This radio does what you need not what you don't. The reception is good and sounds good. The calls I have placed were received "Loud and Clear". It is compact and comes with any accessory (rechargeable battery and two chargers, waterproof bag, bracket, clip) that you could want. It also runs on AA cells if your rechargeable runs down.

It does not have Digital Selective Calling which is not something I care about. It is not waterproof outside of its bag also not a concern to me the way I use it.

I am a 25 year boatowner and I think the radio is great.

It'll do all the VHF channels and weather...even has a weather alert. Ours runs all day on a charge and gets plugged in at night. One time we forgot to charge it and slapped the AA batteries in to keep us online. I love the call tones...lets our comrades know who is calling before they answer. Also like the 'lock' feature that prevents accidental setting changes.

For me, the negatives are:

1) It will receive, but not transmit while charging (we overcame this by simply using AA batteries when the rechargeable battery ran low).

2) The set up/menu system is not intuitive we had to keep the manual handy for a couple weeks.

Would I buy another one? In a heartbeat!

This was a great deal on a full 5 watt handheld VHF radio. Doesn't look so rugged, but for my use, it's great. Came with all the accessories to use in any situation. Only problem is that every once in a while, the channel gets stuck on 16 and I have to reset the radio. Unfortunately, it happens so rarely I can't usually remember the reset process. Again, the best price on a handheld you'll find.
