Goal Zero 11102 Sherpa 120 Battery

Goal Zero 11102 Sherpa 120 Battery
  • 120-watt hours of power pack storage capacity; chain up to three additional Sherpa power packs
  • Integrated charge controller protects internal battery and connected devices from burnout and electrical spikes; tested and certified by FCC and CE
  • Powers a variety of USB, DC, and AC devices; compatible with Sherpa UI - Universal Inverter for 100 watt AC output
  • Powered by Goal Zero LiFe batteries that are rated for 2,000 to 3,000 cycles
  • Rugged and weather resistant to protect against the elements

This is a superbly designed and built product, at least from the couple of days I've had it. I'll update the review if my impressions change.

One thing I want to mention right away: the power pack itself is only 2.2 pounds in weight. For some reason various sources of this information show anywhere between 4 and 5 pounds. All the other accessories that come in the box are lightweight as well. The included AC adapter with cords is very lightweight and small and the 12V cigarette plug is as well. Too often we find that the main object of interest, like a laptop for example, has an attractive weight specified but comes with a massive AC brick and cables that weigh as much as the thing itself. Not so here.

Physically, however, the Sherpa 120 is quite a big thing, about the size of a Webster's dictionary (if any of you remember those :-) or a really big Fodor's travel book. Make sure this meets your needs. It is not a petite device.

So far I have used the power pack to test out running a ResMed S9 CPAP machine (CPAP only, not humidifier/heater) with an inverter, and it powers it successfully for a full 8 hours on a full charge. That pretty much meets the 120 watt-hour spec, as the machine averages around 15 watts (including loss in the inverter and S9's AC adapter). A full charge from AC takes 4 hours as specified. Construction quality is first rate.

Only one issue so far: there is no indication of how to charge the power pack from a 12V source, although that charging method is given in the specifications. The charging plug is labeled as needing 15.3V. I will have to hunt down how to do that. I would have appreciated a 12V plug cable for charging in the box.

A potential issue is how TSA treats this. This device qualifies as a "larger" spare lithium ion battery and, judging by the watt-hour rating, has about 10 grams of equivalent lithium content (ELC) -. This is perfectly acceptable as a carry on according to DOT guidelines (see -up to two such "spare" batteries with ELC up to 25 grams may be in carry-on luggage; cannot be in checked luggage). But the particular TSA inspector at a given gate on a given day may have other ideas.

UPDATE: To charge this device from 12VDC source, you have to buy a separate adapter: a male cigarette to 4.7mm adapter, from Goalzero.com. It's $15 so not too bad. Also I'm not sure why Amazon had to delete the links I put in the main review -they were to dot.gov web pages showing info about FAA treatment of li-ion batteries.

FURTHER UPDATE (7/14/11): Just back from a 3-week African trip which was the reason for buying this battery in the first place, to power my CPAP machine when we did not have electricity available at night. It worked perfectly and TSA as well as foreign airline security inspections never even looked at it. Total non-issue. I even used it on the plane to power the machine (clear this ahead of time with the airline though).

This review is for the Goal Zero Sherpa 120 battery Goal Zero Sherpa 120 Battery.

I bought this battery to use on a backwoods trip to run a CPAP machine while I sleep. Since this would be running a medical device, I felt it was important to know I could trust the system. I carefully measured (using a Kill-a-Watt) the power my CPAP was consuming and knew that in good conditions the battery as found in the Sherpa 120 should last nearly 3 nights, so the solar panels wouldn't need to fully charge the system in a single day. I have also measured the CPAP (using a Watts-Up) when running directly from 12v and it consumes about 30 watts a night (vs 37watts a night on 120v).

In field testing and subsequent follow up this is how I would rate the battery. The battery nicely holds a good charge and delivers the full capacity before going into a sleep state to protect itself from over discharging. I used the Nomad 27 solar panels to charge it and found that given my needs they were plenty large enough to top it off every day. To protect the battery which is a very key component to the system (in fact the one piece you must have), spend the extra few bucks on the silicone protective cover.

The battery holds as much power as advertised, I've measured it several times and it continues to perform well. The Goal Zero system connects and works well. The only plug that seems slightly loose is the output plug on the battery. The other connectors are nice and sufficient. The output one should snap to give you extra security that your device will remain powered. For portable operation focus on using 12v loads directly and make sure you are running your necessary equipment as efficiently as possible to maximize your run times. If you can get away without using an inverter, all of your devices will run longer from a fixed battery capacity, plus your weight will be physically lighter.

One important thing to note, if you leave the battery unattended for 30 days or more, it goes into a deep sleep even shutting down the display and internal circuits (to conserve power). When you turn it on again it'll appear discharged (the screen shows only 1 bar) but it really is holding the charge well. You can measure with a Watts-Up to see the voltage, but the logic they use to calculate how much charge remains needs to know the last total charge and it can't know that until you recharge it. If you plug it into the solar or wall charger for a bit (~20 min if was off for 30 days) it'll snap back and realize that it's actually fully charged. Tip: If you have a system and want to see what this deep sleep state looks like, you can simulate this for yourself by removing and then replacing the fuse on the back of the unit.

In the posted pictures my battery has a Silicone sleeve to protect it. I highly recommend buying the sleeve to protect your battery. Goal Zero 91105 Black Small Silicone Sleeve for Sherpa 120

*** Update: July 2,2012 I've used this battery on dozens of trips, camping, canoe trips, even a dive trip (on the boat) and it continues to work great. I've found I use the USB port often now to recharge my additional devices (cell phone, GoPro camera etc). This has been a very dependable battery and I'm glad I have it. This battery along with my 12v charger and solar panels gives me great freedom while maintaining power in the field.

To start let me tell you.......I love this product......it work better then I thought it would.......seems like it takes forever to have to recharge it.......that all being said.....the third time I recharged it.... the battery had a melt down......know I didnt send in my warrenty card and thats my fault....I dont hold this against the company....but after it had its melt down I got to looking on the web.....and found that many people have had the same probelm with these batterys.......know if they are melting down cause of a defect in the product....I think the company should replace the battery with or without the warrenty card......so needless to say I wont be wasting another 300 bucks on this battery........

You might get lucky and get one that doesnt melt down and I can tell you......your going to love it....if it works.......just send in your warrenty card.......everything I have read on the web says they good about replacing.......

Quick Update......8-11-12........I see that goal zero doesnt make these anymore....atleast they are no longer on there website......Guess enough people complained about them they just stopped making them.

I own the Nomad 27, Sherpa 120, Sherpa UI and Light-A-Life. Have been using the power pack to charge my phone (Galaxy Note) and power the lamp (Light-A-Life) during camping, can't seems to be able to empty the pack. I even use it to power my digital alarm clock, lamp and charge my phone at home at the same time. This pack can also recharge laptop. So far this is the best solar product I've found! Now waiting to save up enough $ to get the second set for the other rooms.

  • One-year limited warranty

I got the kvt-512 along with the kna-510 installed in my 06 TSX. So far, all is good and no real complaint. The unit is loaded with features and options so what you can do with it is limitless. I have this unit connect through my factory head unit but the sound is still pretty good. The dvd is nice and clear and the navi works great. The touch screen is very responsive as well. I really like the fact that it plays mp3s off of a dvd. It is also convenient that it comes with a usb port to play mp3s off of. You can buy a ipod adaptor but why when you can get a cheap usb drive to play your music out of. I have it connected to a 8 gig thumb drive(bought for like $15) that I perminantly keep on there since it is plenty to hold all of my music.

You have to touch the screen on a unmarked location to activate the menu control options which is something I need to get used to. So far...I am definitely enjoying my new toy.

HQRP 6W Mono-crystalline Solar Panel 6 Watt w/ Solid Aluminium Frame (Size of 5 Watt / 5W) 12 Volt 5

HQRP 6W Mono-crystalline Solar Panel 6 Watt w/ Solid Aluminium Frame 12 Volt 5 Years Limited Power WarrantyThis product is being used on our fishing boat in the St. Lawrence river. We damaged our last panel and needed a replacement for our batteries. While the old unit was rated at 5 watts this new one has a rating of 8 watts which we needed as we are now keeping 2 batteries charged with the same panel. After 3 weeks of storms and weather the batteries had full voltage and charge despite running a bilge pump to keep the boat dry, (the boat does not have a weather cover). We are so pleased with this solar panel that we are going to be purshasing another one for the boat to keep battery number 3 charged. The small size made it easy to mount on the radar arch and most people don't know it's there. The only improvement I can see for this unit is a more streamlined frame to mount the panel in, but that is just cosmetic.

Thanks for a great product at an attractive price, David J.

This is a nice 6W solar panel, works great chargeing a small 8ah and 5ah sla battery. But you want to use a charge controller because it will over charge small batteries, or watch your voltage very close and you millamps so you can unhook it when the battery gets charged, I made my own controller. Being a Amateur radio operator it seems to keep my battery up while I operate my radio at QRP power. Will probably get another one soon. It even works good on a partly cloudly day, powered a small water pump.

Needs good direct sun to put out decent wattage. Even covering 20% of the cell creates a serious drawdown of power. But if you have a good sunny location, this is a great low watt cell for your project. Mine is going to be running 2 12v case fans for a solar powered heater.

Bluetooth Handsfree In-car Visor Kit for All Samsung Phones

Bluetooth Handsfree In-car Visor Kit for All Samsung PhonesI bought this mostly for work. I drive around as a service tech and get calls on the road quite a bit. Considering I have two phones, one bussiness and one personal, this works great because I can sync both phones to it!! It states to have an 8 hour talk time which works great for a busy day or lenghty call while on the road. So for 24 buck this is perfect! The speaker is loud enough to hear, and I have no problems people hearing me on the other end. The only negative I can think of is that the connection for charging isn't the mirco USB my phones and most things are. Its slightly larger, but the end that plugs into the 12v outlet does detach for a standard USB, so it can plug right in with the dual charger I use. I love it for what I need!!!

Even though I originally brought the device for myself. I gave it to my daughter who fell in love with it. Her boyfriend wanted one for himself, so I ordered a second one.

Schumacher IP-1825FL Instant Power with Adjustable Work Light

Schumacher IP-1825FL Instant Power with Adjustable Work Light
  • 12 volt DC power source with adjustable work light
  • #6 gauge, 28 inch cable stays flexible in cold weather
  • Convenient, built-in charger transformer for automatic charging of internal battery
  • Easy-to-read battery status LEDs display full power, 75 percent charged or 50 percent or less
  • Durable, rust and corrosion-proof, polypropylene case resists fuels as well as solvents

The device took a really long time (20+ hours) to charge for the first time. I have only used it 4 or 5 times in the last year, and generally had to charge it before and then charged afterwards hoping that it would be ready the next time I needed it. I didn't use it for about two months and tried to charge it and it shows the charged and charging light on and it will not hold a charge.

Unless you plan on scheduling when your car is going to need a jump or can wait for endless charge times every time your battery goes dead I would advise to stay away from this product.

This is a great jump starter. However, it seems to take forever to attain a full charge (couple of days!). My first experience with these devices. Tried it new out of box and got nothing. After a day nothing. But after a couple of days SUCCESS in getting my old Bobcat skid steer loader with a bad battery and corroded leads to actually start. Now I am a believer!

I don't understand why all the hate for this nice battery. First of all, it clearly says that it requires 36 hours to charge it the first time. So ignore that complaint when reading the reviews.

This is a 18 AH sealed lead-acid battery. It will discharge over time. The instructions say to charge it every three months. It also needs to be charged after every use. Always keep the battery fully charged.

I went on a trip and used this three times to start my car last weekend. I did not charge it between uses, either. I used it again to start my kid's car last night. I am very happy with this product.

I bought this item last night. I charged it (17 hours) until the light turned green. We followed the instructions and nothing happened except for some sparks when I put the black terminal on to a metal part. I am unsure if we need to turn the jumper on. There is a red power button and a reset button that is not even explained in the manual. I will be getting a refund for this product.

Instapark® NEW All Black 15W Mono-crystalline Solar Panel

Instapark® NEW All Black 15W Mono-crystalline Solar PanelI mostly agree with the previous review except for one thing the battery issue. I bought the best deep-cycle marine battery ($70 at WalMart) and I am pleased with the results. I drained the battery intentionally and this little 15W panel fully charged it in 4 days (I'm in So Cal). I have a patio room that has my boom-box and a 4 strings of white holiday lights (non-LED) that run off the battery with an inverter. I also charge all my small electronic devices from it. Most days the battery is full as the sun sets. And I have become very conscious to turn off the music and lights when I leave the room to conserve power.

I built a box that houses the battery and mounted the charge controller and inverter on the outside. I am going to add a 2nd panel soon and change the holiday lights to the LED ones (brighter and lower power). Then I'll charge my laptop and power tool batteries from it overnight and keep adding other devices to it and when I need to I'll add another panel and/or another battery.

I consider this a fun experiment that is easy to expand upon and one that has proved to me that solar is the future.

I bought this solar panel to keep my gate openers' 2 12v 7amp-hour batteries charged. I have the mighty mule two-leaf gate opener (from home depot, FM402) and the instructions say you need at least 10 watts of solar to maintain the batteries. Well Mighty Mule's $130 solar panel only generates 5 watts, so you supposedly need two of them to do the job. Keep in mind these specs are rated for dozens (75+) of gate cycles a day.. At my place, the gate cycles 10 times a day MAX (usually more like 4-6) so I really didnt need that much wattage. ANYWAYS I ran the gates on batteries alone (I installed the second optional battery) for a couple of weeks, 10+ cycles per day (lots of adjusting, and testing) and it ran fine. Voltage dropped from 12.5v to 11.5v after approximately 2 weeks which is when I received the solar panel. I installed it and after one sunny day (san diego), the batteries were topped off, back up at 12.5v. So I am pretty confident that the system is going to be reliable even thru winter and low-sun months. The solar panel is well made, and sturdy. For the money, I dont think you can find a better product. Based on the power output, the very SMALL size of the panel, and the LOW price, I dont think you can do any better. I would not hesitate to buy another one, in fact I plan on experimenting with solar for some more projects around my place in the near future. The mighty mule electronics have "solar" inputs built into the board, so there was no need for a charging controller or any kind of regulator. The panel seemed to put out about 20v (meter connected directly to the panel) so keep in mind you cannot just connect it right to a battery.

Buy Instapark® NEW All Black 15W Mono-crystalline Solar Panel Now

I recently purchased the Instapark 15 Watt solar panel. I was expecting a bit more quality than I received. From the outside, the panel itself looks fairly well made. The mono-crystalline cells appeared to be sealed correctly under tampered glass. I did not care for the wires that were initially supplied with the panel. Therefore, I wanted to connect my own custom cables (12 AWG) to the panel. The ring terminal connectors on my wiring looked like they would work out fine. However, when I attempted to remove the existing wiring from the terminal block inside the junction box (by unscrewing the wire terminals on the panel), the connection point to one of the terminals physically broke apart -not good! I did not force the connection apart either. It just snapped off as I was unscrewing the terminal (it was the positive terminal). I determined that it was a weak solder point. Also, the junction box that houses the terminal block was covered with dried solder flux. The bottom line, this product looks good from the outside, but is extremely cheaply made on the inside. If you are trying to connect your own wiring directly to terminals, I would advise you not to purchase this product. However, if you are just going to either use wire nuts or crimp ring terminals or SAE connectors to the existing wiring, then you should be OK. I never did get the panel to operate correctly. So, I returned it to Amazon and received a full refund. One great thing about Amazon is the outstanding customer service. Never a problem with any customer service issues. Because of my solar project needs, I will likely never buy another instapark product again.

In my neck o' the woods, sealed AGM batteries go for $80 to $100+. Money doesn't grow on any of the trees in my neighborhood, so I look for bargains and that usually means checking Amazon first. I was delighted to find this battery for only $66, and with free shipping to boot! I ordered late Thursday afternoon and the package arrived on the following Monday via Priority Mail. I call that excellent service. The battery came with no specific information on cranking amps or any other specifications, but I figure any YTX20HL-BS size battery will meet the minimum requirements of the motorcycles it is intended to fit, so I'm not worried about it. I hooked the battery up to my Battery Tender before installing it to insure a full charge starting out. It took about 6 hours to reach full charge (this is with a Battery Tender, not a battery charger). After installation, the bike started strongly and ran more smoothly than before (this motorcycle has computerized EFI and is very much voltage-sensitive) so output is obviously fine. Chrome Battery offers a no-questions-asked warranty, so no worries if you do happen to get a dud. I recently replaced the battery in my wife's motorcycle and paid about $90. I wish I had found Chrome Battery before laying out that much money. Now I know better.

  • 36" long-reach hose with spring guard
  • One hour fast charger rapidly charges the 3.0 amp batteries.

My first cordless electric grease gun was a Lincoln. It was a 14.4 volt ni-cad. It was way better than hand pumping grease. I run heavy equipment, front end loaders and excavators in sometimes frigid temperatures (Denver). I had to have 2 batteries. It was disapointing how quickly the batteries wore down, and how long it took to charge them up. I ruined the gun by running it down til the batteries wouldn't turn it over anymore. Then I got a great deal on a Lincoln 12 volt ni-cad grease gun. I learned not to run it till the batteries were dead. It lasted me a couple of years, but battery life was always a disapointment. Then I got a PowerLuber brand grease gun, again ni-cads and disapointing. It only lasted about a year. This Lincoln 18 volt Li-ion grease gun is fabulous. It is light years ahead of anything I have ever used. It seems to run forever on a charge, and it has undercharge protection, so you won't burn up the motor if you try to hit those last 2 zerks when the battery is too low. It is unbelievable how great it is to be able to see how much battery life you have left at any time, and be able to "top off" the charge before a big greasing event ( no battery memory issues). It is nice to know at a glance how much grease is left in the gun, too. THIS IS THE BEST EVER GREASE GUN!

MPPT Tracer 2215RN EP Solar Charge Controller Regulators 20A + Remote Meter LCD Display (MT5) for So

  • Peak conversion efficiency of 97 %; High Tracking efficiency of 99%; Several seconds tracking speed;
  • Very fast Sweeping of the entire I-V curve; 4- Stage charge with PWM output; Temperature compensation function?
  • Full power output in ambient temperatures up to 45 degree; Sealed, Gel, Flooded battery type optional; ON/OFF, Dusk to dawn, 1-15h timer?
  • Diversified load control: Manual, Dusk to Dawn, Dual timer, TEST;

You may find cheaper MPPT charge controllers on Amazon but read the specs and the reviews carefully. Some are ordinary controllers that somehow have been allowed to be advertised as MPPT. This one does what it says and is great for small scale experimental solar projects like the one I'm building. I especially wanted one with a display to easily monitor the parameters and what was going into the batteries without having to be measuring with my multimeter all the time. With the proper gauge wire, fuses etc. this unit (fed by a 100W monocrystalline panel which was doubled to 200W last night) keeps 180aH of batteries charged after an overnight drain running my multiple-tank aquarium set-up (25-125W, 0.25 1.7A draw through a pure sine wave inverter). My old PWM controller used to choke during peak hours (10am 2pm) and default to float mode here in the tropics (10 degrees north latitude). The Tracer keeps going all day and harvesting all the power that the other charge controller just wasted even with the efficiency drop due to panel heating.

If you've been fooling around with solar power long enough like me, this one was a breeze to set up. My only regret was not getting the larger 30A unit but I am gaining enough data to spec out a much larger system. MPPT is the way to go even with "low powered" systems like mine. I've read some comments suggesting MPPT is more useful for over 400W but for my situation with low loads, high solar intensity, high temperatures, overcast but bright, light to heavy rain about mid day to cool panels and other tropical features, this is the sweet spot for MPPT.

This one is a high quality product. The length, weight and the gauge are just right for our need.

The bag is definitely a plus. It can be stored in the car easily without the cable tangling other

things. The clamps/teeth are well approximated and hold without slipping.

A good product in my opinion.

Box has a Proposition 65 warning on the back stating:

"This product contains chemicals, including lead, known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling."

Amazon makes no mention of this on the items product page.

Who always has access to a sink after using jumper cables? What do you do when you're giving someone a jump on the side of the road, or in a parking lot?

Returned for a full refund.

I am curious however, since the product has lead and Amazon ships to California, are they not required to post this information on the product page per Prop 65?

  • These mounts fit handlebar diameters up to one inch. We include a rubber fitting for smaller handlebars at no additional charge.
  • We also include a hardwire power adapter that will fit the back of your GPS

I have both of these items, and they work as promised. I first mounted it on to a Kawasaki ER-6n motorcycle and it worked fine. The suspension was pretty smooth. But later this summer, I traded that in for a Harley Sportster 883 Iron. I mounted the power supply and ran the wires easy as pie. Then I mounted the GPS holder to the handlebars. If you know anything about Harley Sportsters, they aren't known for their plush ride. It rides rough, and the handlebars vibrate a lot, but the mount held up just fine. If it can handle that, it can handle anything.

I bought this for my motorcycle handlebars and it worked great for about four rides then broke between the swivel ball and bar clamp. Now i purchased a RAM mount and it works much better, far more robust design.

Orange Electronic SC36AA Tire Pressure Sensor

Orange Electronic SC36AA Tire Pressure Sensor
  • Includes a lithium ion battery
  • Projected 5 to 7 year battery life
  • Displays tire pressure
  • Ergonomic Design

I have a 2008 PT Cruiser and had two valve stems break on the original equipment Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors (TPMS). The original Daimler Chrysler product number is 56053030AC manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors product number 425OA225. This is a 315 MHz TPMS. The previous Chrysler/Dodge Product number is 68001696AA.

The Orange Electronic SC36AA Tire Pressure Sensor has excellent quality and fit perfectly. My local tire store installed them for $7 per tire. Once installed, the low tire pressure light turned off as I was driving home from the store. I shopped around and found other brands at my local auto parts store for double the price $65.00. If you ask the tire store to get the part and install it, it may cost you 4 times the cost $125.00. Happy driving!!

I bought this pressure monitor with a lot of reluctance. I mean I was not sure if the unit was going to syncronize with the factory installed pressure monitoring system on my 2006 Town and Country Touring mini-van. I have to say that I was uneasy after I left the tire shop because the low pressure light on the dash board was still lit. But after driving off and about three miles into my trip, the low pressure light turned off. I have had no problem with this unit. You can't beat the price. I priced the unit through my local Chrysler dealer. Trust me, you don't want to know.

My 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been progressively breaking the poor quality factory TPMS valves. Bought this because of good reviews here at Amazon, but wanted to see how one worked before getting anymore. Appears more robust and weather resistant than original. Sync'ed up and cleared TPMS warning light within two miles of leaving tire center, holds pressure well, so I'll be ordering more to fix the whole vehicle.

GREAT PRODUCT!!! I checked around at different places to have some sensors installed. GOODYEAR wanted almost $250 to install 1 sensor!!! I bought 2 of these for less than $100 and a good friend of mine installed them for me. Less than 5 miles after installing them, the tire pressure turned off and it's been fine ever since. I highly recommend these. They worked right out of the box for me. My friend advised me that there could be the possibility that I would have to have these programmed by a tire shop but I guess i got lucky. Fast delivery!!
