2013 MODEL PIONEER AVH-X1500 DVD / AVHX1500 DVD In-Dash 6.1 Touchscreen

2013 MODEL PIONEER AVH-X1500 DVD / AVHX1500 DVD In-Dash 6.1 Touchscreen
  • Enjoy robust multimedia features with AppRadio functionality
  • Intuitive user interface and touchscreen controls
  • Pandora Radio Ready for iPhone
  • 3 RCA Preouts (2V) and Navigation Ready
  • 6.1-inch WVGA touchscreen with 16 9 aspect ratio

I bought this unit to install in my Toyota Sequoia. I searched everywhere for this unit finally found it on Amazon for less than $250. The install was simple and the unit looks good I'm my Toyota.

This is the newer version of the AVH-1400DVD with a bigger screen (6.1 versus 5.8), The mixtrax, and the ability to use App Radio a huge plus for me so basically you get the App Radio and all the other features of The AVH-1400DVD for the same price.

To use the App radio you have to get the Pioneer CDIOU201S cable and hook it up to the rear of the radio. If you want the ability to use the apps and watching a DVD without having the vehicle parked I would get the Microbypass interface also an easy install.

I've had this deck for over a month and I get a lot of comments, the deck sounds great running on my factory speakers. I recommend this deck for anyone looking for a nice deck for a cheap price.

Preface: Do you like to read books? If so then this review is for you! LOL

I've had this radio installed for around a month now. Let me start off by saying I'm a bit of a technophile I like electronics, and I'm also a software developer. So I have rather high standards for both hardware and software. Perhaps I nitpick more than most, but at least you'll find a number of details about this radio (specifically, things it cannot do or does not do well) that you may not find elsewhere. I originally rated this radio as 4/5 stars after installing, but I've bumped it down to 3/5 after becoming more familiar with the various limitations. I don't think many of these limitations are specific to this model more than likely they also apply to the more expensive Bluetooth model, etc.

I bought this radio for the more "advanced" things it can do. Like playing movies and TV shows off of external drives, hooking car PCs up to it, etc. I'm not going to go into a lot of detail about what it does well, because I think other reviewers have covered the positives. I'm going to point out some negatives that I did not discover until actually using the unit.

**USB Drives

I planned on plugging my 1 TB external HDD into this, and thus always having full access to the huge number of TV shows and movies without having to swap discs or even USB drives. Unfortunately the radio would not recognize the drive at all. After some digging through the specifications I found that the radio only works with FAT and FAT32 formatted drives, which is pretty rare nowadays when it comes to large drives. Most are NTFS, which the radio will not recognize. You will have to reformat your drive to FAT32 if you want to use it with this radio so be warned before you spend many hours loading it up with files. Note that FAT32 does not leave as much free space on the drive as NTFS, which is one of the reasons it is being used less and less.

**USB Audio playback

This portion of the radio is decent. You can throw your MP3, etc, music files into folders on your USB drive, and the radio plays them back. Now, as other reviewers have noted, the radio is very strange about listing that music when you're looking at the files directly. It does not sort by file name (actually it doesn't sort by anything at all, which is the oddity). Instead it lists files in the order they were copied onto the drive. So for all intents and purposes, the files appear randomly when viewing them directly. The solution is to create a music database. This is done by pushing a single button, which prompts the radio to find every song, extract the song info (title, album, artist, etc), and create a database. Once you've done that the songs are properly sorted by title as one would expect. Any album art is also displayed, which prompted me to go back and spend the time to fix up a number of my MP3s, as when I ripped music way back when I didn't bother including album art. It's nice seeing the album picture of the current song that's one of my favorite things about having an LCD display for a radio.

If you make any changes to the music on your USB drive the radio will recognize the change, and ask you if you want to rebuild the music database again. I'm just not sure why it can't do all this automatically in the background, which would also solve the oddity I mentioned above about the file sorting.

When playing an MP3 the radio shows two small icons a folder icon and a music icon and next to each is the folder number and song number. So if you are on song 5 of a particular folder, it will show a 5 next to the music icon. What the radio does not do, and what I really miss, is that it doesn't show you the total number of songs in the current folder. So I know I'm on song 5, but out of how many? Most people rip their CDs into folders, that way you can jump from folder to folder to move from album to album. I want to see 5/14, to know I'm on the 5th song of 14.

**USB video playback

The radio does not recognize a number of popular video container formats, like 3GP, MP4 and MKV. It won't even list files with those extensions. Considering those are the video formats used by modern electronics like smart phones and tablets, it is rather inconvenient that the radio cannot play them.

I tried playing an AVI with DIVX video encoding and MP3 192kbps audio. For some reason it says "Unsupported audio format" and plays only the video. It does properly play a video with a 110kbps audio stream, so perhaps it doesn't play 192kbps? I've got a couple other AVI files that it says it cannot read as well. I have yet to figure out the exact limitations as far as bitrate, etc, that the radio does not support.

It does play many of my other videos perfectly, however I was disappointed early on with the number of videos that it cannot play. I was hoping for better versatility and compatibility in this day and age. Reencoding videos is not a fun nor fast process.

Did you notice above, where I mentioned the oddity of how the Pioneer does not sort files by name, and they appear in the order they were copied onto the USB drive? That applies to videos too, however in this case it's much worse, because there isn't any database function for videos! So that means whenever you navigate videos, the order of the files is essentially random. I have a folder full of Spongebob episodes for my preschooler. When I go into that folder they aren't sorted neatly by season and episode, as I have them named. It's just a hodgepodge of randomness. That is not cool.

**USB Pictures

The JPEG picture loading is rather slow (scans down the screen from top to bottom over the course of a second or two). There is also a noticeable flickering in areas of the picture with fine detail. I think the screen might be interlaced and renders every other line each pass, which causes flickering where there are pronounced horizontal lines in the picture.

**GUI

The GUI is moderately responsive (don't think it's super smooth like an iPhone or modern Android phone the scrolling menus, etc, are laggy). It is definitely faster than the older model AVH-P1400DVD my local Walmart has on display (for $80 more too, LOL). However it is still somewhat laggy when scrolling up and down through song lists. When you navigate from one folder to another there is a delay as the files appear one at a time.

I'm disappointed in the lack of customization in the GUI. For example I can't control what kind of information is displayed or where, or font sizes, etc. There are only a handful of color schemes to choose from (5 I think, just your basic primary colors), and just a few animated backgrounds. The Spectrum Analyzer animated background lags behind the actual music so bad that at first I thought it was just purely random motion, until I looked closely and saw that it did seem to crudely follow the music to some extent. If you enable the Spectrum Analyzer background then it automatically disables the album cover art picture (the SA animation is shown in its place). Since the cover art display is one of my favorite things about having a full screen LCD radio, well, that's two strikes against the Spectrum Analyzer for me.

**Display

*Resolution

For its size, the screen is high enough resolution to look sharp and clear. I would consider it a "retina" display simply because it is far enough away from your eyes (unlike cell phones and tablets, which you use closer to your face) that it isn't possible to make out individual pixels. It is very crisp and clear. The previous generation to the AVH-X1500 DVD (the AVH-P1400 DVD) has a much lower resolution screen that looks very pixelated, so the display on this radio is a big improvement.

*Polarization

One downside is the polarization. If you wear a good pair of polarized sunglasses you will find that the display is quite dark. If I tilt my head just slightly to the left the polarization lines up with that of the display and it becomes completely black. If I tilt my head a little to the right of center the display becomes brighter. The display polarization should have been aligned optimally with this in mind that many people would be viewing it with polarized sunglasses. Thus the display is much harder to see in daylight with polarized sunglasses than non-polarized sunglasses.

*Brightness

The backlight is normally plenty bright for daytime use. However, the display backlight becomes dimmer when your headlights are on as it should so you aren't blinded by it at night. The problem is that the dimming level is fixed. It's all or nothing if the car lights are on the display dims to a preset level. The radio ignores the variable dimmer control of your vehicle (and mine is definitely wired correctly). So in those situations when it's bright out but you need to use your headlights (like wet road conditions, rain, etc), the radio display will become too dim to see very well. I've had to use my headlights even when I needed to wear my sunglasses, and in that case the display is completely impossible to see. If the radio had proper variable lighting then you could turn up your gauge dimmer all the way and the radio brightness would also be at maximum, but Pioneer cut corners on that one.

**Physical controls

*Control lighting

The buttons along the left edge of the radio are customizable, in that you can set the RGB color. However, they completely ignore the dimmer / headlight level. Only the screen backlight gets dimmer when your headlights are on the physical buttons always remain at full brightness. You cannot control the brightness of the buttons at all, only the color. Thus at night they are pretty bright brighter than my gauges or anything else on my dash. This is another area Pioneer cut corners with this radio.

*The Mute button is directly below the Volume Down button and is easy to hit by accident. I've muted it a couple times when I was just trying to turn it down a little. Physically there isn't any kind of bump or divider separating the volume and mute buttons the whole thing is perfectly smooth across all 3 buttons. That exacerbates the problem and makes it even more likely to accidentally mute when you didn't mean to. If you press the Mute button again it unmutes the radio and it returns to the previous volume level. However, when the radio is muted and you press Volume Up or Volume Down the volume jumps down to 0. Coupled with how easy it is to accidentally press Mute instead of Volume Down, that gets rather annoying. I accidentally press Mute, then hit Volume Down or Up and then I have to scroll all the way back up to my previous volume level manually. I think pressing Volume Up or Down should just unmute and go back to the previous level.

*The eject button does not function when the vehicle is off. I'm not sure if that is a bad thing or good. The OEM radio the Pioneer replaced could eject when the car was off (and it was a 6 disc changer), which was convenient to run out to the car and grab a CD without having to mess with the keys. On the other hand, perhaps it's good that the disc can't be ejected without the keys, as a security type thing.

**FM Radio

*Radio reception is markedly worse than the OEM radio this Pioneer replaced, or the factory radio in my Nissan Quest, or any of the other vehicles I've ever operated. One particular station I listened to regularly for the last 20 years has so much static that I can no longer listen to it. I had to pull the radio out of the dash to connect an LCD screen to it, so while I was at it I disconnected and reconnected the antenna to make sure it was well seated. Unfortunately the antenna connection wasn't the problem the radio just has suboptimal FM reception.

**External LCD

I installed a Performance Teknique Icbm-9939 12.2" Ceiling Mount Flip-down Monitor (see my review of that product it's a good LCD for the money) for the kids to watch movies in the back seat. The good is that the video output works exactly as expected. Further, if you connect an external A/V source (like a game system the Wii is 12V which makes it well suited for car use) the radio will pass that video through to the external A/V output too. I was a little concerned it wouldn't but that works as it should.

HOWEVER, there is a major, major limitation when it comes to using an external LCD with this radio. Most car LCD monitors have wireless infrared audio output, which allows people in the back to listen to the audio with wireless headphones so everyone else doesn't have to hear it too. Here's the problem with the Pioneer it has no fixed-level audio output (at least none that I could find). What this means is that if you run your audio output line to the LCD panel, as I have done, then when you turn the volume down or mute the radio, it also affects the output volume to the LCD panel and thus to the headphones. In other words, it is impossible to have the kids listen to a movie using only headphones so the driver doesn't have to hear it. Now, I anticipated up front that the Pioneer was not advanced enough to work as the OEM radio in my Nissan Quest, which allows the kids to listen to a movie via headphones while the speakers play something entirely different out loud, like the radio or CD. I figured the Pioneer could not do that, and it doesn't. But the fact that the wireless headphone capability of my LCD panel is totally useless because of the Pioneer is a big let down. There's no point in the kids using headphones when the movie has to be blaring out the speakers for them to work.

**Powering on

When turning the car on, the radio start up time is fair, but not great. For example if you were playing a movie off of a DVD or USB drive it will have to reload / buffer the movie, which takes a few seconds. I have a Nissan Quest with a factory entertainment system and it always resumes instantly (I assume it buffers several seconds of the DVD into memory). The Pioneer does not work that smoothly there is a few second delay.

Some reviews have complained about the radio "forgetting" what MP3 it was last playing when you start the car. I have also seen this many times now. It seems to me that the radio only occasionally saves the current place in a song. When you start the car all power to the radio is pulled abruptly, and it doesn't have time to save the current position. So when it powers back on it has to resume to wherever it saved last. Often that means it jumps back into the song you played before the last one. Yeah, that's annoying. It doesn't do it every time though. Maybe one of four times I start the car.

**Pioneer Mixtrax

Pioneer Mixtrax on this radio is a complete joke. I really don't know why they wasted time developing this, because to me it is useless. What it is supposed to do is analyze your music, find songs with a similar tempo, then kind of jump from one song to another and mix them up. It has various audio effects (some of which are pretty cool) to "blend" from one song to another. You can set it to play a song for up to a certain amount of time say 45 seconds then it will jump to another song. Now, for starters, the type of music I listen to is not conducive to this. Maybe it is useful for dance or rave music or something that's pure beat, but for 90% of "normal" music, it's simply annoying. Nothing is as grating as getting into the flow of a song to have it abruptly yanked out from under you.

So what I did was set Mixtrax to always play the entire song, that way at least I could make use of the neat transition effects from one song to another. I discovered 2 major issues with this. First of all, it still cuts off a significant portion of the song it lops off a full 20 seconds off the end of the song. Now, when I'm listening to Norwegian Wood and I don't get to hear where Lennon burns down his girlfriend's flat because she made him sleep in the bathtub well, that messes up my day. So it's a nonstarter for me right there because it still truncates the music.

But here's the real killer Mixtrax destroys the music fidelity. If you have this radio then listen to a song with good highs and lows, and turn Mixtrax on and off and on and off and listen closely. It totally cuts off the highs and the lows. It just kills the fidelity entirely. I think I know why when Mixtrax is running the radio as to reprocess all the audio on the fly that is how it adds effects to the song. The CPU / software in the radio is simply not powerful enough, so the bitrate has to be reduced and thus the fidelity is destroyed.

So even for those of you that listen to the exact right kind of music that Mixtrax would be useful for, it's no good because it greatly reduces the audio quality of the music.

**A/V inputs

The radio has 3 different inputs for A/V:

*Aux input, which is just audio only. This is for plugging into the headphone jack of your iPod, phone, etc, so you can play the audio out of the radio. That works fine, and is nice when I want to stream some internet radio station from my phone through my radio. The audio was good and clear sounded great.

*A/V input, which is full video and audio input. I use the A/V input to hook up a Raspberry Pi computer to it. You can also hook up things like Wiis, XBox, etc anything with a video output. As I mention above, this is passed through to the Video Output too, so it can be viewed on external LCDs if you have them installed. It would be nice to be able to change the A/V button's icon in the menu. The icon is a video camera, and I'm not sure how many people would be plugging video cameras into their car radio, so it's probably not very applicable.

*Rear view camera. I have not hooked one up yet, but the radio will automatically switch to this video source when you put it in reverse (if you have that wired to the radio). It is nice having that independent of the A/V input so you can use both a backup camera and game system / computer without having to unplug things back and forth.

**App mode

I have an iPad, but I haven't bothered buying the expensive Pioneer App cable to hook it up to the radio. There's not much point in doing so since my iPad doesn't have 3G data, so I can't listen to Pandora through it anyway. However, I do have a Samsung Galaxy S3, which I cannot connect because Pioneer was too cheap to create the software to allow it. Pioneer does have units that work with Android phones, but not this one. Either Pioneer wants to save money by not bothering with the most popular smartphone in the world (Android holds 75% of the phone market), or Apple paid them money not to. Either way, Pioneer is saving money at our expense by not supporting Android.

**GPS Module

Pioneer offers the AVIC-U250 Add-on Navigation System , which adds GPS navigation to this head unit. However, it costs $320, which is 150% of what I paid for the radio itself. Plus, given all the GUI deficiencies the radio has, I don't trust Pioneer to make a GPS that's half decent.

Just installed this in a 2002 F150 this weekend. It will fit but with some modification to the inside of the dash. Wiring harness was easy and color coded the same as the harness for the vehicle. Wire ends could have been pre stripped but no big deal. Also got the parking brake override from amazon and that was easy to install when hooking up the wiring harnesses. The aux jack is in the rear of the unit so I picked up a male to male 3.5 mm stereo wire (6ft) from walmart and ran it through the cup holder compartment. Picture quality is great, but gets a little washed out from the sun as they all do. Overall, for the price, this unit is great. Pieces not included but recomended: Vehicle specific harness-$5 on amazon. Vehicle specific face plate trim-$10 amazon. Parking brake override $15-20 amazon. 6foot aux cable $5 walmart but could probably find it on amazon. Not difficult to install but dont try it if you dont have the right tools and some basic knowledge of how things work

Morningstar ProStar 30 Charge Controller with Meter

Morningstar ProStar 30 Charge Controller with MeterWE HAVE HAD EXTREMELY GOOD LUCK USING THE MORNINGSTAR SOLAR CONTROLLERS. THEY ARE EASY TO USE AND HOLD UP IN THE HARSH CONDITIONS THAT WE USE THEM IN.

I have had two PS-30 controlers with the display in my cabin for over 4 years now and never had any problems. I can't say if these are any better than other makes but they are still performing perfectly. The termination screws are easy to use, I liked the look and price of these. I noticed that the price hasn't come down any in 4 years you can decide of that is a good or bad thing.

I have had the Morningstar ProStar 30 operating in an off grid situation for 3 years now with zero problems. What I like most about it is that it constantly scrolls through three numbers amps coming in from your panels, amps going out for your power usage, and the voltage of the battery. In addition there is a red, yellow and green LED to indicate the overall state of charge of your battery.

Since a lot of people don't know how to use solar power til they get used to it, the ProStar 30 also has a Low Voltage Disconnect. If the LED goes red, it means the battery is low. If it flashes red it means the battery is very very low and you should reduce or cut off your power usage to let it recover, and if that is unheeded the meter shows LVD and it shuts off the power connection for you. This way your batteries can't be fully discharged and damaged. Pretty much idiot proof protection.

One great feature is the ability to press the button on the front of the panel and temporarily disconnect the solar panels to show you the resting battery voltage without any power coming in. Or you can press it again to disconnect your power output to allow the fastest recharge of your batteries with zero draw on them. One more time disconnects both the panels and power output.

This unit doesn't just control your battery charge rate, it gives you enough info to learn how to MANAGE your solar power usage and batteries, and that's pretty critical for long term functionality when living off the grid.

Schumacher PSJ-4424 DSR ProSeries 4400 Peak Amps Jump Starter and Portable Power Unit

Schumacher PSJ-4424 DSR ProSeries 4400 Peak Amps Jump Starter and Portable Power Unit
  • 4400 peak amps, 500 cranking amps and 415 cold cranking amps
  • Two 22 Ah professional-grade, high output AGM batteries
  • 12 Volt DC power outlet
  • 3 amp built-in, automatic charger
  • Heavy duty clamps have replaceable copper jaws

This model is a recent purchase and I also have one 12V only model (3600) that I purchased two years ago. I own two farms and several vehicles and various farm equipment. Both units are very rugged and perform very well. I have used them both to start farm tractors, cars, trucks, mowers, a generator, and my Bobcat in winter. The cables and clamps are heavy commercial quality items that store nicely when not in use. The built-in charger works well to quickly charge and maintain the internal batteries. It will jump-start several vehicles between charges. These have really proved invaluable and save me the hassle of getting a truck close in while trying to get the battery side close enough so I can wrestle around with a cold set of jumper cables what a pain.. I carry one of these on trips, when towing or in bad weather so in an emergency I don't have to rely on the kindness of strangers for a jump-start although I have rescued two damsels in distress and one city guy with a Neon so far. You don't have to worry about smoking the alternator on your truck when jumping an unfamiliar vehicle either. The accessory 12V cigarette lighter-type outlet has actually proven to be a handy "never thought I would use it" feature. The switches are commercial quality and are not flimsy junk like many others. The LED readout actually provides useful information concerning internal battery or vehicle voltage levels or percentage of charge. If you are in the market for a no-nonsense unit, then I can tell you I have been very pleased with both of mine. You can rest assured that you will get what you pay for. Ladies, these would make a great gift for your busy guy. Just make sure it's big enough for his equipment. The 12V only is fine unless he has really big trucks, tractors or airplanes. I had to buy both of mine myself. I was able to take advantage of an Amazon gift card to help out on the second one. I was very surprised how quickly this one arrived.

Only charges to 63%. Amazon has no system for complaints, returns, resolutions because it was sold by amazon and it is battery (hazardous).

They suggest the manual, the manufacturer which I am trying, but, we have a commercial vehicle down in a field waiting for a jump.

Frustrating it is better to purchase from a reseller than from Amazon directly.

I had intended to buy a high capacity jump starter for some time for use on the farm. I was prompted to go ahead and get one a few months ago because the batteries on my Dodge Ram 3500 have reached the point that they will hold a charge for only a few days -some times the truck may set a week without being used. Since the vehicle starts fine when used regularly, I didn't want to buy a new pair of batteries till I had to.

I have been amazed at the power that this jump starter delivers. It starts my truck's relatively big Diesel engine every bit as easily as new batteries would.

Only one minor complaint: The cables on the jump starter lack a couple of feet being long enough to reach from the ground to the battery on my truck. This is a minor problem -I simply set it on the bumper.

As I said, I have owned this jump starter only a few months. If future problems occur, I will amend this rating.

BlueAnt S4 True Handsfree Speakerphone & Wireless Bluetooth 2.1

BlueAnt S4 True Handsfree Speakerphone & Wireless Bluetooth 2.1I just bought a second Blue Ant for my work van I've had one in my car for about 8 months and don't know what I did without it! The sound isn't the best for listening to my music, but that's what stereos and iPhone adapters are for.

I wouod recommend this to anyone, especially for the safety aspect. If you are in an accident and can't reach your phone, all you'd need to do is say "Blue Ant speak to me" and tell your phone to call someone. It's the best product for people who are conscious about not holding a cell phone while they drive.

Works well and would recommend it to friends or others. As this was my first experiance with this type of hands free device, except for the ones that you put in your ear,I would say it met my expectations. I have read other people's reviews on this same item so I did have some expectations. My only real complaint would be that it I have to ask the device to connect to my phone's voice commands every time I want to call someone or just to dial a number. My expectations were higher on that operation. I was thoroughly expecting to say call such and such and it would connect, not so. Besides that one item I am pleased with all other aspects. When I do purchase down the road I will look for one, if available, that will do the phone command right from the get go as a in ear piece does.

Schumacher PI-200 Instant Power DC to AC Power Inverter - 200 Watts

Schumacher PI-200 Instant Power DC to AC Power Inverter - 200 Watts
  • 200-watt power inverter with 400-watt peak surge power
  • Has LED indicator and convenient on/off switch
  • Includes 12-volt cigarette lighter and accessory plug
  • Features a high-speed cooling fan and overload protection with a low battery alarm
  • 115-volt AC power for running computers, cell phones, lights, power tools, television, radios, and CD players

I use a power inverter to charge my cell phone, my air mattress pump, my cameras, and my laptop while on the road. The first inverter I bought lasted all of maybe two days, so to replace it I resolved to do more thorough research. When I checked out Schumacher's site, I discovered they had a vast line of power supply equipment, much of it for industrial use. My assumption was their small consumer inverters would be built to industrial standards as well and might last longer than my first one. I was not disappointed.

The PI-200 has been my constant traveling companion over thousands of miles of roads and has never failed me, plus it has about as many features as you could ask for. 200 watts is more than enough for charging the items that travel with me. It also features a low battery alarm should it drain the source battery below a certain level. But don't think that means you can continue to pull power through your car's cigarette lighter after the car is shut down for the simple reason that turning off your ignition also turns off the power to your cigarette lighter.

The workaround for this would be to find an adaptor going from a female cigarette lighter to two clips. Then attach the clips to the battery and plug into the other end of the adaptor. Then keep your inverter handy and shut it off if and when the low battery alarm goes off.

Built like a tank.

I keep this in the car. Haven't used it more than a couple of times, but

is handy to have when I need it! I could use more watts, but fine for laptop, phone, etc. More versitle than the individual car chargers, and less money in the long run!

Want Schumacher PI-200 Instant Power DC to AC Power Inverter - 200 Watts Discount?

you need to make sure the things you need to power are less than 200 watts. I bought it for a camping trip to power an air mattress pump but the wattage exceeded 200w. It worked fine for other things, eg phone charger, camera charger. Just check the adapter for the amps and do the math (wattage = ___ amp * 120 volts) to make sure it works for the device.

I purchased this device because I wanted an FM transmitter that would simultaneously recharge my Sansa Clip Plus. That's the main feature of this device. I was also swayed by the customer reviews praising the Gomadic Company and its customer service. I can verify that Gomadic's customer service is outstanding: Every complaint I had was graciously answered within one business day, and a new device was mailed to me immediately at no charge, no questions asked. But no company can make a business around great customer service alone. The product also needs to work more or less as advertised. And this one does not.

The first device I received would transmit as long as I didn't plug in the second cable to allow simultaneous charging. As soon as I attempted to charge, the audio no longer appeared in the FM signal. In other words, it basically never worked as advertised. Gomadic's CSR emailed me that it's a "recently discovered" "bug with the device", but they have "resolved the issue" and are sending me a new device. Well, the new device actually worked ... for about three weeks. Then, unfortunately, it started transmitting all kinds of nasty noises, regardless of whether the Sansa Clip was plugged into it, or turned on, or charging. Therefore, this device became unusable as an FM transmitter. The Gomadic CSR apologized and sent me a third device. This one performed exactly like the first one. That is, it never allowed transmitting and charging at the same time.

Ordinarily, I'd apply the three-strikes-and-you're-out rule. But because of the responsive customer service, and because I really wanted this device to work, I decided to give Gomadic one last chance. My last email to them reviewed my experience, and stated that I planned to write an Amazon customer review based on whether they could make good on their product's main claim to transmit and charge at the same time. The CSR apologized again, stating, "We have sent a new one today which we are certain will resolve these issues."

It was not to be. The fourth device performed exactly like the first and third. So now I have four devices, none of which work as advertised. All but the second never worked as advertised. The second only worked for three weeks. The three dead-on-arrival units are manufactured with a 5/32" round cable, while the one which worked briefly has a flat twin zip-cord style cable. I suspect that the units with flat cable also contain an internal bug fix allowing the unit to work correctly initially ... until something else goes wrong. Units with round cable will probably never work as advertised.

It is unacceptable to me that the main feature does not work as advertised, so I gave it one star. Apparently others feel differently. Two previous customer reviews note that this feature does not work, but they gave it three and even four stars anyway.

I purchased this product as the CD player in my car died. I shopped around, read reviews for lots of different items but settled on this one because it was specific for the Sansa Clip. I plugged it in, set the radio and this unit to 87.9, and it worked GREAT! No static, background noise, or other interference. It was worth every cent.

I have purchased several Gomadic products using their "Adaptable Charging Technology" which consists of a changeable tip that plugs into your cell phone. If you get a new phone that requires a different plug (which I do every year or two) you can simply buy a new tip for the Gomadic devices and they work with the new phone.

I have ordered several Gomadic items and recently had a problem with one after a few months. I emailed them and today (next business day) received a reply that a new unit was in the mail!

I make my living providing service to my customers. Gomadic does that as well as any company I have ever dealt with. They make great and unique products and stand behind them.

This is my first Amazon review after years of buying products. I felt strongly enough about this supplier to finally post a review.

For the price this is a good device for any mp3 player. My only complaint is that on my Sansa Clip version I can not charge and play at the same time. Works great if all I do is try to play it which is what I really bought it for so I'm keeping it. To charge when I get somewhere I just plug in the usb and by the time I get back to the truck it's fully charged.

I purchased the Gomadic transmitter/charger for my new Sansa clip. I only listen to my mp3 player in the car, so I needed something that would transmit the music. My previous Sansa had a transmitter/charger was made directly by Sansa and was able to charge and transmit at the same time. However, the Gomadic transmitter/charger can only do one or the other at a time. If I want to play music, I cannot have the charger part plugged in. I am a little disappointed with the product since my last one was able to both simultaneously. Regardless, the Gomadic still allows me to listen to mp3 player in the car. I just hope the battery on the Sansa lasts a while.

Goal Zero 14002 Guardian Silver 12V Charge Controller

Goal Zero 14002 Guardian Silver 12V Charge ControllerIf you have any of the Goal Zero Solar Panels you will need this controller to charge any 12 Volt batteries that are NOT built by Goal Zero. The 12 Volt Battery list includes: Home/Business Security backup batteries; Basement Watchdog (sump pump) batteries; AGM Batteries; Flooded batteries, etc.

Note that the maximum input wattage (from the banked Solar Panels) to this charger is 150 Watts, which means that, for example, the controller can handle five (5) Goal Zero 22003 Escape 30M Solar Panel Briefcase at one time. My review on the Panel Briefcase (and other Goal Zero products) is found elsewhere on these Amazon pages.

This unit is compact enough and self contained to include in your Go Bag, too.

This completely new design works great (from late 2013-early 2013), does what I was looking for, in a nice compact, light unit that is reasonable in cost. They even have two input ports so both sizes of connectors from their solar panels work without having to have another adapter. The unit input and output wire connections are very tight and would seem to protect against moisture at the fittings. I use two of the Goal Zero briefcase solar 30w panels to keep my rugged outdoor support TrueNorth trailer's two 12v batts topped up, while camping in remote areas off the grid and away from regular campgrounds. The 4 stars is only due to the fact that I have not tested it over a long camping trip yet. If all works out, I will come back and upgrade to 5 stars.

Sunsei SE-1200 Solar 18-Watt 12-Volt Charger

Sunsei SE-1200 Solar 18-Watt 12-Volt ChargerWell made and does the job just fine. It will work on almost any 12v battery. Naturally it does not replace what an electric battery charger can do and in the same amount of time, but as a trickle charger for car and boat batteries this is all you need (other than some sunshine). The only negative is that these Sunsei solar panels are far more expensive than they need to be. They are made in China and a 18w panel of this quality should be 30-50% less than what the Sunsei brand demands. Coleman is pretty much the same product, all coming from ICP Solar in Canada, however the Coleman panels cost much less.

This panel seems to be well designed and works well. The connectors are very functional and allow you to easily interconnect a number of panels. I particularly like the indicator light on the panel that lets you know that it's working. However, the solar cell is covered by glass that is very delicate. I once picked up one of these panels by the corner of the frame and this generated enough stress to crack the glass. I don't know how long the panel will last now that it's cracked.

First all all I didn't get the from Amazon.com, I pick this Solar Charger from another website in which I caught it on Sale for around $80.00. I had it my room for about 2 years and never used it, saved it for one of those raining days. Well two years later. I just had one of those rain days. I did a night on the town, and forgot my backlights were left on when I was pulling out backwards from my girl house. Got back to my place and woke up the next day finding note on my door saying I left my light on in my jeep. My backup light don't work in reverse it on a toggle switch. So I went out to my jeep and the battery read at 9.6V to low for starting my jeep. So I said wait a min, I have the Solar Charge 1200 I use that for charging the battery. So I open the box, and read the instructions. I had to cut have make some minor change for charging up my battery which was not big. Once that was done, I tested it all out with a meter and took it out to my jeep. I started at 1400 at 9.6V and by 1830 it was at 12.0V, I could have started the jeep then but would have been pushing it. So I left it on until the next day. I went back out around 1300 and meter the battery again. This time is said it was 12.3V. Now this put me in the ball park. I uplug the Solar Charger 1200 and my jeep started on the first try. Just to note my came with a Solar Controller with cables and of course the Solar pannel. I am not sure if the one on Amazon.com does. However I would have easy paid the going Amazon.com price if it came to that. My Solar Charger was well built, there is glass so be carefull with it, but seem strudy to me. I had zero issuse with Solar Pannel, however I did have a problem with the Solar Controller, it came apart on me, when I hook up the wires. I fixed it, wiht a little supper glue around the edges. It charge for me 1 Gel Cell 12V Battery. I would say in total time with sun light, was 12 hours, and that went from 9.6v to 12.3v. It was easy, I say fast, and the cost of charging my battery was free excluding the Solar Charger. I would highly recomend it.

  • High-End Supreme Sound With Advanced Noise Cancellation Technology
  • Auto Receiving Cellphone Calls & Intercom Calls

Overall I am very pleased with my purchase! This a good device that is well worth the money and I would definitely recommend to friends. Below is a summary of my thoughts.

PROS

* 1/2 the price compared to other systems

* Rider-to-Rider intercom worked flawlessly

* Easy installation and setup

* Remote control worked great and is much safer to use!

* Good battery life (used extensively for 7+ hours in one day with power to spare)

* Range adequate but could be a little better (@ 1/2 mile unobstructed range)

* Can connect up to 4 riders.

* Full duplex communication allowing both riders to simultaneous talk at same time like phone call.

CONS

* Helmet clip doesn't feel very secure (issue solved by adding double sided tape or Velcro)

* Unit needs to be tethered or secured to clip with zip ties since it can work itself loose and detach.

* Speakers lack bass and sound tinny at high volume, useless at speeds above 65 mph,

* Bluetooth connection occasionally dropped (only affects phone/music function not rider-to-rider communication)

* USB charging cable has proprietary charging tip (no micro USB power port)

The "Zak" man

I have recently been contacted by Shark Motorcycle Audio and after obtaining some information from me, they informed me that they are sending a replacement handlebar control. This makes me very happy, as I was happy with the performance of the unit in a whole, but I bought it for the remote control which didn't work. I am awaiting the replacement, at which time I will update here again.

Thanks Shark!!!

I installed this and it works. However. The handlebar controller does not work at all. The adhesive that mounts the device to the helmet came off doing 50MPH on the highway and I almost lost the device. I ended up mounting it with stronger tape. If this wasn't such an involved process to install I would have returned it for an exchange. If these issues did not happen I would have been very happy with it. I use it every day and works great (except for the handlebar mount, that is sitting at home as it does NOT work at all).

It's important to remember that this set is cheaper than any of the others. Or at least it was when I bought it last year. Because of that, I think it works really well. The wires can get a little in the way, but for me and my friend on our scooters we can talk easily and answer phone calls with no problem.

CTA Digital Rapid Travel Charger for iPod (White)

I took a chance and bought this even though I saw the bad reviews. I thought to myself "it's only a dollar, if it dies in a month or two like the reviews say, I will just get something else because this does have some good reviews...." This completely ruined my Ipod Classic 80 gig. My Ipod was 1 month old, I had to return it and get a refurbished one because of this!!

It shipped to me real quick so I was happy, then i took it out of the packaging and right away charged my Ipod to a full battery relatively quickly, still happy. Then I went to listen to my Ipod.... Every single song was complete static! I restored it to factory settings and reloaded with the same problem. I took it back to apple who restored it again and put their music on it and they got the same results!

I have never written a review before, but I felt the need to warn anybody who is on the fence about buying this.

I bought it to be used with my ipod touch. I was really excited that I wouldn't have to buy the expensive apple charger, but when I hooked it up I was disappointed. I noticed that if I tried to use the ipod while charging the screen started to flicker. also on places where you have to drag your finger ie. unlock from sleep mode, it seems to be not working properly and it gives it an effect that its sticky like glue, makes it feel like you are dragging it by force. So i didnt take any risk using it anymore and ended up buying the expensive apple's version, so this is a complete waste of money for me.

Unless I'm downloading new music to my iPod video, I prefer to recharge it using this. It's fast and dependable and it's $28 cheaper than an Apple charger, with both doing exactly the same thing. Also there's an effective lock on the plug insert that keeps in firmly in place as it's charging your unit. Recommended as an excellent value.

This is a very slim inverter with 2 USB ports and 200 watts continuous power. I love this little guy. It has a fan that only runs when the unit gets warm. I've used it with my laptop and USB ports charging and the fan only occasionally runs.

The USB ports are on all the time, which is great. Only thing I could say is a complaint is that I was charging 2 devices and the USB side became very hot over time. Next time I used it, I switched on the inverter (was not using A/C output) to allow the cooling fan to run and it solved the heat condition. I tested the load of the inverter and the usb ports. It draws practically nothing unloaded and seems to be efficient loaded. I did not test the load rating of this inverter.

It has a 2 port plug and a plastic sheild that flips out if you want to use a three pronged plug.

This is a great little product for charging laptops and phones. I don't have any iproducts, so I can not say if it works with them or not. It charged my power hungry Thunderbolt with no issues via USB.

For this price, get one.
