Overall the things work, but the charger cable is too short. I literally have to place the tablet on the floor, close to the mains to charge it.

This compact and foldable 2.1 A (2100 mA) charger can QUICKLY charge Kindle Fire or Apple iPad/iPad2 (you need a different cable for each one). It is NOT one of those "ordinary" USB chargers that outputs only 0.5 A of current.

The Kindle Fire requires just 1.8A of charging current, so this charger is fine (1.8 < 2.1). It is functionally the same as Apple's 10 Watt USB charger which outputs 2.1 A, so it is also suitable for charging the iPad.

You also need to buy a $6 AmazonBasics USB Cable 2.0 A Male to Micro B (6 Feet / 1.8 Meters). Do not use one intended for your cellphone; it may not work.

The total cost is $16, still much cheaper than the dedicated Kindle charger which sells for $25. Apple's 10W charger costs $35.

You enjoy better utility with this charger/cable combo because they are separate, and the charger prong is foldable.

Additionally, the micro USB cable can be used for copying files from your computer to the Fire, and vice versa. This is the kind of cable (USB 2.0 on one end and micro USB on the other) that some reviewers were saying that Amazon should have included in the Fire box.

The main draw of this AmazonBasics USB wall charger is the 2100 mA current output, which is required for most modern smartphones and iPad/iPad2. You get these gadgets charged the fastest with this charger.

But the shape of this charger will BLOCK adjacent power outlets if it is plugged into the wall or even an extension power strip. In this respect, it is really not an improvement over Apple's 10W USB Power Adapter.

This is why I also bring along a Ziotek ZT1212518 Power Strip Liberator Plus with Pass Through, 5-Pack when I travel. It will allow all outlets to be used by extending the plug a few inches. With its pass through feature, a normal plug can be piggybacked on top of the extender plug, thereby doubling plug density (from 6 plugs to 12 plugs, for example), although the total power consumption still cannot exceed 1680 watts. It comes in a pack of 5, and the average cost is $2.65. I consider this a small price to pay for more convenience and flexibility.

In summary, I do recommend this AmazonBasics charger because it works, is well-made, and costs only 1/3 the price of Apple's part.

UPDATE 26 NOV 2012: I received one of these for review purposes and have liked it so much I've since bought 4 more as my all purpose charger. I use them primarily with a few of my Raspberry Pi Model B Revision 2.0 (512MB) units, a couple of tablets, and my Blackberry. Great all purpose unit (but still check the specifications).

USB wall chargers will have two "Output" values clearly printed on them, albeit in really tiny letters. This charger is listed as:

Output: 5.0 VDC / 2100 MA (5.0 volts Direct Current / 2100 milliamps or 2.1 amps)

Before getting an extra, or a replacement, charger for your device, check the output values listed on your existing charger, or check the documentation for the device you will be charging. You can't go wrong if you purchase a charger with the exact volts and amps as indicated (though higher amps is OK see below). An output of 1.0 to 2.0 amps is fairly common for many tablets. The 5.0 volts DC is also pretty common for a lot of devices.

If your device requires a charger with lower amperage, such as a cell phone, this could still charge it. You can ALWAYS use a wall charger with higher amperage than your device requires. Devices PULL the amperage they need, so if your phone requires 500 MA (1/2 of an ampere) and you have this 2.1 amp charger, the extra amperage won't hurt it it will just be there for extra capacity. Too much amperage is not a problem.

Since this product doesn't come with an attached cable, so long as you get a cable with a standard USB plug to attach to the charger, and the other end the correct size, you should be able to charge a lot of different products. For example, my Android tablet uses a non-standard 30 pin USB connector (the kind Apple iPads and iPhones use). I use this quite nicely for my Le Pan TC 970 Android Tablet which has a factory USB wall charger rated at 1.0 amps. With a micro USB cable, I've also used this product to power, and charge, my 500 MA (0.5 amp) Blackberry Curve cellphone. This does require keeping multiple cables around, and swapping them out as needed.

If the devices you want to charge require 500 milliamps or less, and they have a micro or mini USB port, you may want to consider the similar AmazonBasics Micro USB Wall Charger with Micro to Mini USB Adapter. Since that product comes with the cable attached you don't have to acquire anything extra (but you can't use it on iPads and iPhones).

This is a a solid device, 5 stars because it does what it's supposed to do. I will update and annotate over time if it turns out durability is an issue (if it breaks or falls apart I will post an update).

Some months ago I slightly mangled the USB micro connector on my Kindle Fire charger. It finally became so finicky I had to replace it. I know just any old wallwart will not work because it needs at least 1.8 watts. I searched through Amazon (my fav store for everything). I found the Amazon Basic Wall Charger with Amazon Basic USB cable. The charger specs say 5v@2.1A, the pins fold up and it can use a replaceable USB to micro cable. I ordered the pair for less than $17. I received the pair today. I am testing the charging performance. Reading reviews of the product, whether or not it is compatible with the FIRE is controversial. We shall see. I never liked the design of the charger shipped with the FIRE but I used it constantly while traveling to charge everything I have. Maybe I just wore it out.

OK, I have had it for a few hours. I recharged my KINDLE FIRE from 93% to Fully Charged while operating in about 30 minutes. I will let it fully discharge and see how long it takes to charge 100% both while operating and shut down.

August 16, 2012. I have been using the CHARGER with my Kindle Fire and LG OPTIMUS V and it is the best wall charger I have had for those devices. To charge my Kindle Fire from dead to full: I have not absolutely timed it but I know it takes less than 6 hours. I will try to time it more accurately. Kindle Fire has a weird habit of powering itself up when the charger cable is inserted, then you have to power it back off or it will not charge as fast.

November 8, 2012. My Basic Charger is no longer usable. It has become intermittent. My theory is that the folding plug is the cause. I will not buy another one and I have reduced the rating from 5 to 2. It is time to try something else.

Works with Kindle Fire, but only if you use the right "charging cable" or mod the adapter.

For those who are trying to use this with Kindle Fire, here's what you have to know: Kindle Fire tries to detect if it's O.K. to pull the full 1.8 A from whatever is plugged into its USB port, and it detects the "dumb" AC adapter by checking if the data wires (two inner conductors in USB A connector) are shorted together (because they wouldn't be on a computer, so it's a quick and dirty way to rule out being connected to a computer. This is not part of standard USB spec, but many tablet manufacturers are doing it, I guess following Apple's iPad). If the data wires are not shorted together, Fire assumes you plugged it into a computer and draws no more than 500 mA, so that it doesn't trigger protection circuits for (or burn out) the USB port.

Anyways. This adapter doesn't short the data wires itself, so if you want your Fire to charge at full speed and draw 1.8 A, you need to use a special charging cable that shorts the wires in the cable. Any USB cable you can use to transfer data is NOT a charging cable; a charging cable will be specifically marketted as one, as it cannot be used as regular USB cable and transfer data.

As for me, I don't have a charging cable, so I modded the adapter to short the data pins in the adapter, it's easy enough to open it up and do the quick soldering job (as usual, screws are under the sticker), but you need to have some experience soldering to make sure you don't break something while you are doing that.

It works ok...The rubber that hold the phone from the top of the phone slips making the phone slide out. If you have a case, bigger battery, or a phone sleeve your phone will not fit. My wife has the bigger battery and had to get Seidio Innotraveler Car Kit and it works much nicer. Over all if you glue the rubber in place and have the stock cover with no sleeve or case then this dock works really well.

This is a well built sturdy vehicle dock, the reason it is limited in its rotation is because the micro usb cord plugs into the base and is wired internally through the metal adjusting arm, if it had full 360 rotation the cord would twist with every turn of adjustment and eventually break making it useless so this limited rotation is a trade off for lifelong use. It's a great dock, I love it.

Dock looks great, and the functions it offers are excellent. However, when it came down to actually using the dock, it failed miserably. My stock HTC Evo 4g ("stock" meaning no protective case, large/extended life battery, etc.) was a pain in the backside to fit properly into the cradle and plug into the micro USB port. And that was when the dock was not yet mounted in my vehicle and i could use 2 hands to try to wiggle it into place/alignment. I can only imagine the awful struggle it must be with it on the dash or windshield, and basically trying to do it one-handed. When it was plugged in, it was great that it could charge as well as went straight to the car panel feature of the phone. The second downside was that I could not find a convenient place on my particular windshield to mount the dock, and the adhesive on the provided mounting surface was poor, and would not stick to my dash, though this could be because my dash has a slight curve to it. The last 2 remarks are more specific to my vehicle than general statements, but all-in-all, I was not satisfied one bit, as the dock was basically useless for me. I shortly thereafter got an RA and shipping label and it's going back in the mail today.

Good: Features, style, concept, automatically goes to car panel app, additional port to charge, rotating "neck" for different angles

Bad: Phone did not fit easily at all, did not come with charging cable or adapters for charging in your vehicle (bought separately for about $3 shipped), poor adhesive on mounting surface, "neck" is not extendable and does not rotate 360 degrees (only about 270)

This gave me everything I needed. Plugged into my outlet, provided some USB ports for charging and held my handheld in place. I used this for about 1.5/2months before it went south on me.

The part the bends in the direction you need had snapped on me when I had to rebend it into a different position. The material is some sort of bendy type metal. I think something better could have been used that wouldn't snap after a couple of repositionings. I'm not too upset about it. It was only a temporary thing for me.

Honestly though, if you don't change cars frequently or devices and plan to keep this in one to two positions then this will be great. Unfortunately for me it just didn't work out for me.

ok. these work. but...just a little bit of rough service (and by rough, I mean carrying them along on a trip in a bag) will result in the panels separating from one another (solar panel front and plastic back, creating gap which causes big problems because of the spring loaded connectors). oh sure try to take them apart with a jewelry screwdriver to "fix" it. You will find that the plastic anchors will break. and now you need another one.

as long as they don't separate, they work great. I would say they are worth buying one or two, but just keep in mind treat them as if they are faberge' eggs....

The ReStore XL claims to full charge from empty in 11 hours but I was never able to get it to 4 bars even after leaving it in full sunlight for at least 8 hours a day for 4 days. I plan to use this on my bike touring trip so I decided I needed to get the extra panels. So far they work wonders on the XL. I was able to full charge from 1 bar to 4 bars in about 3.5 hours of sunlight. I also like the testing button as well as the tiny LED that indicates when the panels are putting out power. It would flicker when place in the sun.

Installation was easy and because of the way it is designed, it folds nicely into a compact case for easy storage.

I highly recommend this if you have the XL and having trouble getting to 4 bars on the panels itself.

I got the 2 add on pack for my ReStore XL. I spent a day up in Lambeau Field with my son, and kept having to fire up the car once in a while to recharge things (2 ipads, 2 iphones) during the tailgating. I wanted more options, so started looking around Amazon, and went with the XL.

These were a good price to get three times the speed on recharging when I'm out and about, and they hook up really easily. Spring loaded hooks hold them to each other, and it comes with the piece to connect them to the XL, although the XL came with one as well.

Checking the connections is easy, just get it in sunlight and start charging, and there's a test button to press on the adapter that goes between the charger and these panels, and it turns a little light on each panel on when they've got a connection.

My problem was the build quality. The plastic is very fragile one of them came already cracked where the metal hook would slip in, so I just ended up putting that one on the "outside" where nothing would have to hook up to it. But that means I need to be careful when using them any other cracks, and I won't be able to use at least one of them.

Charging time has improved drastically, so while I haven't done any timed tests with and without, it was definitely worth it for me.

I bought this charger and the two solar panel add-on pack. The connection between the main charger and solar add on panels is so pathetically poor it will not make electrical contact.

this item is big. It ls about 4 times the size of my 7000 mah (Non-solar) new trent battery pack (without the add-on panels too). too big to carry to be of any use to me.

unfortunately since i discarded the packaging, I'm told I can't return it now. i would have rather lit my money on fire, at least i'd see some cool flames.

maybe i got a defect but i don't think so. this technology is interesting but it just isn't ready for mainstream.

if you're brave enough to try it, i beg you: save your packaging to return this when you experience your inevitable disappointment.

EDIT 11/6: After posting this review I got a very nice email from Accesory Genie, they took the product back and refunded my money. Still one star for the product but 5 stars for Accessory Genie for stepping up and makign this right for me! I would buy from them again.

We bought two sets of these radios for a family cruise. The reception was pretty good throughout the whole ship. The only time it was static'y was if one radio was on a lower deck at one end of the ship and the other radio was on an upper deck at the opposite end. When they are outside with few obstructions, there is no static at all. We would buy them again.

works good and very durable. but apparently battery life is bad in cold weather, which ruins why i got them (snowboarding). the meter drops to the half notch immediately even when fully charged when you hit freezing weather.

they still work though and work fine, but it becomes hit or miss. i still used them on the slopes and they lasted all day (all day on the slopes for me is just a message here and there ever half hour or so when people get split up, so no real intenstive conversations). but i have had periods where they ended up shutting off by the end of the day.

i should have known that though knowing its nimh batteries, but oh wells, so not the fault of the radio or manufacturer. sound is great, reception is great, and didn't have a problem on large mountains in high power mode.

but i guess these will become warm weather driving or hiking radios, and i will still have to pick up a set of li-ion radios for snowboarding.

I used them sking, worked great (good range, sounds good), batteries lasted all day (after charging initially for 16 hours per the instructions). Last year while mushroom hunting I got lost. There I was deep in the deep dark woods utterly lost with my wife and nothing on me but a knife and a bag of mushrooms. Lesson learned. This year I made sure we carried the ten essentials plus these radios. However, once we arrived after a three hour drive the first time I tried to use them one of the radios was dead. As it turns out the rechargable battery was defective it would work for a few calls then die. So, does that make the whole radio and the whole Uniden company crap? It did for me at that moment that is for sure.

I bought 2 pair of this product about 6 months ago. Since I bought them, I have consistent problem with the walkie talkie with the battery dying on me. I thought that I needed to charged the product longer but that wasn't the problem. I recommend anyone not to buy this product due to its poor quality control for this product.

I purchased this unit to provide AC power for my computer and recharge my cell phones while on long cross-country trips. The unit has worked perfectly and provided reliable power for my equipment despite some rough highways and temperatures that ranged from the low teens to well over 100 degrees F. The unit has two USB ports whose power many cell phones will accept and two AC plugs for those that will not. I found that a 150 Watt inverter that I had picked up on special a few years ago was fine for one device, but would overload on two. The 400W inverter handles the 10W iPad charger or Dell laptop power block as well as two cell phones simultaneously. I stow the inverter under the passenger seat which also mitigates the noise from the fan, but you must periodically check the red and black nuts for the DC power terminal as they will loosen over time and bumpy roads. The unit has been reliable now over 16,000 miles and still going strong.

I bought this for a road trip across the country. Didn't really have much time to shop around. It's a solid piece and offers more than most of the power inverters in the price range (at least to my limited view). Well powered USB inputs. One thing to note however is that this inverter is LOUD. Not bad if you're traveling at 65 MPH down the highway with the music blasting and the windows down, but louder than you'd prefer for simple "parked" applications.

Good piece and I'm pleased with the performance, but if you need something quiet shop around.

So when I received this inverter I expected the fan to be a little loud, based on previous reviews,and it was. Not extremely loud, but I decided to fix the problem. A screwdriver opens the case and reveals a small 40 mm fan. Probably the cheapest fan you could find. I picked up a 40 mm computer case fan from Amazon for $7 and swapped them out. I took about 10 minutes. This new fan is only 14 dBA. You need to hold the inverter about 1 foot from your ear to hear it. So now I have the best of both worlds, a solid feeling 400w inverter with fan cooling that is whisper quite. Fan link below.

This is my first power inverter I've purchased. I did however know what to expect from friends and family that have these. This inverter is one of the best built I've seen. The fan being a little loud is just the inverter keeping cool. A little fan noise should make you feel comfortable that this thing will not overheat. So far I've used it to recharge flashlights, 18 and 7.2 volt DeWalt batteries, and NiMH rechargeable AA and AAA's. It has done a fine job at everything I've put to it. It does not run hot, I'm sure cause of the awesome fan it has. And all the charges have been well within the normal charge time as opposed to me having the chargers plugged into the wall at the house. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone that needs the power while on the road.

Awesome product. However when I first hooked it up, I heard 3 beeps and silence. Spent 45 minutes checking connections and ground, when I decided just to plug something in and see what happens. It was working the whole time, it was just so quiet I didn't realize. Fan only kicks in when needed and even then it is very quiet. I bought to use camping, doing remote DJ gigs where power isn't available and for running sound equipment on float in parade. If you need cables, fuses, etc. for your inverter, I would highly recommend they are very knowledgeable and price competitive.

It worked for a few months without an issue, but started doing a "reset" every minute or so under any load condition. It now resets for a few seconds every minute or so such that it's not useable. The warranty is short so it's time for another brand. I hope you have better luck.

I have had this unit for about a month now and use it most days. The pros for this handsfree: Easy to pair to your cell phone, the answer button is well marked with bright orange, very slim modern design, holds a charge for a very long time (after a month I am still on first charge), comes with a mini usb car charger, sound quality is average or that of a quality speaker phone. The cons to this unit: My main complaint is with the on/off switch. You have to hold it in for 5-6 seconds before it will turn on or off may not seem like a lot of time but when you are in a hurry it can be very annoying. I don't know why they set it that way I can't see any benefit for it. My only other con is that the volume resets when you turn it off. I like it a little louder than the default volume but have to turn it up every time if I want it that way. Overall a good handsfree if you need one, I would suggest it for longer drives or commuting if you need to talk while you drive. To be completely hands free I would also suggest a dashmount for your phone as well. I went with the Braketron Hold-It, works great.

Great device for such a low price! It connects to my phone easily. I love that I do not have to switch this device on and off when my phone is in range...it just connects automatically. A really convenient device that fits so neatly on my car's sunvisor, so that it's barely noticeable. I hate those other bulky devices on the market. I recommend this to anyone who wants neat, functional and affordable convenience.

Expect a basic hands-free portable speakerphone. Although callers come through loud and clear, your voice sounds like you are talking through a tunnel to them. Another minor irritation is that there is no led light that remains on when the unit is on. I guess this saves the battery but you don't know when the unit is on without turning it on and off. Otherwise, its a good deal for the money as it does the same thing other more expensive blue-tooth speakerphones do.

I agree with what most of the other reviewers are saying. Couple things the battery life is really amazing. It has an incredible standby battery life. Unlike other reviews, holding the on/off button for 5 seconds to turn it off doesn't bother me. It assures me with an audible ping that the unit is indeed powered down. It has a long range so it's important to turn it off if your car is parked near your home, as in not further than a garage. Otherwise it will ring through to the speakerphone. Turning it back on is a breeze. It paired up in seconds flat upon first use. Sound quality? About 3 stars. But hey this was $16 bucks. I haven't had any complaints from the people on the other end of the line. I've checked my messages left on other's voicemail, and it doesn't sound bad at all. It really is big bang for the buck. It is light, it looks nice, and it works well. It's not up to the quality of a $100 unit, and you will see that with the precision or lack thereof on the buttons, but again, $16. It does not require a lot of toggling on and off, so I don't see any reason for the tactile operation to fail simply because it's not Mercedes compared to Geo. I would recommend it and I would buy another one.

Lastly, it is LOUD. I've had to actually turn it down because at full volume it is just blaring. Simply stated, it does a nice job of hands free for a great price. Hope that helps. If it breaks, I will annotate my review accordingly. :)

I bought the red top in July, 2009, for a kit car I am building. Just got around to installing in car and find it will not hold a charge. Contacted Optima for their help under their 3 year free replacement (also shown on Amazon web page) guarantee. Optima says Amazon is not an authorized seller of their products (even though there are thousands of their batteries listed on Amazon), and they could not do anything for me. Amazon says the battery cannot be returned to them or replaced. What do you think is going on here? Smells like fraud on someone's part to me. Was promised a call back from an Amazon supervisor, but nothing yet.

Update, after discussions with two customer service reps. and a supervisor, Amazon has agreed to honor the warranty from Optima. They will reimburse me the cost of the battery and I can then order another one. Not sure why they could not just send me a replacement. But, I am getting another one, and that is all I wanted.

I bought these batteries for a 2004 Dodge truck with the Diesel engine. One of the stock batteries split open at the negative post. The other was about to split. Both stock batteries were leaking acid. I bought the Optima batteries based on my experience with never having one leak acid, break, or clean corrosion around the post. The new Optima batteries are working fine, will see how they do five years from now.
