Sunforce 22007 Coleman 7.5W Folding Panel

Sunforce 22007 Coleman 7.5W Folding Panel
  • Charges USB or 12 volts powered devices
  • Charges smartphones, cell phones, digital cameras, GPS systems and more
  • Fully weatherproof for added durability
  • Perfect for traveling, hiking, camping, emergency situations and a variety of outdoor activities
  • Comes equipped with grommets for easy travel and storage

During this review, I am going to be comparing the Sunforce 22007 Coleman 7.5W Folding Panel to the Goal Zero Nomad 7, which is the only other solar charger that I have had experience with and the product with which it is competing. Right out of the box, I was impressed by its compactness. I opened its velcro latch and spread it out. The charger has square, polycrystalline solar panels that make efficient use of space. The panels don't have a perfect appearance, as the horizontal conductive lines are inconsistent, but I don't expect this to hurt the panel's performance. Along the edges it has rope loops that are meant to be attachment points, which are comparable to the Nomad 7. On the back of the panel, there is a zipper enclosure that includes a power regulator which has a permanently attached 12 Volt adapter and a female, USB port. When you unzip the pouch all the way, the 12 Volt adapter tends to fall out. I couldn't wait to test it out, so I ran outside and pointed it toward the sun. At 3 in the afternoon on a clear day, I measured 5 Volts and .83 amps (A little over 4.15 watts). Compared this to the Goal Zero Nomad 7, which measured 5 Volts at .65 amps (3.28 watts) under the same conditions. I am guessing this difference in performance is due to the 0.5 extra watt of power rating from the Coleman Sunforce panel, as well as a better USB power regulator.

I tested the panel in low light conditions: An overcast morning, and it didn't produce any power, whereas the Goal Zero Nomad 7 did produce 5 Volts at 40 mA. This difference is probably due to polycrystalline solar panels vs monocrystalline solar panels, which are known for the low light efficiency. This was a very low light test.

I also tested it in a mostly cloudy midday sun situation: The Sunforce Coleman panel produced 5 Volts at .35 amps, whereas the Nomad 7 produced 5 Volts at .3 amps. They were both able to start a charging cycle on my phone under these conditions: 65 percent sky coverage according to the National Weather Service with stratocumulus perculidus clouds, with very little sky visible. This result reinforced my confidence in the Sunforce panel, given my foggy morning test the day before.

I purchased this solar charger to provide me with power while camping, so its compact nature is a plus, and it will be an invaluable resource when in an emergency situation. Knowing that you will be able to charge your communication and navigation devices with only the power of the sun is a great feeling. At this price, I couldn't pass trying it out, as I intend on getting more as gifts.

Compared to Goal Zero:

Pros:

Better output. at 3 PM 5 Volts .8 amps compared to 5 Volts .65 amps with Goal Zero in direct sunlight.

Smaller

Lighter (Even with 12V adapter. It isn't removable)

Cons:

12 Volt adapter tends to flop about when you open the zipper.

The usb port is very close to the zipper enclosure if you intend to enclose your charging device within the zipper. (This may have not been intended by the designer)

Perhaps slightly less low light performance.

I don't have any special equipment to give you hard numbers on voltage or amperage but I can tell you that it will charge my iPad2 to 87% with out the need for an external battery pack like my Nomad 7 system does.

The unit is not as "universal" as the Goal Zero system, but it does have a 12 cigarette lighter permanently attached for 12 volt charging and a single USB plug.

Edit 1-11-13

I'm updating my review and taking away 2 starts as it no longer functions after being exposed to moisture/rain. I plugged in my panel to charge a lawn tractor battery that powers my gate on a cloudy day. It started to rain, but I was not worried as the charger was out of the direct rain fall and it is "weatherproof". The next day I went out with my volt meter and was not getting any output from the 12 volt plug or any power from the USB plug.

I still think this panel is a good overall deal, but it is not weatherproof.

The Good: light weight, charges pretty fast for a solar panel, has webbing straps to hang from my backpack while i wear it on a hike or MTB ride, very tough and flexible panels that wont shatter/crack easily i dropped it a few times while camping and riding my bike.I recently my HTC Rezound was almost dead so i plugged it in and threw the panel on my dash went in the grocery store and came out about 45 mins later and it was at 50%. this thing is pretty cool I cant wait to take it camping/backpacking.

The bad: USB plug is in a weird spot and there is not much clearance around it so its kinda tight to plug it in because the zipper is close to the plug. The 12v Car charger is permanently attached to the panel and it is bulky(I just cut it off because I wanted it to pack flat)

Great for: backpackers, busy people who love to use their phone/GPS/Ipod while off the grid.

Over all I like it a lot, and the downsides are very minor it out performs a similar one sold at harbor freight that is heavier and bulkier and only puts out 5 watts.

  • Self Mating Contacts Lock Into Housing
  • 50 Amp, Can Be Crimped or Soldered
  • Includes Housing and Two 6 AWG Contacts
  • 1 Set per Package (Set is One Housing and Two Contacts)

I got this to use with my trailer winch. This is a single connector, not a pair. It fit good with the old connector that was already on my truck. I am satisfied with it and would do the same purchase again.

This is intended for you to solder the cable into the metal tabs but you could probably crimp it instead if you absolutely have to. Quality is good I don't think any other brands would be better. After the first season it is still working good.

I think the shipping (and handling) was rather high ($1 more than the part cost) but I did know this up front and even with the shipping cost it was still the cheapest option I found to get a single connector. It took about 8 days to receive it on the east coast it is mailed via USPS from CA I think.

This is a good 6AWG connector for battery cables. It would not be a good connector for wet environments as the back is open. But you could wrap it up in tape. It was the only connector I could find for the large 6 awg wires.

My title tells you most of the story about this. It will pass some power from one car to another thru the lighter outlets, but we're talking "trickle charge" power, not "Instant starting/boost" power. If you have a good car battery but left your lights on while you went into a movie or such, this can recharge it, but will probably take 15-30 minutes (or more depending on how totally drained it is). However, if the dead car battery is bad and won't hold a charge, you don't want to wait that long, or you have other car problems (like something draining power), this won't work for you and you're better off with the old jumper cables. They say in the manual "Let it charge for 5 minutes until the green LED comes on, then disconnect it and try starting the car" followed by "If it doesn't start, let it charge another 5-10 minutes and try again", but at the under 5 amp rate I'd bet my 15-30 minutes minimum is more realistic.

Some other details if your interested, this device actually "Pumps" power where I connected it between 2 batteries and the "Good/source" battery dropped to 12.5V while the "Bad/charging" battery went up to 15V (and since I know 15V+ is "Overcharging", I pulled the plug there). Seeing the voltage go that high tells me it doesn't regulate the output power (and they even say on the box "Puts out 16-17V"), so you'd never want to use this to connect 2 batteries together and go off leaving them. I also checked the current draw and it pulled 2.7 amps while putting 1.8 amps into the other battery. My battery I tested with may not have been very drained, but still the

Samsung Galaxy S Navigation Vehicle Mount Compatible with Verizon DROID CHARGE SCH-I510

Samsung Galaxy S Navigation Vehicle Mount Compatible with Verizon DROID CHARGE SCH-I510I bought this and started using it with my brand new charge 6/26/11, the first day I was eligible to get my new phone!

This thing is incredibly good:

PROS:

-quality materials, Samsung brand, excellent fit and finish. It feels very solid, and holds the phone rigid. The suction clamp is working great on my dash as well as windshield.

-I've had no problems finding good position with windshield or dash mount. I've got it out of the sun and in perfect position for use, without excessive distraction. The hinge and partial ball socket made finding a good position easy.

-BIG PLUS!the mount's micro USB connects BOTH power and AUDIO!!!!! slip it in, clamp it on, and you're DONE! no digging around for one cable for power, one for audio out. If you chose to, you can still access audio thru the headphone jack on the phone; I do that when I'm listening to an Audible book and the gang is watching a movie in the back, or just wants quiet.

Cons:

-Only one so far; it's a little tricky removing the phone from the clip. Not shown is that the phone is first slipped into the clip holster of the mount, then the part with usb plug slides up and into the phone. The slide is all really good plastic and has a quality feel and movement. It's just a little hard to snap the phone out of the basic clip. It is really securely held. I'll post pictures of the sliding mechanism.

-Not sure this counts, but of course the phone can't be in a protector when put into this slick, snug device

I am very pleased with this mount, and it feels like it will last for years. Highly recommended

The Samsung Car Dock was a big disappointment. A Car Dock should allow the user to easily install and removed the phone every time you get into the car. It is not easy to install or remove the phone with this mount. It automatically connects power to the phone when the mount slides shut. It just does not do it reliably.

The Samsung pictures do not show you that mount has two main pieces that disconnect. I uploaded some pictures to show how this works. You have two ways to install the phone into the mount. Neither of these methods is easy to do when you have the unit mounted to the lower part of the windshield where there is limited space to maneuver.

Install Method 1:

You could separate the pieces by pushing on the latch release. Then you push open the slider and slip the phone into the sliding piece. Then you squeeze the slide shut so that it inserts its connector into your phones micro usb port. Next you hold the release latch open and connect the slider to the windshield mount.

I mount my unit low on the windshield so that I don't block visibility. This leaves very little room to connect the pieces together. This makes it tough to install or remove the phone.

Install Method 2:

You could leave both pieces connected. You slide open the slider. Insert the phone. Squeeze the slider shut and the Car Dock connects the power port. This also is a two handed operation. The slider did not always move smoothly as I tried to close it requiring one hand to hold the mount and the other to operate the slider.

The major problem with this device is how the unit connects to the cell phone power port. The unit automatically inserts its connector into the cell phone's micro usb port when you slide it close. These small micro usb connectors are relatively fragile. The alignment has to be very precise between these small parts. The tolerances on these plastic pieces in the Car Dock are not good enough to ensure that this will work properly. The user cannot tell if the alignment is off. Any misalignment could damage your phone.

I had used my Car Dock for a few days when it malfunctioned. When I closed the slider, it did not align properly. It gouged the plastic case of my phone and then bent the connector inside the car dock as it inserted the power connector. The alignment must have been only a couple of millimeters off, since it did connect the power and the Car Dock operated. But it had damaged the connector (see uploaded closeup of connector) and gouged the cell phone case around the power connector.

I was lucky it only bent the Car Dock side of the connector. If it had bent or broken the connector on the phone side, the phone would have been ruined. I have uploaded a close up showing the bent connector.

When the Car Dock worked, it worked well. The phone was held securely. There was adequate adjustment range. While the phone is in the mounted, it worked well. However, installing and removing the phone was too much hassle. The power connector insertion mechanism is unreliable. I am looking for a different car mount option. Maybe my Car Dock was a defective unit, but I do not want to risk damaging my phone with this product.

Update: Ordered Bracketron Cup holder mount from Amazon. It works great with the Charge. It is cheaper, easy to load and unload, does not block line of sight and looks good.

Having had the car/GPS mount for my previous Droid original, I bought this with my new Charge. The display does not tilt down enough! My dash does slope up a bit but my org Droid and my old fashion GPS had way more rotation ability. Plus the attaching of the phone requires two hand and being stopped. Maybe it would work better as a windsheild mount but I have not tried that. Great accessory to have but maybe not this version.

Not sure why Samsung would engineer a car mount that does not work with the extended life battery and back on the phone but they did. Makes it a non-starter for me since I have yet to find a way to make the standard battery last through the day and do not want to have to change batteries everytime I want to use a car mount...great potential with horrible execution.

Want Samsung Galaxy S Navigation Vehicle Mount Compatible with Verizon DROID CHARGE SCH-I510 Discount?

Although not mentioned in the text of the instructions at all, and not very obvious on the dock, the square box-like section of the mount containing the mini-USB connector slides down and out to connect or disconnect the phone. Sliding this section down allows the phone to snap into or out of the mount easily, then sliding up the connector connects the phone easily. Realizing this is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to operate and use the mount, as it is almost impossible to insert the phone with the plug section in its "up" position (as shipped).

Once inserted with the USB engaged, the mount has several nice features. A special dashboard appears with five standard options arrayed. Google Maps, Voice Search, Navigation, Contacts, and Search. The phone stays on (if powered, OR in Google Maps) and switches to speakerphone mode by default. The Navigation button produces the Verizon Navigator App. Not a problem if you prefer the Google Map navigator, the Google Map button can be used to "Get Directions" and will switch to the Google Navigator if it is loaded (just update the Map App). Also, using the Voice button allows the command "Navigate to....." which gets you into the Google navigation. I tried the command "Call....so-and-so", and this also works, as well as usual Google searches.

One problem with Voice search It works best with the car parked and quiet. If there is substantial background noise (such as while driving on a highway, or with music playing), the phone does not recognize the end of a command and keeps listening. Also, it often displays lists of possible hits that are most useful if not driving.

Naztech N100 Universal 1000mAh Compact Vehicle and Travel USB Charging Kit Retail PackagedTwo stars for no electrical specifications in the listing.

iPads require 2.1 amps at 5 volts through the USB connector. this is more than double the power that 'standard' USB ports provide. With no actual specs published, I doubt these devices are capable of charging iPads in less than 24 hours, if at all.

OTOH, there is the remote possibility that they do provide that power; anyone have more facts than my idle speculation?

Solio Mono Emergency Hybrid Solar Charger
  • High capacity internal battery stores energy for up to a year
  • Adapter Tip System reduces waste and increases compatibility
  • Rechargeable from included USB cable or the sun
  • A full Solio Mono will charge a typical mobile phone 1-1.5 times
  • Durable and weather resistant

before you buy this product check on the charging time. In order to actually use it to solar charge you need to leave it in the direct sunlight for about 5 days!!! If you plug it in to a wall socket or computer to charge it takes about 4-5 hours. If you are planing to use it as a practical extra battery or solar charger don't waste your money. I live in california with direct sun all the time it charges terrible!!!!

Buy Solio Mono Emergency Hybrid Solar Charger Now

I received my Solio Mono as a promotion from my local public radio station. My box came with: a hemp bag, instructions, carabiner, AC cable plus 4 changeable prongs, USB cable (for charging the Solio), charging cable that connects to the charge tips, and 4 tips: female USB, mini-USB, micro-USB, and a Sanyo 6 tip. There are additional tips available from Solio's website if none of these will work for you.

The micro-USB tip attaches directly to my phone, and I use the USB female tip to charge my iPod Touch via its USB cable. You can use it to charge anything that has a USB charging cable, so that's really handy. My AC adapter came with interchangeable prongs for the USA, Australia/NZ, UK/Europe, and those round prongs possibly used in Asia, which is really neat. I have a trip to NZ planned, and I'll take the Solio instead of my devices' respective charging paraphernalia. While this means I can charge only one device at a time, I can charge one device overnight while the device is plugged in (and charging itself too), then charge the other device during the day while it and the Solio are stowed in my backpack!

Note: you can't charge a laptop or any heavy power usage items with the Solio. It's designed for "personal electronics" like cellphones and MP3 players. It will work with digital cameras that can charge via USB, they say on their website.

The thing that loses Solio points is solar charging. I've owned it for 4 days and it charges very slowly using just the sun. I've had it outdoors on my sunny porch for a couple of days and it's only gotten one "tick" of charge. Now, I live in the Northeast US, and that spot gets direct sunlight only in the afternoon. Both days have been partially cloudy, but this seems sad. At this point I'm ready to ask for some sort of protective cover for the solar cell and just use it as a charger/spare battery! Solio claims it takes 20 hours to get a full charge, but unless you're under ideal conditions it's going to take much longer. So can't recommend that anyone count on it for seriously charging a device using only the sun. If that's your need, you should go for Solio Universal Hybrid Solar Charger, which is heavier but has 3 collectors instead of just 1.

So I like it as a travel charger and emergency battery. I don't think you can expect to reduce your energy use and count on getting any significant charging from the sun, unless you live in a sunnier clime and can keep it in stronger sunlight more of the day. You might get enough charge for an emergency call, or to keep a device topped off, so it's better than not having a solar collector, I guess. But if you have multiple devices that you travel with, and you'd like to have some spare charge and not carry all those different charge plugs, then this might be useful for you.

AWFUL. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY AND ESPECIALLY DO NOT USE AS EMERGENCY BACKUP. IT WILL NOT SUPPLY ENOUGH POWER TO CHARGE ANYTHING.

It does tale kinda long to charge it, but I got it to charge in my car easy, in the winter even. Your windows need to be clean (it won't charge under half of my back window because of this), and your car needs to be in the direct sun, but even driving, in my boyfriend's hatchback, we clip it to the cracked window & it charges fine.

It's great for trips, where I know I'm going to burn out my battery on my smart phone, as an emergency back up.

To be honest, this thing sucked. I bought it to use on a 16-day trip to Europe, to charge my iPod Touch (I used it to call home with wifi where I could find it). It didn't work at all. Luckily, I was on a music tour and a few of the 46 band members had computers I could plug into. The charger could charge via USB, but it never charged in the sun, and it would stop charging a device after a few seconds; you had to keep pressing the start button.

I assume it was defective; after I returned I returned it, and traded it in for the three-panel version (I had the choice of another mini or trading up, so I decided to see if the bigger one worked. It does, and I'm pleased with it. As for this mini, it either needs more work or needs to be abandoned.

There are days when I don't feel very smart.

When I got this unit I wanted to test it so I put the cigarette lighter plug on and plugged it into the car, plugged in my electric drill and then blew the fuse on the cigarette lighter socket.

Dummy, the lighter fuse is only 15 amps.

12 volt system at 15 amps, 12 x 15 = 180watts.

Even if you get a 50 amp fuse, 12 x 50 = 600 watts.

You can't fully use this.

This has to be connected directly to the battery for full use.

Connected directly to the battery works fine.

I had purchased a similar 50-watt transformer (by Samsonite) last year to convert power for a lighted Christmas display we had purchased in Germany. We bought more items this year and needed additional transformers, but unfortunately the Samsonite product (which works great) was no longer available.

The notes on this product indicate that it should only be used for continual usage for devices requiring only up to 30 watts. Not quite. I used it with a 30-watt ornament, and the black-colored area of the transformer becomes so hot you can barely touch it. The other transformer I have doesn't even get warm, even with a 45-watt device.

I don't trust this one, and have ordered a higher-powered replacement. Certainly not worth an electrical fire! Spend a little extra money, and get a better quality product.
