Swiss+tech crank Flashlight Test Results

It's not heavy, but is big: 9.5" tall and 2" thick at the top part. Will take up some space to store.

Used stopwatch to time this.

1. After full discharge 1 minute crank

Flashlight: About 4 minutes, lost 70-80% intensity, in 5 minutes full discharge. Good enough (compared to other such flashlights which do far worse), so I find this reliable.

Is useful in many ways: for checking engine, tires, power failure at home etc

2. After full discharge 1 minute crank

Emergency red beacon (blink/siren) (without siren as volume was kept on zero)

At about 28 minutes, started loosing intensity. At 41 minutes, quite dim, 46 mnts really low, 49 mnts still blinking but really low not usable. So I'll stop here.

3. After full discharge 1 minute crank

Radio volume at mid level, good until 9 minutes, then volume goes down and in a few minutes stops.

This I think is a unique device, with siren, beacon, flashlight, radio, hammer, seat belt cutter.....

I find this reliable and will keep in my center console in my car where I can blindly reach it in case of emergency.

I wanted a car-escape tool that also had a flashlight and a dynamo crank to recharge it. This was one of three I found and I went with this one because it looks flatter and easier to store. The radio is a nice addition so it can double as a disaster situation news source. I also really like that the rechargeable batteries are removable AA batteries so if you already have other methods to recharge the same type of batteries, you can recharge them with other rechargers and then put them in this tool. It can go the other way too, if you feel like cranking for two hours, you can fully recharge two AA rechargeable batteries for other electronics :). There's an optional AC adapter you can buy and connect to this tool to recharge the batteries that way or run the lights/radio off AC power. I couldn't find the adapter online for sale so probably have to call swiss+tech for it. Everything that I tested works. I didn't test the hammer on any windows but it looks solid. I didn't test the seat belt cutter on anything other than paper so not sure how sharp it is. I didn't test if backup batteries would work.

Minus 1 star for the dynamo causing lots of static/interference on AM radio, so you can't crank while you listen to AM radio. But FM radio, lights, sirens work while cranking. Also it is 10 inches long, which is bigger than I expected but it still fits in the center console of my '98 Accord. But that's more of a mark against the seller/Amazon for lack of information on its dimensions.

For the money this is a nice tool to keep by my driver's seat for emergencies. I bought one for each car because the price was good. Admittedly, it doesn't do any one function like a dedicated tool (radio, flashlight, etc), but it does everything well enough for me to be confident using it stranded on the side of the road. The fact that the hand-crank is easy enough for my three year old to operate and powers everything sufficiently, is fantastic. Now I occupy her attention in a stressful situation.

I only wish the flashlight was a bit brighter and that it received NOAA weather channels. But if any event occurs big enough to be on NOAA here in Hawaii, I'm sure the public FM/AM channels will be reporting as well.

I purchased four of these units as presents for relatives. First, I was forewarned by other reviewers about the large size of these devices. I still didn't expect them to be quite as large as they were. The window breaker is something that needs to be kept immediately to hand, and frankly, I'm not sure where in an average car these devices could be stored and still be to hand in an emergency. But that isn't why I returned them.

On opening one of the packages and testing the device, I found that the radio did not work at all. This was not a battery problem. I had put in a set of fully charged Eneloop batteries. Finally, fiddling with the volume control intermittently caused the device to emit distorted audio. Obviously, the volume control potentiometer was faulty. Next I tested the flashlight, about which the most charitable thing I can say is that it is slightly brighter than a glowworm.

Overall, the build quality was very low. I have lived in Switzerland and can say that, based on personal experience, the Swiss are absolutely superb at anything to which they aspire to excel. I commend the sense of humor and irony that caused the manufacturers of this device to call themselves Swiss+Tech. Nevertheless I returned all four of these enormous, impractical and defective devices.

Had better gauge, at a cheaper price because of it's 3 outlet. Nice and extra long and durable. Had absolutely no problems with it. Great cable brand have bought them before. Mine did not have a safety cover for the middle plug. Which is a little annoying. But I guess if you not using any of them it shouldn't be plugged in lol.

Still great chord, no problems at all, even under very high loads chord did not even get warm.

To person review below this cable can definitely be used outside. Just keep the open area away from water lol.

It's not easy to find an extension cord with a good length and with multiple plugs already built in. This fit the bill and works great.

The wire is really durable, and the cord is absolutely massively long. It's fantastic. The three ports on the end have the grounding port included, so that's a peace of mind.

Instapark® Mercury 4S Ultra-slim Portable Solar USB Cell Phone Charger with Built-in 2,000 mAh Rech

Instapark® Mercury 4S Ultra-slim Portable Solar USB Cell Phone Charger with Built-in 2,000 mAh Rechargeable Battery Pack for Apple iPhone & other smart phones, Color BlackFirst off, let me say that this company has it right with sourcing great materials. Like using high grade mono crystalline solar panels and then having a nice non scratch/anti reflective coating.(this is a huge help when getting it to pick up even low levels of light)

Then it has a 2000 maH lithium ion battery on board that can charge my phone (which has a 1000mah battery) in the same time it takes a wall outlet. The time it normally takes from the wall is around an hour or so give or take 30 min.

For portability, it is the size of a 7" tablet or a paperback novel, so it is the smallest and most powerful charger to date for its size . This is due to using efficient materials and a methodology of keeping it simple.

User note: It has a lithium ion battery on board. So when it is a 100F out you need to cover the battery so it will not swell and blow up, or just fold the flap behind the panels.

If there is no sunlight, you still have the ability to charge the on board battery using a nokia charger that has a very thin barrel type connection. There is a rubber seal that peels off the usb and charger port to ensure it is protected from the elements. It is not water proof(submerge it in water), but it is water resistant(a light rain) and this is an awesome feature.

It has eye loops on each corner to strap this to a backpack or whatever you want to make your mobile charging platform. It is very light, robust and is half the price of similar brunton and sunlinq products(who use the lowest grade materials ie amorphous or polycrystalline solar panels). Mono-crystalline is the absolute best. Then there is nasa stuff, which is gallium Nitride, but me and you can not afford that stuff.

There is a charge indicator led on the battery pack to show the user if the battery is below 80%(Solid red LED will show) or above 80%(Solid green LED will show).

To ensure maximum life expectancy, the user should charge this manually using the nokia style charger for at least four hours. I did it over night as i do not want to sit and wait for it to be done. Then go ahead and use it as you would normally. This is not vital but will ensure you get a good base charge.

I live in Arizona so the charging results may vary slightly. As for performance, I made sure the device was completely dead by charging my phone and other usb devices. It took under 2 hours to fully charge the battery(from red led to green led)

My quick checklist:

1) High efficiency mono crystalline solar panels CHECK!

2) 2000maH battery ( twice the size of my phones current battery) CHECK!

3) Materials and workmanship is of the best CHECK!

4) If there is no sunlight, there is a backup method of charging CHECK!

5) It actually charges the on board battery and the external usb device at the same time(while exposed to the sun) CHECK! (Note: do not have your phone out in direct sunlight as it will ruin it if it is a 100F out and above)

This will fit into a purse or a glove box to ensure that you will always have a usb reserve to keep your vital electronics up and running and having to no longer rely on the wall plug(a wall wart).

Another main reason I chose this product is that I had purchased their larger 10W panel setup and love it. It is the bigger version of this and has no battery on board, two usb ports and is three times this size. To sum it up, the main reason I love this device is that this tool actually does what it supposed to and then some!. I would recommend this to family and friends and I feel that every dollar was well spent, even in this economy.

Very Important:

1) To ensure a quicker charge, make sure the solar panels are exposed to direct sunlight. For example: if the sun is directly above you at noon, lay the panel flat on the ground. This is perpendicular to the sun and means the best charging conditions.

2) Make sure it does not get exposed to anything hotter than 140F as the lithium battery will explode, just like your phone.

3)Wipe off the panels lightly to get the dust off before you fold it up again to further eliminate scratches.

4) Buy the bestek usb cable kit for like $6 on here to ensure you have all the right connections to charge this device or charge any device off this.

My purpose for buying a solar charger is to charge my cell phone while I'm hiking/walking a 500 mile trail in Spain this Fall. Before I purchased the Mercury 4S charger, I tried a different solar charger because it was a little cheaper the reviews were pretty good.

The first solar charger I tried was theOpteka BP-SC4000 Ultra Thin Solar Powered High Capacity (4000mAh) Backup Battery and Charger for the Apple iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4 & 4S, iPad 1 & 2, iPod Touch 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, & 5G. Following very spare directions I charged the unit by computer via USB. It charged full in a few hours and I hooked it to my phone (a moderately priced smart phone)that was about 40% charged before I began. The Opteka unit charged my phone to 100% in about 2-3 hours. So far so good. The power left in the Opteka was diminished by half. (There were only 2 bars lit out of 4, meaning it had about half its charging capacity left.)

I tried to recharge the Opteka to 4 bars multiple times in direct full sunlight. I must have had it in full sun for 20+ hours and could only get the battery charged to 3 bars, out of 4. I sent it back.

This product, the Instapark® Mercury 4S Ultra-slim Portable Solar USB Cell Phone Charger with Built-in 2,000 mAh Rechargeable Battery Pack for Apple iPhone (all generations) & other smart phones, Color Black arrived uncharged. The instructions specified that it should be left out in full sun for about 4 hours for a full charge. I laid it in full sun, per instructions, and a small green LED light lit up on the battery pack. With the Mercury 4S completely charged, I was able to recharge my phone in about 2 hours...and 2 days later, using the charge that was left, "fueled" my phone back up to 100% again. After the second phone recharge, the LED light on the Mercury 4S was red, which meant it was out of power. I placed it in full sun for 3-4 hours the next day, picked it up, and noticed that the tiny light was green and the battery was full again. And again, I was able to recharge my phone, twice.

I highly recommend this product on simply one attribute. Using only 4 hours solar exposure, this battery charger is full and ready to charge my phone, two times.

Buy Instapark® Mercury 4S Ultra-slim Portable Solar USB Cell Phone Charger with Built-in 2,000 mAh Rech Now

The product is firm, feels weather-proof, durable, and very rugged. Definitely ideal for camping or hiking, and even has a rubber plug for the USB port.

The product works just like you'd think! You plug in a phone (I use iPhone 4s but it works with any, basically) and put it in the sunlight and instantly the little battery appears and it starts charging! It's great!

On top of that, the device comes with a 2,000 mAh battery, so if you're not charging a phone you can just charge it. This is *especially* useful!

All in all, great product, no compromises. Does exactly what you'd expect, and certainly won't let you down. I'd highly recommend this product!

When I got this, it was much smaller and slimmer than I expected, and I said....hmm...probably won't work so well.

Your first time charging it, just charge the panel's battery, a good long time. I left mine all day in a sunny window. The green light came on, meaning a full charge. I fully charged a drained ipod touch, no problem. Today I plugged the ipod into to panel (it goes via the battery's USB), the battery light was red...as in not fully charged, the battery pack IS attached to the panel, keep in mind, so I don't know what part of the charging was from the sun and what part from the battery, but it charged it fully as quickly as a wall charger. Very impressed! My Goal Zero Guide 10 Plus is not compatible with my Ipod, via the panel itself, but their guide 10 battery pack is.... and I love that little charging kit (7 watt), but I thought to try this cheaper smaller one for fun. What's great about the Instapark, it is so tiny, I can throw it in my bag, and take it anywhere, it weighs next to nothing.

I have Instapark's Mars 100 solar panel kit too, which rapidly charges my Stanley Power Stations I use for power outs. They make a good product. Customer service, I have always gotten through right away and the tech people talk to you at length and know their products well. I'll be getting a few of these little 4 watt chargers as gifts, they are way way cool. Mine will likely live in the car's glove box, just in case of whatever, since I have the Goal Zero for home use. The little Instapark charges up super fast on the dashboard. Don't expect it to do a lot, just charge little things. It charged my cell phone, bluetooth, all pretty fast. It's adorable and cute and works! Reasonably priced and good quality.

It works, but not for very long. The battery is not capable of charging a modern cell phone for more than 20 minutes. In order to work the phone must be charging with the solar panels in direct sunlight and the phone must have some power left.

Same as the other review so he is not lying the cable is junk. I had the same error as him something about did not get first ak or failed connection. I tried the software provided by the manufacturers website because the cd I received was blank, also tried chirp and I tried shaving down the male end on the cable as suggested by the manufacturer for a better fit on the radio receptacle with no luck.

The radio works great the programming sucks because there are potentially a lot of different settings that go into each channel but once you get past that the radio works great and has a lot of advanced features like dpl and so on.

Again for the price its an awesome radio.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Follow up on this review. I figured out the problem with the cable which is user error. So after a more careful analysis of the manufacturers website, I saw that for the firmware release on my uv-r5 I downloaded the wrong program. The software for programming the baofeng is release specific with in a range of firmware. So after turning off the radio and holding the 3 button while turning it back on I saw that I have firmware **97**. So, I downloaded the corresponding software with appropriate driver for the serial cable and it worked.

Apologies for the confusion.

Programming cable doesnt work, maual is useless. However the low price masks alot of the problems. Bought this radio to use on the ham bands and the land mobile service for my volunteer fire dept.. However I havent been able to get all the channels programmed yet, due to the cable not talking to the radio. (radio fails to acknowledge first command) I think they were just trying to get rid of some bogus cables. Save yourself the headache and throw it in the dumpster where it belongs, and buy yourself a name brand programming cable!!!!!!!! I am a 9 year veteran of the computer repair industry so do not just chalk it up to user error on my part. Despite all the headache its an ok transciever and a stunningly brilliant radio for the price! So maybe I should just be thankfull that my Icom IC-91A still does its job very well that its not a time critical thing. But I do hate putting my Icom in the pocket of my turnout coat and then truck on up to a burning building with hoses going! Thats why I bought the Baofeng with cable specifically to be disposable, however if I have to invest this much time hand keying only 16 different channels I might not think its so disposable! argh but I digress BUYER BEWARE OF EXACTLY WHAT YOUR GETTING INTO!!!! If your a radio communications and computer technician/ hobbiest fine then it makes a good experiment. I wouldnt want to deploy a fleet of them though. If your a lay person, stay away unless you have very good freinds who are the aforementioned hobbiest/ technician otherwise buy from somewhere that isnt red china! But if you are into figuring out strange technology you might be into this thing. I like it ok enough just for use under my GMRS license

  • The new English,German,French instruction, more convenient and more humanized.
  • The New 2013 packing,more beautiful and quite well-done.

I saw this radio at a recent Indiana hamfest. I almost bought it there but decided not to due to never having heard of this brand. After researching it online and reading reviews I decided to find one. So far the radio seems to work great!!! After getting it programmed I took it out for a test trial. All in all both transmit and receive quality was excellent.

As with the reviews I strongly suggest getting the programming cable and software. The only issue I had was having to find the updated cable driver and radio software since my PC wouldn't recognize either. Just a few minutes of searching online and I was good to go.

This is my first dual band ht, and I would recommend it. I bought the radio, cable and speaker mic for under $100 including shipping. Also the extra batteries are pretty cheap.

I had hoped that since this was an inverter, the USB would be isolated from the 12V input. I'm not certain if it is or not, because I haven't taken it apart to look yet, but I still get bad ground loop noise when using this to power my media player and connect it into the vehicles sound system.

Double-checked it in another vehicle; still dead.

This thing also ran really, really hot. Maybe I got a bad one?

To me this radio works better than the small two way radios, thats why I bought it. Yes it's a little bigger than the 2 way radios, but what I really wanted was more clearly transmission and a longer range which is what I got.

Buy Midland 75-785 40-Channel CB Radio Now

This is a reasonable product for the price. I liked that I could power it with the included car adapter without any batteries required. With the small attached antenna, it seems the range from inside a car is probably only a few hundred yards. So I bought a magnetic roof mounted antenna at Radio Shack for $35 (I later saw one at a truck stop for $20), plus a $5 adapter to convert the normal CB antenna plug to the smaller plug on the Midland. This improved reception, I'm estimating to about a mile radius (my estimate is based on conversations I hear from truckers in the opposite direction on the freeway; at 60 mph (so about 120 mph differential speed), a conversation comes in and then fades out in about 1 minute total. But a 1 mile radius is still pretty pitiful for a CB, you really don't hear much of the chatter even on a busy truck freeway like the I-10 between California and Arizona. And transmission seemed even weaker; I couldn't get anybody from the opposite direction to hear me, but rather only people a few hundred yards in the same direction. So in short, if you want something to chat with a caravan buddy, two of these would likely work fine and are a great price (and you don't have to mess with batteries like with many newer handheld two-way radios). Add an antenna if you want the bare minimum ability to communicate with truckers. For anything more, you have to lay down more bucks for a much more powerful CB radio that can blast a signal and can pick up signals much farther away.

For those who buy a CB for their kids to have fun on family road trips, be aware that some truckers have really really foul mouths (I have a very high tolerance for those things, and even I think some of the things a few drivers say are just downright gross). It can still be fun, but be ready to turn down the volume!

I think you're missing a fundamental fact about handheld radios. They don't work well inside of a car. For people who are used to mobile CB's with an external antenna, of much greater length, sitting out on top of the car and using the body of the car as a ground plane... you just can't compare that to a handheld. You're going to hate it. If you're inside of the car, the metal body of the car is destroying most of your transmission. You need to get the antenna outside of the car. If that means getting the necessary adapters and wiring your handheld to a magnetic mount antenna on your roof, then so be it. You will find you radio is getting out MUCH farther with that external antenna.

I bought this to replace the battery in my cordless vacuum from Oreck. It was tough trying to find the correct battery in the first place. Soldering was required, and outside of trying to find my soldering iron, wasn't an issue. However, I would say this replacement never worked as good as the original, and in fact has diminished in performance surprisingly quick. (To the point, I'm not even using it any longer.) Could I have conditioned the battery better? I suppose that's possible, but in general I wouldn't recommend this as a replacement due to the difference in performance from the first charge.

Whatever you do, don't forget to recycle your old battery! In my case, I get to recycle both old/new batteries AND the vacuum!

Cobra CPI-150 Micro Port 150 Watt Power Inverter (Black)

Cobra CPI-150 Micro Port 150 Watt Power Inverter
  • Cobra Micro Port 150 Watt Power Inverter
  • 150 Watt continuous power/300 Watt peak power
  • USB output allows charging and operation of modern office devices such as iPod's, Blackberry's and cell phones
  • Dual purpose power cable/Airline and car source
  • Carry Case included for convenient storage when not in use

This is a great product. It is perfect in (almost) every way. Smallest 150 watt inverter around. Very quiet. Works both in the car and on a plane. Has both a 3-prong AC and USB powerpoints. It shines particularly well verses the 'big-black' inverters for traveling for 3 reasons. 1) Again, it is so quiet that more often than not you can't even hear it; 2) when you re-start the ignition on your car it properly resets itself and keeps providing power (unlike the 'big-black' units which are universally dumb and unpower themselves); 3) if your car's battery voltage drops (because it is cold...older battery...or you are not running the engine) this unit tends to keep working whereas most others sense the voltage drop and quit working. The only minor quirk with it is that the silver-tipped spring that you insert into the lighter socket is overly sprung and in some cars you need to occasionally re-push it into the lighter. An annoyance but not a deal breaker. Overall I cannot recommend this enough. The only other unit that comes close is the Xantrex 175 watt unit (#813-0291). It has all of the above qualities except that the airline portion of the adapter would not seperate correctly from the cigarette portion of its cord. This resulted in the unit's tip being slightly loose at the plastic seem of the cigarette portion of the adapter.

Get this adapter for your laptop! I tried two other adapters and they failed to support the load on my Sony Vaio Z series laptop adapter. Plus it comes with a nice little case and has the airline adapter. There are two fuses one in the tip and one in the adapter to help keep things safe. Highly Recommended!

I spent an absurd amount of time comparing the different inverters on Amazon and finally decided on this one. I'm glad I did, and I am a very persnickety designer. Unlike some of the other ones I was looking at, this one has a clean, slim design. Most inverters must be triple or quadruple the size and weight, if not more! This one is light and tiny, about half the size of a small paperback book, if even that. The plastic it is made out of is the high quality impact resistant stuff, not the fragile junk I was half expecting. The cord is detachable and is just right to keep the inverter out of the way of things like your shifter, but not too long that it's messy. The product comes with this nice little case for the inverter and cord which is pretty handy, perfect for storing it in the glove box. I just got it but have tested it out and it was charging my laptop. I recommend going with this one, you will be happy.

The product is great overall. Incredibly small for inverters (will be perfect for flying with my laptop), the power is not underrated, and the pouch it comes in is very handy.

The only downside is that it is noisy. I've heard noisier inverters, but this thing is far from silent. I can hear the cooling fan distinctly over my car's engine and road nice (and I have a pretty loud car).

Overall still happy with the product. I needed an inexpensive, compact power inverter that can be used in a car and on a plane.

First of all, it works. There aren't too many 150 watt inverters out there, so the fact that this is one, and it works, should be more than enough to buy.

Other pro's are that it is a good price, and it also includes a USB port so you can charge ipods/smartphones without any other coversion devices.

I used this for several hours with my 120 Watt quad core laptop on the road. I turned the power settings down as low as I could just to be sure I didn't fry something, but I had no problems. It gets a little warm, but not too bad. Yes there is a fan, and yes you can hear it, but it isn't really annoying.

The biggest area for improvement would be the length of the cord. It isn't super long, but I have been able to charge my phone off this while sitting in the back seat, you just have to have a long enough cord.

I would buy it again.

UPDATE: I've had this for about a year and a half now, and I've decided to take a star away. I don't use this thing all the time but it is starting to make some bizarre noises. Still a good product though.

Instapark® Mercury 4S Ultra-slim Portable Solar USB Cell Phone Charger with Built-in 2,000 mAh Rech

Instapark® Mercury 4S Ultra-slim Portable Solar USB Cell Phone Charger with Built-in 2,000 mAh Rechargeable Battery Pack for Apple iPhone & other smart phonesThis thing won't even take a charge. The instructions say when you place it in direct sunlight a red light will come on, and it'll turn green when it's fully charged. I've tried for days, having outside under direct sunlight, and also placed under a daylight-spectrum bulb, but it will not take a charge. Very disappointed, and now have to go throught the return process, what a pain in the neck.

First off, let me say that this company has it right with sourcing great materials.

I've been using this charger continuously [for well over a year] to maintain a little 5 amp-hour sealed lead acid battery and, on rare occasion, to charge a car battery. It has always worked exactly as advertised: brought charge up to correct level without over-charging. It stays cool, dead quiet and reliable.
