12 Volt Automatic Battery Float Charger

12 Volt Automatic Battery Float Charger
  • Maintain the charge of your 12-volt battery without overcharging
  • Automatic safety shutoff
  • Copper battery clamps

I have 3 of these and have worked well for many years. The oldest one I own is about 10 years old. Never had a dead battery on the harley. I recently purchased another one, that will be used on my diesel pickup with 2 batteries. Never had a issue with these floating chargers. I added some pictures what they look like packaged. I have used this on a gel cell battery and had no issues.

I have 4 of these and use them on boat, lawn tractor, and classic car batteries. Keeps the batteries full without overcharging. Never a dead battery which also extends their life. The price is right, although I got mine on special at Harbor Freight. Did have one go bad a few years ago, but at that price no big deal.

This small battery tender is just what i needed to keep on our lawn mowers and 4-wheeler. to keep the battery from dying.

The box states "for wet cell and gel cell batteries"but when I read the instructions in the box it stated"Do not use on gel cell batteries"Typical China crap

TecMate TM-141DUAL OptiMate 4DUAL 0.8Amp Weatherproof Desulfating Charger/Maintainer

  • 24/7 automatic storage control for standard
  • Early warning of battery problems
  • Ideal for weatherproof and cold applications
  • Optimizes battery power and life

This is a very good trickle charger for small batteries like a motorcycle. I can't really assess the claims made for highly sulfated batteries. Mine are in good shape. The only complaint I have are the instructions. I did not find them very clear. Also, an abbreviated version of them should appear on the unit itself. I find myself needing the manual each time I use the charger.

Charged one battery on my Triumph Rocket, no problem. The problem battery was on the Goldwing. This charger detected the sulfination issue and automatically delsulfinated it and charged it. I wish I had this product before I bought a new battery for the Wing. A quick desalination would have done the trick.

This is an amazing product. I connected the included adapter to my Ducati Monster S4R and I can just easily connect this charger to it whenever I need to keep the battery fresh (or just leave it on if you want).

I also use the included set of clamps to keep the battery healthy on my Husqvarna mower (Husqvarna YTH23V48-CA 48-Inch 724cc 23 HP Briggs & Stratton Intek V-Twin Pedal Activated Hydrostatic Transmission Riding Lawn Tractor (CARB Compliant) awesome mower also bought on Amazon).

It's better than other trickle chargers I've had because it even revives dying batteries and keeps them healthy.

Lisle 54150 Battery Terminal and Wiper Arm Puller

Lisle 54150 Battery Terminal and Wiper Arm Puller
  • This is a dual-purpose puller
  • Easily removes stuck battery terminals
  • Tighten knurled cone to force jaws under the cable clamp

Works well so far, but the cone shaped nut is made of plastic, not the shiny metal pictured in the ad. My experience has been that metal items far outlast plastic junk. For well over $20, there is absolutely no reason for plastic!

Used it to pull wiper arm on Honda Accord.

Pro.

1. Well contructed of solid material.

2. Reasonable price.

Con.

1. The device is too wide. Could not fit into the narrow space of the wiper arm. Had to modify by using a flat head screw driver with it.

Garmin Nuvi 1300, 1350, 1350T Car and Wall Charger

Garmin Nuvi 1300, 1350, 1350T Car and Wall Charger
  • Gives you the flexibility to charge your navigation unit at home or on vacation
  • Lightweight unit restores power to your navigation system
  • Safely charges the battery on your GPS while driving
  • IC Chip recognizes a full battery & automatically switches to saver modeing and overheating)

I bought this so I would have another car charger for my Garmin nuvi 1390. My Garmin gets its power from a standard USB Mini which both the car charger and wall AC charger provide.

When I plugged my Garmin into the car charger my Garmin nuvi 1390 thought it was connected to a computer at first. It then figured it out and came on. While that would be a little annoying it's not the real problem.

When I had my Garmin plugged into the car adapter it would run for a few minutes, then it would go off, then come back on for a few minutes, then go off, then come back on ... Anyway you get the picture.

I haven't decided if I'm going to try to return. The shipping cost more than the item did.

I wish I could give it no stars.

Got what I expected for a good price. When it arrived, I was surprised how light the package was and wondered about the quality. However it all has worked flawlessly. The AC charger is very handy to charge it up before a trip, or for a walking trip. The car charger is a back-up. You should be aware that when you use it, you loose the traffic feedback for the NUVI 1350 since the FM receiver is integrated into the original car charger and it is not included in the one that comes with this package. But the price is right!

On the plus side, product was received in a very timely manner, and was exaclty as pictured.

Unfortunately, these are NOT Garmin chargers. These are USB chargers. When used with the Garmin Nuvi, all they do is cause the Nuvi to cycle through the computer syncing mode over and over. The battery does not charge, and you cannot use the Nuvi to navigate.

I have contacted the seller but have not heard back from them. If you have a USB phone or other device that does charge using a USB port delivering USB voltage, then these items will have other uses around your home.

But if, like me, you wanted to be able to charge and program your Nuvi at home, and have a spare 12V cord for a second vehicle, DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM.

I gave my dad the Garmin GPS as a gift and threw this in as almost an afterthought when it popped up on Amazon as one of the "Items most often purchased" list. I thought, for such a cheap price, what's to loose? I guess in this case there was little to gain, because these apparently worked for a while but the home plug in has long since stopped working. I guess that is the gamble you make in buying cheaper, off brand products. I have done it in the past with chargers for cell phones with a lot of success, so maybe this particular type is bad, or I just got the unlucky bad apple. Buy with few hopes!

This power supply did not work to charge our Garmin nuvi 1350T GPS at 120V.

The 12 V was not tried

Uniden GMR1235-2 12-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair)

Uniden GMR1235-2 12-Mile 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio
  • Pair of FRS/GMRS family radios with 22 channels (15 GMRS, 7 FRS) and up to 12 mile range
  • Auto-squelch for reducing interference; channel scan/monitor for easily finding available channels
  • Power with three AAA batteries--automatic power saving feature extends battery life
  • Call tone and selectable roger beep; keypad lock feature to avoid changing settings
  • Bundle includes two radios, batteries, reference guide, and pair of belt clips

Those Uniden GMR1235-2 2-way Radios are so compact, you can easily hold both in one hand (see my Customer Image). They are also very inexpensive (around $20 for a pair), so one may think of them as just toys for kids, But in fact they can be used by kids and adults alike provided that you start with the correct expectation.

First of all, forget about the manufacturer's claim of '12-mile' range. That is only possible under the most optimistic test condition (transmitting from one hill top to another with clear line-of-sight). In an urban environment, you are lucky if you can get one or two miles. With this limited range in mind, this walkie talkie set can still be very useful in many places (such as in a National Park, or a large shopping mall). The sound quality is quite decent similar to an AM radio.

Next, this thing is a battery-eater if you use disposable alkaline cells (three AAA per radio). The manufacturer claims an average battery life of '20 hours'. But again, this is under a special test condition of '5/5/90', which means 5% transmit, 5% receive, and 90% idle time. The device consumes different amount of current during different operation modes, as shown below:

While transmitting: 400mA

While receiving: 50-100mA (depending on volume level)

While idling: around 15mA.

If you do a lot of transmission, a set of alkaline cells is likely to run flat in less than two hours (because alkaline cells are very inefficient at high current). My advice is to buy some good quality AAA rechargeable cells, such as the Sanyo Eneloop or Rayovac Hybrid, to power those radios. That way, not only will you save money on batteries, you can even get longer run time per charge.

[Update on June 8, 2011]

I should add that this pair of walkie-talkie is still working well after 2.5 years, and I'm still using the same set of rechargeable batteries (Kodak Pre-Charged AAA) in them.

I bought a pair to see how they would work for a local communications net and they were great! Sure, they lack a lot of the fancy bells and whistles but they have range and clarity that some of the other hand-held radios in the net lacked. Some of the other members were so impressed, they wanted to know where they could get some. I'm buying some more now before these babies sell out, again!

Good, basic communication option. Fairly long range, easy to use, batteries included, and good price. What's not to love?

Bought these as knock around radios for the kids so they didn't need to play with my nicer Motorola talkabouts. For the price these are excellent radios. They have been tested out to just under 1 mile over water (opposite sides of the local lake). The included batteries are kind of like the inkjet cartridges you get with your printer... just enough juice for you to test the product, but not enough for real work. Don't head into the field on the included batteries! A buddy and I hiked into a high mountain lake to fly fish with these radios and they were great for us to brag "fish on" when we were too far apart to see each other. At $10 each they were a guilt free purchase, even knowing they won't see daily use. Very happy with the quality and performance at this price point.

The battery life is terrible. If you read nothing else in this review, know that. But first:

Upon opening, the first thing you'll realize is that no matter how small you think they are, they are even smaller. They measure about 3 inches tall. Maybe 4.5 with the antenna. They are quite easy to grip though, and look and feel rugged enough to live through a few drops without an issue.

The sound quality in close proximity is great. Anything under 100 yards is very clear, even if you are going through brick walls and steel doors. I can hear my roommate just fine through 3 highrise apartment complexes. At distance, however, the quality breaks down quickly. No one expects 12 miles from a 2-way labeled as 12 mile capable, but 3 miles? 2 miles? Not likely unfortunately. If you get 1.5 residential area you should be thrilled.

The design seems rather straighforward, (volume up and down, channel up and down, power, scan, lock, squelch)The onlything I find odd is the placement of the belt clip. You need to remove it before you remove the battery cover. Makes replacing the battery a little more of a chore since the clip doesn't come off very easily.

Finally the battery life. This comes with 3 batteries for each radio. In the first use, our batteries lasted 4 hours. Now keep in mind, this was not constant communication. This was 90% standbye time. The manual says that after 2 minutes of non-use, the radios will switch to a power-save mode. That seems a little long to wait. They're fine for very casual use, but in any type of emergency situation I wouldn't be able to trust them. It's unfortunate, but I'm going to have to purchase my third set of walkie talkies simply because of the batteries.

Overall, it does fine for the cheap price. I didn't expect to much, but I'd look elswhere for a rechargeable unit if you need to rely on communication for anything critical.

I purchased the cover for my sweet Sporty 1200 and received it in about a week and half. Took it out of the box and threw it on.. what a fit, perfect. It pretty much encloses the entire bike with small bungee's to cross under to secure to another eyelet. It has a soft material on the inside of the cover where it would go over a windshield if you had one which I do. I am very pleased with the purchase not to mention the cost... Good purchase in my book.

As other reviewers have pointed out, it does seem fairly thin, but that's the downside to packing into such a small package, and being so light. I wouldn't use it for offseason storage outside, but for covering the bike while parked downtown, or to keep the dust off while in my garage, it's perfect.

I bought this, and thought I called the MFGer to make sure it was for ALL lead acid batteries. Which I know I read somewhere. But it is only for AGM lead acid. I guess that 1/2 of one volt charging can be a problem in certain temperature ranges. Battery minder is one the most respected in the "body of literature" on the internet, but their products are a bit complicated. I still may keep it, as it starts the charging cycle at 1 volt and ramps up as it charges. The other charger I am considering starts out at 3 volts then ramps up. Does any one else have this AGM charger and some advice? Should I really worry about using this with traditional flooded lead acid? Am I going to start a fire? Blow up acid into my face?

I have been pleasantly surprised by the effectiveness of this charger. It charged a 200 AH 12 volt AGM battery from 66% to 100% in about 7 hours. Being accustomed to the analog meter on some of my older chargers, I thought these blinking lights were more or less for entertainment. Its true test will be if it can restore the Odyssey PC625 SLA battery from the brink of death, it has been discharged down to 9.3 volts while under load of a circulating pump. After about 40 hours of charging it is at 66%. I gave it a (4).

Love it, love it,Love it!!! Costs a bit but it is worth it. :-) Keeps your battery charged and ready.

This is another of VDC Electronics' specialized battery minders. This one is specifically for AGM batteries like the Optima that I installed in my A33 Nissan Maxima. It comes with complete connection hardware and a printed instruction book. The unit can sense and display state of charge, as well as whether the battery is weak or badly discharged. These units, unlike the standard Battery Minder, can slow charge a badly discharged battery and then shift to a faster charge that allows de-sulfation. All in all, I have had extremely good service from VDC Electronics' products and highly recommend their Battery Minders.

Roadpro RPPI-500W 500/1000 Watt DC to AC Power Inverter

Roadpro RPPI-500W 500/1000 Watt DC to AC Power Inverter
  • Provides 500 watt continuous power, 1000 watt peak household alternating current power, direct to battery hook-up
  • Low battery alarm with thermal and overload protection
  • Operates home or office products from your truck, recreational vehicle, vehicle, boat and tailgating
  • Includes power cable with heavy duty battery terminal clips to connect directly to your battery
  • Perfect for recreation or emergency use

I'm not sure what the other two got but I'm 99% sure its just user error...

This thing is intended to power 125w through a cigarette outlet (you need your own cable).

Or, 500w Continuously when connected directly to the car battery and... wait for it... THE CAR IS ON!

If the car is not on and you draw 500w your car battery's voltage will temporarily drop below the minimum this inverter will allow (thus the fault light lights up, it beeps and stops inverting). Its a fail-safe to keep your battery from being discharged too far. Simply turning off the inverter will reset it but ideally you will learn to then turn the car on...

Now should something change, you bet I'll be back here to report it.

Goodluck with whatever you buy.

Looks OK but its plastic, i hooked it up and plugged in my Android phone to the usb port, it worked for about 5 seconds and the red light on the usb port went out, i unplugged the phone and apparently the 5 volts no longer works, the 12 volt outlet still works, I'm very unhappy with this, it was a pain to take off my gas tank and run the wires and if i send it back i will have to do this all over again, i simply don't have the time to do all this, if i could get the manufacturer to just send me a new head piece with the socket i could just splice the wires into the harness.

I don't see that happening so i rate it one star.

buyer beware

BTW,the wiring is done correctly, a 6 year old could wire this thing together, i just go a bad product.

The unit itself is cheaply made from low quality plastic and low quality internal unit wiring. If it did fully work, I would give it 4 stars for the value, but in this case the overall low price is reflected in the unit's compromised quality

Instapark® NEW All Black 10W Mono-crystalline Solar Panel with 12V Solar Charge Controller

Instapark® NEW All Black 10W Mono-crystalline Solar Panel with 12V Solar Charge ControllerThe panel looks great and is very solid, but it stopped charging within 30 days. I started testing with the battery and backed up to the PV panel from there. After checking every connection, I found the solders that connect the solar panel to the metal tabs (under the little cover) had solders that had broken away. They looked like a kid dropped it on there with an eye dropper and once I had begun removing the old solder, there was clearly no flux and there was even plastic and glue between the bridging tab (with the screw in it) and the panel output tab (that comes out of the case.) The other side of the tab, the wire side, looked like someone smeared the solder on there with toilet paper. I took my time and removed and replaced each solder (4) on that board and re-soldered the 2 tabs and 2 wires. I hot glued over all to keep moisture out and the panel made 20VDC at the line output where it would go into the charge controller. Once I had hooked it back up to the controller and the battery, I tested the voltage...20.2 then 0 then 20.4 then 0...it blinked with the blinking 'charge' light on the controller. I was using it with a gate opener that had an integrated controller and I switched over to that one. It now works like a charm. So, keep the panel, ditch the controller and check the solders before installing. This took 3 hours of my time to unmount, repair, mount, diagnose, disconnect and re-hook the controller. I'm glad I know what I'm doing or I would have sent it all back.

Maybe consider a different panel, definitely GET a different charge controller. Hope this helped!

The Instaspark 10 watt solar panel was purchased to supply 12 volt charging to a battery in an apollo 7000 sliding gate opener. It was easy to install and started working immediately. The 16 foot gate is opened and closed around 8-10 times a day and is working flawlessly after one month.

I purchased this to keep a car battery charged so I could run an electric chicken coop door off of it. It set up easily to the battery and worked perfectly right off the bat! I also have a Black & Decker power inverter attached to the battery to plug the motor of the door opener in to. The set up works great for an area with no outlets nearby. Side note.... I put all the parts in a 5 gallon bucket (vent holes drilled into the sides) with a lid. Well, I walked off without putting the lid on one day and the 20% chance of rain turned into over 4 inches that afternoon. Once I could get out there again, the bucket was completely full of water with all parts of this (except the solar panel) completely submerged. Everything had been submerged for HOURS. I took everything apart, let it all dry, reattached wires after brushing off all the rusty dust and it worked!!! The only thing I lost from the entire set up was the digital timer and the power inverter. So, not only does it work, it can survive after being under water for more than 12 hours.

Nice unit with a good quality feel. Much better quality than I expected; not the usual junk you would expect to find at this price.

I've used at 120Volts and and 12Volts in the car. Works perfectly in both conditions. It also comes with a Euro adaptor, which I will probably never use.

I couldn't be happier!

Product works just fine, in that it charges my batteries, which it is supposed to do. I'll be honest, I have not tried the car adapter, and what with not being in the EU, I have not tried that one either. The only thing is that the wall adapter goes from a totally normal orange-ish light to kind of freaking out and flickering frantically back and forth between green and orange once the battery is charged. But maybe that's just something about my battery. Anyway, that indicates it's charged, and it works fine, so it's all good. (I'd probably give it four and a half stars if I could, because the flickering's a little weird, but since it doesn't affect its functionality, I'll go with five.)

At first, the red light charging indicator did not work in my car even though battery was getting charged. I thought the problem was with the indicator. But when powered on wall socket, the red light appeared. Then after subsequent uses, it started working properly in the car too. Could have given 4.5 but now that I don't have any problems with it, I will give a 5.

BatteryChem 0610786-995 Battery Rejuvenator

BatteryChem 0610786-995 Battery Rejuvenator
  • Replaces buying a new battery every few years
  • User instructions on package
  • Sold individually
  • Tested for 25 years

I used these packets on my 48v golf cart. It has six 8v batteries so I bought 4 packs to give me the 4x6 = 24 packets that I needed for the job. In all honesty, I didn't have the equipment to test the batteries first like the instructions say (hydrometer, etc.). I simply dumped a pack in each cell of each battery and capped them back up. Done. My batteries all measured within about 0.1 volts of one another so I already believed the batteries were in good enough shape to rejuvenate. I figured 4 packs (of six packets) of this cost less than even a single battery so I didn't have much to lose to try this. Long story short: it appears to have worked. My batteries were lasting maybe 50% as long as they did when I first got them and after the treatment, I'd say they're back to at least 80%... and I would say that's a conservative estimate: maybe even better than 80%. How long it will last, I don't know but for now, I'm happy with this product. I took only one star off because, while the batteries do last almost as long as they did new, it didn't restore the original amount of "torque". In other words, I think this stuff restores the battery's capacity but not necessarily the max "instantaneous" amperage that they delivered when new. So it's like having almost-new batteries but maybe ones with slightly lower CCA (cold cranking amps).

I was reading the reviews of these other people saying that this stuff is total garbage and was very surprised. I bought this in hopes of restoring some life back into my Toyota Tacoma's Interstate Battery. I bought the battery new like 10 years ago and over the last 2 years it started dying. More and more sluggish starts, wouldn't start at all on freezing cold winter mornings, it got to where i would leave a charger on it overnight and that would keep it charged for like 2-3 days before slowly starting to get sluggish on starts again. As Interstate batteries are extremely expensive (yes i know i got 8 good years out of it) but the fact that it still showed some life to it i thought i'd give this stuff a try. Obviously by the fact i left 5 stars for this product you can tell i had surprisingly good results from this. I did like the directions stated by putting 1 small pouch (this comes with 6 pouches, 1 for each cell) in each of the 6 cells and then topped off each cell to the appropriate level with distilled water and put the battery charger on the battery for like 24 hours. Well folks my battery is doing unbelievably great, i bought this product from Amazon on December 11, 2011 and my truck still hasn't needed to be put back on the charger since. The starts are fast and crisp, EVEN on cold freezing mornings. This tells me that my batteries cells weren't dead but just corroded with crud that just builds up on the cells over time, but this stuff dissolves that corrosion on cells restoring life back into the cells. Now don't get me wrong i'm quite sure this isn't going to fix a completely toasted battery but if your battery was like mine nearing the end of it's life then this is the stuff for you. I can only speak from my own experience that's why i'm saying that i don't think it will help batteries that are completely dead, just ones that are starting to to die.

It's a completely useless product contrary to the claim that the vendor made about it.

I would strongly suggest people not wasting their money on it.

I ordered and tried this product. I simply did nothing claimed. It was a total wasted of my money and time. It's very likely my battery was a total failure and NOTHING could restore it. But this simply did nothing except make a more expensive dead battery. That was my experience. I don't recommend this product because it's too close to voodoo science for my taste. I could be completely off base here, so take this review with a grain of aspirin. Or salt.

Powerline By Original Power 0900-78 140/200-Watt Pivoting Inverter with USB Charging Port

Powerline By Original Power 0900-78 140/200-Watt Pivoting Inverter with USB Charging PortI purchased this item at Wal-mart while on a business trip. I left my charger for my GPS at home and the GPS uses a mini-usb charging port. It worked perfectly for the GPS which draws a very small amount of power. I then used it with my laptop which uses a 70 watt adapter, well below the rated 140 watts. The unit fried in less than an hour. It burned out two fuses in my car. I foolishly tried it in a second cigarette outlet after it blew the fuse in the first one.

The unit smelled of burned electrical circuitry. I thought that perhaps I just got a defective unit until I read a review on Amazon about another Powerline brand inverter where the customer had the same experience with two units.

The unit is very compact and light. It easily fits into my computer bag and is 1/3 or less the weight of the typical converter. In that respect the unit is perfect but don't expect it to last long running a laptop. If they make it more durable for a laptop or any device pulling over 50 watts, this would be a great item.

I bought it from Walmart. I was playing music in my car for about 2 hours with the engine off. I then decided to plug the inverter into the cigarette lighter to charge my iPhone. When I connected the iPhone via the USB port, I could smell the unit burning and it blew the 20 amp fuse for the cigarette lighter/radio.

A few days later I opened the unit and I could see some type of white frothing that looked like whip cream but it was hard. I could not tell if this occured when the unit was frying since the smell was gone. The unit has a 25 amp fuse which was still intact which explains why the current by passed it and blew my car's 20 amp cigarette lighter fuse.

I think the amps on this should be less than that of cigarette lighters so that the unit should burn out first. I am no electrician but I believe this could start a fire starting at the unit.

I got this mostly to replace my original wall charger, which I somehow misplaced while staying at a friend's even though I try to keep track of it well. I found the car charger quite useful too, since my Blackberry generally is lucky to carry a charge over 1 day even though I've replaced the battery several times and I do charge it each night. I like the option to charge it quick if I am out and want to make a call but find my phone is low, so I can keep the wall charger at home.

Neither are fancy, but get the job done. I can't complain with how cheap they were.

Black & Decker BCS10B 10 Amp Simple Battery Charger

Black & Decker BCS10B 10 Amp Simple Battery Charger
  • Features a simple selector dial for easy operation which allows dialing into a function and letting the charger do the rest
  • Offers fully automatic process that charges up to fifty percent faster than other conventional chargers
  • Consists of reverse polarity alarm which warns against improper connections to battery
  • Contains a LCD screen that displays the battery voltage, charge rate and battery diagnostics
  • Alternator check provides alternator diagnostics

This Black and Decker Car Battery Charger impressed me. Years ago,,I was an auto shop teacher and I was NIASE national repair mechanic certified. Right to the point, this unit used the latest SMART TECHNOLOGY to automatically and safely charge a car battery. A car had the key on start for several hours, the engine would not turn over and the lights were dim. After hook up, the charger gave readouts as to the increasing batter voltage, when fully charged, it indicated so. It also indicated the per cent of charge as it increased. Reassuring. It also can indicate alternator condition and can do a quick start. Note that with jumper cables I could have started the vehicle but would have had to drive the vehicle for some time to recharge the battery. Very important to know is that it will NOT charge a dead battery think,,, a dead battery is truly deceased, and can not be brought back to life. But this charger might get you a start so that you can go to your auto parts chain store and get a replacement battery installed free. I also have the "auto shut off" Black and Decker tire inflator, and it still works flawlessly. I really believe the Black and Decker car battery charger is a gem worth having in the garage, and recommend any of them in this 37 dollar price range or above. I do keep a set of jumper cables in the work truck. FINALLY, wear safety glasses, please, when connecting or any other mechanics play with car batteries. Over the years, I have seen accidents and near injury from novices or not paying careful attention. BUY IT !

I bought this item for my small John Deere tractor and it never really worked well. I was always having to fiddle with the connections to get it to stay on charging as it would say battery full and yet it had only been charging for a few minutes and the battery wouldn't turn over. With enough fiddling I was always able to charge and restart my tractor. I should have returned it, but, as many can attest, sometimes you just don't get around to it.

More recently, the charger would flip from charging to "service the battery", but the battery wasn't very old so I knew that wasn't correct. I went to my local hardware store and bought another make, and it works like a charm. I will update when I get back in town with the model that I did buy and am now happy with, but this is the 2nd Black and Decker product I have had to return (the other was a battery operate weed wacker and blower kit Black & Decker LCC220 20-Volt Max Trimmer and Sweeper Combo Kit). I am not impressed with the Black and Decker brand/products...

TomTom Rider 2 GPS Navigator for Motorcycles and Scooters

TomTom Rider 2 GPS Navigator for Motorcycles and Scooters
  • Tomtom Rider Is One Of The Smartest Navigation Solutions For Motorcycles.
  • Rugged Waterproof Device
  • Anti-Glare Screen
  • Integrated Sun Visor, And Gloves-On Operation
  • Navigation Instructions Are Spoken Via In-Helmet Cardo Scala-Rider

I received this unit for Christmas primarily for my bike, but once I purchase the car mount adapter it will be used in the car as well.

This is an excellent unit, to say the least. One reviewer mentioned that it's too difficult to turn the unit onI say "hogwash". The pushbutton is stiff, yes, but that's done to keep the unit from turning on accidentally while in your jacket pocket or carry bag (and with a touch screen, you can well imagine how much mischief one could accidentally create if it turned on without your knowledge). Ditto with the Scala Rider headsetyou don't want the thing accidentally turning on, running the battery down, do you?

Another reviewer mentioned that it doesn't have a "speedometer" or trip meter functionit most certainly does have a speedometer, and what I assume is the "trip meter"but since TomTom set the unit from the factory to eliminate as much extraneous information as possible, you have to activate it in the menus. Once that has been activated, it'll be there until you turn that feature off. In fact, there are a great number of features you can turn on and off in the menus.

I found the documentation to be adequate, and to the point. The printed documentation is to get you up to speed until you charge the units and turn them onit's easy sailing after that. The unit is very easy to use, and it has tutorials right on the unit, so in my opinion further paper documentation is rather redundantactually, I think it's pretty smart on TomTom's part to include tutorials on the unit itself rather than supply a printed bookthat way I don't have to carry around the book, as all of the information is already on the unit! They really don't say much about the bike power cable, but I can certainly understand whyit's not possible to provide information about every bike out there, and if you aren't familiar enough with your bike, or can't figure out how to install it, it's probably best to get someone who is (like your bike dealer) to do the installation.

I've got a Motorolla Razr phone, and the TomTom easily hooked up to my phone via Bluetooth, and it painlessly downloaded all of my phone numbers I have stored on the phone (thank you for providing this helpful feature!).

I do wish that it gave the street name when it gives you instructions to turn, but I soon got used to how it worksnot only does the display give you very clear instructions on where to turn, it also gives you the street name. Once you get used to it, it's easy. But I would like the option of hearing the street name (my PDA does, but the map display isn't as easy to see as the TomTom). While playing with the unit as my father-in-law drove the car, I discovered one potential issue with having the street name spoken to youwhat happens when the street name is changed, but your maps haven't been updated? If you rely on the spoken street name, you might miss itit's best to take a glance at the screen to make sure you're taking the correct turn (I found one such roadthe name has recently been changed, but the map showed the old name instead). Still, I'd prefer to have it spoken, and visually double-check the map.

Overall, I give the TomTom an A-. TomTom, if you're reading this, I'll give you an A+ if you guys update the software so that it'll give you the street name by voicethen you'll have the best bike GPS available! However, I'd still buy the unit as is. It would just increase the functionality by including this feature.

Buy TomTom Rider 2 GPS Navigator for Motorcycles and Scooters Now

My wife gave me this unit for Christmas. She's a doll and I love her very much, but she was not very versed about what to shop for or expect from a GPS unit. I've now used the unit several hours during trips, utilizing the blue tooth connectivity with my cell phone and the included headset within my helmet. Ive also used it in the car a lot. They said this unit was designed by motorcyclists, but obviously the bikers TomTom consulted knew very little about the minimum expectations for features required in a decent GPS unit...especially one costing this much.

I am going to break-down my review into two parts....what it has that is good...and what it lacks that makes it a non-competitive GPS unit in the US. I've used GPS technology at work and at play for years. Most of my background with consumer-grade GPS units is with the Garmin brand. So it is to that brand that I will make most of my comparisons because Garmin, for the most part, has it right and does it right! (imho)I have no financial or personal relationship with Garmin, whatsoever.

OK..first for the positive...it's water resistant/proof (don't really know about the proof part cause I havent had it in the pouring rain yet)...Fast processor and fast acquisition of the GPS constellation...good screen graphics and brightness...decent battery life...sensitive touch screen technology....blue tooth capable...can download your Outlook contact database....decent internal memory...heavy duty Ram mounting hardware for your bikes handle bars....USB connectivity to your computer for map downloads, etc....and if you are into directions from the unit, it has a few male and female voices from which to choose.

Now for the features it should have but does not:

-Should have a trip computer with trip parameters such as max speed, average moving speed, time moving, time sitting still, odometer, trip odometer, vertical and horizontal elevation, etc. None of this exists on the tomtom rider.

-Should leave a track, or a bread crumb trail, as you ride along. Not available on the TTRider. This is a real disappointment.

-Should have larger fonts for speed, arrival time, etc. Way too small to have to deal with on a motorcycle...even when set to the largest font.

-Should not "snap" to the nearest road to fool you into thinking their base map is accurate...because it is not that accurate in reality.

-Should come with a cig lighter plug for powering, but it does not.

-Does not allow any preference setting while in motion. You must stop before you can do anything with this unit outside of a few limited functions. Excuse: a safety feature

-Cannot make a call while moving. You can only recieve calls while moving. What's that about???? (yea I know, safety)

Has annoying icons on the screen when the phone and headset are not connected and there is no way to get them off the screen!!

-Gives you no options as far as screen orientation relating to your travel direction...always points you up. Thats ok most of the time, but we deserve to have a choice in this price class.

-Can fall off the ball mount and, if not tethered to the bike or mounting base, it will hit the ground and will be lost.

No elevation available...for those of us that ride in mountains and are use to seeing this on gps units, it's certainly an oversight by the TTRider. GPS derived elevation is not that accurate in the first place, but readings are relative and give a pretty good indication of elevation changes as you ride.

Direct sunlight makes the screen totally INVISIBLE.

If I could send it back to Amazon I would. I plan to give it to by wife for her car and purchase a gps unit that more closely fits my needs as a touring motorcyclist and as a consumer that refuses to settle for inadequate and poorly designed products.

1. I have owned a Rider for more than 18 months.

2. The first one I had, the dock broke in Texas while I was riding Route 66.

3. I called TomTom from Texas (I live in Calif) and asked them to FedEx a new one.

They said no can do.

4. Once home, TomTom sent me a new Dock, but... it took them 1 month to get it to me.

5. After a while I started to notice that the Rider was not charging while in the dock and on my bike.

6. They asked me to send them my Rider back with all the accessories.

7. Then after 4 weeks, they sent me a new Rider, with no charger and no accessories.

8. The asked me to send it back.

8. After another 4 weeks, they sent me another.... new Rider... with all the accessories.

9. The dock didn't charge.

10. After another week, they sent me a new dock. It works.

There are known issues with the docks and charging, but TomTom won't admit it.

It's manufacturering issue. I'll let you guess where they are made.

The Tom Tom rider is good, easy to use. But if anything goes wrong, you'll be waiting many weeks for a replacement.

Ad of course the wait time on the phone, plan on an hour with each call.

I probably would NOT buy another one.

Want TomTom Rider 2 GPS Navigator for Motorcycles and Scooters Discount?

I bought this product from Amazon and received it 4-days ago. In the last 4-days, I have been in contact with TomTom by phone and email trying not only to get detailed information about the product, but also trying to get help with it. This is by far the worst motorcycle GPS on the market.

The Pro's: (there is only one)

1) They have upgraded the headset to the Cardo Scala Q2.

The Con's:

1) The screen is unreadable outside either in the sunlight or on overcast days. It looks completely white washed. There are no settings to resolve this on the unit.

2) The documentation included is for the original Rider, not the Rider 2nd Edition.

3) The screen is unreadable outside

4) There is no documentation available from TomTom or from RAM-Mount for the motorcycle mount that is included.

5) The screen is unreadable outside

6) TomTom's 30-day map guarantee only works if you call and harass them about it. Then you must fax or email proof of purchase before they will comply with there own guarantee.

7) The screen is unreadable outside

8) The power button is ridiculously hard to operate

9) The screen is unreadable outside

10) THE SCREEN IS UNREADABLE OUTSIDE!!!!!!!

So, in my opinion I can only believe that people who rate this highly either ride only at dusk, or during the nighttime. Either that, or they want everyone to make the same mistake they did, so they don't feel like they are the only one's that were taken for their money.

Oh, and did you get it yet?

THE SCREEN IS UNREADABLE OUTSIDE!

The whole purpose of the unit is to use it outside on a motorcycle!

I have owned a TomTom GO910 for a few years, and was actually very pleased with it except for the cost. But I will NEVER purchase another TomTom device after dealing with the company over the last 4-days.

My recommendations would be to please do your research online in advance. The TomTom Rider and the TomTom Rider 2nd Edition are pure crap, because there SCREENS ARE NOT READABLE OUTSIDE! Which itself is ridiculous as they were specifically designed for motorcycles!

Do yourself a huge favor, buy the Garmin Nuvi 550 instead! It's waterproof with an 8-hour rechargeable and replaceable lithium battery! Plus, its only half the price of the all too overpriced Zumo model! Wanna save even more money, buy the Garmin Nuvi 500. Again, waterproof with an 8-hour rechargeable and replaceable lithium battery. The only difference between it and the Nuvi 550 are the maps. The lower 48 vs. all of North America.

I bought the Rider 2 GPS last summer, to tour the south of France, from Paris. I'd travelled before with maps, sometimes missing offramps out of confusion (freeway signs here are only really good if you're a local, in which case you don't need them in the first place!!). After having used a TomTom GPS in a rental car to go to Italy, I decided to get one for my Speed Triple, for the pleasure of being guided from "above". The decision was made a week before my departure, so I didn't really have time to investigate the market. I discovered only Garmin & TomTom have bike-specific models, and that both were incredibly expensive compared to car units. Being used to, and pleased with the TomTom interface, I decided to buy TT. The first Rider 2 I bought would not connect to my Motorola Razr V3i, despite the help from the sales reps, and would refuse to turn on, even fully charged. After 3 (THREE!!) trade-ins, I had to leave for my 1 1/2 month vacation with my current unit, picked up the same morning.

My first beef was to find that not only would it start trying connecting to my V3i, then fail, but I'd also have to use the cellular connection to obtain the updates, and 1 month trial of various options I'D PAID FOR!! This is totally stupid. If you're going to have to use a PC to save your SD card, let the PC handle further downloads and updates!!! It doesn't take being a racket science wiz to understand a DSL connection is more reliable than a cellular. Also, the fact you have to pay for updates, and options that should be standard, is preposterous.

My second problem, is the fact that as long as you're moving, you cannot access/change routing information. That's totally stupid too. Even at walking speeds, the unit will accept no change of route, or any other modification. When you're on the freeway, or on city streets with no place to stop, this is really aggravating. I know it's supposedly for security reasons, but changing your destination to a favorite isn't going to put you in danger in most cases, stopping and starting on a road close to heavy traffic will. In any case, you can tap all you want on a car unit, so security obviously isn't a valid reason. In any case, I hate when an appliance is set to restrain my use of it, and not let me decide for myself when/if what I do is safe.

3rd beef: sometimes, maps are obsolete from the start. When driving through Italy, I was directed to turn right on a freeway, in the middle of... fields!!! There was an offramp on my screen, miles from any actual offramps. Only corn fields, which had obviously been there for years, and weren't going to disappear in favor of a new road overnight. Really scary when you're on a schedule..

Maybe I should have listed first the On/Off button. I have very strong arms & fingers, but the time & pressure (and numerous attempts) it takes to turn it on hurts my fingers each time. Needless to even think of asking my girlfriend to do it...

The last unnicety I can think of right now, is the fact, if you're typing an address, the streets that pop up aren't entirely legible on the screen. It appears there's no way to view further past the first letters. This is really a bummer in France, where streets precede their name. Example: if you're looking for an address on Boulevard du General De Gaulle, all that appears on the screen is "Boulevard du Genera", so you have to type each and every letter in the name, or you'll get directed to another general's name, and, as there's no "back" function, you'll have to go through the whole itinerary planning procedure again to try to get it right. Total lack of user-friendliness, for a unit that's supposed to be usable by bikers, with gloves on.

On the upside, missing an exit leads the unit to recalculate another itinerary very quickly, the reason exactly I'd bought a GPS. Arrival times are incredibly accurate, even on long trips. Screen maps are legible. The RAM fixing system is great, and solid, but props there go to RAM, not TomTom. The Scala system works fine, and is reasonably audible, although the choice of a higher pitched female voice, on full volume is a must, if you're going to be riding over 100 mph.

If I'd had more time to choose, I'd have bought the Garmin Zumo instead. The price is too high for a GPS that's so poorly engineered. It does work nicely when it's all set up correctly, but not being able to take phone calls, use paid for updates, or use your PC to download data is unacceptable.
