Sirius satellite should be considered a great complement to your audio system, whether in home or car. It should not be considered an end all to music selection. It will not replace CDs, mp3s or typical over the air radio. Once this expectation is established, it's good to see Sirius as a decent addition to those who love music.

First off, how much does it cost? You'll need a receiver, then a docking system for the home or office. Then there is a setup fee. So you're looking at a little under $200 to get started. Quite a huge investment for just checking out a new type of radio. I would advise getting Sirius professional installed in your car, unless you don't mind wire flaying around when you drive while looking at a tacking do it yourself setup. Also, if you want both home and office, you'll have to buy a boombox. This can run to about $350 total. Quite pricey, especially when it doesn't include any monthly fees.

Secondly, how about the reception? It's surprisingly well in my car, but does suffer some dark spots when you go under a tunnel or when travelling through a tree line street. However, I was unable to get any signal in neither my home nor my office, so don't automatically assume that it will work at your home. The only consolation is that if you sign up for Sirius, you get monthly web access.

Thirdly, how about the playlist? The best way to describe Sirius's playlist is probably a lot breadth, but not quite a lot of depth. For music, unless you love every type of music available, you'll actually only have about 10 music stations to listen to. For example, all Classical, Latin, Electronic, Jazz, Children and Love stations are absolutely useless to me as this not my type of music. In terms of sports, it's got the NFL, NBA, and if ever, NHL. The best game for radio, baseball, is with XM satellite, which is a huge bummer. Many of the news stations and entertainment stations are just audio replays of audio stations, so it's got commercials and aren't altogether suited for radio. For example, you'll hear, "take a look at this replay". Well, I can't look, it's radio. All in all, the talk and music is the equivalent of doubling the FM and AM radio stations of a big city. You'll still listen to your normal stations, but the number of stations will be expanded.

Fourthly, how about the receiver itself? It's pretty good. The display is huge. You get to see the band or song name before switching to a different station. I love that. It can store 20 songs, which, when one of the songs comes up, the receiver will beep and give you the option of changing to that station. The only small problems were that sometimes the stored songs didn't come up, and the turn wheel will lacks a grip, which is annoying when driving.

Fifthly, what were some of the major problems of Satellite radio? Besides the high cost for the equipment, the fact that they charge an activation fee was annoying. I'm willing to pay a monthly fee, do I need to add another fee to that? Secondly, the nickel and diming continues with the fact that the receiver contains no basic antenna nor power supply. You must buy a docking kit no matter what. I bought a car docking kit, but it only had a power supply for the cigarette lighter, which meant that all setup has to be done outdoors, in the car, with the car running. I couldn't even test it to see if it would work indoors, so I had to buy a boombox to test, only to find out it didn't work, and then return the boombox. A cheap home AC/DC power supply included in the docking kit would have saved me hours without costing me fifty dollars for the other docking system. Also, the customer service is not that great. The people on phone are nice, but you have to endure the navigation system along with a large self-serving tirade about how well Sirius radio is before you can get to the menu. In order to get stream player access, you have to e-mail them for the password, but no one bothered to reply to my e-mail, so I had to call them again. When the company won't give you the password for the free web access, and won't reply when you follow the website instructions, it gets annoying. Another thing is the repetitiveness and limiting factors of the playlist. Some of the bands I'm interested in, Carbon Leaf, the Streets, Perfect Circle, Tool groups that I thought should appear for paid radio, are not really there. However, Ashlee Simpson, Maroon 5 and Leonard Skynard are pretty much on 24/7. Not quite the original playlists I was hoping to get.

Finally, what were some of the things that surprised me? First off, it's still cool. To be free of Clear Channel's chokehold on music radio is great. The web access is free. XM charges you about four dollars a month, making it more expensive monthly if you use web access. If you get Dish Network, the music stations are there already to listen through over your television. If you don't get Dish Network, you can get a free preview via the web for three days. Nice. Finally, I've become acquainted with many bands that I would not have known or just barely remember. It's nice to hear Traffic, Public Enemy, Guns and Roses, Flogging Molly, N.W.A., etc.

So, all in all, it's a nice complement, but it's no magic musical panacea.

The first thing I'd like to give here is a warning NPR lovers beware. The NPR stream available here is probably not what you expect. Check out NPR /Sirius websites to see what it offers before buying. NPR was my biggest reason for buying Sirius over xm.

Overall though, I am thrilled, the BBC stream is tremendous, the music channels are varied and play a great collection of music inside their genres. The sports channels let me hear NHL and NBA games now and will let me hear every NFL game.

The product is good, not perfect, but well conceived. Setup was simple and 10 minutes after purchase I was up and running, the auto adaptor broadcasts on the four 88.x fm channels.

In short I recommend the product, but educate yourself carefully to make sure you know what you're getting.

Let me start by saying that I've listened to both XM and Sirius, and Sirius' programming is far superior. The streamhosts, though they do talk a little bit, bring a ton of knowledge and programming savvy to the streams. And the variety is very good. And I really like that subscribers can listen to the music channels online for free.

As for the Audiovox receiver: I bought the receiver, the car kit and the home kit. I'm giving it 4 stars because it's pretty good and easy to operate. I like the "memo" feature that allows you to find your favorite songs no matter what stream they're on. And the remote control is nice for home use.

But it does have some annoying issues that should give most people pause.

As mentioned by several others here, the tuner runs very hot during continuous use. Don't make the mistake of leaving the radio on without the car running. Mine got so hot sitting in my parked car (it was about 80 degrees that day) that the screen blacked out and it wouldn't work until I shut it down and let it cool off.

I also moved the receiver and antenna from one car to another one, and in the process broke the antenna connector plug. It's really poorly made. The jack is difficult to plug and unplug, and there's a weak point that breaks easily. You have to really tug on it to unplug it. I tried soldering the plug back together, but that didn't work. I'm going to have to spend $50 to get a replacement antenna. Solution: If you have two cars, buy two car kits.

And now that Sirius is on Dish Network, it defeats the purpose of having a receiver in my living room.

In hindsight, I should have bought a car-only receiver that hooked into my stereo.

The receiver has two issues that have to be considered. First this guy gets really hot. Both in the car and in the home. Heat was the cause of a failure of this item in my house (the fm modulator died) Audiovox did send me a free replacement, but I was out of use for a few weeks. The other issue is signal strength. The FM modulator could use a boost. When traveling, I have to change the frequency to get a solid signal. Otherwise I get interference from other stations in the 88.1 to 88.7 range. Is there something better? I tried the JVC and it's cooler, but the signal strength of the FM modulator is no better.

First XM or Sirrius I chose sirius only for the programming I was leaning towards XM but the entire NFL plus WABC out of New York and 790 the Zone out of Atlanta made me choose sirius.

I bought it mainly for the news talk -comedy channels but the Music Stations are great My daughter and I can finally agree on some of the music channels which is a nice change. The traffic / weather reports are much more detailed than on the standard Atlanta radio.

The sound is great in the car. It made my 98 Neon (please don't laugh) a great little car again that is fun to drive. The hour drive to work is enjoyable and more relaxing. I also bought the boombox and move the unit from the car to the boombox easily.

I rarely lose signal and then it's when I'm parked under an overhang like a gas station filling up. Every once in a while the signal may or may not drop while driving under very heavy trees and then just a split second. On the drive to work I expected to lose signal in the parking deck, but there must be a terrestial antennea nearby and no signal loss. I do not even need the antennae on the boombox at work.

The car adapter that came with this knocks a point off. It is an FM modulator. Meaning I tune the radio to 88.1 (or .3 .5 .7) depending on which frequncy I use on the adpater. Atlanta has an 88.1 and a 88.5 radio station so I set the PNP2 set to 88.3. 99.5% it works great. But 88.5 must boost the power output and bleeds into the 88.3 band which causes very minor static sometimes. Since Satellite radio is so much better than FM I removed the car antennae completely I don't listen to anything else but the Sirius Radio.

I held off buying this product hoping someone else would finally write a review on it. After getting a tire blow out the night before and having trouble removing some of the lug nuts, I felt I could no longer wait and ordered this item the next morning. As soon as you take it in your hands you have that feeling that this is nothing more than a toy and it will not do the job. Much to my surprise it did take off 3 of my 5 lug nuts on one wheel and then it just quit working. This is a cheap,poorly made tool that you cannot rely on. You would be much better off purchasing a good four way chrome tire lug wrench and adding on a three foot pipe extention to it for more leverage. Thanks to AMAZON'S wonderful return policy I was able to send it right back for a full refund.

I was so excited. I tried each one with my Samsung Intensity II and they all worked. I am just ashamed I doubted these at first before owning them. PLUS these are better made than what I got from the Verizon store! Will purchase again for sure! I will also recommend this set to anyone that has the same phone as myself.

I purchased this charger pack to supplement my new phone from Verizon Wireless. I have tried both the car and wall charger already and both worked fine to charge my phone. The connection to the phone is very good once connected but I advise to be gentle so as not to break it. Has nothing to do with this product in particular, it is just that the connection and connection port on the phone appear like they can be easily broken if the connection is forced. This has NOT happened to me, just looks like it. Anyway this is a nice charger set with both normal home and car connections which is very convenient, especially since the phone only comes with a home charger. Having an extra "home" charger I can keep at teh office ensures that I can charge at home, at work or in the car (essentially anytime). This product works and is very inexpensive, a great alternative to the official charger that you woudl get from the Verizon which I am sure would be multiples of the price. I have not had it for long so I cannot comment on the longevity of the item, but I recommend considering the much more expensive brand name alternatives. The one thing I was disappointed with was it took over two weeks to ge the item, which I thought was long. Amazons's website gives an estaimted delivery time and the item was deleivered at least a full week later than that. I was lucky I did not need it in a hurry. If you do, order early!! (5 star for product very low rating for delivery time although item received new sealed and in good working order just took too long to receive for an overall rating of 4 stars)

I own a business where we source vehicle parts for various shops obsolete parts, discontinued parts, and when we're unable to locate NOS parts used parts. I purchased this impact to replace another cordless impact that died, for mobile-use in areas where power is not available and extension cords are impractical (e.g. body shops, salvage yards, etc.).

While I've found this impact wrench to be more than capable, it has two major short-comings for those considering a battery operated impact for shop/professional use.

First, the anvil incorporates a detent pin, for retaining the socket. This makes the placing/changing a socket on the impact difficult, for most sockets. While those sockets with considerable wear usually go-on without much fight, most sockets either have to be forced onto the anvil, or the detent pin has to be manually depressed to get the socket to slip over the pin. Removing the socket can be even more problematic, if the detent pin is accidently placed into the retainer-hole that is drilled into most impact sockets. You must use a small diameter phillips or torx screwdriver to manually depress the detent pin, before it will release the socket.

Second, the "trigger" switch is non-standard and functionally poor in design. Unlike most impacts, the switch is a pivoting type of rocker-switch that is approximately 2" in length. This requires you to either reposition your hand to change from removing a bolt/nut to tightening a bolt/nut or to use your index finger for removal and ring-finger to tighten. Several people "inadvertently" used the impact in the wrong direction before getting use to the rocker-switch, and in one case significant shop-time was wasted extracting a bolt that was sheared as a result.

To the positive, this impact is very strong when it comes to bolt/nut removal. I've had it remove 32mm axle-nuts, where a 25" breaker bar could not "break" the axle-nut loose after repeated tries and this was not on a fresh battery. I routinely use it to remove pinch-bolts (spindles), subframe bolts (front wheel drive transmissions), and U-bolts (rear axle assemblies), without any significant problem.

Overall, I rate this cordless impact as follows:

Ability (5) outperforms other battery-operated impacts in the same price and torque range

Design (3) detent pin significantly increases time required to change sockets; the rocker-switch can be difficult for some to adapt to especially when you routinely change between an air-impact and cordless-impact.

Price (5) performs nearly as well as higher-priced cordless impacts, such as Milwaukee and Snap-On

Useability (3) again due to the added time required to change impact sockets (detent pin) and non-standard trigger-switch, it detracts from use in situations where the socket must be frequently changed.

If DeWalt were to produce this same cordless impact with a hog-ring type retaining anvil, as well as a single-pull switch and separate directional switch like the DC823B I could see this becoming the defacto standard in mid-range cordless impact wrenches.

Overall, I rate the DeWalt DW059B/K Impact Wrench a (4).

Great price without the battery. Very powerful. Able to easily remove lug nuts without effort or the need for a breaker bar.

Get it if you need something small (relatively) that can remove multiple sets of wheels without breaking a sweat.

Only gripe...the trigger. It isn't like a regular dewalt drill where there is the button you push back and forth to change the direction the drill goes when you pull the trigger, the trigger has an upper and lower portion...a little harder to use but fine none the less.

Good tool and price but one problem, the socket retaining device broke the very first time I used it.

The impact socket wouldn't come off for anything the first time, I ended up putting the socket in a vice and pounding the socket off with a punch and hand sledge though the center of the socket. Retainer parts flew when it finally busted loose. Don't think there was anything I could have done differently. I'm sure I could send the unit back but it seems to hold the sockets on just fine without the retainer. Besides I don't see how a replacement wrench would be any different.

As far as strength goes, it was able to break a 8" long 3/8" lag bolt in half. I've been grabbing it every time since I got instead of my 1/2" IR pneumatic impact. It's been able to break loose tractor tire lug nuts that were torqued to 250 ft/lbs.

Hard to beat that.

First of all, I never had air before. So I bought this instead of buying compressor and the hole nine yards.

I already had a 18v dewalt drill with a nicad battery. The battery is about 1 year old with not much use. At first when receiving this impact drill, I felt weak power so right away I made sure by fully charging the battery I had and trying it out. It worked well, but with automotive you know there are some stubborn bolt/nuts because of normal oxidation and things. So I would use heat/breaker bar then this which worked fine.

So just a month ago I bought the new dewalt lithium-ion battery with charger. Charged the battery and it sat for like 2 weeks. Finally had some work to do on a car where my elcheapo air tools frustrated me. Pulled out the impact drill and plugged in the new battery.

This beast blasted nuts off that I even had a hard time with a 18 inch breaker bar(more to do with position clearance; I have some guns on my arm).

So I came to the part where I put the new parts in. Normally I would torque to specs but I would at least use the drill to get close where i don't need to ratchet. I accidentally broke a bolt with this drill. It works so fast that I wasn't able to release and sure enough it snapped off the bolt with nut. Luckily it was an easy fix but I just wanted to warn people not to underestimate the ft pounds mentioned on this tool.

I purchased this to remove lug nuts from my cars and trucks. I went with the bare tool as I already had 18v Dewalt tools that worked great. Opened it up, inserted a freshly charged battery and tried to take the lug nuts off my Ford Super Duty (14mm) with no luck. Doesn't even seem to be trying. I typically torque them to around 125 lb. ft. I haven't had the opportunity to try it on other, smaller nuts yet, but I'm not too hopeful. Still trying to decide whether to keep it or send it back. Very disapointed.

have had this for a little over 2 weeks and it works good. it even gives a slow charge to batteries under normal indoor light. I tried it outside and it charges batteries fast and with no batteries in full sun it charges my cell phone well through the usb port. indoor light is not enough to run the USB with enough juice to charge a phone, but it does charge batteries indoors and can use the batteries to charge a USB device.

Under solar power only it is not enough to run some of my higher demand devices but it does most fine, and when running of 2 AAs it runs the USB hot enough to charge most anything I have.

All in all it seems a good unit and I paid less than $20 for it with shipping I recommend it to all my friends,

The only design flaw is that the little loop at the top is not quite big enough to fit a carbeener through so I had to attach a keyring to it in order to clip it to the outside of my pack. perhaps in the future they can mold it with a slightly larger opening.

This charger is great! It completely charged my ipod in less that 3 hours! However, the connections that come with it don't fit well with some phones. It works fine with USB cords that you already have for your appliances/phones, though.

I purchased the hybrid solar charger hoping to use it on a camping trip, but in testing prior to the trip I discovered it's not even worth taking. Prior to purchase I knew of some product flaws like there being no off switch and needing to remove the batteries when not charging, but the flaws are worse than I imagined.

Initially I tried to leave the charger in my sun room which receives a good amount of sunlight, but the charging light didn't even come on during the course of a few hours. It needs really strong sunlight to "turn it on." After which I could bring it back inside to the sun room and it would continue charging with the light on. I tried this over the course a few weekends and only once did the batteries actually charge. Every other time one of the batteries completely discharged. At first I thought I had a bad battery so I tried multiple batteries with no luck. The batteries were Energizer NiMH and they have performed well in my Xbox 360 controller.

I knew the charging speed would strongly depend on the brightness of the sunlight, but I didn't expect that more often than not charging in the sun would drain the batteries rather than charging them.

The reason I chose this model of solar charger was it's support for AA batteries because I figured I could always bring extras and use them to charge my camera at night. This didn't work out so well either. Numerous times I tried charging my cell phone as a test case and not only did my cell phone not charge, but it seemed to lose charge at a faster rate than it would have if the charger wasn't plugged into it.

I'm not sure if I've waited too long to return this thing, but hopefully I can at least discourage others from buying it.

Don't buy this product. It really isn't worth the money. the couple times I tried to charge my cell phone with it, it never worked.

This is a decent product, but I do think it would be nice to have an 'off' switch. There is only charging the internal batteries or charging a device off of them. It would be great to be able to switch it off without having to take the batteries out all the time.

I dunno. I bought this because it was inexpensive but then I had to go and buy $35 rechargeable batteries for it, anyway. I'd probably go with something a little more solid next time.

Arrived bubble wrapped in a small priority shipping box; not a retail package. This is a 1 piece unit, no accessories and a single half sheet of instructions. No loose parts to worry about, the plug is permanently attached and plugs directly into cig adapter. I like the compact size and feel of this unit. The cord is about the right length for me, there is 22" of wire between the plug and the unit. It'll reach the passenger seat just fine from the console. Mine works and produces modified AC power which runs my gadgets nicely (chargers: both USB and AC wall warts). The included USB ports are a bonus. My biggest disappointment is that the fan remains on continuously. This means I'll only be able to use it in situations where the car is running. I had hoped the fan would only turn on when it needed to cool down.

Due to the inefficiencies of a continuous fan, this unit is not a reasonable choice in an off grid battery situation. It is fine in a running car. I bought this unit hoping I could use it in a camping kit but it would quickly drain my solar charged portable battery system (only 9Ah). I'm going to keep it, but it's less useful than I had hoped. I won't be unable to leave this unit turned on when I'm away from the car or it'll drain the car battery, which is unacceptable.

The sales info says "Temperature controlled cooling fan" which tells me the fan should not be on unless it needs to cool the unit. I've contacted the seller to see how we'll resolve this. Perhaps I have a bad unit? *** Update from seller, this unit is working as designed ***

3 stars for delivering the power and having a USB port, but not more due to the noise and waste of energy a full time cooling fan causes. If the fan only went on as needed this would be a nice 5 star Inverter.

Contacted seller, after a couple of email exchanges it was determined that this unit will keep the fan on at all times. While the unit differs from how I understood the listing, it's not worth my time to send it back. When I ordered mine, 1/3rd of the price was paid in shipping fees, so I'll keep this unit as an in-car unit and look to find something else that will be more efficient in a solar/battery based system.

If your intended use is in a car, the fan is most likely not a problem. You can also check to see if your Cig adapter shuts off when you turn off your keys, then it's even less of an issue as it won't drain your batteries when you leave your car. I have a Cig adapter in the trunk I use to power/charge things on trips and when traveling, mine turns off with the key so I can use this in the car without worry.

Mine continues to work well and has survived weeks in my trunk in the hot AZ sun.

Overall I can recommend as long as you understand what you are getting. A nice little inverter for the money. The things that might surprise you is the little cooling fan never turns off. Not a super big deal but it does draw a little under half an amp just to run the units cooling fan. Having two USB ports was why I bought it. Watch the video and you will see more about power draw.

First thing I liked was the price, this being $70 cheaper on Amazon.com than it was at local stores, if you can find a local store that carries it. I found it for about $199 at Tractor Supply Co., same exact thing. I read the reviews first so wasn't upset that the carrying case did not include storage space for tubes of grease, but it would've been nice if you did get what was pictured, especially for the price.

Even though it's 12V, it has more than enough power to squeeze out the grease, even if you had the gun sitting in a cold garage mid-winter. I found that filling my truck's joints with green grease was exceedingly easier than the last time I had done so with a hand trigger style gun.

When you pick this up and have it in your hand, you know it means business. It doesn't feel "plastic-ey", like it's going to break at any moment. With it resting on my chest, I had ample hose available to reach whatever I needed to reach under my 4x4 truck, which I was thankful for ,given its weight.

No problems whatsoever priming it. They gave all sorts of instructions as to how to prime it if necessary, but I just put the tube in, pushed in the handle in the bottom, and pulled the trigger and a few seconds later grease was kicking out and has kicked out every trigger pull since then.

You can hear the pump cycling through, so there is an audible noise every time it kicks in some grease. This is good since it will enable you to gauge how much grease is going in if you can't see the fitting and are just adding some by feel. Each pump noise equals one full squeeze of a standard grease gun, in my estimation. Each pump is less than a second, so it doesn't take very long either.

Bottom line is, this is an impressive tool. It does what it's supposed to, and it does it well.

First off, ill disclose that i purchased the 1100 amp model (largest, but not on amazon), but one of my issues relates to the whole line. Everything seemed to work well, even sporting an 80% charge from the store (although the % meter only ever showed 100%), could not jump a sedan which still had 10v left on the battery.

Main issue with this product line is the substandard clamp jaws. Only 1/2 of the jaw is electrically connected, the other side is insulated by the plastic of the handle. You don't get enough of an electrical connection to give your starter enough juice. Reviews on Sears' website are around 60% product returns, ranging from not charging/holding charge, to not able to jump a lawn mower. These reviews also explained why at my local sears 4 out of 5 boxes on the shelf looked open/returned.

There ARE some good reviews, so i'm hesitant to say straight out 'don't buy this', but i would be wary and fully test your unit before relying on it.

Went to pepboys and bought a Solar Booster Pac (900 peak amps), with only half charge turned my car on first crank....for less $$....just saying....

Pros: It's small and portable. It can take batteries (AA).

Cons: It has poor broadcasting capabilities, it doesn't work well with phones (which is what I got it for), to even get it to work you have to hold it.

This is a type B USB cable instead of a type A USB cable. If you connect a type B cable, the Nuvi starts up in USB mode. Supposedly, you can hold the bottom left corner of the screen for 15 seconds while powering up to bypass USB mode but I found an easier way.

Power up without the cable.

Hold down the battery icon for about 5 seconds to enter Diagnostic mode.

Connect the cable.

Exit Diagnostic mode.

Your Nuvi should be in GPS mode now.

Do NOT recommend. Charger would only charge half the time and broke after about 10 times using it. It's better to buy the real thing instead of this replacement.

I have been using this adapter for about three weeks and it is still fully functional. It fits with my splitter and charges my Garmin unit perfectly. The charger is clearly cheaply constructed, hence the sub-$5 price tag. I'm not sure how one can shell out a whopping $3 for a replacement like this, then come up shocked when it isn't perfect. Anyway, mine works fine, but in time I expect the actual outer "shell" of the charger to fall apart, it just seems poorly constructed. For what it's worth, the Garmin-brand charger that came with my GPS unit showed signs of wear fairly quickly as well.

This is definately not a pretty radar detector. In the days of Apple design, and GPS's looking great and slim, LCD televisions, and kitchen appliances looking and functioning great; there's not a lot of excuse for poor industrial design. More on the construction in a moment.

February 21, 2013 Update: The replacement unit has worked flawlessly for more than three years now. The new screen saver blacks out the screen leaving a flashing dot, so there is less chance for burn in. I still use this unit. I used a newer model and dislike it (the one with the big touch flip down screen the Vedetta). This old standard just keeps working. I banged the GPS unit and loosened the connector when I dropped it on the floor of the car. If I spent some time and glued the cover on the GPS unit back together (it is a really simple clamshell snap together deal), the thing would work perfectly again. I don't really care so much about the GPS updates anymore. Photo enforcement is at virtually every single intersection in Chicago now, and I don't use this much in the city. Honestly, if the thing could just display my speed without that wart, I'd be really happy. You can read the long review, or just take my word that a guy that has owned this for three years, has never gotten a ticket while using it, and is still happy with the thing. It is ugly as sin but it works just fine.

January 8, 2010 update. The Railroad signal also works, it went off near a railroad track. The Emergency Vehicle alarm has gone off a lot lately, for police cars and Ambulances. Very nice.

The display has gotten a distinct burn in for the speed display (I'm testing Cobra's warranty repair service with this January 23, 2010 a brand new core unit arrived quickly, Cobra made good on the warranty, no questions asked). The display does not work at all if you leave the detector in the cold, around freezing. Once the unit warms up it finally works, but it will be an ugly orange for a long time. And see the comments about getting a bean bag mount the suction cups do not work at all in the cold.

SOFTWARE update Cobra now offers 64 bit for Vista and XP software. It only took them 6 months to deliver the update. Boo on Cobra for pitiful software support. They get really bad marks for their inability to support their device. Follow the install directions very carefully.

October 10, 2009 update. The Emergency Vehicle alarm finally went off. Another that made me almost jump out of my skin, the noise is a lot like a police siren. A police car was pulling somebody over with siren going. Well before I could hear the siren, the alarm went off on the screen. I had already seen the lights before the alarm went off. If a police car is equiped with a special transmitter, the Cobra will go off.

September 26, 2009 update. Laser detector finally went off. About made me jump out of my skin. The sound is kind of Star Wars, crazy buzzy sound. The goofiest icon come up, its an image of a gun with a laser sight on it. But the good news it works. Definately works just fine. I've also had some fun with this unit, the Chicago area has a ton of construction with threatened photo radar speed enforcement. The amazing thing, if they ever turn on those radar guns that are out there right now, Chicago will make a ton of money. This unit warns for those guns a long ways in advance, and it beeps like insanity whenever I am on top of one. This thing really works.

June 2, 2009 Tech Support update. Well this is not the fastest company I have ever met. Web support via the web form is pitiful at best. Twice I entered the exact same information and never got a response over a 1 week time period. I finally used an email address (it's buried in an advertisement looking thing on the FAQ's) and got a response within two hours of their normal business hours. And I got a nasty gram from somebody telling me to relax, tech support would get back to me (after over 7 work days, I lost all hope), they did receive all three of my emails. Frankly, a really poor showing on their part. God help you if you need tech support from this company. The FAQ section for the radar detectors is just awful. Pretty well worthless.

Back to Original Review:

The really great news, this radar detector flat out works. It works well. I'm amazed at how well it works. Photo, Ka, X, and Caution Zones saw them all, they all work just great thank you very much. Haven't seen a laser alert, emergency vehicles, or a Railroad crossing alert yet; but I'd have every reason to believe those will work when they are really there.

The good 1/2 mile down the road, Ka chirped on, the lovely lady said Ka Alert, and two balls of signal strength. Sure enough, a 1/2 mile later down the raod, a policeman with radar pulled somebody over. Pretty darn good proof the unit can detect radar.

Unboxing I've posted some pictures of unboxing. It's actually some pretty decent packaging and got my heart rate up just a bit. You see, I used to be addicted to radar detectors. And then Laser came along, and I lost interest, (I'd already been through X band, then get a new one that would do Ka, enough already). Well that whole world has settled down now.

What is in the box? This funky looking radar detector with a big honking screen on the back end of it. And this really hideous half arm, half wart hanging off the side of the body; the GPS receiver. A coiled power cord. A goofy looking female mini-USB to male USB cable. A really crummy cheap window suction cup mount. A chunk of velcro. And an instruction book bag.

The installation. Ouch. The first step, you have to register the GPS and update the database. If you use the wrong model number to register the GPS you'll be ripped off your lifetime Aura database updates. Make sure you use the XRS 9960G model number not the number on the radar detector. And you have to input the serial number off the little dinky GPS receiver. Once registered, you then have to download and install a little piece of software that will live on your computer forever it's called RDA GPSL-55 (you got me how they came up with that gorgeous name). Then you are supposed to plug in the USB cable and the GPS receiver. Now if you have Vista, the website says you are on your own. With XP they give you step by step instructions. Well, the best deal, if you have Vista or XP 64 Bit don't even bother. The software / driver will not work at all, nothing, nada. So you have to find a 32 bit machine to do this update. My Aspire One netbook did the job. Then you have to remove the GPS when you start up the RDA GPSL-55 software, and you have to enter the GPS serial number. Once all that craziness is done, you might get lucky and the GPS will update with it's brand spanking new database. Mine finally did after three tries.

So software set up just not cool at all. Forget 64 Bit operating systems. And forget about any kind of real live software support on the Cobra website; it just doesn't exist at all.

So now that the little reciever is updated, I installed this in the car. Cobra needs to take a lesson from Garmin, or the GPS industry, about car mounts for devices. They shipped the cheapest piece of garbage to hang this on your windshield. The metal is nothing to bend. The suction cups are exactly that, suction cups that are very hard to push on or remove. So, bottom line this thing looks like garbage hanging from the windshield.

The power cord is way too short. I had to stretch is a long ways to work in my Buick Rendezvous (I know a radar magnet) if those suction cups ever let go, this unit is flying to the back of the bus quickly. The Mercedes was a little better.

There's one other critical design flaw. The socket for the GPS receiver is a standard mini-USB connector; cheap and not exactly super secure. Definately not an automotive type connection. The power socket is right beside that GPS socket. The GPS almost covers up the power socket, and when you stretch the power cord, it stresses the GPS connection. First time around, the GPS wasn't seated right because the power cord pulled it out.

Now the good stuff. Power this up, and you are greeted by one of the nicest female voices I've heard on an electronic device in a long time. And then you get to look at the display. Well Cobra could have spent maybe five more dollars on this display. It is super low res, the icons are really goofy looking and super clunky. For some unknown reason, they love how much electricity the unit is getting, there's this huge battery in the default display that tells you 14.7V, or whatever is going in. I would haver rather seen the speed displayed.

Customization through the menus is not super intuitive, there's only 4 buttons to work with. They don't always do exactly what I thought they should, a minor annoyance.

Now on to the testing. About 1/4 mile from a camera monitored intersection, the displayed turned to a camera with a green donut, and the Cobra lady said Photo Alert. A bit closer, and an arrow appeared at the top. Closer and the donut got larger and yellow. Closer still, the donut turned red, by that time I was pretty much at the edge of the intersection. This was pretty cool. Worked every single time.

I found a policeman staked out on a road, doubled back and got the Ka alert mentioned at the top of the review. Given the two level signal strength, it wasn't a false alarm. And the fact that he pulled somebody over, well it was real.

The Caution zones is kind of interesting. It's apparently areas where a lot of accidents have been reported. Sure enough, Caution came on with an exclamation point in the middle of the donut, and Cobra lady told me Caution Alert. The color change was exactly like the Camera alert. The two that came up were in front of a school at a very busy intersection. And the second was in front of a hospital.

False alarms. It did a pretty darn good job rejecting them. O'Hare airport is notorious for heavy duty false alarms everywhere. I got X and Kz alarms, but all were only one ball signal strength. The other great thing this unit does, once the alarm is set, you get the voice plus a tone. Then you get tone. And if the signal doesn't get stronger, the tone gets quieter; but the X or Ka radar gun icon stays lit up. It's a really great way to work.

Multiple alarms got a caution and an X band alarm at once. The Caution stayed huge and the X band radar showed up on the screen. So both were there to see.

Highway driving. Well this is a bit strange and will take some getting used to. Those Caution and Photo alarms are all based on GPS coordinates data. When you travel along a highway, sometimes you will pass near one of those areas. Well you have to look closely at the icon for the direction the arrow is pointing. If it's pointing straight up, that zone is probably on the road in front of you. If it's to the side, well it's probably not a highway warning, but a street parallel to the highway. It's tricky to see at first.

Oh the GPS speed was off by between 1 and 2 mph. I know this because I've calibrated this vehicle's digital speed display with two Garmin GPS units. The Cobra thinks the speed is really 1 to 2 mph slower than it really is.

So bottom line it's a really good unit, that does exactly what they say it does. It could be much better built. The Passport series from Cincinnati Microwave is much better built their GPS receiver is built in. However, their displays are all words, no pictures. So Cobra wins there. As Cobra's highest end radar detectors, they did a great job on the things that count; and did a poor job on the visual part.

The part that I find amazing, couple this with a Garmin Nuvi GPS; and it will be hard to look at the road. I'll almost need a copilot to help me with all these gadgets! Safe travels.

So I have been using this Radar Detector for about 5 days now and loving/hating every moment of it. I am not convinced....here are my thoughts.

The box includes the detector, a suction cup mount (works well), a piece of velcro for dash mounting, a gps receiver dongle, a usb to mini usb cable (12 inch cable), and of course the power cord.

What I like:

1. The unit is designed well and mounts very easily using the suction cup mount (I do not want to permanently attach adhesive backing velcro to my dash).

2. The ability to update the GPS dongle with up to date camera and speed trap information (When the site works)

3. The intuitive (compact) display that gives you basic GPS info (direction and so forth).

4. The voice feedback when an alert is detected.

What I dislike:

1. The website was down for-ever and in FireFox shows that it is blacklisted by Google. Internet explorer does not show it blacklisted and works just fine.

2. The updates to the GPS dongle must be on a Windows based PC running a 32bit OS. MAC's are not supported.

3. Horrible support. I tried to call when the site was down to see if they had a solution....no response, no call backs.

**NOTE: You download a small software from the website which you install on your pc..once installed you plug the dongle in and you must enter the serial number on the back of it so you can get the update...

My experience:

I live in the land of State Troopers (New Jersey) and commute to the city that invented the Traffic-Cam (New York City). My total round-trip commute is about 125 miles daily...therefore I spend a lot of time in my car. I have never felt the need for a Radar Detector because I was afraid that it would make me drive a little bit more faster then I do already.. That being said I definitely wanted to give this puppy a shot and see what it detected and what it did not.

I finally got the GPS dongle updated with the latest database that had updated information about camera's, speed traps, etc....apparently this is updated every 24 hours (when the site is up and running). Plug in the dongle and turn the unit on and you are ready to go.

First test, locally around my home where I know we have 3 live cameras at traffic lights and 2 dummy cameras. I drove my little car near the dummy cameras and no alert...drove past the live cameras and 2 of them showed an alert while the 3rd did not. I made a note of the 3rd one so I could add it to the database (you are allowed to login to the site and add updates for all users .. nice feature). Quick Note: June 25th Evening Drove home via this camera that I added to the database and voila it actually worked...the device notified me of a camera.

Second test, the police department in our area tries to be nice and instead of issuing citations they install these radar's on wheels that notify you of your speed so that you can control yourself (ha...I do live in the boonies). What better way to test a radar detector then to drive by these things...without facing a real officer. :-) I know of 4 of them on a regular basis. I drove up to two of them...meaning driving towards them and the detector started to signal an alert..probably about 3/4 of a mile before I got there. Awesome. Now then I drove up to two of them from behind....on one I got an alert 1/2 mile before and on the other about 1/4 mile before I got to it. It works..

Third Test The good ole' NJ highways with state troopers galore now in unmarked Dodge Chargers. Woo Hoo...this was going to be fun...but I didnt go nuts driving fast...just wanted to see this puppy work. I start off by changing the device to Hwy mode and off I went. I drive on i78 about 45 miles one way each day and there are a lot of speed traps. The rate of detection here was disappointing...about 50% of them never caused a signal...but that could simply mean the trooper wasn't looking for anyone. Still...pretty good. PS. I did turn on all of the available bands on the unit (it covers 15 different ones).

Fourth and final test, The city of the cameras! I drove through the Holland Tunnel into NYC ( I had turned the device to City mode before entering the tunnel). Naturally I got a lot of false K Band alerts (to be expected in dense areas with lots of wireless garbage). However here is where this thing came out in full force. It detected EVERY camera at EVERY light and warned me about it.... Gotta love that. I knew about most of the cameras it found but there were 6 that even I missed on my route from the Holland tunnel to midtown NYC. AWESOME.

Why then is my rating of this product 4/5 (i would have given it a 3.5 if I could). I simply dis-like the fact that the website is useless and blacklisted to boot. I also am a bit annoyed that I have to use a Windows PC at 32bit to install/update the GPS dongle. I use 64bit operating systems on a regular basis and mac's when I can...so the ability to update on any of them would be awesome...but I cant hate them for not supporting 64bit...a lot of companies don't. My main complaint is that its not MAC friendly. Last but not least...my main concern is that if people don't buy enough of these types of devices, the database will become outdated and thus the GPS dongle will be just that...it will tell you which way you are going but not be able to alert you to traps, troubled areas etc.

I still think the product is great but Cobra needs to work on implementation a little bit more. 3.5/5 for me...but since no halves are allowed its rounded up to 4.

English-speaking Cobra Radar/Laser Detector is truly one of the best, bar none! While relatively easy to operate and comprehend, this device is recommended for city dwellers and highway travelers alike.

After opening the package and viewing the sophisticated electronics, we dreaded having to spend lots of time reading the operation manual; however, this was not the case. After roughly 22 minutes of reading, probing, and mounting the unit on our dashboard, the device was ready to go. Note that the product includes fixtures for optional windshield mounting too, but dashboard operation seemed more agreeable to avoid having the required power cord dangling above.

The four buttons are pleasantly minimal with settings for:

* City or Highway

* Dimness or brightness (via OLED technology = Organic Light Emitting Diode)

* Mute

* Power on/off with volume control

* Menu for further optional programming

Mute is a good feature when using this device with a normal GPS system; both sound and image are dually indicated. However, the unit includes an audio jack if one desires to connect to a speaker for sound amplification. Plus, using the Mute control, one may view additional features, such as the vehicle's actual voltage read from the cigarette lighter, which provides a 'low battery' warning; and there is a programmable compass; display of numeric longitude and latitude (via the GPS), and much more.

The Global Positioning System addition is brilliant, but we wished it provided directions like ordinary GPS's. This one detects new and existing photo enforcements; caution areas; speed alerts; programmable user location alerts, updatable GPS database information and more. Perhaps in the future, drivers will have all of these features worldwide including telephone and email capability all-in-one.

We did not experience false alerts in our tested urban and suburban area. For example, there were warnings for speed indicator units (warning drivers to be cognizant of their speed); law enforcement vehicles in transit (note that "parked" unattended units generated no alert); regular (non-cargo) trains did not alert; however, regular rails like AM-Trak picked up signals. At the local international airport, the device did not beep constantly, but rather it alerted us correctly when obvious vehicles were nearby. Note that in the city, we had unclear alerts, but realized there are often "unmarked" vehicles that aren't so obvious. With Intellimute technology, the system worked as expected. In fact, Cobra knows if our vehicle is moving slowly or stopped; it detects and displays RPM and may be programmed with Activation Points.

The only potential downside is the laser's need for 360 degree view of the vehicle's surroundings. If the laser is obstructed by object(s) or severe foul weather (i.e. dense rain, snow, smoke, or fog), such Acts of God may prevent its operation. Also, the alerts only speak, "K Alert" or "Ka Alert" and few others; therefore, one must read the manual to decipher the alert code.

Thus far, Cobra XRS 9960G is fully legal in all 50 states.

I purchased this item almost immediately after it came out. I have had it for about 14 months.

My experience with this radar detector is a mixed one. I have found it useful several times but this device has many fundamental flaws in the design.

1. GPS receiver stopped working.

It worked OK for over a year. Then all of the sudden GPS reception started to become intermittent. It would say "GPS signal OK" but show the wrong direction of travel and then get "disconnected". The satellite symbol on the screen showed no reception. I have not moved or changed cars or position of the radar detector or anything to affect the performance of the GPS. Recently, it says "NO GPS signal. See user's manual". I have even held the device under an open sunroof for 20 minutes. It still does not receive the GPS signals.

2. Screen is burned-in.

I like to keep my screen on. It displays the battery voltage and the direction of travel (when it worked) which I find informative. In the beginning, i loved the OLED display colors and contrast. However, over the 14 months that I have owned the product, it has severely burned a pattern on the screen. The pattern is easily visible on any other screen and it is very annoying. A pixel that is brightly illuminated on the home screen glows dimly compared to one which is off on the home screen if these pixels are the same color and intensity on another screen.

3. Form and fit

One word. UGLY. While useful, this device could stand a face lift. The screen is larger than the thickness of the body, requiring the front of the detector to be taller than the back. Also, the GPS receiver stick out like a sore thumb and it gets in the way of the power cord.

4. Response to actual radar signals.

I find that this receiver is not very fast at detecting radars. I see the cop car with the radar before this ever warns me most of the time. Also, it is impossible to drive past a drug store (walgreens, cvs, rite aid etc) without setting of the detector. I can live with the false alarms but I would prefer that it would warn me sooner when the real radar guns are present. Also, the signal strength of police radar rarely gets above 4 dots. It is rare that I see the red dot glow.

With that said, it has saved me from at least a couple of tickets so it paid for itself but I think it should perform better.

I hope Cobra is reading these reviews and actually working on improving their products. I think there is great potential in these devices but somehow this one is missing the final touches to make it a great product. Improve your software cobra, and improve the reliability of your hardware and hire a better mechanical designer for the external form of the device and you will have a product your competitors will envy.

I purchased this unit for my wife, who needed an upgrade.

There are already some very thorough reviews on this, so I'll just cover the salient points.

First, there is some criticism of the GPS unit sticking out the side of the unit. It does look a bit punchy, but there is a reason for this design. Cobra had come out with an integrated GPS design, but they were sued by Escort, who has a patent on the integrated rd/GPS design. Cobra got around the patent by their new design.

I think that most rd's have sufficient sensitivity, so the issue for me is falsing. My wife's old rd falsed on everything, so it became almost useless as one learned to ignore it. Not a good thing if this time it's really a wolf out there.

I have the gold standard in rd's (after the Escort 9500)the Bel rx65, so I'll compare to that.

The Bel consistently falses in 2 places in the town next to me. The Cobra did likewise, as well as a few random other places, presumably from other rd's (a huge mis-feature of the old model).

It falsed on an X band door opener is Worcester. The Bel never does.

It seemed to have about the same detection range as the Bel when I encountered real radar.

Conclusion is that the Cobra will irritate a bit more that the Bel, but not bad.

I think that the LCD screen is a bit of overkill, but for any setup tasks, it's superior. I prefer the simpler LED setup for in-use.

The overall design is a bit bizarre, and the unit is quite large.

The mounting suction cup bracket is a joke flimsy, and the rd is just supported by the bracket's strength. Consequently, it bounces up down as you drive along. There is an alternate Velcro patch provided and we will go to that, once the other problem is solved...

The freaking power cord is too short! As mounted on the windshield, the power cord is pulled tight across the radio and heater controls (Ford Fusion). I figure that the accountant that did most of the design work decided that they could save 13.7 cents per unit if they shortened the cord.

For the GPS, you download a small program from the Internet, so that you can plug the GPS into your PC (not a Mac), and periodcally update the database. After installing the program, you plug the GPS in for an update, and Windows detects new hardware. It now wants a driver. The instructions never mention this part, but after 2 tries, I figured it out. When you install the program, you are putting the driver on the PC.

Other than the few design gaffs that I mentioned, it's not a bad rd.

I would not recommend this model. If you don't care about the GPS feature, there are better options out there.

This unit cost $208 from Amazon. The Bel rx65 can be found for as low as $263 at the time of this writing. For the extra ~$60, you can get a better unit. Remember, one avoided ticket will probably pay for the purchase.

In this case, my wife was OK with this model. I would have sent it back.

Addendum, 1/26/2010

Although my wife is the primary user, I have driven her car quite a bit in the last few months.

I have to admit a change of heart with this device. I now recommend it.

I like the auto-off/on feature, where it detects when the car is off, and shuts the detector down after 15 minutes. It then starts up automatically when the car is started. Totally hands off. All Fords keep the cigarette lighter live with the key off, so this eliminates the hassle of turning on and off.

It detects emergency vehicles that send out an alarm frequency.

The GPS feature is not a big deal where we live, but it does know, and warn, about naughty intersections. There are only a few in our area.

It falses maybe a bit more than the bel RX65, but then again, it doesn't false on the low morning sun on laser.

I like the lcd screen versus the typical led display. It allows for a very flexible display of information. I have found that after it self-mutes, a quick glance at the screen gives a very good status update.

In short, I've come to like this detector a lot and recommend it.

The reasons that I bought this charger is because it has a docking stations which can be used to charge and store the unit when not in use. After the charging is completed, the docking station will enter a "floating charge" mode to prevent overcharging. Some other charger need to be monitored carefully since overcharging can damage the battery. With this unit, I can just leave it and forget it... Also, this unit is small enough that my wife can use it to jumpstart her minivan. Some other multifunction charger are so heavy, you'd have to be a weightlifter to carry the thing.

Unfortunately, about 1 week after the 1-year warranty period ran out, the unit stopped accepting a charge. That is, I could not charge it either using the cradle or directly from the wall adapter. I called Schumacher and they could not offer me any help. A shame, but I can no longer recommend this device and I will be looking for a replacement.

UPDATE: I paid $88 for this when I purchased it in February, 2008. I see the price has increased, so I just wanted to note this difference so you take my comment about 'heck of a deal for the price' and 'comparison shopping' in the appropriate context. I am still very pleased with the unit but wanted to make clear that I am no longer completely certain that it's the best deal on the market. I have not recently done any comparison shopping to figure out if other units prices have changed.

Original review: Let me begin by saying that this is a sturdy, well-built piece of machinery. It also clearly can get the job done, period. My V6 Toyota Land Cruiser had a _completely_ flat battery, with a totally crudded-over positive terminal. I hooked this puppy up, and my engine ROARED back to life within 10 seconds of the connection being made. I haven't ever heard my engine start like that before, even when jumped from other jumper packs. Now, to comment on some other aspects of this equipment: It comes with a charging cradle, but you don't need to use it, because the AC adapter that plugs in to the cradle can also be plugged directly in to the jumper pack itself. So you can just stash the AC adapter in the car with the jumper pack, for mobile use. Also, this _can_ be used to power small appliances, but you'll need a cigarette-lighter adapter, because this doesn't have a regular outlet, only a cigarette-lighter outlet. Anyway, this is a heck of a deal for the price. I did a lot of comparison shopping to get the best value, and I'm very, very pleased.

I purchased this unit based on all the positive reviews, but unfortunately, I cannot say the same. I guess I must have received a defective unit. The main battery would not charge through the dock and the LED's on the dock were not in synch, as it showed full charge whether the main unit was attached or not, even before charging. The battery charged fine on its own and I concluded that either the dock itself or the battery contacts must be faulty. I could have done without the dock, but the idea of unprotected contacts being bare makes no sense. What made me decide to return it however was the unpleasant experience with Schumacher. After 3 days of calling, each time I was given the run around and they had no records of my issue (Like I was calling for the first time). Finally they decided I had to ship the entire unit (at my cost) so they can "test it". So much for customer service and warranty on a brand new unit out of the box. I decided to return it to Amazon and they paid for the return shipping. The 3 stars is a balance of 1-2 stars for the product, 0star for Schumacher, and 5+ stars for Amazon.
