Based on the reviews I had read, I bought this "3 cigarette lighter" outlet expander for myself.I have to say this is one of the most practical purchases I've ever made.
It is great if you're traveling/road tripping and you and your passenger BOTH want to charge your phones simultaneously with different chargers. Or if you're both charging non-MP3 phones AND you want to use an mp3 player.
Or, in my case, if you want to charge both of your phones AND use your portable lava lamp, simultaneously. :-)

I'm checking into warranty now but this was the first I'd used it and I don't want another!Does the job, but it smells like burning electronics. This is because of the fan it needs to cool down its components. The smell should get less intense after leaving it on for a few hours at a time for a few days.

It is generally a mistake to use an inverter to power low power devices when running off local battery. The low efficiency of the inverter and AC supply combined is perhaps 60% compared to about 87% with a 12V car charger/adapter and the quiescent current when the load is not drawing power is around 3.5-25W for the inverter/ac supply vs about 0.035W for the adapter. AC powered devices are also often less efficient. It was a mistake not to include a 12V power outlet on this device. USB port is only rated for 500mA and does not have a separate power switch meaning you are wasting 3.3W instead of 0.035W. This device should have been built with a metal case/passive cooling instead of a power sucking fan. The fan uses relatively low power, sounds like it has poor quality bearings, and runs whenever the inverter/usb is on or whenever connected to an external power source. Because the life expectancy of the fan is poor, this might not last long use as a UPS for your DSL/cable modem.
With an external $80 26pound U1 size 12V 35Ahsealed lead acid deep cycle battery Lead Acid Battery(and separate charger or solar panels) run time can be extended about 10fold. A 20W solar panel ($60) LiteFuze® 20W Mono-crystalline Solar Panel 20 Watt High-Efficiency Durable Heavy Duty Long Lasting Frame could recharge this device in about 1 day, although the specs don't say if the "12V" input will withstand the 20V open circuit voltage of a "12V" solar panel. And it certainly doesn't claim to have maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) or it might be a good match for a small solar panel. The Li-Ion battery back inside is worth about $50 but has about 1/10th the capacity of a heavier and larger $80 sealed deep cycle lead acid battery (smaller than average car battery). Since the enercell is Li-Ion and doesn't bring out the battery connections, you can't just add a battery and expect this device to keep it topped off.
BTW, the internal battery pack should be charged at least once a month due to internal leakage if you want it to have juice when you need it; for maximum shelf life, though, when not needed to be ready it is best to store at 40% charge.
Run a piece of AC powered test equipment such as a digital oscilloscope without cords or available ac power. Run a 6W netbook for about 4 hours (netbook battery will run 4-10hours). Or run it in car or on emergency battery at lower efficiency if you neglected to buy the car charger. Laptop maybe an hour, if that. High powered desktop computer, not at all. Power out, phone lines up, netbook charged but you didn't buy a 12V adapter for your DSL modem? Run it for a few hours on this device to get disaster info. Maybe run your wireless router, too, halving the runtime. Run a 27W Razor 23" LED backlit LCD 1080P HDTV for about 1.3 hours, long enough to catch a newscast in an emergency, if you don't have a battery operated TV. Don't try to run your 50" TV; it will probably overload this device. My HLT71 battery operated TV draws about 8W when not trying to charge internal battery) so it could run almost 4 hours extra. Maybe you forgot to upgrade your battery operated TV to work with digital TV and need to power your converter box. Maybe you need to fire up your AC powered CB or ham radio (QRP) base station long enough to get out a distress call. You aren't going to cook, heat or cool your house, do your laundry, or keep your food refrigerated (you might run a 50W thermoelectric cooler for about 45minutes but those need to run close to 24hours/day to keep food cold). You might run a clip on fan for a couple hours. You aren't going to run power tools. You can charge your cell phone but there are more efficient ways to do that. Slow chargers would be particularly inefficient with this device. You didn't think about emergencies when you bought your AC only weather radio? Well, you can run it off this device long enough to check the forecast but you can't run it 24hours/day to monitor for alerts (without inefficient use of external battery). Run your AC powered AM/FM or Shortwave radio for a bit if you don't have a battery powered one. It doesn't have a built in flashlight. Run a 16W compact fluorescent for about 2 hours. You can loan a little power to your neighbor or bring a little inside from your car. I would not plan on using this device as the primary way to run anything in an emergency but it can be useful for those things that slipped through the cracks in your planning.
This is a cute little device that didn't have great bang for the buck or capacity as a serious source of emergency power, particularly with the design flaws and inadequate documentation, at its retail price (particularly in a bad economy) but at closeout prices is a good deal. Add to that the product packaging and documentation which fails to tell you what you needed to know, for the few people who even knew it existed during the short stay on retail shelves, so people would be reluctant to shell out $100 for enough units to keep it in production. This is a very handy power source for running any AC device within the 90W capacity limit. It integrates a lithium battery with the small AC inverter in one small package. It has a cooling fan so there is some ambient noise. I use this device to power a pair of Audioengine2 powered speakers (which are remarkable in themselves) so my application is noise sensitive. I house the inverter inside a softpack carrier wish is used to carry the speakers and this pretty well baffles the noise. Could be used to provide extra power to laptops as well. I must say I'm very happy with the price! At less than $10, it is cheaper than most inverter on the market, yet it doubles as a batter back up as well as an inverter. I've just received the product and did some short test, so far I'm happy. Will know more once I go on a trip to Florida. I plan to use it as the inverter in the car and as power backup for my laptops and ipads.Now, a few things I wasn't happy: the picture on amazon made it look much smaller than it is. The real thing is very thick, almost like a cube. Also, although the fan noise is not very loud, it is the whiny type that can be annoying. Hopefully with music on, it won't be too much trouble.

This llittle fella was the answer to a prayer. I needed to video record a special concert that lasted four hours. I recorded the sound on a separate device so the few parts to assemble the better.. The max batteries for the Canon camera only last 100 min. so I would have needed 3 @ $137.00 each. I discovered this unit which allowed me to plug the AC adapter for the camera in and record the entire night. It was incredible!! I have since done the same thing for another concert and it seems to last about 320-340 minutes. I have also powered my laptop for an additional 2½ hours when necessary.. This adapter definitely sits lower in my cupholder than what I was expecting. It looks taller in the product picture, but expect it to be just above flush with your cup-holder. If your car has two different sized cupholders, one larger than the other, this unit is designed to fit in the smaller standard size. For me that is the cupholder further from the control panel and closer to my center arm-rest.
The unit has four LED indicator lights so you can judge how many devices can be charged with it. This "Battery Level Indicator" feature is a nice extra, with "HIGH," "MID," "12V" and "LOW" indicators.
The product package indicates this unit works with standard 12V and 24VDC accessories. Apparently there's a fuse inside the unit in the event you over-use it, though I haven't yet had the fuze go on me.
CONSIDERATIONS
There are a few shortcomings to the product, all of which I would consider minor. First of all, the lighter cable is relatively short. That's ok if you are plugging it into the DC outlet on your control panel. Many newer cars also have DC outlets within the arm-rest console storage area. I found that the cord was just barely long enough to reach down into my car's storage compartment and be plugged in. That means for some vehicles, like larger cars and SUVs, it might be too short. The deeper the storage compartment, the more likely you are to have trouble using that DC outlet to power this adapter.
The two DC adapters are very deep within the unit, almost too deep. For many DC powered car accessories with shorter plugs, it seems like it might be possible to push them in too far and lose electrical contact.
The other minor negative was that the USB adapters are not perfectly parallel. They are separated by metal but the USB pins are embedded in tabs made of some kind of composite material. You have to carefully insert USB cables because if you don't you risk damaging your connector or the adapter.
CONCLUSION
This is a good unit even if it isn't perfect. Considering the price and the fact that the product performs as advertised, I still recommend this over most others I have tried. It's worth it to have a few extra adapter plugs available to charge your accessories and electronics in your car.

This item would be great if it worked, but my USB circuit blew out within a few days of plugging it in, before I even had a chance to use the USB sockets. I smelled burning insulation but didn't associate it with the converter.I think many (all?) of the folks who are complaining about the LEDs being nonfunctional don't realize that they are reading the charge state of the CAR battery, not the items that are plugged in. If you look at the small instruction sheet included, it says that it's showing the functioning of the car's charge system when the car is running, and the charge on the battery 10 minutes after the car is shut off (but with the starter switch in the 'accessory' position. Quite useful for finding out what kind of shape your battery is in before the cold weather hits, as even a mostly-dead battery will start a car OK in warmer weather. This little item saved me a tow.
At least the 12V sockets still work. I wish I had tried it out when I first got it rather than wait a couple of months I wasn't able to return it for a refund.

Nice surface for gripping the plug when pulling out the plug, but for me I wish the plug was smaller or right angle... I'm not going to be unplugging it. Due to the short length of the cable, and the big plug, I directly wired a socket extension cable to my car's accessory wiring to avoid a big plug in my center console... which also frees up my car's socket.
Bright smooth nickel plated contacts all around. Fuse is a standard cylinder type marked 10A, accessed by unscrewing the nipple end of the plug. The + contacts for the round sockets is one solid piece of metal. One philips screw in the middle of the bottom appears to hold the case together, also one phillips holding together the plug.
Subtle blue glow from the base of the round sockets. Not obnoxious bright like the units I used to have.
This is a perfect solution for what I needed, and the unit works well. Like most adapters it takes two hands to remove the plug, however the design allows single handed plugging.

I used this with my Cowon S9. It works, but not very well at all. The signal from the transmitter is way to weak, and there is still a hiss coming through from the radio's white-noise. I also have to turn the S9 to max volume / drive to get enough signal to the radio.

Don't buy this. Buy something with enough drive to get a good good clear and noiseless signal coming out your speakers. Make sure your device doesn't have to be wide open / audio drive maxed out, to get enough signal. Doing so, is pushing / driving your device to hard. Stay away from this Gomadic FM Transmitter.

Summary:

Checked legality with friend of mine who is an Officer and found out that these are not illegal in California. BUT:Keep on mind that seeing one in your car will certainly NOT make Officer happy, and it WILL put you in A bad light.
To conclude: Well paid off investment. I was supposed to be ticketed dozen of times w/out this. At least I am honest and hope that helps. But don't be me. I still don't encourage you to you to speed and drive unsafely. Be smart, at the end of the day all that speeding, will save you only 2-3 minutes. I promise to change, too.

P.S. If in need for speed: Go to the race track.I can't justify paying more than $100 dollars for a RADAR detector. This one does the job fine. All RADAR detectors will give false alarms for door openers, etc., since they use the same frequencies. Also, officers have to have their RADAR on for your detector to work. Some of the reviews on here whined about police officers being right next to them and it not going off.
For a cheap RADAR/LIDAR detector, the Cobras work just like they should. They cannot do magic, and neither can the $400 ones. The only advantage to the more expensive ones are if they come with remote mounted (front and rear) sensors. Otherwise, it's the same technology for 4x times the price.I recently took a 400 mile round trip with my Cobra and I was very pleased in fact it saved me twice from getting a $180 ticket so it more than paid for it self two times over. False alerts are very rare and it's very obvious by the strength that it's from a store. On a straight run on the highway I get about a two mile or more warning. On hills and curves that is cut down quite a bit but still enough time to slow down. I love the extra features like the compass and intellimute. The usb port for the gps module is great to have if I ever want red light camera capability. The size is a little longer that other radar detectors but the suction cup mount seems stronger that the $350 Escort I had and the unit does not shake like the Escort did. The coiled cord is nice and is a perfect length for my car. A long straight cord is available if anyone needs that.
Overall I'm very happy with the Cobra. It looks great and works great. What more can you ask for? Buy it. You'll like it.

After enjoying the XRS 9945 for a couple of weeks I decided to get the red light gps module. Although I haven't taken any trips yet that encounter red light cameras, I really like being able to put in my own user alerts (up to 1000) and having my speed and more accurate compass available. I feel I have the complete package now.

I don't know why people are bashing Cobra radar detectors. The XRS 9945 has worked as well as an Escort 8500 I had a while back plus it has tons of useful features. I read about a $500 Bell and how it knows the difference between non police signals and police radar (different freq's). My Cobra does that at one quarter the price. I had a low end Cobra from Walmart and a mid range Whistler and they were both junk. The only time they would alert to a police radar is when you were withing 100 ft. However they alerted to everything else. The Cobra XRS 9945 is not in that class at all. It is so quiet sometimes I think it's not working. It seems the way I have it configured, the only time it alerts is when it's a cop. Isn't that what we want from a detector? It is a quality, reliable product with tons of features for a great price.I have been using this product for well over 3 months already n at first it was not senstive bit when I started to play around with the setting I found it to be very senstive... When I first got it had a hard time picking up the ka band. But since now I have set it up the right way. I usually pick up the ka band from 2 to 3 miles away. And the laser from a cop about a mile away. It's a really good radar detector and I recommend you to get it but I will say you have to play with the settings before you use it. If anyone has any questions just as me I'll glady help you out...

This charger doesn't last long. It won't even last long enough to fully charge my iPhone 4S. It also makes a high pitch sound while plugged in to the wall.
The benefits to it are that the electrical plugs fold into the back of the product for slimmer storage. It also includes a built in light which is not powerful at all. It is small in size which is nice too.
Overall, I would not recommend this product. I'd suggest spending a little more to get one with a longer battery life.

As of 12/28/12, the capacity of this backup battery is not listed in the description, so I wanted to be sure that it was available to potential buyers. On the outside of the carton, it lists a capacity of 1000 mAh not enough to fully charge most smartphones. This is a low capacity relative to the size and price of the device. The variety of charging options is a plus, and it's light, but unless you only intend to charge low capacity batteries, it's nowhere near enough to offset the negatives.

Whistler Pro-3000W 3,000 Watt Power Inverter
I have purchased many inverters for my service truck, RV, boat, and emergency home backup, and this is what I have learned...Buying a large inverter is confusing. Most people want their inverter to run the "continuous" loads that they have, plus have enough surge power to start air conditioners, microwaves, sump pumps, etc. Seems simple enough, but when they purchase an inverter, usually it can't handle the startup surge they were hoping. Herein is the problem: most people don't understand "Surge Duration".
Most inverters can put out more than their rated "continuous" output for surge. But the question is: How long can the inverter provide that surge? The vast majority of consumer inverters can only provide surge for 2 seconds with most less than 1 second! This is totally inadequate for hard starting appliances. I have measured the surge on my 2 hp air compressor, and it lasted about 5 seconds before it settled out to its "continuous" wattage. My 1000 watt microwave settles down at about the 3 second mark.
So what to do? Always look for an inverter with a long surge duration. The bigger inverter companies sell them, but they are usually labeled "Industrial" or "Commercial", and are much more expensive.
Which brings me to the Whistler Pro Inverters. Whistler Pro's have something they call "Smart Surge Control" that provides the surge wattage for close to 10 seconds. That is the longest I have found of any low priced consumer based inverter. I gave several a shot, and they work as advertised! They have more than enough surge duration to start my hard starting appliances like A/C, microwave, air compressor, large power tools, sump pump, etc. My 3000 watt Whistler (5000 watt surge) can start my hard starting RV air conditioner with no problem while also running my microwave!
...So add up your continuous wattage needs. Then find the wattage of your most surge hungry appliance (here is a great chart w w w.g e n e r a t o r s a l e s.c o m/w a t t a g e-c a l c u l a t o r.a s p ) and size your inverter based on those calculations.
Example:
Rated running watts ("continuous") of my lights + fridge + sump pump = 1440 running watts
Largest Surge wattage appliance is my big sump pump = 2700 surge watts
Pick the inverter that is above both ratings, in this case I would get a Whistler Pro 1600. It is rated at 1600 watts running continuous, 3200 surge.
Remember: inverters require VERY HIGH current, so the 12v cables have to be VERY large to work correctly. For larger inverters (1500 watt+) the cables need to be LARGER than the cables you see on your car battery. Large cables are expensive, stiff and heavy, but are a MUST! Your inverter will NOT run correctly without them! Follow the cable sizing guides, and don't skimp or you will be disappointed with your inverter's performance! I cannot stress this enough. Also, keep the 12v connectors clean and tight for reliable power.
Lastly, let's talk about your batteries:
Home backup, off grid or RV (large) inverter use requires more than one deep cycle battery, usually many more. Check with an inverter pro to size your battery bank correctly BEFORE you purchase your inverter.
For those of you that are running an inverter in an idling single battery vehicle, the vehicle alternator makes your battery look bigger than it is. In my truck I have a 165 amp alternator with a 1600 watt continuous inverter. It works terrific with the engine idling. I just don't use the inverter with the engine off. The continuous large current draw on an ordinary car battery will shorten its life considerably if the engine is not running. I could install a battery isolator with a second battery, but if I leave the truck idling, that isn't necessary. Remember, BIG cables, TIGHT clean connectors!

Just to clear up some confusion about using an inverter in a running vehicle:
If you draw more amps than the alternator can produce at idle, you will drain your battery. Once the battery voltage drops below about 10.5 volts, the inverter will shut itself down. Most alternators produce about 30%-40% of their output at idle. High output replacement alternators are readily available. Just Google "high output alternator". Be sure to increase the size of the alternator hot wire if necessary to support the higher amps of the replacement alternator...
BACKGROUND STORY:
Living in the NJ/NY area, we don't see a lot of hurricanes or even tropical storms. Once in a while, Mother Nature decides to give us a taste of what one can do. Originally being from MA and also living several years in eastern NC, I've seen what damage they can do. I knew some type of backup power may be necessary. Without operation sump pumps in my basement, it would certainly flood. As Hurricane Irene came bearing down on NY/NJ expecting to arrive on Saturday night, early Thursday I frantically looked for a generator. Home Depot, Lowes, Sears were already sold out across the northeastern seaboard. As you can imagine, they don't stock a lot here. Then I had an idea. A POWER INVERTER! I quickly logged on to Amazon and looked for a 3000W that could handle my two sump pumps. I paid the extra shipping fee to guarantee arrival by Saturday morning. Sure enough it arrived when promised. THANKS, AMAZON!
Well, needless to say Irene hit my area with a massive amount of rain. Eventually our local substation flooded and I had no power. The sump pump wells started to fill quickly. Thanks to my power inverter, I was able to react! I hooked it up and got those pumps running saving my basement. I saved my neighbors basement too!
So what does this inverter do? Basically it inverts power from DC (i.e. a car battery, marine battery or deep cycle battery) to AC (110V) which your appliances need to run. In the case of the car battery hook up, your car acts as a generator (recharging batter via alternator when your car is running).
THE SET UP
I knew very little about this type of equipment, but it was surprisingly easy to set-up. I followed the instructions as listed in the manual. I have replaced car batteries in the past, so maybe that's why this seemed fairly straightforward to me. If you're not familiar with car batteries, you may want someone to assist you. Be safe!
MAKE SURE YOU PURCHASE WIRES! I am referring to the cables/wires that lead from the inverter to your car battery. I didn't purchase them when I bought the inverter. I had to go to the local auto parts store and beg them to build me two about an hour before the storm arrived. This included purchasing the wire and having the proper ends added and crimped which requires a special tool. See manual for gauge required. It depends on the length of wire you need.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE GROUND WIRE (see manual for specs)
THE USE
Once hooked up to your car battery, follow the proper procedure for start-up. Then you just need to plug in your appliances into the 3 outlets provided.
Insure all connections are good!
Turn on inverter and your appliances should be powered!
Fairly simple, right?
TIPS
Purchase Whistler power cables when you purchase the inverter. If you don't, then bring the inverter and manual to a local auto parts or auto electrician to build the wires for you.
If using your car battery, one obviously doesn't want your car running in an attached garage/area without proper airflow AND ventilation. I unfortunately (?) have a detached garage which was a blessing in this case. I had my car half way in with it's tail end sticking out. Kept everything dry and no worries about asphyxiation.
You don't need the car running all the time. However, depending on the appliances you're using and how much you're using them will determine the amount of drain you'll be pulling on your car's battery. If the voltage from your car battery gets too low, the inverter will shut down and an alarm will sound. Nothing will be getting powered once this happens. You'll need to turn off the inverter, start your car engine and turn inverter back on.
Keep an eye on the voltage usage and wattage usage frequently. The alarm is not that loud, so if your neighbor is running a generator you may not hear it.
If running several appliances at once, you may need to some "power management". I was switching in and out pumps in order to avoid any overload (I was also helping a neighbor drain his basement).
Do some homework on the appliances that you're planning to run. Make sure you understand the wattage each needs to run. Remember, certain appliances like sump pumps and refrigerators need a lot more wattage to start-up than run continuously. For example, when my sump pump would start up it would pull close to 2000 Watts. Once it was running, it was only use 700 watts. So imagine your refrigerator and 2 sump pumps happen to start at the same time. You'll probably set off the auto shutdown. So just be aware of those situations.
When turning your inverter on after a shutdown, unplug all cords. Then plug one in, wait a bit, then plug in another...etc. Again, you don't want all appliances starting at same time (even though the 3000W has something like a 5000W peak...why push it???)

I was suprised to see some bad reviews about this unit because this thing is great. Here are the gists:Pro:

I just returned from a 4,128 mile trip in our new (2007) Motorhome from AZ to MN, WI, IA, NE, KS, NM and the navigation on this Alpine PMD-B100 is completely unacceptable. We had to relie on road maps most of the time and thank goodness we had them with us. As an example, just before we reached our home destination it had me turn into an airport which wasn't a road, but a driveway. It told me to turn into a Pecan Grove where there wasn't even a road and then when I was on the main road leading to my home it wanted me to take I-19 N, make a u-turn and come back on the other side of the Interstate to get me to the exit I was already at. I'm going to check with Alpine to see if there is an update on software or I'm going to have to get something else. If it can't be reliable, it's of no use. We learned after the first error, but after the second one, we rechecked our "common sense approach" much oftener. Putting in addresses is also a challenge and at times you have to use a couple of different approaches to enter it. If it wasn't for the bad navigation it would be a super unit, but, how can you give it more than 1 star when it can't navigate. I've been using the PMDB100T since Dec. 06. It started out great but for the past few months it reboots itself fairly often, usually locking up at the startup screen. This always seems to happen as I approach a freeway interchange where the guidance would be most useful. Sometimes I can power off, then on again and get it going but other times it has to be removed from the cradle and the battery removed and replaced before it will start up. Not exaclty a wise task to try while navigating city traffic. The points of interest database seems to be very outdated. I have followed directions a few times only to find the destination no longer exists.The backlight on the controls constantly goes on and off as headlights from approaching cars hit it. It's very distracting at night.
Other family members have Magellan units and I bet I'll end up switching before long. This thing is just too unreliable.
