The battery died on my Scion tC and I went straight to Amazon to find a new one. I have had an optima Red-Top in my Prelude for about 6 years now and it still runs strong (Worth it for just the winter starts alone), so I naturally went for the same battery this time. As far as the battery is concerned:

......Works great right out of the box

......Battery was charged enough from the factory to get the car started right out of the box.

......Size and weight are very close to the OEM tC battery, It fit right in place with no mods. (Also, I do agree with the previous poster who said the terminal protector case would serve great as a booster to pick the battery up an inch or two. It's just a square piece of plastic)

As far as the shipping and packing by Amazon is concerned:

......First, I'll admit, I was concerned about the shipping based on what I read in the other reviews, but I know Amazon is on top of most problems pretty quickly and I was hoping they had addressed the packing issue by now. So I went ahead and ordered.

......Well, as soon as I opened it up, It was obvious they fixed the packing problem. It was packed VERY well. You can see in the pictures that the used chunks of cardboard pieces sandwiched between an inner and outer layer on all four sides. No cheap popcorn or anything.

......The battery arrived with no dents or scratches

......Never doubt Amazon, my son.

All and all....a great buy!

I have owned several Optima Red and Yellow top batteries, and these are about as good as it gets. To get any better, you'd have to spend twice as much money.

This was my first Optima battery purchase from Amazon. Order processing and shipping was first rate (as usual). The 'doorstep' price (with free super saver shipping) was better than any I found online or at a local retailerand I spent a lot of time researching my purchase beforehand.

Changing a car battery usually only takes a few minutes and a few wrenches or sockets, and I'm sure that as long as you choose the right size battery for your car it will work well. The application guide on the item page accurately included my vehicle.

I have to say that I had a little problem with my shipment arriving damaged, but Amazon stepped right up to the plate and hit a home run with their first-rate customer service. I was initially hesitant to purchase this because of the 'no returns on hazardous stuff' disclaimer, but rest assured that Amazon stands behind its products. And after my experience, I would strongly recommend Amazon for a car battery purchase.

I didn't realize what a straightforward way this was to get a battery for my Jeep Liberty. I was looking for a replacement for the original 5 year old battery and was pleased to find at the Optima Batteries web site they had one that fit my 2002 Jeep Liberty. I quickly found the battery on Amazon.com at a great price. The battery went right in my Jeep with a simple socket wrench. My local recycling guide pointed to somewhere to take the old one. The extra starting power is great.

Below is a copy of the email I got from Optima regarding a battery purchased from Amazon.

So be aware the the money you are thinking you are saving maybe costing you big time. You should also know that for marine batteries Otima is strongly reccomending the use of there $200 charger to keep them charged properly.

Hello John,

  • 22 channels combined with 38 privacy codes provide 836 privacy channels
  • 10 NOAA weather channels and scan function to locate conversations in progress
  • Unique battery-saver circuit, roger-beep, 5 call alerts, and key lock
  • Weigh 2.8 ounces, measure 2.3 x 5.9 x 1.5 inches (W x H x D), and backed by 1-year warranty

These were rated for 12miles and if you've ever done any research on these type of 2-way radios...regardless of the rating, if you're able to get a 1 mile range from them, you're a lucky few. I fully expected that disappointment. However, what I did not expect was that the rechargeable batteries that it came with were aweful. On a full charge, it barely lasted a trip to the mall on less than mild usage. Btw...there is no indicator to say if it is fully charged. I charged it for the recommended 10 hrs. Anyway...I had another pair of refurb Uniden that I got for almost nothing...that pair was just as good, if not better than this one which I paid $45 including shipping. Not a recommendation.

My needs were pretty close, about 1 mile. We were shuttling people, using 4 radios. Clarity was good, having to switch channels occassionally. Easy to use. We use for 6 hours at a time. In the future, I will carry spare disposable AA batteries if the rechargeable batteries lose charge.

Home Wall AC Travel Charger + Rapid Vehicle Car Plug in Power Adapter + OEM USB 2.0 Data Sync Connect Transfer Charge Cable for Verizon Wireless Escapade - Razzle TXT8030 - US Cellular PCD CDM8635 Cell PhoneThought I was getting a great charging solution but found the data cable does not charge an Escapade Verizon phone. Other parts work as described. Not sure what the data cable might do if you have the right software, but when the phone is plugged into the cable and the other end into a USB port no charging takes place. And no synching. Guess you need special software for that, which would have been nice, but I just wanted it as a USB charging option. Does Not Work. Make very certain that you know what your phone needs before relying on this bundle.

The products were sent quickly. The attachment to plug into the car from the phone is difficult to insert into the car. I have inserted other phone connections in the car so I don't think the problem is on the car side. The wall attachment works fine on the wall end. All the attachments are difficult to insert into the phone. I know that the phone is the problem because I have trouble using the original wall power cord connection also.

Best boat battery I've ever bought. I use on our runabout and we never have to worry about starting, radio, or any of the electronics. So much better than the cheaper batteries I had to replace after 1 or 2 seasons. My battery from 2008 is still running strong. Stored it on the boat disconnected all winter long and it was still at 12.5v and started the engine no problem. Just bought a second one (going with two of these vs one starter and one old style DC). Amazon super saver shipping delivered it to my door in 2 days! Love Optima and love Amazon to buy them!

Battery Tender 022-0150-AAA Waterproof 800 Charger/Maintainer

Battery Tender 022-0150-AAA Waterproof 800 Charger/Maintainer
  • Waterproof charging for lead acid batteries
  • Can actually work when fully submerged
  • Prolongs the life of the battery for 2-4 times normal life
  • Easy to install and can be mounted on or in the vehicle
  • Vibration resistant

It took an overnight charge but the tender did finallly toggle the indicator light to green. The packaging is marked with "Deltrane Corporation from Deland Florida" so its the same as the others that you'll see on-line from them. Seems to me that the one from triple A (AAA) cost less than those other offerings. I've only had it for a few weeks and only used it for 12 hours, but so far so good. The only thing I didn't like is that the LED indicator colors are YELLOW and GREEN and all of the information I've found on-lind said that the LED colors would be RED and GREEN. Not a biggy, just something to be aware of.

We have purchased one of these for all our vehicles, snow blowers, tractors, boats etc. anything with electric start. [All from Amazon I might add.] They are great! We live near the Canadian border in COLD country and, especially in winter, need batteries that are always at full charge. If the snow is blowing a gale, you do not want to have the tractor or snow blower fail to start! With the Battery Tenders, we plug them in when not in use and have never had a failure in starting cold engines. Without any reservation, I recommend this product as easy to use and reliable even for a woman to use.

I installed a sealed Optima Red Top 35-910 in my car. The Optima failed, was replaced under warranty, and then the replacement failed, as well. The Optimas did poorly in cold weather and wouldn't hold a recharge.

I purchased an Odyssey PC1200MJT because I need a more reliable sealed battery.

The Odyssey is just a bit smaller in overall size than the Optima, but apparently has more total plate size due to its conventional configuration.

The Odyssey has done well so far, but it is the warm season, so I cannot speak to cold weather performance.

However, the specs for the Odyssey are excellent. It is claimed to accept hundreds of charges without a problem (deep cycle), and to handle very cold conditions extremely well.

In regard to the purchase experience, this is the first time after several years of excellent service that I have been disappointed with Amazon.

The Odyssey qualified for Free Shipping, but I needed it sooner than the typical 5 7 days, so I paid an additional $27.00 for expedited shipping. My order clearly stated the total price including expedited shipping, but UPS showed 7 day shipping anyway! I don't know if this was the result of a technical error or what, but I contacted Amazon immediately. Amazon did nothing to correct the problem and would not refund the additional shipping fee! Delivery took a full week.

As Amazon has proven unreliable, I will look elsewhere before making a purchase from now on.

Buy Odyssey PC1200MJT Automotive and LTV Battery Now

I purchased my first Odyssey PC1200-MJT seven years back at a good deal from a major racing parts shop (S) I've dealt with for years for a low mileage 1979 Berlinetta Camaro I own. I needed a battery that would not eat another inner fender and battery tray out again like a brand new Walmart battery had done in only six months time. The Camaro was only driven about 20 miles once a year and its electrical system was perfect, but that didn't stop that 6 month old battery from destroying the Camaro's battery tray and inner fender liner at great cost to me. To say the least, I was really angry and determined this would never happen again.

I had read about the Odyssey MJT batteries and liked what I saw metal jacketed, sealed brass top post connections, small size per CCA, CAN BE MOUNTED IN ANY POSITION WITHOUT SPILLS. Battery life was also 6-8 years (with good care) in the factory literature, and I had seen reviews of it having lasted as long as 12 years and no, only using and charging a battery for twenty miles driving once a year is not good care. Okay, those specs and reviews softened the steep initial price considerably to which I added a new Odyssey Billet Aluminum Battery Mount of the correct size. Mounted in place, the new battery looked great. It fit the bill, as I needed something that could be left in the tight confines of the Camaro as moving the batteries in and out of my other antique vehicles wasn't as difficult.

Forging ahead, over the next seven years I still didn't drive the Camaro more than 20 miles once a year. But this time there was never so much as any wiring corrosion. In fact, the PC1200-MJT still looked brand new after removing it and wiping it off with some spray window cleaner with a cloth. Yes, after seven years there was a reason for removing it it was quite dead and had failed to start my stored Camaro for the first time. I removed a new battery from my '85 Pontiac Trans Am and started the Camaro driving it a while and checking everything before storing it again. Not knowing if the Odyssey battery here would hold a charge anymore after seven years, I took my time trying to bring it back up with a large NAPA industrial charger I had owned for many years. After a number of hours of close monitoring, I finally got the Odyssey up from a 20% charge to a small cranking charge. I also knew I needed a charger that would properly charge this AGM Odyssey battery without such close monitoring as my NAPA charger was not designed for AGM batteries and could easily overheat and destroy them. So, I purchased a Schumacher charger designed for AGM batteries and let it do its thing for several days. The new charger brought this Odyssey even further back to better health but I did notice it slightly heated the Odyssey while charging. Although it was very slight heating, that's not a particularly good thing for any sealed type battery. But, the PC1200-MJT was sufficiently recharged for good use.

Having a number of antique vehicles with AGM, sealed lead acid, and standard lead acid batteries, I started checking out what else was available in new chargers I could leave hooked up for longer periods of time on stored vehicles. I found the BatteryMINDer line and purchased one (12151) that could be mounted under the hood permanently one that would also desulfate and charge any style battery. I mounted the new 12151 charger with this old Odyssey battery into my '85 Trans Am. It offered full-time desulfation at a maximum of 1.5 amperes charge rate. The TA has a high horsepower small block 406 and a sound system of over 600 RMS watts (well over 1000 watts total). It also has a 140 ampere alternator to keep the power up when two Kenwood stereo amplifiers hit high power levels. So, I wanted the Odyssey PC1200-MJT back to 100% capacity if possible.

In the first few days of using the new BatteryMINDer, with the charger and engine off and the stereo on, I noticed the PC1200MJT battery would lose power fairly quick until I switched off the stereo while there was still enough power to start the 10.25:1 compression engine. After some weeks on the BatteryMINDer 12151, I checked the health of my PC1200-MJT again. After a 12 hour rest (charger disconnected), the battery was showing the same performance as a new battery 12.84 volts as the Odyssey paperwork stated for a battery charged to 100%. I noticed the stereo system could now play much longer with the engine off without apparently pulling the battery down. I could also see the PC1200-MJT AGM battery was charging back very quickly after starting the engine much faster than the previous new sealed Delco had ever recharged in the TA, and proving to me this Odyssey AGM battery recharges much faster by comparison. I already knew it held a charge longer without charging, proving the Odyssey stated longer shelf life.

Okay, I also purchased more new BatteryMINDer chargers after seeing so much first hand with repeated checks using an Amprobe digital volt/ampere meter. The chargers (12151 and a new 12248) have restored all my batteries, including one 13 year old diesel tractor battery that had been sitting around dead for years. But, aside from that, I've seen the quality of the Odyssey when a seven year old battery can be returned to like new electrical condition after reaching its expected service life in years. The military specs of the Odyssey also concerns more than the sealed metal jacket on this battery. It concerns how strong the battery is internally, and that tells me the battery is still physically in good shape internally especially after I did some load testing and saw how quickly the battery recovered. Any lead acid battery can be internally destroyed quickly from vibration (or heavy loads) the Odyssey is designed to take much more than others.

I also have a PC925-MJT in an antique 1957 Ford tractor, and another PC1200-MJT in another vehicle all are performing great. I bought the second two Odyssey batteries after having only seen the strengths of the PC1200-MJT after only a few years of use. A bad charging system (now repaired) on the old tractor took the brand new PC925-MJT down to 50% and a no start condition before I found the problem. The charging system was showing a proper charge in volts, but was supplying no amperes. Once repaired, and after the PC925-MJT had spent a short amount of time on another BatteryMINDer, it too came back to its brand new specs. Because of this, I now use BatteryMINDer desulfating chargers on all of my stored vehicle batteries. Obviously, you get what you pay for with the Odyssey as it is designed much stronger throughout than any other automotive battery especially the MJT series and Extreme series by Odyssey.

These Odyssey MJT batteries are almost bullet proof and well worth the money even if given almost no care. All you really need is a healthy charging system and to charge/desulfate them once in a while as needed. Oh, and the MJT stands for Metal Jacketed Top post. From what I'm seeing, my Odyssey batteries may outlast me if cared for properly with the proper BatteryMINDer desulfator/charger while not in use. The top terminals can also be easily adapted to side post wiring connections with no fear of wiring corrosion since the Odyssey batteries are completely sealed. Just be sure to order the proper battery size, terminal placement, and amperage for your application. Some might confuse the 1200 in this model to mean 1200 CCA but this battery actually supplies 550 CCA @ 0 degress Fahrenheit (725 CCA @ 32 degrees Fahrenheit). This is still more than enough for my Camaro or my Trans Am, even though the factory batteries were rated 600-700 CCA, as the Odyssey has a proven much faster charge recycle time than other batteries, provides greater power on initial high loads such as engine starting, and has a 70% greater life cycle. This is much like a deep cycle boat battery and an automotive starting battery combined. You get the best of both worlds with better vibration resistance to boot using this Odyssey. That alone makes it worth more than other batteries. My Trans Am's amplifier system can quickly reduce a standard starting battery to almost nothing and in no time that standard battery would be worthless (internally shorted and burned open circuits). The Odyssey takes it in stride. Need a battery that is able to withstand the pressures of racing year after year for a race car? Get yourself an Odyssey MJT and forget worrying. They don't leak and they are tough as nails.

I bought this as a starting battery for a Kohler home standby generator.

I bought it primarily because my experience with Sears Di Hard batteries was that they failed much too often after too short a time.

I cannot give an honest review at this time because while the Odyssey is supposed to offer a long and dependable service life, it has only recently been put to use.

Though initially expensive, I bought it because it is promoted as being of military grade and rated high for reliability.

I have Odyssey Batteries in most of my other cars, so when my Wife and I bought a new Z06, I began to think about an Odyssey for that, but when I looked at the catalog on the Odyssey web site, I saw that the Odyssey Battery which fits in the rear battery compartment of a C6 Z06 is not an exact fit and that the ".... vehicle battery restraint(s) may require modification."

I also noted that the dimensions of the Odyssey Battery (PN PC1200MJ) suggested for use in C6 Z06 were somewhat smaller than the stock battery and that the CCA rating of the Odyssey was slightly less, 590 vs 550. I contacted the folks at EnerSys, the maker of the Odyssey brand, and was told the modification to the battery hold down, if necessary would be minor. I also asked about the vent hose which connects to a stock battery to carry away battery fumes. This prompted a response from Kalyan Jana, Product Manager of AGM Products for EnerSys, the company which manufactures and markets Odyssey batteries. He told me, "Odyssey batteries do not require a venting system and therefore the PC1200MJT does not have a connection for the hose. As long as the battery is not installed in a gastight enclosure no special venting arrangements are necessary for any Odyssey battery."

One of the reasons I've become a fan of the Odyssey Battery is its very high pulse cranking current output. in short, "pulse cranking output" is not the same as "cold cranking amps" (CCA) and is a very high current draw for a short period while the engine is cranked during the starting sequence. Pulse cranking is usually defined as lasting five seconds. The LS7 in a Z06 has a very high compression ratio for a production engine and the battery is in the back of the car, at the end of a long cable run. Both those characteristics demand a battery capable of high pulse cranking current output. In that context, I, also, questioned Jana about the difference in CCA ratings and he responded, "The answer lies in how CCA is defined, which is: a 30-second discharge at 0ºF. Unless the user is planning to actually discharge the battery at 0ºF for 30 seconds, the CCA rating of a battery is pretty meaningless. What is of paramount importance in an engine cranking application is the number of amps a battery can deliver for 3-5 seconds (ie: pulse cranking amps) to get that engine turning rapidly. In that respect, an Odyssey battery will significantly outperform an OEM battery that is physically much larger."

As it turns out Delco does not rate it's batteries for pulse cranking amps but Odyssey does. The pulse hot cranking amps (PHCA) rating of the Odyssey PC1200 MJ is 1200-amps for five seconds. I decided to order a PC1200MJ and test it out.

So, how does the Odyssey PC1200MJ work in the real world? Well, first off, you don't have to modify anything to install it in a Z06. While the battery is a little smaller in length, its height is the same as the stock battery so the stock battery hold-down in a Z06 works fine. No modifications are necessary. Because the battery box in the back of a Z is so small, lifting a battery in and out is easier if you have one of those rubber strap battery carriers which attaches to the battery posts but, you can remove and replace the battery by hand if you have a strong grip.

Odysseys are shipped fully charged. I installed the battery, then let the car sit a week before I tried starting it. In spite of not having a charger connected either upon installation or after a week, the cranking speed was, perhaps, 10-20% faster than it was with the original battery. One characteristic which concerned me with the C6 Z06 was the LS7's somewhat slow cranking speed compared to the LS6 in my 2004. Going to the Odyssey battery solved that problem for sure!

The other reason I like Odyssey batteries is they have a long service life, usually 5-7 years and sometimes as much as ten years. Also, they are more tolerant of "deep cycles" (where you run the battery dead, then fully recharge it) than are most conventional battery designs, such as the OE ACDelcos. Thought I've not tested the deep cycle tolerance with the battery in my new Z06, I have run an Odyssey dead and charged it up several times in my 71 Coupe with no ill effects to date. Now that car uses a larger Odyssey, a PC 1500, but the engineering and materials used in of those two are the same only the sizes differ.

There's a downside to the Odyssey PC 1200 and that's weight. The Odyssey weighs about 4 lbs or about 10% more than the stock ACDelco. Hardcore racers might no like that, but I'll take the extra weight in exchange for the Odyssey's better performance and durability.

iKross Car Windshield Large Black Mount Holder - IKHD17 + 2-Port USB Car Charger Adapter + Sync USB Data Cable for Nokia Lumia 810, 920, HTC Window Phone 8X, 8s and More large SmartphoneI love this product, it's very sturdy even though it very light weight. It has never come loose from my window and it's been there for several months now. It's easy to use. The price was right. For me it's perfect. I'm so glad I got it.

I can't think of anything I would change about it. And I use the accessories that came with it too. Very happy.

I love this thing. It is large enough to securely hold my LG Optimus G and does not wobble or jiggle at all. Very secure suction cup mounting to the windshield. I've had several others over the years that would fall off by themselves, but I can't even pull this thing off. It does come off very easily using the little tab like you're supposed to. I can't really speak for the included charger though, as I haven't tried it. I'm sticking to my charger with a retractable cord.

I haven't tried the charger but I have the holder. It works wonderful--mounts quickly and easily, holds securely, releases at the push of a button. I leave the holder in the car while I can pop the phone in and out as desired. I need to purchase another one for the other car.

Works great with the Lumia 810's off--line maps guidance capabilities--works just like a Garmin.

The quality of the plastic and the rigidity of the mount make it a great choice. My iPhone 5 does not fit securely when I don't have it in a case because the mount is too big, so I wouldn't recommend it if this will be an issue for you. The USB ports on the charger are badly aligned so you have to play with the plastic contacts in order to get your cable to fit, and they are very close together so it can be a pain in the butt to connect two cables at the same time. I gave it 3 stars despite all the negatives because of the great price and quality of the mount

I thought of getting a car mount and got this product because of my NOKIA lumia 920.

Except for the 2-port USB Car Charger none of the products worked. I contacted the seller about the Sync USB DATACABLE and they did send me another one. But I had the same problem it worked for 5 minutes. I don't know whether its the Sync cable's fault or my phone's but when I connect it to wall charger it charges for few seconds and disconnects and charges again for few seconds and disconnects.... this cycle goes on and on.

And finally the WindShield Black Mount Holder. The suction wont work anytime for me. I use my mobile for directions all the time but this holder doesn't hold itself on the windshield.

I bought a new GPS and wasn't sure that I would need these chargers or not. As it turned out the GPS did come with everything that was needed to charge it, but it's nice to have back up I guess. For someone that is in need of a new charger because they've either lost or broken the original one, these are very good chargers.

I purchased this same item a couple of years ago and was disappointed by the short cord on the car charger could barely reach from the charger to the dash. This new version has a much longer cord...YAY. Finally I can stop worrying that I'll go around a corner too fast and unplug the charger!!! And it's also great to have a wall charger to fully charge the devise. The car charger doesn't charge well if you're using the devise at the same time. Just used this in a rental car for a trip from SF to LA...got it just in the nick of time.

The chargers work great and the tipexchange worked great. My only complaint is that this cord is not as long as my original and when you put the Garmin on your windshield, the cord is stretched very tight between the windshield and cigarette lighter and it occasionally pulls the Garmin off the windshield due to so much pressure.

Tekkeon MP1580 TEKCHARGE Mobile Power Pack and Battery Charger

Tekkeon MP1580 TEKCHARGE Mobile Power Pack and Battery Charger
  • Uses USB to charge up to two pair of rechargeable NiMH batteries. Uses AA Alkaline or NiMH rechargeable batteries
  • Provides a whopping 1000mA output
  • Regulates output voltage. It has charging circuitry that will not overcharge your rechargeable batteries
  • Connects to any USB device cable

The best feature of this charger is that it uses AA batteries. I keep NiMH rechargeables in it. This allows me to use my good charger to maximize battery capacity, but if one of the cells failed while I was out & about, I could put in a set of alkalines. In most of the backup battery units, if a cell fails...you're hosed and have to replace the entire unit. But here you'd just replace the bad cell and be running again. I carry one of these when I travel for work. When out of the office I'm on my iPhone constantly, and always need to re-charge during the day. This allows me to recharge without being tied to a wall or my laptop; perfect in a cab, on a plane, etc.

Buy Tekkeon MP1580 TEKCHARGE Mobile Power Pack and Battery Charger Now

I bought this along Sanyo Eneloop batteries, and they works very well as a combo.

Be aware, that cheap batteries will give cheap results. I had other NiMH AA batteries which I used on flashlights and small gadgets, they did were not upto the task when used with this product.

Cheap batteries are good enough for flashlights and even some cameras, but they lose voltage when sustaining a constant discharge for a long time.

A USB port needs to provide 5V with current between 500~1000 mah depending on the device, so many cheap batteries alcaline or NiMH run out quickly before starting to charge to a respectable degree. And sometimes the current draw is to much and they wont hold for more than a few minutes.

If you see 4800 mah or 5000 mah AA batteries, distrust them. They are most of the time counterfeits or cheap low quality chinese batteries. At best 600~900mah, they don't hold their charge well when heavily strained and their voltage is max 1.3V when fully charged. Good NiMH reach a maximum ~1.4V when not on continuous discharge.

The Sanyo Eneloops are rated 1900mah, but deliver like 2000~2100 mah. This japanese batteries deliver more than what they are rated. You will find many literally over-rated chinese batteries, be careful.

This device is a emergency USB charger, is not meant for fully charging any device.

For example:

The 3.7V 1000mah Li-Ion on my hand held camera is charged to 66~80% with 4 Sanyo Eneloops on this device on aprox. 6 hours. Then the sanyo batteries are fully drained. With the result of a little over an one hour of runtime on the charged camera. The usual fully charged runtime is 1 hour and 30~45 minutes depending on various settings.

The more mah the battery of your device require, means more hours and more sets of batteries. So if your device is power hungry, you'll have less talk/filming/music time.

If you power exclusively various USB devices you might prefer buying dedicated USB chargers with integrated Li-ION batteries. If just one USB charged device like an android phone, just by extra dedicated batteries for that device.

I used AA devices and various USB Li-ION powered devices, so this product is a convenient jack of all trades.

A warning related to this device. When it finish charging your device, meaning the AA batteries are depleted, its capacity light go off automatically, do not fall on the trap of turning the switch it off and on again with your device connected. It will start to draw off energy from your device, discharging it. This product is also a USB AA battery charger for AA batteries, when you turn it off/on again after depleting your AA batteries it will try to charge them. This is a convenient feature to charge your AA batteries from your computer or wall-socket adapter. So if your mp1580 is with only one of three capacity lights (33% or less charge) is probably not a good idea to charge a device with it. Because after fully depleting the AA batteries, after a while it still lights up one light after an off/on on the switch. Since that one light means 1-33% which is not helpful.

So after this product shut off automatically after charging a USB powered device, either fully recharge or replace the batteries before trying again to charge a USB powered device. Do not fall on the illusion that you can take extra juice from the depleted batteries. I'm being overly redundant, but is for a good reason.

This issue is my only problem with an otherwise excellent general purpose device.

With the above caveats general use is simple and straight forward. The case is small and reasonably sturdy plastic. Is not meant for high impact, treat it as you would your camera or your smart phone.

In short this product is a convenient general purpose emergency charger for your USB powered devices and USB powered charger for your NiMH AA batteries to charge from your computer or wall socket if you have the wall adapter.

I repeat again if you only want to power USB devices, get a Li-Ion backed powered USB charger, they are bulkier, heavier and more expensive, but they hold charge for more power hungry devices. Some high end models can even recharge your laptop batteries or powered it like if you were had it connected to the wall. Most if not all are chinese, I can not recommend any in specific, I saw some generic no-name which worked well and other which did not.. Most "branded" models seem re-packaged versions.

AS is, I'm satisfied with this particular product.

Update: 2012-08-08

I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S3, which has a 3.8V 7.98Wh battery, With the Sanyo Eneloops this product charges 60% of that battery in 2 hours, while it takes over 6 hours to charge my camcorder 3.7V 3.7Wh battery. This difference obviously has something to do with the internals of each device charging electronics. My camcorder can charge from my PC USB ports, but the S3 can't. The wall charger for the S3 is rated at 1A over USB cable. So it seems that different electronics will give you different results.

This product is a great idea but sadly the quality of this manufacturer's attempt is lacking.

First, the case is all plastic. The picture looks as though the silver strip might be metal but it isn't. This isn't necessarily all bad but the plastic they used feels very light weight and cheap. It is not solid feeling at all but rather is the kind of chintzy plastic feel you get with stuff that soon breaks from light use.

Second, and most importantly, it does not work with my Android phone. I purchased this for use specifically with one device and it just will not work with that device at all. I'm not sure exactly what is happening but it appears that there might be some type of communication trying to take place which goes wrong somehow and the power pack shuts off and stays off until power is cycled. If the output of the unit is shorted momentarily drawing excessive power it will shut down but then immediately recover as soon as the short is removed. I also measured the current used by my device and it is about 770mA which is well with in range. So the problem is not simply my device trying to draw too much power.

Third, it gets hot and shuts off even when not overloaded. I plugged another device in to the power pack and began to charge it. After a few minutes I noticed the LEDs on the power pack were out again. I switched it off and back on and it started working again but a short time later it did the same thing. I measured the current load of this device and it was around 750mA which again is well within spec. The unit was quite warm to the touch.

I first attempted to use the power pack with some NiMH cells but it seemed to keep shutting off from low battery when it was under load. I then used a set of fresh alkaline cells for all the tests above.

I would really like to find a quality implementation of this idea.

I really need one that works reliably.

Want Tekkeon MP1580 TEKCHARGE Mobile Power Pack and Battery Charger Discount?

I purchased from Amazon the previous version (Tekkeon 1500) some three years ago. Only difference is that my version can produce 800 mah, while Tekkeon 1580 can produce up to 1000 mah. In every other aspect they are identical.

I really love my Tekkeon, its the smartest way to have backup power. As it uses AA batteries, I can swap depleted Nimh batteries for new ones and keep charging USB devices, or I can recharge the batteries I just used from any USB port (from a computer or USB charger).

Tekkeon does what it was designed for but it has some flaws. They can still be found in the MP1580. For me they are minor as I found a solution, and I can still use it. They are:

Tekkeon sometimes shuts off some seconds after I plug my HTC smartphone

I suspect it occurs because the phone draws more power than what the Tekkeon and/or the batteries can withstand.

The solution: I leave the phone idle or even better turn it off so that the phone consumes less power. It will also charge faster and longer. For iphone/ipod users that say Tekkeon only charges 10%: try this method (turn the device off) I'm sure it will charge much more. Also, the phones will draw less power if they have 70% remaining than say, 30% or 10%.

After a few weeks in storage, the device didn't work the batteries were depleted.

As stated in other reviews, Tekkeon consumes a little power even when it is off and no usb device plugged in: With freshly charged eneloops and tekkeon set in the OFF position, after a few weeks (or months, I don't remember) the batteries were completely depleted (their voltage was so low that no smart charger could charge them).

The solution: Either remove the batteries when storing, or put some small paper or plastic between two of the batteries and Tekkeon, so they make no contact. When I un-store it and want to use, I remove the plastic.

And some other tips:

Tekkeon can charge the batteries, but it is a dumb charger: charges in pairs and it has a timer to stop the charge. Because of this, it is best to completely deplete the batteries before charging (batteries that are 3/4 full might get overcharged and shorten its capacity/number of cycles). Or better yet: charge the batteries in a smart charger.

It can provide power from, or charge 2 or 4 AA Nimh batteries, although I strongly recommend to always use it with 4 batteries at the same time, it not only gives you more charging capacity but its better for the batteries.

Also, there are other devices that have the same function and a few more uses, although they are more expensive. They are:

Goal0 11401 Guide 10 with 4 Goal Zero AA Batteries: Same functions, and:

has a led light that can run for 40 hours

can supply usb power while charging AAs (using it in this way will charge AAs way slower)

can charge the batteries faster by plugging it in to the Goal Zero 12301 Nomad 7M Solar Panel

It can only be used with 4 batteries at the same time

Duracell Mobile Charger With 2AA And 2AAA Pre Charged Rechargeable Nimh Batteries, CEF23DX4N same functions as the tekkeon, except it doesnt accept charging AAs from usb.

Can charge AAs from: 12v, 110v or 220v ideal while travelling by car, boat or abroad

Charges faster (as USB charging that the other devices use is limited to 500 mah)

can provide USB power while plugged to 12v, 110v or 220v (but it cant provide USB power and charge AAs at the same time).

It is a smart charger: charges the batteries independently (to their full capacity) and its better for the batteries.

It is way bigger than the Tekkeon or the Goal 10.

This unit uses 4 AA batteries, so you're not going to be using it to charge your iPad or Android tablet with it. You should get about 3-4 cell phone charges and maybe 2 iPod charges using NiCad/NIMH batteries. A couple of nice features about the unit: there is a mini-usb plug next to the standard plug that is used for charging the unit. So if you're already using a USB to mini-USB cable, you can recharge the batteries right in the unit by just reversing the cable and plugging it into a Desktop or Laptop's USB port. There is also a small LED on the back of the unit that shows when the pack is charging and when it is done.

If you combine this item with the Powerfilm Solar Charger, you could go off the grid completely for some of your power needs.

Brunton New SOLARIS i6 Foldable iPod Solar Charger

Brunton New SOLARIS i6 Foldable iPod Solar Charger
  • 6-watt solar panel charger designed for iPods and other electronics
  • Foldable CIGS solar panel with direct-connect iPod power cable
  • Vehicle outlet cable plugs into car's 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter
  • Links with other panels for increased power output; handy storage sack
  • Measures 29 by 9 inches and weighs 7.1 ounces; one-year warranty

First off, I live in Sacramento, CA. So it's not the sunniest location, but still pretty dang sunny.

I purchased the Solaris i6 with the intention to be able to charge any of the following: Ipod Video, Ipod Shuffle, Treo Smartphone, Garmin GPS, Bluetooth headset, & AA or AAA batteries. Usage would be mainly around the house, but I am an outdoor enthusiast that would disappear into backcountry whenever possible taking my trusty Ipod as my only real tie to civilization. Therefore, portability, simplicity & durability would be paramount for my outings.

At first tests, the Solaris was TECHNICALLY capable of charging everything EXCEPT the Ipod Video. The shuffle, phone, GPS & Bluetooth were fabulous no problems there. The AA & AAA batteries were close to impossible. Majority of chargers out there are just not able to work with the current that's created from these panels. I did find a charger that could, however the limit was a single battery at a time! If 2 batteries were placed in the charger, the lights would flicker a little -but charge. The SECOND a cloud, haze, or anything (possibly even a ladybug!) passed over the sun, the threshold was broken & the battery charger would flash "error." Unfortunately, the charger would either sit there flashing error (& no longer charging) until I came back later thinking my batteries are charged, or I would have to reset the charger by either removing the batteries & re-inserting (or unplugging & re-plugging the charger to the solar panels). So... technically, there probably is a charger out there that can work off of the current that the i6 produces, but in my experience -I'm as close to finding that charger as I am to finding a cure for Mad Cow Disease. So, expect the stated "3-4 hrs to charge 4 AA batteries" to actually read, "3-4 hrs PER AA battery." As for the Ipod... IMPOSSIBLE as well using the provided Ipod cable. I figured I had a defective Ipod cable -as the terminal contacts were too small for me to test with my voltage meter. Concluding so, I exchanged the Solaris for another one hoping that the Ipod issue would be resolved. Well, the problem was not resolved.

I can only conclude 1 of 2 conclusions, either: 1) I have terrible luck, & got 2 units with defective cables, or 2) the i6 is not capable of creating enough juice to charge the Ipod Video (at least in my 95 degrees, full-sun early September conditions here in Northern CA). I'm assuming scenario #2. That said, I think it's terrible to tout a product specifically for the Ipod -yet it can't deliver. As a manufacturer, I'd have tested the product against available generations of Ipods that use the connection that you are providing. There is no disclaimer (except that the lighting conditions may vary from our test type deal, etc.), so it really is disappointing. If you have a USB car adapter however, you can use this with the normal Ipod USB cable & the Brunton provided Female Cig adapter. This WILL charge the Ipod -but you now have to use 3 items vs. the 1 Brunton Ipod cable. For some this may be insignificant, but for me -this feels a little jacked-up when you consider the Ipod cable is about $10... which means some of my purchase price is completely wasted. Not to mention the fact that I now have to carry more bulk when outdoors.

So bottom-line, this product is capable of charging an Ipod -as well as a good majority of SMALL electronics. UN-intentional deception aside, I like the Solaris for what it is capable of delivering in such a portable package. I will however grade them hard, as I believe in delivering on a promise or claim.

On a side note, I am impressed with the Solaris line to the point that I am currently contemplating purchasing the 26 as well for larger electronics (digital SLR batteries & portable DVD players), for longer comfortable basecamps away from power.

One last point to consider... if you are purchasing these units SOLELY for emergency power (cell phones), you might want to consider the 12 or 26 watt Solaris instead. The 6 watts work beautifully under sunny conditions, & at about 25%-50% under light to moderate overcast conditions (but still enough to activate my phone charger). I would doubt though that enough current would be produced under heavier overcast (conditions typically associated with emergency situations) to initiate charging for most cell phones. For those of you thinking, "it's for situations like car trouble on a sunny day (not natural disasters)," let's face it, why would you need something as expensive as solar?... why not go with something like an extra battery... easier & cheaper to buy & carry. With a larger Solaris, there is a greater chance that the panels will collect enough energy to trigger your chargers, as a 10-15% output from the 26 would be most likely enough to activate charging. Just something to think about...

I really thought that this was exactly what I have been looking for...but it is not. If you are looking for a solar energy source for charging your iPod or newer cellular phone, look somewhere else. I own several Brunton products, and I've never had a problem with them before. Even though the specifications listed claim to be able to charge an iPod, it actually takes TWO or even THREE of these very expensive panels linked together to charge an iPod touch or iPhone. It took two Brunton i6 panels linked together to charge an iPod 3G nano, 80GB video iPod, and my Samsung Instinct even in direct sunlight. Although this item even lists "iPod" specifically in its name, I would have to recommend the Brunton 12-watt or even 26-watt solar panels to do the job. The i6 *may* have enough power to charge some of the much older iPods, such as the 1G and 2G nano, but I do not have any old iPods to test.

I use this to charge my iPhone. It works. It won't charge the battery while the phone is on but it seems maintain the level. I don't see this as an issue because I use this where there is no cell service, and no power I'm just using the phone as an iPod at this point. The sun is bright where I am in the west. Mine came without the storage sack and I emailed Brunton. They got back to me quickly and mailed me one. I give it four stars as the instruction book doesn't mention it working with an iPhone I just had to take a chance.

It does come with an array of cables: cigarette lighter socket, battery clamps, and various barrel connectors for charging other stuff. I haven't tried any of that at this point.

Also note that charging electronics in the hot sun is always tricky. One needs to shade or protect the device somehow so it doesn't get overheated while keeping the panel in the bright sunlight.

Want Brunton New SOLARIS i6 Foldable iPod Solar Charger Discount?

I bought this solar charger in the hopes that it would charge other usb devices in addition to my iPod. It doesn't charge the most important one, a Garmin Edge 305 cycling computer. In fact, it drains the battery rather than charging it. Further, Brunton's customer support on this issue was poor. The charger works fine with my 4th-generation iPod, but I'd rather not carry a separate charging system for every device, so I'm now looking for a better option for solar charging.

  • Voice Recognition

It's going to be a long review.

For starters, I've used in-car OEM GPS for the past 2 cars, and I've seen how they have evolved and technology has really improved over the years.

I really enjoy the GPS/bluetooth/audio integration (in my Honda Civic Hybrid) but since this is a hand held unit, I won't complain. Besides, it's fractions of the cost 1/10 of the OEM GPS Navigation units).

The screen size is just right. Even though I've enjoyed the OEM 7" GPS, but this one packs lots of information in the 4.3" very nicely. Even when you are driving at a location with 7 lanes, it highlights exactly which lane you should be driving. It is very updated (there's a location nearby my house finished construction 2 years ago but my new 2009 Civic didn't have an updated map of that Freeway interchange. But this one did. And it is a very confusing interchange, but this one executed the command and routing beautifully.

The speed in pulling up a destination is a bit slow when compared to my in-dash unit. And the GPS signal sensitivity is a bit low (since it has no external antenna. when I am in a car port or under a highway overpass too long, it may lose GPS signal.

The routing announcement is tooooo frequent. I guess if you are in a new area and are stressed out trying to find your destination, it's good to be constantly reminded. But if you are just driving around in an area you are fairly familiar with but just making a detour or need to make sure you are making the right turns, the announcements are too frequent. And there's no way to reduce it too. (You can only choose the types of command to on/off.)

No media player (good or bad? you decide. Some people want it, but I'd like it simple.)

It has great bluetooth/hand free phone integration. As soon as you start the engine, and if the charger is plugged in, the unit turns on and immediately links to your cell phone.

The call display is great too. Clearly displaying who is calling and not distracting your drive. The sound is loud enough and the mic is right at the front right hand corner to capture all of your voices. I don't know whether it has noise cancellation build in, so I don't know if the caller on the other side can hear me well or not.

The traffic update is great. I usually use my iPhone to check traffic condition before I drive home or go to work. With this, it tell me if there's traffic with advance voice warning and red lane indicator.

The screen can be a bit too sensitive when you are trying to enter destination info when driving. So I strongly recommend you stop completely to enter the destination before you even change gear to drive.

The command to turn is the only major complain I have. Many times you are already at the corner and the voice command prompt you to turn. So, do look at the screen if you know you need to turn soon, or it will be too late.

The battery doesn't last that long if you are not plugged in--only 2.5 hours.

The cradle attachment is very well designed and sticks to the windshield like spiderman would do. I wish it came with a pouch to store the GPS unit so you can carry it out side your car. It is another prime target for car break in to steal the GPS.

I tried connecting the GPS to my computer using the USB, but it doesn't do anything to check software update. I can not find any information on software/map update in the user manual or online at motorolla site. I don't know if they plan to support this unit with new firmware or new map updates, etc.

So that's what I could think of so far after one day of usage. I haven't used the call feature to Bing or other services. (It uses your phone via bluetooth to make a call to a 408 area code number to check on everything (weather, point of interest, stocks, etc.) So it's not a 3G or edge network subscription. The traffic update, however, doesn't require your phone.

For a fraction of the cost of an in-dash OEM GPS navigation unit, I'd strongly recommend getting this unit (the lifetime traffic update is a dream come true.)

For most cars, a factory installed bluetooth hand free integration is about $500. Why buy that when you can have a GPS and bluetooth hand free for under $300? Do your math.

To be fair, I've only used a Garmin unit once when I went out of town trip with a friend. So I borrowed a Garmin GPS (don't even remember the model number).

That unit was very nice too, very intuitive in usage. But this one, has much more features built-in and at a lower price.

The only thing missing now is a speed radar built-in. They could make a receiver unit in the cradle and the software in the GPS unit. So when driving it will you know if there's a police with a radar gun ahead. Oh btw, this one tells you if there's photo radar enforcement ahead too.

It really packs a lot of feature in there with a reasonable price tag.

Highly recommended buy.

***Update***

After using it for a week, I want to update additional worth mention features.

1. I've lowered it to 4 stars. Reason for dropping one star? The mix of the following reasons:

a. unable to add previous destinations to favorites; it only shows 10 previous destinations. no choice on selecting one of them and add it to favorite or contact list so you have a quick list.

b. the phone call to BING is a drag. It takes up the phone line to do data stuff like an old modem. I can't believe Motorolla would use this old technology on this device.

c. it's impossible to handle the unit without accidently hitting some buttons (volume + -, mute, etc.)

2. A good feature: I drove with this GPS unit on but without a destination entered. It is still doing it's job even without a destination: a. still warning you of any photo radar spots, b. still has active bluetooth sync to your phone. c. still shows traffic data; d. still shows your driving speed if you are over the speed limit.

Still a recommended buy.

Whats is in the box is a nice, sleek, apparently well made GPS, a window mount, a car charging cradle (that attaches to the window mount), a mini USB cable and a 12V power cable for the car. The quality of the mount is top notch with both up and down positioning and a pivoting head where the car charging cradle attaches. The GPS itself is heavy and has a substantial feel. It can be charged via the included computer USB cable or the automobile 12v accessory jack charger. However, if you want a 110 volt charger for the home, that is extra.

After charging the unit up and proceeding through the basic setup, which is very straight forward, I tested out the devices features. This is a feature rich GPS. Setting up the bluetooth and syncing my phones contacts was a snap (although the syncing part took several minutes). The voice prompts were clear and the voice recognition was both effective and convenient. I was able to retrieve contacts and dial them without ever touching the device. The sound quality of the speaker phone was good, but not great, for both sender and receiver. I didn't get a chance to really check out the noise canceling feature of the hands free operation, but more on that later. Finding gas prices and getting a stock quote was cool and easy. Just keep in mind that it needs a connection to your phone to do this. I was jazzed about this GPS and it's many capabilities. My mind was thinking of ways to make the most of its features. So I decided to take it for a real test drive, so to speak, and that is where the infatuation fell apart.

When I mounted the GPS on it's car charging cradle, it quit speaking and responding to voice commands. So I removed it from the cradle and it resumed listening and speaking. Tried it again with the same result. I unplugged the power, tried a reset, checked the settings...still wouldn't talk to or listen to me when it was in the charging cradle. Next, I visited the Motorola Motonav website and downloaded and installed the software required for updating the GPS. The software is easy to install and use and it informed me that there were three updates available for the device and it's maps. Thinking this would solve my problems, I updated the device (and made backups for the GPS a cool feature of the program). Yet, the issue persisted so I gave in to calling the Motonav support number. The helpful person on the other end sent me an RMA via email. Therein lies my issues with customer support. First, the RMA did not include a shipping label. I would need to pay for shipping a brand new item back for service. Second, I would need to send proof of purchase which was not included with this product because it was sent to me by Motorola to try out and review (with a very nice letter from the Motonav team I might add) via the Amazon Vine program. When I contacted customer service about the issue the response was simple, I pay to ship it back and they may or may not fix it since I do not have proof of purchase. In their words, "that will be up to the service department." Hmmm. I guess I'll be sticking to my Garmin. At least it still speaks to me and I won't have to deal with all of my rejection issues, but that is another story.

After spending some time with it, I'm finding the Motorola TN565T easy to operate, feature-rich and generally cool all around. The unit is rugged and obviously high quality with a legible 4.3" LCD screen, accurate touch screen and clear speakers. It runs about 2-3 hours on the internal rechargeable batteries, or it can be powered using a micro-USB adapter (included) in the car. The kit also includes a very rugged car mount and a USB cable for connecting the Motonav to your PC.

One of the unique features is that the unit can pair with a Bluetooth phone, enabling the GPS to access various information services such as live traffic, search (Google and Bing) and added services like stock quotes, weather, flight status, messaging and even up-to-the-minute fuel prices. You can also use the GPS as a "front end" to your phone, letting you place calls and so on directly from the GPS. For those of you having small, conventional (but Bluetooth-enabled) phones, this is a big plus while driving as you can use the big LCD screen on the GPS to work your phone, and it gives you hands-free capabilities. Being Bluetooth, there are no wires or anything.

If left on, the GPS will pair with your phone and periodically make calls to keep its information in sync. On a typical day, this seems to add up to about five minutes worth of airtime...not sure how I feel about that, given that I might be paying for the calls. Since I have wireless broadband and a data plan, I'd probably prefer if there was a way to use either an 802.11 or 3G connection, rather than dialing what to me are long distance calls to get this information.

The traffic information seems reliable, and it doesn't require an additional subscription (the unit in my car requires an XM subscription in order to receive traffic data). Still, I question how accurate it is, and coverage is far from universal. This isn't a gripe about the Motonav just seems to be the nature of the beast at this point in time. To its credit, the Motonav does support automatic redirection around congested areas, so if you drive into an area known to have traffic, the unit will automatically pick the least congested route for you.

The Motonav has a very good database of Points of Interest, making it easy to find many of the nearby locations I might want to search for. When entering destinations, it also supports voice navigation and direct entry using the touch screen. I found the voice navigation fairly good, so long as there's not a lot of ambient noise. The touch screen works fairly well since the screen itself is large, but of course, with lengthy searches, it can be annoying I much prefer the voice recognition. A nice touch is that once you find your destination, the phone number is shown right on the display.

At the moment, I happen to have access to four completely different GPS devices: the built-in unit in my car, the GPS that comes with my Droid phone (mostly based on Google Maps), a Garmin Nuvi and now the Motonav. This made it easy to compare the features and capabilities of each. One difference is the startup time. The unit in my car seems always ready and the Droid is nearly always-on as well. The Motonav, on the other hand, seems to take about a minute to acquire enough GPS satellites to be useful.

I'd have to say that the large display in my car was the most readable, but the Motonav isn't far behind. The Droid screen seems "sexier" somehow, but it's just small enough that I need to have it right in front of my face for it to be truly readable, where I can see the Motonav from several feet away. Accuracy seemed about the same across these three units. The Motonav offered better guidance in my opinion, warning me ahead of time for upcoming turns in a way that seemed to be more understandable. I also found the Motonav to be a bit more accurate in terms of ETA and other time calculations. Compared to the Garmin, I'd have to say that the Motonav is more up to date in terms of features thanks to it's more sophisticated software and Bluetooth connection.

I was surprised to see the screen compared to my Motorola Droid phone. My phone uses a very sleek and glossy mineral glass that I've come to really love. It's very vibrant and although small, displays a wonderful range of colors and high contrast images. By comparison, the Motonav screen isn't at all glossy, Motorola opting instead for a matte finish that probably works out to be a bit easier to read in direct sunlight. The images aren't nearly as impressive but I suppose they don't need to be...all the basics are there, and maps and so forth are certainly legible it just surprises me how different the technology is versus what Motorola is using in phones today. Not necessarily "worse", just "different".

Only thing I really find to complain about is the location of the buttons on the Motonav. If you use it handheld, it's hard to pick up the unit and not hit one of the buttons on the back of the unit. It's possible to lock out these buttons, but in the beginning, you'll probably be inadvertently adjusting the volume up or down quite a bit. Of course, mounted in the car, this isn't a problem.

Overall, I found the unit to be easy and intuitive to operate and to work about as well as anything else out there. If you need a GPS, this would be one of my top choices...definitely recommended.

Want Motorola Motonav TN565T 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator Discount?

I currently have an older generation and newer generation Garmin Nuvi, a Magellan Xplorist, an iPhone, and now the MotoNav TN565T. I also have a Whistler red light camera detector, similar in functionality to the built-in red-light camera database in the MotoNav.

What I Like about it:

-The interface, although very complicated-feeling at first, is very intuitive after you spend a few minutes playing around with it. The map fills the whole screen, unless you choose to bring up the left-side panel where you can view traffic information, see a list of nearby POI's, see a "dashboard" (speed, direction, altitude, etc.), or other useful information. Want to enter a destination? Just tap anywhere on the map, and it brings up a menu.

-It is fully customizable. You can change what the hardware buttons on the sides do, you can change the order of the menu buttons, and you can change the types of POIs that appear on the map, among other things.

-voice commands work very well. The unit has never had any trouble understanding what I say.

-Traffic information has been up-to-date and accurate in my experience. The unit can be set to re-route you automatically if the delay is longer than 5 minutes and a faster route is available. You can also set which types of traffic incidents to always avoid or ignore, such as construction, accidents, congestion, weather-related problems, etc.

-Even with all the customization this device is capable of, it still works great right out of the box. Motorola did a great job of catering to both the tech-savvy and the not-so-tech-savvy.

-Fast startup (startup for the first time takes a minute, but it's very quick each time after that)

-Faster than average GPS processor

-Traffic light camera warnings work just as well as my Whistler stand-alone unit, so I don't need to use the Whistler unit anymore. The service on the Motorola requires a subscription after 45 days, though, and the Whistler is free.

What I don't like about it:

-I wish the MotoExtras service utilized the cell phone's data plan instead of making a voice phone call to retrieve data similar to an old dial-up computer modem. It seems silly to me that I have to wait for the GPS to dial a number, listen to the "bleeps and bloops" on the other end, and then hang up, when my cell phone has an unlimited internet data package. As such, it only updates the MotoExtras information on-demand, so if you want gas prices in your area, you have to have the GPS dial out to the data center and download new information. If you drive 20 miles down the road, you have to tell it to dial out and get new information again. It would be nice if it was automated in any way.

-If you set your GPS to auto-sync information with your phone, you have to deal with a popup that covers the whole screen and says "auto-syncing, this may take a few minutes", which you have to press OK to close out of. Very annoying after a while! They should make it disappear after a couple seconds, like the "bluetooth connected" message that pops up when your phone connects to the GPS successfully.

-Bing VoiceSearch is really not as useful as they make it sound. It is not something that is integrated with the GPS; rather, it's more of a shortcut to dial Bing's "411" service. When you use Bing VoiceSearch to, for example, search for a business in your area, it just reads off the address and phone number to you. It does not send the address to the GPS, so unless you have a pencil and paper handy, it's virtually pointless. All in all, it is EXACTLY as useful as calling 411 from your cell phone.

-It would be nice if you could use voice commands to enter a destination. The 700 series allows you to do that, but not the 500 series. You can, however, use voice commands to dial contacts and other phone numbers.

-The buttons on the back are VERY easy to accidentally press when you're holding the GPS in your hands. Motorola does give you the option to turn them off, however. Also, there is a "lock" switch that allows you to carry the GPS in your pocket without pushing any buttons.

Some nice features but this GPS also has some very weak points.

1. The bluetooth and handsfree work better than my Garmins (Nuvi and Streetpilot) but it can not dial the number of your destination. The GPS is not "smart" enough to add a "1" prior to the area code. I called customer support and they agreed it was not fixable. No problem using the contacts on my phone since I already have a "1" as part of the number. When I tap on the number on the GPS, I get a recording that says "Your call can not be completed as dialed." FYI, I am a Verizon wireless customer.

2. I primarily bought this GPS for the traffic since the Garmin does a poor job of rerouting me. The Garmin will tell me to get off the freeway for one exit and get back on. It says 1 minute delay when it should say 20. It will re-route you for a minor time savings. It will take me off the freeway onto city streets and grossly mis-estimate the time. The Motorola GPS is a little better but also grossly misstates the arrival time in traffic. It will also describe a 30 minute delay as 1 minute.

3. What's up with the half inch black border around the screen? Garmin does not have it. This annoying border reduces the size of the display.

4. Motorola should have an option to diable the ads. They are not money saving coupons and I am not interested in Red Lobster's Festival of Shrimp.

5. Would rather have stock quotes as an option instead of weather. Why not both like Garmin has.

6. It is impossible to avoid hitting the side and top buttons accidentally. They are too big and sensitive.

7. I would like more language options besides English. I like the scary Halloween voice available on Garmin as well as the multiple icons (firetruck, airplance and hundreds of other choices).

8. It kept replaying a demo screen and I could not figure how to diable it. It eventually stopped by itself. Seems the unit automatically shows help for every function the first time you use it. After loading the updates from the Motorola web site, it reset itself and assumed it was a new unit and did a demo for every feature.

9. Does not show the street I am on when driving. It assumes I know and only shows me the names of the upcoming intersection.

10. Customer service on the phone was excellent. I called twice and got thru right away both times. Agents were friendly and helpful.

11. Icons on screen are hard to figure out. I looked at the manual and there is no legend.

12. Speed trap warning is excellent. It shows a surface street trap near my home very accurately. It is too expensive to renew subscription, however, after the free trial is over. Much better than Garmin.

13. I miss the recent destinations folder. Correction: I found it but it is in an unusual place.

14. I liked the Garmin Nuvi ability to lead you back to your car if you were in an outdoor parking lot. Correction: Its not mentioned in the manual but it does have a last location and when you disconnect the power, there is an option to switch to pedestrian mode.

15. Bing is worthless. There are too many menus to go thru and the voice recognition is awful. It is also talking and you have to wait until its finished or it gets confused when you try to shout instructions which is the only way to interupt it. Not a big deal because I will not pay to continue Bing once the free trial is over.

16. Entering destinations is 100 times better than Garmin. It is very easy to add a partial name and change the city. This one aspect of the Motonav makes me like it over Garmin.

17. Updating software and maps is ok except the first time I did it, the web site said there was not enough free space on the GPS. I hit every help button I could find and there were no instructions about what to do. I decided on my own to copy Canada onto my computer hard drive and this did the trick and I was able to update everything.

I have been using one of these for about 15-18 years, maybe longer. I have a car alarm hookedup to secure my garage. I keep this hooked to the battery that powers it. It is always on and works great. In that time I have only gone through 2 batterys, so it really increased battery life.

Charger was sent quickly and arrived on time in a well packed box. The unit replaces and older unit and works well. Thx

This unit was purchased to replace an identical unit that failed. The failed unit was used on an industrial lift cart, and appears to have failed due to metal chips from manufacturing processes getting into the case and causing a short on the circuit board. Even so, it had lasted over five years and had worked very well during that time. It is designed to be connected to the battery continuously and has circuitry to reduce the charging current when the battery is fully charged. It performs this function well. The manufacturer of the lift cart should have protected the charger more effectively from contaminants found in industrial settings. The unit is sturdy, reasonably priced, and has LEDs to show the charge status.
