This panel is my first foray into folding portable solar storage. The outer shell material appears to be a plasticized ballistic "rip stop" type nylon material [pattern] of at least a few mils thickness. (I will break out the micrometer if anyone is truly interested)

This product does not technically fall under the mil spec construction guidelines as identified by the manufacturer. The mil-spec units start at 30 Watts (or 62 Watts) and do not include the "accessory kit" . The accessory kit is only included with the 25 Watt and below units. I have not verified the low end of the scale for the accessory kit being included. But the buyer would be wise to ensure that if the kit is not included, that they have it.

This product material is stiff below 75F / 23C and prone to maintaining a memory. If allowed to be stretched out during daylight hours it will mostly conform to the flat or mildly curved surface below it, however below this temperature one will experience some mild displeasure at attempting to fold it when the following to conditions have been met. The materials has a core temp of >75F / 23C and it has been allowed to cool in a open/unfolded position. To create the least amount of stress on the panel one must consider folding these panels when warm. Unfolding the panel does not pose the same challenge as they will conform to the open position once warm.

This solar panel creates voltages that can be unhealthy for sealed/maintenance free batteries/ gel batteries and other types of batteries that do not allow the replenishment of water/acid levels. While the amperage levels are well below the unsafe levels, overcharging batteries by applying high voltages over long periods of time can produce undesirable performance characteristics in the batteries. The optional voltage regulator / charge controller is HIGHLY recommended.

This is a casual use panel. The intended purpose is to suit the qualifications of being ultra portable, mildly rugged and super cool.

The efficiency falls in between that of a rigid glass /silicone panel and above the older amorphous technology. Under peak/ideal conditions somewhere around 19%.

This panel is capable of charging smaller electronic devices directly so long as its output is regulated. On extremely bright days with low load is easily capable of producing voltages that have the potential to severely damage most consumer electronics.

In my setting I use it to keep several gel cell batteries (in parallel) topped up while car camping. This is easily enough power to run many strings of LED lights, a moderate sized car based audio system and the 12VDC margarita blender occasionally through a night and easily for 5-7 days of car camping with no outside input.

I cannot speak to survivalist purpose, but I must say that given proper care and conditions I would expect these panels to work as well as any other glass / silicone unit without the weight. Perhaps even longer for the mil-spec version.

As far as bang for the dollar is concerned. If you are looking for huge power outputs. These are not the panels you are interested in. These panels are built solely for the purpose of being lightweight, rugged and portable.

And with that purpose in mind I must say that i highly recommend them!

This is actually a pretty nice solar charger. It only has two negative aspects. First, it only has an energy efficiency rating of about 7%, and even with tender loving care, you can forget about it lasting more than about 3-4 years.

Originally touted as "weatherproof," this Global Solar device actually can be ruined by rain. As for the sun, it tends to dry out and crack when exposed to long sessions and the materials break down with sustained use. Even when pampered, a 3-year lifespan is all that can be hoped for, and this according to the manufacturer. It's great for the camper or hunter, who needs to pack it in a backpack, but somewhat lacking for the survivalist, who expects a 25+ year service life.

The 6W or 12W may be the way to go unless money is no object. Sadly, there's no other option except heavier glass paneled portable units, which weigh about nine pounds. If cared for, though, the heavier glass unit will provide significantly longer, if still indefinate, use.

Used this product only a few times so far. It has not let me down. I would recommend using the charge controller with it. I hooked up two 7A-hr batteries (from a computer UPS). My system filled my backpack, but wasn't too heavy for our hike. This system worked great to keep my sat-phone charged as well as power left for charging some dry cell batteries.

I had previously purchased the 12W version and discovered it to be very effective, especially on cloudy or overcast days. Since the 12W version had served me so well, I decided to purchase the more powerful 25W version even knowing the company is now out of business and the obvious greater expense.

I travel frequently in a van camper where weight & space limitations are an ever present factor, which is why I was attracted to the light weight, flexible technology in the first place. I also like to boon-dock; in those instances a well charged battery is essential.

The first thing I noticed about the 25W version is its tendency to retain a shape memory. Presumably, because the internal wires are heavier to be able to carry more electricity? Don't know, I'm not that savvy about these things.

My only concern about this model, is whether or not those wires will break with repeated opening and closing of the unit. The 12W version does not display that tendency.

A few months ago I replaced all the interior lighting in the van with LED bulbs, they are pricey but their lower power consumption, while providing adequate lighting, has proved to be very helpful, leaving more power available for the battery operated fan, TV or DVD player.

I also purchased the "Y" cable so both panels can be used simultaneously and as the literature recommended, a charge controller to prevent battery damage. So far it is all working well for my situation. If anything changes I will revise this review.

Schumacher SC-200A Speedcharge Charger/Maintainer

Schumacher SC-200A Speedcharge Charger/Maintainer
  • Ideal for small motorcycle, ATV, snowmobile, and lawn tractor batteries
  • Maintains small and large batteries
  • Includes a quick harness with 3 connectors
  • Provides 2-amp trickle for 12-volt batteries and 4-amp trickle for 6-volt batteries
  • Ideal for 6 and 12 volt batteries

I purchased this unit two months ago, and I have used it twice since then. The first time, I used it to charge my Lincoln, which had a defective battery. I didn't think the problem was with the one and a half year-old battery, but it was. It took all night to charge it, and the battery seemed OK for a few days, but went dead again. I then replaced it.

The second time, I used it to charge my van. I inadvertently left the key in the accessory mode, and, when I discovered it, the battery was as dead, and I mean DEAD. It was as if there were no battery hooked-up at all. To my surprise, the unit charged my van in only a few hours. I expected it to take longer.

I, especially, like the added features: Auto Start (doesn't supply current to the battery clips until a battery is properly connected); offers three connector options; no problem if you mistakenly reverse battery connections; automatically detects and corrects a sulfated battery; and does not need to be monitored can be left connected practically forever. It automatically switches over to Maintain Mode.

All-in-all, this is a great little unit, and, because of the reasonable price, should be in everyone's garage waiting for that unexpected moment.

I have owned this model for over three years and have it connected to a pair of golf cart batteries I use for backup power. It has operated 24/7 all this time and the batteries perform like new. Even though this is listed as a trickle charger, it cycles on and off as needed to maintain a float voltage.

I have also connected this to my Watts Up Pro power meter and tracked cost of operation. Maintaining these 220 amp hour batteries cost about 30 cents per month at the .09 cents per kilowatt rate. I don't use this to recharge the batteries after running them down, as it would take far to long. Not sure why they call this Speedcharge, but it would work well for slow charging smaller batteries.

I hook it up to my antique car and the battery is charged all the time. Thought it didn't work when I first bought it because it didn't charge the battery overnight. Takes a while the first time but will keep it charged after that. It was a bargain.

I am writing my review not to describe the product so much (which is great) because the same reviews you just read before mine do that, I bought it because of those reviews. Rather I want to answer 2 questions I had that where not the clearest, or at least answered to my satisfaction.

Yes this works on cars. I plugged in my Lumina sedan that had a failing alternator and it charged the battery up over night. Went from 11.8volts to 12.7volts.

Yes you can charge your car by plugging it into the cig lighter port. As long as your port has constant power! That is, your car off and key out, you still have power there. Leave the charger outside the car though, you never know...

Just wanted to help others who may have had the same concerns I did before I could test it. And oh yes, this thing is tiny! Figure the same footprint of a paperback book.

This Schumacher SC-200A Speedcharge Charger/Maintainer is exactly what I needed. The day it was delivered, I thought the guy had the wrong house because the package was so small I wondered what could this be? Did I forget I ordered something else? I was so ready for disappointment that I did not open the package until 3 days later. I finally said I may as well open it up because it cost too much to return it maybe I can use it for something else. So I took it out of its packaging, set this little box on my kitchen table, and it sat there for a week or more.

Finally, and with my grass needing cutting badly, I took the charger out of the box, read the instructions (so simple and easy), hooked the charger to my riding lawn mower battery, and to make a looong story short IT WORKED !!!!!

This charger is so powerful to be so small!!! Now I don't have to use my SUV to charge my lawnmower battery I have a Schumacher SC-200A Speedcharge Charger/Maintainer, and it is GREAT !!!! My riding lawnmower cranks NOW without being charged. And for extra battery maintenance, I keep the charger connected, at intervals, when I am not using my riding lawnmower.

Great investment !!!!

I got this charger on a whim to try to get my garage a little more organized. As it says, VERY light and easy to mount to the wall, good quality. It's exactly like my other battery charger just more of them. Have it plugged in to the lawn mower and 2 Harley's. Gets a little warm but nothing to be concerned over and is quiet. I'm happy with this G4 charger.

I'm a self-proclaimed organized, neat freak and this is the charging system for my kind. This charger is made to mount to the wall to be out of the way from everything. It was simple to mount and the cords can be kept really well organized. Light and small so doesn't need any extra attention. And depending on how close to the socket you can keep the cord fairly well hidden.

EZOPower 2 USB Port Compact External Portable Rechargeable Emergency Backup Battery Charger 5000mah

EZOPower 2 USB Port Compact External Portable Rechargeable Emergency Backup Battery Charger 5000mah - White

Works great for my EVO, and Nook.

I had troubles at first (My Evo showed it was charging but then would run out of power and die). But I realized through trial and error that you have to turn the battery on first (ie the blue light are lit up), otherwise its not really charging, even if it looks like it is.

The device comes in a white box with no instructions. The first thing you need to know is that you must press and hold the center button for several seconds for the battery to begin charging your devices; same to turn the battery off. This was not obvious; they should have provided some minimal instructions.

Some other minor frustrations:

* The port for charging the device is mini-USB. Micro-USB is the new standard for cell phones and every cell phone charger I have is micro-USB. It would be nice if I could carry around just one cell phone charger and use it for charging my phone and as well as this device.

* The package comes with adapters for every imaginable connector type for use with the two retractable cables they provide, but it only comes with one of each so you have only one micro-USB adapter and every device I own now uses micro-USB. However, you can plug any standard USB cable into the device and just opt to not use the retractable cables they provide..

I'm giving this 4 stars primarily because it's a good value for the price. I'm using it with the HTC EVO 4G and it works well.

I used this battery yesterday to charge my EVO. With the phone on, the flash, and the camcorder recording, it charged my battery from 75% to 98%. It probably would have charged it to 100%, but I unplugged it because I had finished recording.

(The reviewer who said this product did not charge his EVO may want to get it checked out, as I have read that some EVOs have had some charging issues.)

Also, even after charging the night before, and while using it, it only felt very slightly warm, almost completely cold. I have used a similar product from Black & Decker that was bulkier, and it got very hot when charging and during use.

Im my opinion, it is well worth the money, and I will be buying 2 or 3 more soon!

Review after a quick two days of use:

While the raw output voltage may not be strong enough to run some larger devices, I found that it would take my Fuze cell phone on "mifi" mode and stretch its life from the phone battery alone of 1.5 hours to a total of almost 5 hours combined. The $22 spent is well worth it.

My rating is more of a 4.5 based on what you get based on price.

There have been some on here that have complained that their EVO 4G phones continued to drain even though the device was plugged in. I am sure they noticed this especially with power intensive tasks such as Google Navigation.

The reason is not the device itself, but the USB cable. Although the EVO is rated to charge at 1 amp (1000 ma), USB cables are only rated to charge at 500 ma. While plugged into a power source, your EVO continues to run off it's battery. This means that although plugged in, if you battery is charging slower than it is using power, your phone will eventually die. In other words, it's not a "defect" but simply the nature of the beast.

Those who reported their batteries charging fine on their EVO's were likely doing less power intensive tasks such a browsing the web. Google Navigation may be the greatest power vampire on your phone simply because it is 1) constantly scanning for GPS, 2) computing your location, 3) updating the graphical interface, 4) keeping the screen on and 5) talking to you through the audio.

If you find yourself in a low power situation and wish to use Navigation, I recommend that when using Google Navigator, select the "Get Directions" option. No, it won't talk to you, but you won't lose power (and your navigation) half way there either.

iriver AFT 100 Mobile FM Transmitter

iriver AFT 100 Mobile FM Transmitter
  • Mobile FM transmitter for listening to portable audio devices through your car stereo
  • Transmits to all FM frequencies (88.1 to 107.9 MHz)
  • Plugs into standard car power socket--no batteries required
  • Connects to the headphone jack of portable MP3 or CD players; easy-to-read blue LCD display
  • Universal accessory for all digital audio players compatible with a 3.5-mm mini-jack

This little FM modulator actually works well, even in an area with crowded radio spectrum such as San Francisco. Unlike some other modulators by Monster, Belkin, and Griffin, the AFT 100 lets you select ANY frequency, not one of a few factory presets. I simply found an empty frequency on my radio, adjusted the AFT 100 to match, and it sounds great, with no discernable noise or interference. Auto power-off is a nice feature, since I tuck my unit out-of-sight in the armrest.

I use this device with both my iPod Photo and my iRiver IFP-890T. It's convenient and works well. Recommended!

When I bought the iRiver H10 Music player, and I use Yahoo! Unlimited Music, I can figured I could download an unlimited amount of music. Thats great when I am walking to and fro from school, but when I drive, i also wanted that music as well. So I looked around, and the iRiver AFT-100 was the most expensive model

I drive a 04 Mazda RX-8, and it has no tape player, or an auxillary input. The only choice was to use an FM transmitter.

On a good note, it does its job, and it does it relatively well. The audio clarity was really good, and I am an audio buff myself. The only drawback is that it you still can hear some static beneath the music if its quiet. For example, if you play Alicia Key's "If I Aint Got You", her piano introduction is also accompanied by some slight static, but this is when it is a quiet part of the song.

The bad thing is that, well its FM. It isnt going to be as clear as a CD, but if you have no choice...you have no choice. Another drawback is that you have to fiddle with you mp3 player so you can find a good balance of mp3 volume, and your car's volume. Once you find that balance, you'll never touch it again. But one more thing, the bass isnt all that swell, but its something you can probably live with.

SOME HELPFUL TIPS!

-A LOT of people are moaning about the static (I even touched on it above), but the truth of the matter is that if your driving 70 MPH on the freeway, chances are VERY VERY slim that you'll hear static. The car's noise, on top of the road, on top of the rattling that goes on while your driving will eliminate the static noise...TRUST ME!

-A good way to broadcast the music is that I found that if you choose a station that has slight static, and slight music, set that to your fm tunner. I've gotten better results tunning my iRiver to a station that is half and half

-Another thing is that it DOES shut off by itself. This is a smart feature that iRiver implemented because it wont kill your car's batter if you leave it on accedentally. BUT if you, say, get a phone call, and pause your music and more than 30 seconds passed by, the thing will shut off, and then you hear that station that was half static and half music with your car's volume at like 75%...Then you have to unplug it, and plug it back in...a small drawback but it is okay by my book.

-Place it as close to your antenna as possible. Like for my car, my antenna is built into the rear windsheild. When I plugged the iRiver to my second cigarette adapter which is closer to my rear windshield, I got better reception.

-The mp3 player that it is attatched to is the antenna on the device, again, the closer it is to the antenna, the better the quality of the sound

-I tunned it to one station driving from Los Angeles CA, to Orange County CA (Irvine actually), and it worked very, very well. It was 91.9 FM

Listen, if you have a cassete player, then chances are your better off with a Cassete adapter. This iRiver AFT-100 does a really swell job at being an FM tuner, b/c it does have the power to outpower other stations, but remember it is ONLY FM QUALITY...if not a tad lower.

This was an honest review of the AFT-100 and I hope that I have helped.

After trying the Belkin Tunecast, both I and II, I laid out the money for this one -Hooray! It works! I live in a suburb just north of Chicago and drive through 3 'burbs on the way to and from work -radio stations come and go. The IRiver lets me set 3 so as I drive I can switch easily between stations. There is a little static (mainly between tracks), but for a FM transmitter, this is probably the best you can do for the money. For those of us out there without a tape deck in our car, this is the best way to go. (If you do have a tape deck, just get a tape adapter).

The price may seem high in comparison to some other transmitters, but the advantage of being plugged directly into your car (no batteries!) is worth it. Plus, the auto on and off is great. Now, when I want to play my Rio Carbon I just turn it on, plug in the IRiver cord and turn on my radio -easy easy easy.

I am so glad I bought this!

I agree with most reviewers here, that the great features of this device include the ability to have three presets that you can program. Being in Los Angeles, it is easy to switch between the "Valley" or "West LA" as you drive around.

Yet, there is one nagging "feature" of this unit that drives me crazy: The unit turns itself on or off based on the feed from the Line Out of your MP3 device. Now, if you listen to music that has small bits of lower tone (such as a Pink Floyd album or classical pieces) or Vocal recordings, you will find the device will quit temporarily until the volume picks up again and it turns itself back on (which will then spit out evil radio static when a moment of lower tone or "peace" is trying to be accomplished on piece of music or voice. The line connector from the device, which plugs into the MP3 device, also seems of poor quality -sometimes I have to jiggle or twist the cheap connector just to make it engage the device (which has once again turned itself off because it is not receiving a line input). I wish that this automatic turn-on/off based on line feed could be turned on or off -to me, if this feature was not there it would be a great FM transmitting device.

Like all of you, I read the reviews and noted many had problems with poor audio quality.

Some had problems in congested Cities with wall to wall broadcast stations.

I'm a retired Broadcast Engineer so I like to think I have a pretty good ear and my unit works great.

It does have a few quirks worth mentioning and these may contribute to the problems mentioned in the other reviews.

First off, the folks that built this unit opted to use the cord running to the player as the units transmitting antenna. You may find that moving the unit around on the seat of the car can change the strength of the signal being received by your car radio.

This is really a poor arrangement but I'm not sure what can be done about it. I find that I often wrap my MP3 player cord around a compass I have glued to the windshield which is just inches from the FM antenna embedded in the glass. The resulting signal is now strong enough to overcome even some of the very strong local stations.

Very "Rube Goldburg" but effective.

Next is the issue of audio quality.

Seems like these units have no audio limiting or processing.

What you put in is what you get out.

Also it should be noted that most all FM receivers have a maximum bandwidth for each channel.

These little transmitters can exceed the maximum channel width many times over with just a little extra volume on your player.

What makes things complicated is that may of us enjoy a favorite

tone or equalization applied to our tunes.

Internal pre-sets may boost the low and high frequency tones to suit our

tastes but the boosted lows and highs easily pass outside the maximum

bandwidth the receiving radio is equipped to handle.

The result is baaaaadddd distortion.

So, whats the answer?

I set my player for absolute flat audio response. This means that audio going to the I River is the same strength at all tone levels. I've also made sure that I don't color (boost highs and lows) any of my tunes when I record them.

Once the signal gets to my FM radio, however, I can adjust the tone of the unit in the car to suite my tastes.

I also measured the accuracy of the radio signal generated by this little transmitter and found it to be pretty darn close to what was indicated in the window and very stable.

If they wanted to really make this a fabulous device they should install an audio or modulation limiter. I should also mention that too much audio drives the stereo generator a bit nuts and I think they do mention not to run too much signal to the unit.

It would be better if it was automatic, though.

I sure hope this info helps. I tried to loose most of the technical jargon.....I'm still using and enjoying my unit more than a year later.

I have many different vehicles and pieces of motorized equipment. Everything from a 50 ft long motor home with 4 engine starting batteries, to four Harley Davidson motorcycles. The common thread is that they all sit for extended periods of time, and they all have expensive batteries. I have tried all of the different battery maintainers I could find and I still keep coming back to Battery Tender. Aside from the terrific reliability, (not true for other maintainers), the best feature for me is the fact that all you do is plug the Battery Tender in and forget about it. Everything is automatic....this is important if the power fails. Other Battery Maintainers require that one push buttons to set certain parameters. The unfortunate side effect is that the charger will not work without the afore mentioned "button pushing" and your battery may be dead when you need it. Stick with Battery Tender!

My last one lasted 9 years. I have a friend who has a Z which he rarely drives; and during the time I had one battery on my TransAm he replaced his 3 times. After suggesting he get one of these 3 or 4 times with no success I finally bought him one myself.

Amazon's dimension specs for this say that it is almost double the size that it is. The actual correct dimensions are 5.2" L x 5.0" W x 2.0" H. The weight appears to be correct. This error can make a BIG difference if you are planning out the space for it before it arrives.

As far as the product itself goes, nothing but positive things to say. I know several people who use these regularly as well for classic cars that sit in storage and they all rave about them as well. I have been using to charge a marine deep cycle battery that I use to power a power-box for my telescope and equipment. It has worked perfectly and does an excellent job charging and keeping a charge on this when not in use.

I've used Deltran chargers before and they've always been a solid product. However, the discrepancies between their marketing literature and their instruction booklet, and the general way the instruction booklet is written, means that I can only give them a 4 star rating. Their website states, "any capacity lead acid battery." While the instruction booklet states "designed for six-cell. . . 1.2-200Ah," lead acid batteries. Not a big deal for most, but if you're looking for something to charge batteries in parallel (such as in a diesel truck or marine batteries), it would be good to know which info is correct. Which brings me to my next point. There's nothing in the official literature about using this particular charger to charge more than one battery at a time. I can only guess that if the voltage matches and the amps aren't exceeded, it should do just fine. Another issue is that the instructions only give the steps for hooking-up the alligator clips to the battery, however this unit doesn't come with the clips, just the quick-disconnect ring terminals. It would also be beneficial if they matched-up the marketing and instruction booklet technical specs to battery manufacturer specs. So, if the battery manufacturer recommends a max float charge of x, then state what the float charge of the charger is. This is a well built charger and deserves well written literature to go with it.

I bought this as I was getting bored of the radio and my car doesn't have an AUX in or card reader. I loaded up some songs onto an SD card, put it on shuffle and now have my favorite songs with no commercial breaks! Its really simple to set up, you just find an empty radio station, tune it in and away you go. It's a really useful gadget and for the price, I couldn't ask for more.

I was able to successfully read a FAT32 formatted 8GB USB stick in this device, but I returned it for the following reasons:

Unit does not save the last song played. Every time power is interrupted and reapplied playback starts from track 1. I had about 7GB of music to listen to and starting on track 1 every time I started the vehicle was tedious.

Starting on track 1 wouldn't be so bad if random worked but the random function does not work as expected, most of the time I couldn't tell a difference between the "Random" and the "Play All" setting

The unit supports amplification of the source being sent through the FM transmitter but I found that the transmission was too weak to provide a loud enough FM signal..I had to turn the volume up on my car stereo to half way or more on some of the tracks where normally I never use 1/4 volume for direct line-in type sources.

I tried multiple FM frequencies and it still was not as good as a line in cable or another standalone FM transmitter I've used with the same vehicle in the past.

I was initially impressed with the August CR150 Car MP3 Player & FM Transmitter with Card Reader but as time went on became less so. Mainly due to its lack of features. It is not easy to read the display for one thing. And if power is disrupted due to hitting a pothole you have to start from the beginning of the track again. Very annoying when you're listening to an e-book or a lecture. What would be nice is for it to remember where it left off when power is disrupted. A larger display would be nice as well. But it does perform well wrt sending a signal to your radio. Overall, given the price, it serves its purpose pretty well. Just don't hit any potholes while driving.

I only bought this set for the chargers, but it was a plus to have the others.

These are very cheap products, but do what they're supposed to. I have not yet been able to figure out the belt clip, but doubt I would use it anyways.

I don't think they are worth the $25.

If you want an additional Sync Cable and the Charging equipment then this might be a good purchase. The case, armband and belt clip are horrible in my opinion. The case is not configured to the buttons of the player and I had to cut a hole for the earplugs connection because the hole is located on the top of the case instead of the bottom like it is on the player.

Pretty decent products and do what they are supposed to do. I am glad I looked around before getting the same stuff from Sony which could have set me back more than $100 easy. I have taken them around on a few business trips and haven't had a problem. If I had more disposable income, I would probably buy the official accessories with nice design and logo, but for now these do the trick.

I love Sony Products and I will purchase Sony Products again. The player conked out

on me after two weeks of use while it was playing I heard this loud popping sound

and the player never played again.

I never saw the screen because it was just a faint picture , since I had it for the

music to aid me in my walking I could pass on that. The sound was beautiful and I

really enjoyed the two weeks of use.

The company refunded my entire cost in a quick way. I would get another one and give

Sony a second change.

This mounting bracket makes hte installation of EVB22-3PM easy and also allows me to move it with ease. A little pricey for what it is but would not recommend installing the EVB22-3PM without it.

This worked well with the Leviton EVK02 charger that I installed in my garage, my only complaint is that, it is so necessary (the kit) it should be included in the charger itself. I was thinking of just buying the charger and saving the 75 or so on this installation kit but trust me it is almost needed to do a quality installation.

Schumacher SE-125A Automatic / Manual Battery Charger with Engine Start

Schumacher SE-125A Automatic / Manual Battery Charger with Engine Start
  • For use with 6 and 12 Volt Batteries
  • Functions Include - 2 amp trickle charge, 15 amp fast charge and 125 amp engine start
  • This high output, portable starter/charger has both manual operation and fully automatic
  • 2 LED lights signal fully charged and reverse hookup
  • The fully automatic function will not overcharge batteries

I've owned this charger for 5 years. It has a "manual" function, meaning that you can charge a battery past the normal 80% that the automatic chargers will. It means you can also charge one more quickly because the automatic function (also on this unit) of most chargers tapers off the amperage sent to the charger as it reaches 80% of charge. (15 amps also goes faster than ten.) Manual means you can also "condition" a battery to get the sulfites off of the plates, by carefully charging and watching to the point where the battery plates begin to gas off. Means a battery will take and maintain a better charge and last longer. I use it on the RV cabin battery for this, but also use it regularly just for car stuff.

All this and it does what other chargers do. 2 amp trickle charge, high powered capacitor starting function.

I DROVE OVER THIS CHARGER WITH A 5000 POUND 1986 LTD CROWN VICTORIA TODAY! FLAT as a pancake. Ahem, well. First plugged it in and promptly blew the garage circuit breaker. Immediately started hunting for other Schumacher chargers on the net. After spending two hours and seeing this particular unit is now over $100 new, thought "Well, let's see if I somehow tear it apart and look." No sooner got the mangled housing off, and (uuuhhh!!) bent the back upright (which had a circuit board on it), plugged it in, and it works!! And, in the course of bending back the heavy steel housing, NO paint flaked off. Must be baked-on enamel. These babies are built tough. As another reviewer for Schumacher chargers said, "No repackaged imported junk".

I take my hat off to this company: features, durability (!), quality........ wow.

This is, IMHO, a well made battery charger. Works well! (Even with the quirks noted below).

The Good:

1) Has manual and auto modes and therefore will charge a completely dead battery. (Some , if not most, automatic only chargers need a couple volts to prove correct hookup and will not begin charging on a fully dead battery).

2) Heavy duty metal case.

3) Plenty of charging options including 6 volt for, perhaps, charging a single golf cart battery as found in RV and scooter apps as well.

4) Has "OFF" setting on rotary dial. Useful if using the 125 Amp start setting which has recommended max 5 sec duration per instructions.

5) Charges 12 volt batteries very, very well. (Have not tested on 6 volt)

The BAD:

1) Has poor rotary switch layout. Requires (most of the time) when switching to off or from 2A to 15A setting to cycle through the 125amp setting. This causes unnecessary stress on the battery and the charger. To avoid this one must unplug when changing setting.

2) Poorly written instructions regarding the use of the rotary switch vs the slide switch. Inst manual is generic for many of their chargers and not specific for this model.

3) Amp gauge on front of charger does not read in amps, but % of battery charge. Great for girls and girly guys, but not for the guys who have lawn tractors, boats, ATV's, etc. and really want to know what is going on at a glance.

4) Feet are molded from the metal case and do not have protective rubber pads to prevent marring and skiding.

The "who cares":

1) Has green LED which lights when battery is fully charged in 15 amp automatic mode. Does not work in 2 amp mode where it might actually be useful.

I had an older Schumacher that only had a 50 amp emergency boost, which was inadequate for most emergencies, so when that disappeared, I bought this SE-125A. I left it on the 2 amp charger setting for awhile on my Porsche's 12v battery while it was still connected in the car. It fully charged it and as stated in the owner's manual, when set on the 2 amp charge, the green light will not light when the battery is fully charged. The 15 amp, 12v automatic setting will turn on the green light when the battery is charged, but I wouldn't leave it like this for too long. I looked at the meter and the green light was lit, then the charger would stop charging with the meter falling off to the right. At the same time the green light would shut off, but then the meter would swing back to the left (charging again) and the green light would go on. This cycle took about 5 seconds to complete. After watching this happen many times over a period of 2 minutes, I unplugged it, feeling that can't be good for the Schumacher's longevity. It does the job and the price is right. The cord attached to the unit is relatively short, so you'll need a high quality 3-pronged extension cord if you want to use this charger while the battery is still connected in your vehicle.

I've owned this about two years and its worked flawlessly. Its been used to keep three vehicles, three tractors, and two lawn mowers going through all the Minnesota seasons. I like the fact that it has an "off" setting. Its been very versatile and holds up well to fairly rough treatment. Would definitely buy again.

EDIT 5/27/11:

Very shortly after writing this glowing review, my unit seems to have died. I needed to jump a battery and pulled out the charger and let it charge for the normal amount of time. But battery was still dead. Repeated this process a few times and decided it wasn't the battery, must be something wrong with the truck, which is admittedly fairly old. Then noticed I wasn't getting a decent spark when i touched the positive and negative connectors together. Pulled out very old and frail charger that was nearly junked when I bought this Schumacher and it charged up the battery just fine. Upon further review, it appears that my Schumacher charger works only when in Manual setting, and does nothing when in automatic. I expect this sort of product to last more than two years.

I bought it for the long plane trips where power was not available. It worked just like plugging in the wall at home. Very cool. So I keep it in my laptop bag for emergency device recharge.

This charger has saved me a few times. It's not for a prolonged use if your battery runs low but it will serve as an effective safe hold until you make it to a charger. I have a droid and it nevery completely charges it but it gives me enough charge to help me continue shopping and them make it back to my car for a quick charge. It's a matter of how much charge you will need if your battery is running low. I use it also on my class nights and it holds me through my lecture and I can usually make it back to my car without having to charge. I would recommend this product.

The jumpstarter was purchased because my car failed to start on its own one very cold morning. It arrived within two days, and I haven't had to use it personally however my neighbors car did the same and I lent it to him he started first try. Since then we've had power problem outages and I've used the light and battery power to run my laptop and printer. throught the usb port. So far the best buy in the worst winter we've had since 1993.

Bought on of these for my wife in February and we love it. We have used it several times and the air compressor once. The air compressor really came in handy to get the tire blown up more than enough to get it to the tire shop with no problem. Now, I am buying one for myself
