It is a nice long extension cable, but it takes a lot longer to charge the battery with it. It does allow you to have the battery quite a ways from the solar panel.

The reason for this update was to remove a star from my rating (three stars down from four) based on the price of this unit (currently $99). Comparable units with a similar size, weight and even higher capacity are down to as little as $25. I simply cannot justify the price of this unit in comparison.

This device proved itself to be very useful and showed that it works quite well. I charged it as the instructions say for 8 hours before first use, and then it takes about 3 hours to charge after that. It has 4 blue LEDs on it that blink and when all 4 are solid that indicates a full charge. As it decreases the amount of lit LEDs drop so you are always aware of how much charge the device is holding. This is a good indication function. It is charged by using the AC power cord that comes with it, and it also has 2 USB cables with different size ends on them for use on devices that have different sized charging inputs on them.I took it with me when I was out with my 2 nephews when they visited. One of them has a Metro PCS phone that he texts constantly on, and the other has an iPod that is attached to him at all times. I was able to use the Belkin 4000 to not only recharge both those devices but my Kodak Easy Share M580 digital camera as well during our day out. Now the devices were not at total dead battery, but very low, and the Belkin boosted them all up for use for the entire day. Having this saved the trouble of needing 3 separate power cords and use of an AC outlet. Also the Belkin has 2 USB charging outputs so you can charge 2 separate devices at the same time, which is also a plus as this eliminated them fighting over who was gonna get their device charged first and who would have to wait. Not having to listen to 2 teenagers fighting is a blessing in itself.
Also the size of the device is good, it is small enough to travel easily yet not so small it can be misplaced by accident.
The only reason I didn't give this product a 5 star rating is due to the fact that the AC power adapter that is used to charge the device is much larger than it needs to be and the design of it is not great. A 12 volt DC charger can be made much smaller, and also the charger has what is called a 'barrel connector' that slides onto the AC device that actually has the prongs on it that allow it to plug into the wall. It is my opinion this extra piece is not needed, the AC adapter should have prongs on it like a regular plug and not need a small slide on attachment that can get lost or damaged making the cord useless. Also the price for the device is a little high. However, Belkin makes quality products and maybe the higher price compared to others is due to the fact it works better and holds a charge longer than the cheaper models similar to it. This I am not sure of.
I find this to be a very useful device, and great for the person who might need to recharge something while not near a power source or without the cable at the time.

I was recently gifted an iPod Touch which I soon discovered drains its battery fairly quickly. So it was perfect timing when I was able to snag one of these a few days later. On the packaging it claims to provide 4 cell phone charges or 2 smart phone charges. Here are the results I got:1) iPod Touch charged from 20%->100%
2) iPod Nano charged from 0%->100%
3) iPod Touch charged from 0%->100%
4) iPod Touch charged from 15%->50%
At that point the Power Pack finally ran out of juice. So it does deliver as promised.
It's very compact, only marginally bigger than an iPhone 4. That makes it ideal for tossing into a backpack and carrying around for spare power. It has a nice black matted finish. I forgot to time it exactly, but it took roughly 3 hours to fully charge. As another reviewer noted, the power adapter is pretty large. It has a simple 4 led display which displays the power level. It's usually best to press the reset button when plugging in a device for charging. Sometimes it starts charging as soon as I plug in a device, other times I need to press the button first.
The one downside is that it is rather expensive compared to the competition. I haven't tried other brands, but there are alternatives that have very high ratings and cost significantly less. If it were priced more competitively, I would definitely give it 5-stars.

I've noticed that the LEDs which indicate battery power aren't real accurate when the device is in use. When I plug in my iPod I often get 3-4 bars, indicating it is mostly full. But then it dies relatively soon. When I plug it back in to recharge, it shows it is charging from 1 bar, indicating I had drained it completely. This doesn't affect the runtime as it still seems to be giving me the appropriate amount of charge, I just can't depend on the indicator to accurately reflect the amount of power left.

Conceptually, this is a great idea. However, it has a non-standard connector for the power supply -which means if you have an iPod, an iPhone, an Android device, a MiFi, an iPad, a digital camera, an ebook reader -all with their own unique power cord, you have to make room for YET ANOTHER cord on your charging table.The smaller version Belkin Portable Power Pack 2000 for Tablet, Smartphone, and more uses the same micro USB connector to charge so even if you have the SAME Type of product from Belkin that is designed to perform essentially the same function, you still need TWO different power supplies.

Update "Power Pack Saves the day!" On a recent trip with 3 changes of planes, my iPhone conked out. I hooked it up to the Power Pack, and it almost immediately re-charged the iPhone battery. Up until now, I've been using it as a supplemental power source, but it works wonders as an almost-instant charger.While airports are getting better about having charging stations for portable devices; trains are not. A trip to NYC for me involves a drive to New Haven and a ride on Metro North to Grand Central. From there I usually walk to my destination as long as it's no further than a mile or so. Often, my trip involves both my iPhone and MacBook Pro. On the train, I can both work on my computer and listen to music on my iPhone with both plugged into or recharged with my Belkin Power Pack. I have run out of battery power before I got the Belkin just listening to music on my iPhone. If the trip involves the use of my computer in a presentation in NYC, I can still do touch-ups and practice runs on the train ride in.
Now that airlines have very few amenities, like new movies, I can either take a NetFlix DVD or download a flick from iTunes to my MacBook for in-flight entertainment. DVDs really drain batteries since they require a mechanical movement; so I'd probably opt for an iTunes rental for $4 or $5. On a X-country or overseas flight, I can keep the flight short by enough movies to fill in my time from take-off to touchdown. Likewise, if I want I can plug in my computer to the Belkin and my iPhone into the computer.
Of the features on the Belkin F8M160 Power Pack 4000, I like the LCD lights the best. Once my phone and computer start getting low on battery power, I can easily see how many of the 4 LCD lights are lit. All four indicate full power and one light means I'd better get to a charging station. On even a short layover to change planes, the Belkin can fire up pretty quickly. It took about 15 minutes to initially to bring it to full power out of the box. My second favorite feature is the dual ports for simultaneously using/recharging my computer and phone. If my wife wants to re-charge as well, I can always use the two ports on the Belkin and a USB port on the computer to run everything at once.
I put the power pack in my computer case, along with the recharging cables and adapters--and the computer itself. I'm not crazy about the big fat AC/DC Power Supply Adapter, and I'd like a smaller, lighter one. However, the Power Pack itself is pretty light, and with the whole kit, it fits nicely into my computer case. So, I'm very happy with it so far and looking forward to my next trip to the City.

We bought this item so that we could use our laptop in the car and also to be able to plug in more items in our RV. I like that it has two outlets.Some people have said it was "loud" but I didn't understand that at all. Yes, there is a quiet "whirring" sound from the fan, but if you're driving down a highway or have the radio on low, you'd never hear the fan.
I think it was a good purchase. Worth the money and I'd recommend it to a friend.

This Belkin inverter is much louder than the 140 watt inverter (which is difficult to hear at all). You can easily drowned out the noise with your radio but the pitch was a little too high for me.The 300 watt unit is only a little bigger with a second outlet than the 140 watt inverter. It comes with an automotive type fuse (30 amp) which does seem to be very useful if your car lighter fuse is 10 or 15 amp.

I have had this unit for over a year and am very pleased. I use it for my laptop and Direct TV while we travel. I must be getting deaf because I do not notice any loud noise. You have to darn near have your ear close to it just to hear the fan running. This inverter has not given me any problems what so ever. Worked great for me on a recent trip to Florida. Only used one of the two outlets to recharge my laptop computer battery. Fast and efficient recharge--way cheaper than buying an extra battery and performed flawlessly. Some reviewers thought it was loud, but I could barely hear any noise at all, just a very low fan noise, which is necessary to cool the inverter. As far as installation goes, I would recommend using a fuse tap (such as an add-a-circuit) from and auto parts store so that the converter box in the line doesn't drain the battery if you don't ride for a while. You may find, however that your fuse circuit is still hot because you may have relays on your fuse box, in that case, I would recommend installing a switch with the hot wire running into the fuse tap so that all you need to do is flip the switch off and the converter box will not use up your battery.
I don't think the converter box uses up that much power, but if it is directly connected to your battery (or you have the fuse tap in a hot circuit ((by hot circuit, I mean that it is getting power even with the ignition off)) ), the converter box IS using power constantly, so that is why i recommend using a switch or a fuse tap to a switched circuit (meaning a circuit that is not receiving power when the ignition is off).
Make sure you ground everything you install, or it won't work, and make sure every new line has a fuse (why i recommend the fuse tap).
You will have to ground the converter box or the setup will not work. If you use a switch with an LED indicator on it, you will also have to ground the switch if you want the LED to work, but not grounding the switch should not impact the setup's functionality as long as the converter box is grounded (speaking from logic, not experience).
If you have any question for motorcycle install, feel free to ask... I know how difficult it can be to find answers to these questions, but fortunately i found a setup that worked for me and my dad.Nice cable for direct wire up of the Garmin Nuvi. The only awkward part is the fact that the step down transformer (black egg looking thing) is only 2 feet from the plug that goes into the Nuvi. That makes it hard to hide the cable from view. It has a small led to let you know that it is connected to power and that seems to draw a small amount of current even when not plugged into the Nuvi. Keep that in mind if current drain is a concern.A note inside the packaging for this unit says the following: "Thank you for the purchase of the Gilsson Direct Wire Cable. Please be sure to test our Direct Wire Cable with your GPS to ensure it does not go into PC Charge Mode while connected to the power source. In certain ISOLATED cases of Garmin nuvi 205, 255W and 265W GPS receivers, customers have reported the PC Charge Mode issue.......". Well, my Garmin nuvi 205W displays a PC to GPS connection icon on the screen after about 30 seconds on this power converter, i.e. the map can't be displayed, making it utterly useless. If the power unit has known issues with certain GPS models they should not list those models as compatible with their product. Back to Amazon it goes.Two main problems:
1) Poor quality -The unit had a intermittent open circuit at the lower strain relief connector from the unit. If I moved the cable it would make connection but would lose connection again. I knew I'd have to fix their poor wiring for the unit to have a chance of being reliable, but it didn't matter since it was incompatible with my Nuvi 255 (see next proiblem).
2) Garmin issues -The unit comes with a little slip of paper that shows that Gilsson knowingly sells this product with a problem that it goes into PC charge mode when connected. They claim this only occurs with Nuvi 205, 255W, and 265W GPS receivers. I have a Nuvi 255 and it does have the problem, making the Gilsson unit useless. I'm glad it works for some other customers, but for me, this was a bad purchase.

Ok, so I was looking for something to power my nuvi GPS on motorcycle. Read many reviews and picked this one. It does work well. Used ties to position voltage reducer to frame under seat. Then ran striped wires end to splice into tail light. Lastly, I ran GPS plug end under tank along existing wires and tied them down. And there you have it... Riding all day with a powered GPS on a motorcycle.

I bought this as a trickle charger for an Odyssey battery installed in an airplane. My airplane sits in the hangar all winter, unattended, and the thing I don't like about this charger is that it has an internal cooling fan that runs continuously. Worse case scenario is the fan malfunctions and catches fire, with nobody around to notice. I installed the SG-4 with a 50 watt solar panel on a motor home. This setup replaces a non-functional 7-watt panel that was supposed to keep the coach batteries charged. The controller is mounted behind the coach monitor panel and I connected it to the original solar charge wiring, which made the installation pretty easy. It is pretty much install and forget and it has worked perfectly for 2 years. The system has kept the two 6 volt house batteries and a 12 volt chassis battery fully charged while the RV has been in winter storage as long as two months unattended. It works as advertised and keeps the batteries healthy. It has internal circuitry (diodes I suppose) that keep the batteries from discharging back through the panels at night. Since it is only rated to 4.5 amps, you would not be able to use much more than 50 watts of panels with this controller. That means it is not suitable where you have to have a lot of energy to recharge batteries quickly. But for charge maintenance, this is perfect.Received the item fast. Unfortunately it didn't work. We went to the Mfg website and looked at all the help files, followed all of their recommended procedures, and test procedures and nothing helped, it's just dead. My husband has a background in electrical, so he knows what he's doing. Returning it and ordering a different brand of controller. Hope that one works! I've had mine for over a year and it's just perfect for what it is. Vastly better charging than the dumb threshold on/off units. Temperature compensation is excellent. Albeit not MPPT, it really gets your batteries charged to their peak charge by floating the proper temperature-compensated voltage/amps to them. I.e., cold mornings you'll see like 14.6v, hot summer afternoons 14.2-ish.How it works: When your battery needs charging, it directly connects your solar panel to your battery, so your solar panel voltage drops to battery voltage (below optimal, which is why MPPT is better). As the battery is charged, the voltage climbs to meet the target (say, 14.4v), it starts pulsing the current very rapidly to the battery to give it just the right amperage it needs to hold the target voltage. You'll see the solar panel voltage rise above battery voltage as this starts to happen. The target voltage is held and over time, the amperage taken from the panel decreases. Cool.
My application is my first dip into solar to maintain two big batteries in my Dodge diesel pickup that isn't driven often and is not located near an outlet. And when it is driven, the system only puts out 14.0 volts, not 14.4 like many other cars do, so while batteries certainly get a charge while driving, short drives can't replace all the energy taken on start-up. Compare that to say my 2008 GM which puts out 14.7v for the first 15 mins or so, then 14.4.
Even in the short winter days, a 10 watt panel is overkill, probably could have gotten by with a 5 watt panel. Again, my use is not "charging", it's "maintaining." I agree a 50W panel is about the max you can use on this, which is rated to be 4.5A at 12v (54 watts), or ~3.8A at 14V. That's still a pretty good charging rate for a single battery in applications where it is discharged.
I might put the solar panel in the interior (factory tint side windows block quite a bit) and see how it goes. Then again, I might bring the batteries to the basement for the winter and treat them to weeks of desulfating from my BatteryMinders.
I use a "Watts Up" on the solar side and battery side to monitor Whr, amps, volts, etc and a voltmeter on the batteries. Neat stuff!
The good
It is ruggedly built with heavy duty wire in and out. It's in a heavy duty plastic shell that's filled with "potting compound" to make it water proof. The 4 wires come out through the potting compound. (They do warn you to install it so water doesn't collect in the open end of the shell.)
I hooked up a voltmeter and it's not contstantly turning on and off like the prior one. Now I'm getting a steady (in the short term) voltage based on the battery's state of charge.
The bad
There aren't any LEDs. You can't tell if it's working without a voltmeter and then you can only see one measurement at a time. (Volts in, volts out.)
There are cautions all over the instructions about not shorting out the solar power leads or it will ruin the controller. If you'll frequently be connecting/disconnecting the solar panels, install a short proof automotive connector that also prevents you from reversing the polarity.

I have only used this charger a couple of times but so far, so good. I like the fact that you can set it on automatic and forget about it. I would have given it 5 stars if there was an off switch. Would be nicer than having to unplug it, which in time will probably damage the cord. Also, after I purchased it, a mechanical engineer told me that my batteries would last longer and would both get an equal charge by charging them on the 12 volt mode sepeately rather than connecting the charger in series to both batteries and charging them on the 24 volt setting. If that is true, I didn't need a 24 volt charger because I couldn't find a 24 volt baffery, only 2 12 volt batteries connected in series. I still like the unit, thus far.

I have my Garmin traffic reciever plugged into the main socket as well as a mini USB and 2 x USB extention cables (to allow passengers to charge up devices). I'm not sure why others are having issues but it powers and charges my EVO 4G and GPS just fine. Simultaneously. I've even used another connection to charge my work phone and it charged fine. thumbs up from me.
