltages are adjusted for cold or hot weather and battery temperature. This helps protect the battery from overcurrent or overcharge. To sum it up in one word its a very fast charger, and safe at the same time NOTHING like the old crank up the timer based on the voltmeter chargers.

Those where the 3 questions I was asked now everyone knows. BTWI just ordered another one of these as I loaned mine to a friend who uses ctek's smaller units and he was so impressed he gave me the money to buy a new one as he liked mine so much.

back to the original review now

I later bought 2 of their 7002 series chargers these were 7 Amp capacity and had extra features for dealing with a wider range or chemistries like the spiracell optima batteries I use in many applications. I even installed the under $20 dash mount charger interface in a spare din opening in my dash it was a 30 minute job but gave me the convenience of a plug in for my charger without having to pop the hood and clip it on just plug the charger into the dash outlet, and it included a battery guage of blinking leds red for discharged, yellow for discharging, and green for full. They blink all the time and use very little power

Since amazon does not carry the 25000 I became involved in discussions with CTEK and was shipped a unit for evaluation of my battery banks that are paralleled from multiple 12VDC cells. the 25000's closest relative is the 7002 and it features many of the same "stairstep" leds for indication of how the charge is progressing.

At 25A, it is the most powerful CTEK charger to date, equivalent to about 3.5 7002 chargers and priced at about 3.0 7002 chargers, so it's more economical if you have a battery bank. I am very pleased that they kept the battery desulphating features that ctek is known for in the 25000. The extra current is nice to have when you have 4 100AH cells in parallel for a 400 AH battery bank that occasionally needs topping off or desulphating. Ctek has always been at the forefront of chargers and accessories to go with them they are rated for wet environments and mine have been rained on more than once without a failure. If you have multiple batteries such as an RV with 2 deep cycle 12VDC cells and 1 engine starting battery, this is the ideal charger when you find AC. And with 25A, it most likely can power your 12VDC low power devices without draining your battery bank. When I say MOST that excludes the microwave, big screen TV but includes the 12VDC lighting inside the RV and a small TV set. The advantage to you is when you pull into an RV park with AC power you can recharge your deep cycle cells and run the inside lighting off the CTEK 25000 at the same time with 25 amps of supply current.

I borrowed the flir microbolimeter from the lab becuse the unit gets warm, but checking the ctek connectors they stayed relatively cool for running a 25 A current through them. That's impressive in and of itself.

I would highly recommend this to RV users, solar users, or anyone with a battery bank of 12V cells in parallel. Its rated for 50-500 AH storage capacity and represents the top of the line in CTEK power chargers.

Charges fast and is smart enough to extend the life of my batteries. So called automatic chargers don't do the same things this one can do. The auto float is an awesome feature. Other chargers will continue to "cook" your battery.

I've used three other chargers and the "Multi US 25000" is the best! It saved three of my expensive AGM batteries. Sure, I wish it had a digital readout 'cause I like eye-candy but I'm not too lazy to put the volt meter on the battery(s). Nice heavy cables/clamps and soldered too. Temp sensor on the positive clamp. I do wish they had made the battery cable in such a way that I could reach further than 31 inches between the positive and negative battery posts (battery bank). You can charge up to 500 amp hours worth of batteries at a time.

I received this new CTEK US25000 and it worked for 1 day! I contacted the seller and he said he would get back to me, so far not a word in 6 months!

I have used CTEK battery US3300's and never had a problem, as in most first runs probably just working out the bugs, as for the seller, not good customer service.

Thanks, Ron

Buy Optima 8002-002-FFP RedTop Group 34 Starting Battery Now

I bought the red top in July, 2009, for a kit car I am building. Just got around to installing in car and find it will not hold a charge. Contacted Optima for their help under their 3 year free replacement (also shown on Amazon web page) guarantee. Optima says Amazon is not an authorized seller of their products (even though there are thousands of their batteries listed on Amazon), and they could not do anything for me. Amazon says the battery cannot be returned to them or replaced. What do you think is going on here? Smells like fraud on someone's part to me. Was promised a call back from an Amazon supervisor, but nothing yet.

Update, after discussions with two customer service reps. and a supervisor, Amazon has agreed to honor the warranty from Optima. They will reimburse me the cost of the battery and I can then order another one. Not sure why they could not just send me a replacement. But, I am getting another one, and that is all I wanted.

The Optima Battery is the best battery to buy if you want to make sure there is no corrosion or leakage.

Want Optima 8002-002-FFP RedTop Group 34 Starting Battery Discount?

PURCHASED THE OPTIMA BATTERY BECAUSE OF THE GREAT REVIEWS. AMAZON PRICE WAS ABOUT 40 TO 50 DOLLARS CHEAPER THAN I COULD GET IN TOWN, PLUS NO TAX. PREVIOUSLY HAD TWO DURALAST GOLD BATTERIES THAT LASTED LESS THAN A YEAR WITH MY 7.3 DIESEL ENGINE. ID RATHER SPEND A LITTLE MORE $$ THAN DEAL WITH THE AGGRAVATION OF BEING STRANDED SOMEWHERE. LETS HOPE THESE BATTERIES LIVE UP TO THEIR REPUTATION.

I bought these batteries for a 2004 Dodge truck with the Diesel engine. One of the stock batteries split open at the negative post. The other was about to split. Both stock batteries were leaking acid. I bought the Optima batteries based on my experience with never having one leak acid, break, or clean corrosion around the post. The new Optima batteries are working fine, will see how they do five years from now.

Thanks,

Adonis
