Honeywell 1400-6067 1,400 Watt 80cc 4-Stroke OHV Portable Gas Powered Inverter Generator, CARB Compl

Honeywell 1400-6067 1,400 Watt 80cc 4-Stroke OHV Portable Gas Powered Inverter Generator, CARB CompliantI bought this generator as a quick backup alternative to my large 8Kw generator (which plugs into a transfer switch) for short-term blackouts or picnic/party use. It's not as quiet as a Honda (what is?) but the power output from the inverter is clean and the frequency is stable. The only negative is that the engine doesn't seem to run at a steady speed as it fluctuates a bit up and down (which doesn't affect the output waveform since it's the output from the inverter and not directly from the generator portion itself). Also, if you have it on the "eco" mode, it doesn't rev up quick enough when you put a sudden load on it, so my recommendation is to run it in "normal" full rpm mode if you're going to be running equipment that draws a good deal of power when it turns on, especially if it's a cycling device (such as a refrigerator, etc.)

As soon as the generator arrived I filled it with oil and gas so that I could test it. It started OK but that was the last good thing that happened. The engine surged up and down constantly and would never reach a constant running speed. It was so bad that I decided on the spot to return the unit for a refund. I did not realize it at the time but Amazon will not accept returns of an item that has had gas in it. I decided that I was just "stuck". About two weeks ago a tree came down in a storm and knocked out our power for three days. One day I used the generator to run our coffee pot and one night we used it to power the TV and DVD player so we could watch a movie. My wife even asked if there was something wrong with the unit as it surged up and down on RPM. On the third day when I tried to start it, it would run for about five seconds and then die. When it did die, fuel would run out of one of two tubes that stick out on the side of the unit. I tried for a long time to get it to run but it never started again. I actually wore the skin off of one of my fingers I made so many pulls of the starter cord. I would estimate that this thing as a total run time of between 3 and 4 hours and is now a boat anchor. This is a piece of JUNK and I would bite the bullet and go for a more expensive unit like the Honda eu2000i

We bought this generator because we were searching for one that wasn't overly loud, and was reasonably priced. The Hondas are quiet, but very pricey (over $1,000). The cheap generators ($200-$300) are very noisy. We tried out this generator during one week of "dry camping" with our RV to recharge the battery and run the water pump while we took our showers, etc. It worked well. It seems to be a good mid range generator it does what is supposed to and is not as loud as some of the cheap ones. It is not super quiet, but it is OK. We had one tent camping neighbor in the campground express concern, but we only had to run the generator for about an hour and a half in the afternoons which is allowed in most campgrounds.
