I have plenty of mini USB 12v adapters, but none of them worked to power the Magellan 3225 (all of the adapters just performed as powered USB connections). I plugged in the Duragadget adapter and it powered up the unit just like the original adapter which was lost. Great price.

IOGEAR Solar Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit GBHFK231 (Black)

IOGEAR Solar Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit GBHFK231I was looking for a bluetooth speaker unit to replace an old Motorola headset. I was tired of always charging the headset and I rarely used it outside of the car, so when I found this car kit I thought it would be perfect. It uses a standard micro USB port to charge (the same as my phone) which is handy, and the solar panel idea made a lot of sense. I charged the unit initially using USB, and then stuck it on my windshield below the tinted area at the top, sort of behind my rear view mirror. It's small enough that it is discreet; the controls are simple and easy to use.

Pairing my phone was very easy and it has had no problems connecting each time since then. Incoming sound quality is good and the speaker is plenty loud. People I talk to also report that I sound clear on their end, so I think the noise cancellation works well.

As far as the effectiveness of the solar charging, it seems to be working although it's hard to say I've only had it for two weeks. After the initial USB charge, I haven't had to charge the unit again via USB in that time. We've only had a few sunny days lately, but it does seem like the unit must be getting some power from the solar panel; I always use Bluetooth for my daily commute and I have yet to receive a low battery warning. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on the amount of actual talking you do while in the car.

Overall, I've found this car kit to fit my needs extremely well.

I purchased this to replace a Jabra bluetooth handsfree speaker that was being redeployed to another vehicle. This IOGear unit is smaller than the Jabra but the interface is very similar. One difference is that the Jabra will announce the phone # of the incoming call. This unit does not have that feature. Also the sound quality on the Jabra is a little clearer and louder. At the highest setting, the volume on this unit is adequate but you may need to turn the volume setting on your phone to it's highest setting. I have an iPhone 3G and the highest setting was required to get a reasonable volume. I don't think this would work well in a moving convertible with the top down.

This was easy to pair with two phones simultaneously which is nice if you have 2 drivers for the vehicle as I do for my SUV. This eliminates the need to pair the device with each driver's phone when they use the car. You pair it once and just turn it on when in the car and either or both phones are paired automatically. You must read the instructions closely to make sure the multi-pairing setting is selected first.

The Visor clip does not work with a thick visor (Visors with lighted Mirrors built in are usually thicker). The suction mount is OK but not legal in all states. Check your state laws for compliance. Tech support said they do not offer a solution for clipping the unit to the thicker Visors. The suction cups is holding up so far but I am worried about the unit falling off as outside weather conditions and temperature change. IOGear does provide an extra set of suction cups and the unit seems robust enough to survive a fall but it might be better to remount it periodically.

So far the Solar charging seems to be working well. Also because of the compact size, the unit is easy to travel with.

The Volume and Visor clip issues prevent me from giving this 5 stars. Also, it would be nice if it announced the # of the incoming call as the Jabra does. If you don't want to hassle with charging monthly (my Jabra lasted over a month on a charge in typical usage) then this is a nice solution. If you want the best voice quality and added features, I would recommend the Jabra for about $10 more as an alternative.

Had this about a month the solar feature attracted me since I never knew when there was any power left in my last unit. Actually, it's the same with this how much charge does it have left?

Charging: I did the first charge via USB, and once in between, during this four week period and every couple days put it into the sun. Have used it more than a dozen times or more on calls, and it keeps working. A previous review said the red led is supposed to light when solar charging, but I've never seen it, and not sure it's supposed to do that... only lights when plugged into USB charging. Given that a full solar charge takes more than 10 hours the limited time I place it in the sun just might be enough to keep it going. Bottom line: not sure if the solar charging really works, but I only did the USB charge after a couple weeks because I got nervous. And you do have to turn the unit over to charge, and then back again to use it so the speaker and mic are toward you. Seems to take a little more fussing to use it fully.

I like the size... and the capability to handle two phones. People seem to hear me fine. The speaker volume is not the best I have a Storm 2 and need to have it at full volume, with the Iogear at full volume, to really hear it. For me, this is the weakest point. I don't have a noisy car, but I have to kill the radio, roll up the windows and really pay attention. Or, I'm just gettin' old!

PROs

+ Loud speakerphone: I have no problem hearing the callers, even on the highway. It is a lot better than the iPhone's built-in speakerphone. Also, people I talk with say I sound crystal clear on this device.

+ Solar charging: My car is parked out in the sun while I'm at work, so why not put all that sunshine to good use? This device keeps itself charged without having to keep yet another cord in the glovebox.

+ Auto-Off: If your phone moves outside of the bluetooth range (20-40 ft), it will turn itself off after 10 minutes or so.

CONs

Power button: You have to hold the button for 4 seconds to turn this device on. I wish you could just tap it quick when you hop in the car to power it up.

The range is too good: With my car parked in my attached garage, the bluetooth never disconnects when my phone is in the house. Therefore, the speakerphone never turns off. I have to remember to manually power it down with the 4 second button press (or disable the bluetooth on my phone) when I get home.

Some reviewers commented that their device doesn't charge when it is in the sun. Basically, this device knows when it needs charged. The battery has to be low enough before the red charging light will come on when charging via solar power. It's kind of like your cellphone; your phone won't charge when you plug it in if it's at 100% already.

UPDATE: 1 year later and this bluetooth speakerphone is still going strong. I've never had to plug it in other than the initial charge when I first got it. The solar charging works great.

Want IOGEAR Solar Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit GBHFK231 (Black) Discount?

I recently purchased a new car with, what I thought was, ALL the bells and whistles. I soon realized I didn't have bluetooth in the car. At this point it would have been really expensive to install it, if it's even possible.

Then I found the IOGear Solar Bluetooth Hands-Free Car Kit. In the box there is the solar-powered hands-free speaker compact and unobtrusive. There are two housing cases one that suctions on to the windshield and one that attaches to the visor. There is also a car charging cable for when solar charging isn't feasible.

I love this product because of the solar charging feature. I placed the speaker into the housing with suction cups and placed it in the upper corner of my windshield. It doesn't obstruct my view and is constantly charging and hasn't detached at all. Once synced with my phone, all I need do is hit the big button to answer and hit it again to hang up.

I had a client in the car and had to answer a quick call. My phone was positioned to see who was calling with a quick glance and then I hit the button. He was so impressed with the way it operated, he ran out to get one himself.

I'm not sure the life expectancy of this thing but, so far, I've been very happy with it. And, it addresses the GROWING problem of people holding and talking on their phones, which apparently, the vast majority of the population are unable to do at the same time. I've almost been run into by many of them!

If you're one of those people, get this...NOW!

Garmin Vehicle DC Power Adapter for eTrex and Geko (010-10203-00)

Garmin Vehicle DC Power Adapter for eTrex and Geko
  • Plugs into any standard cigarette lighter
  • compatible with eTrex Camo®, eTrex Legend®, eTrex Legend® H, eTrex Summit®, eTrex Venture®, eTrex Vista®, eTrex Vista® H, Geko 201 and Geko 301
  • Conserves battery life
  • Convenient and easy to use
  • Genuine Garmin-quality product

Although the eTrexes were really designed for use in the outdoors, I use it in the car to help predict distance to go, etc., and if I have the local map downloaded to it, it has helped me out of binds on a couple of occasions. If you use it in the car, you really want this adaptor to save your batteries.

Not only will it save the batteries, but I can operate my Legend in normal mode to get better position from the WAAS data. (Battery saver mode precludes the use of WAAS and normal mode can really drain the batteries rather quickly.) (BTW, there is no scientific reason for reception to be better because of using this adapter.)

The cord is generously long. In fact, it can get in the way sometimes, but may allow the unit to be passed to the back seat so your back seat navigator can monitor it.

I have only two minor complaints. The first is the price. The Garmin Legend gives a lot of feature for the price, but Garmin seems to make up for it with the price of the accessories. It seems this adaptor should cost half what it does.

The second is that the fuse is accessed by screwing off the center of the cigarette plug, and the center piece has unscrewed itself on a couple of occasions now, leaving several small parts strewn about. I had to dig in my glove compartment this weekend for all of the little parts, and am waiting for the day I lose one for good. So be careful that the center is always screwed in.

I use this with the suction cup mount, which works quite well on glass. (But again, seems kind of expensive for what it is.)

This product is a must if you use your GPS in your car. It will save you many, many batteries. I like the quality. It feels solid. The LED on the lighter plug is useful. It indicates that you have power. The piece that snaps into the eTrex seems to connect well. It's never come unplugged after rolling around in my truck. The cord is plenty long for my needs--about four feet. My only complaint is the cost. The price was a little more than I would liked to have spent, but it's the only game in town.

All I require of this cable is that it plug easily into both my car and my Garmin Venture and then power my Venture. It does that swimmingly, just as it should.

The only aggravation has nothing to do with the cable: when you remove the cable, the Garmin will power down unless you hit a button telling it not to. I would often have the GPS hooked up in the car, get to the parking spot, then remove the cable in order to go and and get to the geocache. At which point the GPS would turn off (because I'd forget about the power down), and I'd have to wait around for the satellites to be found again.

I'm sure this thing works fine on some GPS units... but it's less than clear that this adaper WILL NOT WORK on the Legend or Vista. The title is misleading (it says "most" eTrex), the Product Description is just wrong (it says "all" eTrex). FOR The eTrex LEGEND or VISTA, you need a different adapter!!

This adapter is functional, is easy to use, enables continued use of backlight, and saves the batteries for walking with the eMap after arriving in a strange town. When I want to connect other media while driving with my family, I use a 12v 3-Outlet Car Power Adapter. Despite another wire, it's a worthwhile accessory.

Generac 5735 GP17500E 26,250 Watt 992cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator With Electric Start

Generac 5735 GP17500E 26,250 Watt 992cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator With Electric StartThe generator was easy to assemble, started right up after filling oil reservoir and fueling. I haven't had a power outage yet since getting this generator (go figure). The only drawback I've seen (so far) is the information provided on the available plug receptacles is rather weak. The 50 amp plug is located underneath the panel face where all the other plug receptacles are located. It has a wire "latch hook" to keep the plug from falling out, but no info on how to properly use it. I had difficuly locating the correct male plug with a "straight" out feature since most are 90 degrees. It would have been nice to have the male plug-end supplied with the generator. I finally found one at Grainger (cost over one hundred bucks, but it's top notch). Although the muffler assembly is impressive looking, it's not quite as quiet as I expected.

This is an impressive machine. Our home's generator wiring was upgraded to 6/3 cable, feeding a transfer switch and dedicated sub panel with additional individual center-off transfer switches wired to it. I hadn't upgraded the inlet plug from 30 amps to 50 amps, yet. Got this generator delivered in front of our garage on a pallet. Slid it half way off the pallet and used a small hydraulic floor jack to lift it by one end, attached the wheels, then slid the pallet out from under it, attached the legs and rolled it into position behind our house. Added the included oil, some fuel, connected the battery and it started right up.

This unit's muffler quiets down the exhaust noise surprisingly well. In-fact the most prominent noise coming from this unit, comes from the engine's mechanical noise and forced-air fan. When the idle control is enabled the generator spins down and gets really, comfortably quiet. When the idle control senses a load, it spins the engine back up to full speed.

Plugged it into our inlet box via it's L14-30R socket, flipped every circuit over including our 65LRA/240V central air conditioner which connects to the generator via the sub-panel. Turned on every load I could think of, then engaged the A/C. I almost didn't notice when the 15,600w startup load from the A/C hit the generator, all I heard literally was a half second blip in engine noise.... in other words... with all the loads we currently have wired in (~8000w)... it was able to power them easily from a L14-30 plug... nice! It will be interesting when the L14-50 gets wired in and we add more circuits on the sub-panel.

To deal with the noise, I'll be building a small shed for this unit, near the house. I'm on the fence as to whether I'll attach a secondary muffler to this unit, since the exhaust itself, is already pretty quite.

The one draw back on this unit is that it consumes a good portion of fuel... 16 gallons in 10 hours @ 50% load.

Update 9/11/2012:

Since my original post, I did purchase a Walker Exhaust 22266 Quiet-FlowSS Muffler to use as a secondary muffler. Along, with some WALKER EXHAUST 40002 to connect the generac to the muffler... it's made HUGE difference in terms of quieting down the exhaust noise. BTW, the muffler exhaust port on this generator has an outer diameter (O.D.) of 1.5" inches.

Keeping in mind that this thing weights 390lbs, I decided to build a small shed for this generator so that we'd have it available for use in extremely bad weather (where it would be difficult to roll this thing into position...). Also, while the muffler does an excellent job at quieting down the exhaust noise, the shed serves to cut down on this generator's air cooling induction fan & engine noise, as well.

We ran 4 THWN 6 gauge cables ( through 2" SCHD 40 PVC conduit, 18" inches underground...) from the shed to our home, to support full 50 amp 240V service from the generator. Yes, this generator puts out a total of 72AMps at 240V, if we want to use that extra power in the future, I'll have to pull additional wires through our conduit and hook up to one of the generator's other power outlets. We also ran 2 THWN 10 gauge cables, from our home to the shed, to support a 20 amp 120v circuit. This circuit we use primarily to keep the generator's starter battery fully charged, it also provides us with a heavy duty outdoor outlet on that side of home, which comes in handy.

In terms of performance, we've had a brief power outage recently, and the generator, inside it's shed, has worked flawlessly.

Update 10/31/2012:

Lost power during Hurricane Sandy, for about 20 Hours. Generator ran the entire time, without a problem. First long duration run. My wife, daughter and I were VERY happy with the outcome. Worth every penny.

Buy Generac 5735 GP17500E 26,250 Watt 992cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator With Electric Start Now

Ok, it does come without the wheel kit or handle attached, but it wasn't too terribly bad to assemble. A bit of leverage and some lumber, and everything went together as instructed. Taking my time (and stopping to get some wasps out of the garage) it took me about an hour. I do feel that Generac could at least attach the wheels, even if they do leave the handle off to protect it during shipping.

Starting it was a breeze, and it runs smoothly, if a bit on the loud side. Not terribly annoying, but they could improve the muffler a bit.

Overall, it is stable, easy to operate, and so far has been reliable. I am quite happy with the generator. I would make sure that if you are having it delivered to a residence, the vendor makes appropriate delivery arrangements. Mine showed up on a 48' FedEx Freight truck that almost took out the power lines and had trouble making the corners in the neighborhood.

This generator is solid. It ran for 10 days straight due to Hurricane Sandy. I only shut it down when we were not home or for maintenance. Powered my entire home without fail. The only warning I will give you is that make sure you have a lot of gas. I had 60 gallons in the shed, but that really is not a lot for this big guy. I was burning 1.2 gallons an hour. Im upping my supply to 75 gallons so I at least have 3 full days of runtime before I need to reload.

Your other option is a natural gas conversion

Want Generac 5735 GP17500E 26,250 Watt 992cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator With Electric Start Discount?

This generator puts out a great deal of power. It will power most average size homes. I use an indoor manual transfer swith and an outdoor receptacle to connect the unit to the main 150 Amp house panel. I also have a wattmeter box to monitor the draw so as not to overload the generator. This generator is very heavy. When it gets delivered you need to make sure it can be set in an enclosed area like a garage. You need to put on the wheels and the front skid and handle. You will most likely need a floor jack to lift the unit up to install the wheels. It is not quite as easy as you may think. However once oiled and fueled up it started immediately and ran very smooth. It was actually quieter than I had expected. The fuel tank holds 16 gallons so be sure to get some Stabil to keep the gas fresh. This generator puts out a lot of power for the money and I would not hesitate to recommend it.

I will break this down into a short pros and cons segment.

pros: Very lightweight! When compared to an Apple brand, this thing is lite. The other thing I like is the red light. If you need to charge at night, this helps you find what you're looking for.

Cons: Doesn't feel as durable because of how lite it is. The Apple Brand feels much more durable. Also I noticed it doesn't seem to Charge an iPad 2 as fast. Its close, but It took almost an hour longer to fully charge than the Apple Brand.

Overall not a bad travel charger. Has worked fine so far, just wished it charged a little faster.

Look at the product in the picture YOU WILL NOT GET THAT. Read the product description YOU WILL NOT GET THAT. I am not sure about the other reviews and can only assume that the product they received was in fact the pictured product. That is not the case with who I ordered from, Dealaroma. What came in my mail is this tiny little square thing with NO folding plug and NO LED light that the USB cord plugs into and sits somewhat sideways. ANY touching of the cord, like the wind from a ceiling fan will cause the cord to fall out. This is a horrible product but the fact is that it is not at all what I ordered.

The blurb says "great for charging iPhones, iPods, GPS..." NOT!!!! Do not buy this!! I would have given it ZERO stars but Amazon won't let me. Even though it has a 3 amp fuse the converter only allows it to supply each port with .5 amp, not enough to charge any modern USB devices which all require 1 amp. It will NOT power my TomTom GPS, my Samsung phone, my Phillips MP3 player, my LG phone, or anything else I have plugged into it. I threw it in the trash. Other reviews told me this in advance, but the blurb said otherwise and I believed the blurb. I will not be buying any further products from this seller because of the deceptive advertising. I'm still looking for a 4 port USB charger, darn it.

I have my Garmin traffic reciever plugged into the main socket as well as a mini USB and 2 x USB extention cables (to allow passengers to charge up devices). I'm not sure why others are having issues but it powers and charges my EVO 4G and GPS just fine. Simultaneously. I've even used another connection to charge my work phone and it charged fine. thumbs up from me.

As someone else already noted, there are better methods of listening to your MP3 player in your car, such as through the tape transmitter. For those of us who don't have it, though, this is a sufficiently apt substitute.

First, whoever said that there are 8 presets must be thinking of some other device. You only have 3 presets here, but you define them yourself from the whole FM range, an you can always deviate from them. Hence, this thing has an advantage over, say, the iTrip because you can easily surf between three stations if the one you're listening to now starts getting static.

Second, I find it powerful enough in most situations. I live in Boston, and drive around it often enough. Downtown, most stations will give you a small amount of interference, and that is probably the best you will get. Drive around the suburbs, though, and you can easily find around 3 stations that will play almost as well as your CD player in terms of quality.

The secret to this is to set your iPod volume somewhere around the middle to upper two-thirds of its capacity. If you set it to the maximum, all bass lines will be completely distorted. Set it to the middle, though, and you'll have rather crisp audio, although you will have to compensate for the lost volume by turning up the car radio. Hardly anything to complain about, though.

My two complaints with this device are these:

First, the marked price is far too high. You can find a much cheaper device on eBay, or even in the Amazon marketplace. I paid around $20 for it, plus delivery.

Second, some types of music sound distorted even at medium volumes on a lot of the stations. I have in mind the Waltz of the Snowflakes from the Nutcracker when I write this. Beside it, just about every song I played sounded clean, although sometimes a given station would encounter pockets of interference.

Given that a more powerful transmitter would probably end up messing up the radio reception of neighboring cars, I'm prone to think that this is an inherent problem to all FM transmitters. I think this is one of the better ones, though, because of its preset options, its ability to scan the whole FM range, the fact that it doesn't drain your iPod's battery, and the fact that you can manipulate your iPod volume on it for better performance. The iTrip can't do three of these. You will, of course, have to sit down in your car and look for usable stations manually, .2 by .2, but ultimately, and if you have no other option available, I think you will find this device to do a good job. Just do yourself a favor, and find a cheaper source.

I have owned this iPod FM transmitter for about 11 months and have used it while driving thousands of miles through many FM radio markets. In urban areas this unit is not useable, because, despite the availability of the three FM presets, you can't find open FM frequencies in urban areas, and if you do, the unit's FM modulator is not strong enough to overcome adjacent channel interference from city FM radio powerhouses, and typical poor car stereo FM tuner performance (selectivity).

If you live in the country this unit's FM performance is just fine, unless of course you regularly travel to a nearby urban area.

Also, my unit "overdeviates"--the iPpod audio is distorted on loud passages when hooked up to my Dodge Durango with the factory stereo installed. When the FM transmitter is hooked to my Subaru's top-of-the-line McIntosh stereo, the audio is good.

I believe this product is overpriced, and should be sold with a caveat: Not useable in and around major cities.

It's only three stars now, because the Monster iCarPlay 200 wireless is a much better solution. It finds stations you could not find with the iCarPlay Plus, which I stopped using because it was just more hassle than fun to use driving in Los Angeles. Below is my original review of the iCarPlay Plus, before the "200" model came out:

*******

I have used the Griffin and Belkin FM transmitters, and the Monster is the only one that is useful for me driving around Los Angeles, where almost all of the available FM stations are in use. The Monster has a lot less static and locks onto the station a lot better than the other two. It is good to have the three pre-sets on teh Monster ... that are easy to set. I need the three pre-sets bacause as you drive, one station gets noisy (as you get closer to the transmitter of the real owner of that frequency) and you need to change to another. It is a hassle to change the station on the radio and also change the station on the Monster, but that is life with an FM transmitter. It is definitely an imperfect solution. (If you have a cassette tape player in your car, use the Sony cassette adapter instead. I never tried the Monster cassette adapter.) For people who drive shorter distances or who don't have as many FM station broadcasting nearby, the other brands might be ok.

I absolutely LOVE my monster I have used it for my iPod Classic and my 1st gen iPhone. Works great! Charges and plays like its say but... DOES NOT WORK on new apple products.. I've tried the new nano, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S... do not buy this if you have one of the newer products. It will still play through your stereo but it WILL NOT charge. Hope this was helpful!

I did a lot of online research before buying this transmitter. I had low expectations since it seemed like most of them have mediocre quality and problems of one kind or another especially in metro areas. I decided on this one since this best met the criteria I had set for the purchase:

1. Good Reviews

2. Price at $50

3. Easily protable from one car to another

4. Wanted the passenger to be able to control it in addition to the driver.

This product more than exceeded my expectations. The sound quality is awesome. I have never had any difficulty finding at least one station where there is no interference. Also, the protability and passenger use has really come in handy. It is great to let the passenger control the tunes.

I would highly recommend this product if your needs are similar to mine.
