Sirius One SV1 Satellite Radio with Car Kit

Sirius One SV1 Satellite Radio with Car Kit
  • Plug-and-play Sirius satellite radio receiver with car kit for easy vehicle installation
  • Offers access to more than 130 digital-quality music, sports, entertainment, and talk streams
  • Built-in FM transmitter; alternate suction cup mount and dash/visor mount
  • 1-line, 12-character dot matrix display with 180-degree inversion option
  • Measures 2.75 x 0.94 x 4.5 inches (W x H x D); 1-year warranty

A friend of mine gave me an Amazon Gift Certificate for Christmas and I used it to buy this little Sirius radio. Though other radios have more bells and whistles I am very happy with this one.

First of all, price-wise it cannot be beat. It includes everything you need to use it in your car (mounting bracket, power cable that plugs into the car lighter, antenna, remote control). At this time there doesn't seem to be a home kit for it. That was not a deal breaker for me since I was planning to really only listen to it in the car anyway. Plus, when you joing Sirius you can listen to all the music channels online.

Though this is a simple unit, it does include some nice features. There are presets that work great. You can set the display to show the channel you are on or have it scroll to tell you the artist and title of the song that is playing.

It has a built-in transmitter that transmits over the car's FM radio on an unused channel. This has worked great for me and I think the sound is very good. I did need to change the FM channel it was transmitting to (easy to change and you can have up to five presets for this as well) once or twice but once I found a truly open station it was crystal clear. It should be noted that I live in LA which is a very crowded radio market. Still I was able to find a clear FM slot to tune the Sirius radio's transmitter to. If you are not in a major market that should not be a problem at all, and really wasn't that big of a deal for me here in LA.

I think it is a sharp little unit and very solid. I am happy with it and if you are looking for a nice, low price unit this is a great choice. I am also very happy with the Sirius service. The music channels are great and I enjoy the sports and talk radio.

First off, this thing is $30 right off the rack. It's not like you buying a Marantz here, so stay real in your expectations. I have it in my car and it works fine. I had many of the same station bleeding problems others have, but they tell you right in the packaging that just using the FM transmitter is the worst way to use it. What I think everyone who has problems with it needs is a part sold through Sirius called an FM Direct adapter. I got one at Circuit City for $20. Since I'm not too mechanically inclined, I went ahead and let Circuit City install it, too, for $59. It now works perfectly. They mounted it on the windshield of my car (where you might have a parking sticker)and it has maybe an inch or two of wiring exposed. I'm not shilling for Circuit City. Go where you like or do it yourself, but the installers there suggested this simple solution and it now works great. And yeah, okay, I paid for the install so technically it was more than 20 bucks, but you get the idea. Oh, by the way, it can be hard to read on a bright day....I'll agree with that.

Nice and small (about the size of a pack of cigarettes) and comes with everything you need to install yourself. Sound quality via the FM transmitter is decent, though far from being outstanding. The unit does get quite warm which I've heard is normal. Reception (in Los Angeles)has been excellent. Price is right as well, a welcome compromise from having to shell out well over a hundred bucks for an in-dash unit. The best part: being able to once again listen to Howard in the morning.

Great little thing can't really beat the price. Yes, on some of the units the presets are not kept when you turn it off and it reverts back to 184 when you turn it back on. Before going thru with the return & exchange hassle please try this: Unplug and put back all cables going to the unit; go in your account at the Sirius website and in the "Services" section click on your ESN. Once you are in "Service Details" click "Re-Send Activation Signal". Make sure the unit reads "Updating". When it is finished you should be able to keep your presets and the last station before turn off. It really did work for me, hopefully it will for you too :) Good luck!

I bought this with low expectations. Others had said it was hard to read, and that the FM transmitter was no good. Well, the thing works great and the FM transmitter worked like a charm in my VW, but the screen is REALLY hard to read. Blue is just not a good color to try to see during the day.. At night it is great -doesn't match the VW blue guages exactly but looks good.

The satellite radio itself and the FM transmitter sounded great. The unit does get a little hot, but I had it in a very enclosed area.

I didn't think I'd care than it was a one line display, but it really does hinder you from "channel surfing" -you have to repeatedly switch between showing CHANNEL NAME, ARTIST, and SONG or you can have it scroll.

Overall, I still like this radio best out of Sirius' lineup -it is small, fits great it my little cubby below the radio, and works well. I just wish it was easier to read during the day. Setting presets for FM, and setting your favorite stations makes it easy to still use it during the day, just realize the limitations!

I have a car that spends the entire Winter sleeping in the garage. It has very low mileage and only sees nice weather. But, the long periods of inactivity draw from the battery's charge since I leave it in the car with the terminals attached. The SuperSmart Battery Tender does a nice job of keeping the battery charged during the down time. And, the low amphr charge rate does not overcharge the battery. One of my sons has used a Battery Tender for his motorcycle batteries for years and loves it.

My Garmin Nuvi 750's battery would not hold a charge. If you check the Gamin website you'll find they don't sell battery replacements. I guess they expect us to buy new Garmins. I wanted to look at the battery before buying this kit, but was unable to find the right size star-screwdriver. This kit comes with a screwdriver, prying tool, battery, and CD that shows you how to replace the battery. It was easy to replace the battery and now my Garmin's battery can hold a charge. This kit is definately worth the money!

The process to replace my battery was simple and straigh forward. The tools and instructions provided were excellent. My GPS is now functioning like new, perhaps even better.

Received the kit and installed the battery today. This part of my review will be only on the kit and installation of the battery since I have not had time to do a real duration test of it. Therefore, this portion of my review will not cover the life of the battery.

The kit came with two screw drivers: a Philips head and a star head. The screws on my 750 were star-head, so there must be some out there with Philips head ones.

The DVD that came with the kit is adequate and basic but could have covered a few additional issues, hence the four star rating. The first was the difficulty of getting the back off the GPS unit. The kit comes with a plastic pry tool that you use to remove the back after removing the screws; however, the back on mine was a lot more difficult to remove than the one in the video. After about four or five tries, it finally yielded and came off. Removing the actual battery was also a lot more difficult than shown in the DVD because of the double-sided tape holding it in. The DVD demo showed the old battery merely falling out. Some reviewers remarked that there was no mention of double-sided tape being required for the new battery [the piece on the old battery would not come off it] because it would rattle around inside the GPS without it. Since the tape I had would have been very difficult to remove if it prevented the back from being replaced, I decided to try it without the tape first. As it turns out, I didn't need the tape at all; the new battery fit snugly in. Therefore, I recommend trying it without the tape first.

The new battery came about two-thirds already charged, and I re-charged it for about two hours to the four-bar level. I then ran a two-hour simulated trip, and it was back to about two-thirds. At the time of this writing, it has been on for about two hours and forty-five minutes and is down to about half charged.

[To be continued.]

Nov. 7, 2011

I fully charged the battery [overnight] and ran a 4-1/2 hour simulated trip. At the end, there was still some charge left so I left it on. It lasted an additional 20 minutes for a total of 4 hours 50 min.

Battery is still working great. No complaints.

Want Garmin Nuvi 750 Battery Replacement Kit with Installation Video, Tools, and Extended Life Battery. # Discount?

I was leaving on vacation when my Nuvi 750 died in the car. I was forced to replace it with a newer model because we were driving about 6000 miles. Since I really missed some of the now discontinued 750's features I ordered this replacement battery kit as soon as I got home. The kit arrived quickly. The tools were simple and the video was easy to understand. I think they could have mentioned how the original battery is stuck in really tightly using double-sided tape. The actual replacement was very easy after the battery was "unstuck". Saddly enough the new battery didn't seem to hold a charge. I was miffed and contacted Innovate88 (via email through Amazon) expecting a hassle but they couldn't have been nicer. They immediately apologized and sent another battery which has been working just fine. There is a chance that I did something wrong with the first replacement, but they didn't even ask, they just sent another one right away. Thanks Bill at Innovate88.

I really liked the fact that everything you need to change the battery is included along with the cd to visually see how to do it. It would be helpful if they would also include some type of double stick tape to hold the battery in place. Being a crafter, this was something I already had on hand. This would be a great benefit for others who purchase this.

Energizer Instant Charger Made for iPod/iPhone

Energizer Instant Charger Made for iPod/iPhoneBefore Hurricane Sandy made landfall, forecasters in my area warned of prolonged power outages that could possibly last a week or longer. Thankfully, my area didn't take the brunt of the storm, but it got me thinking about what I would do for communications during a prolonged outage. I have a couple external, rechargeable batteries I could use to charge my iPhone, but what would I do once they were dead? Solar chargers are available, but the technology doesn't seem to be quite there yet and most reviews indicate they can take up to a week of clear, blue skies to recharge fully.

The Energizer Instant Charger is a practical choice. Although it comes with single-use Lithium batteries (expensive), you can use any brand rechargeable AA NiMH batteries in it (I personally like Rayovac's Hybrid AA batteries, which can be found for under ten dollars for a 4-pack at many stores). This allows you to keep as many backup batteries on hand as you like in the event of a power outage (you can use alkalines as well). So if it comes down to it, you could keep your phone charged with batteries from your remotes, clocks, etc. And for times when you don't need it, you can use the batteries in your Wiimotes, digital cameras, and other devices, so you don't need to keep batteries specifically dedicated to this charger.

PROs

+ Three NiMH batteries can take my iPhone 4S to a full charge.

+ The charger only turns on when it is connected to your phone, so you don't have to worry about it accidentally turning on and draining in your pocket

+ When your phone hits 100%, this charger automatically shuts off. You can override this by hitting the power button on the charger if you want to "trickle" charge your phone.

+ No internal battery to worry about eventually "wearing out" from too many charge cycles. Simply buy new AA rechargeable batteries if the ones you have start to wear out.

CONs

Connector is flimsy, so you probably don't want to carry your phone around while it's charging for fear of the connector bending and breaking off

I know it's only a matter of time until I lose the cap for the connector

It uses the Apple 30-pin connector, so it will not work with the new iPhone 5 or any Android phones (however, I believe this is also keeping the price of the device fairly low at the time of this writing)

Nice little unit, and when you figure that the included 3 Lithium Energizer run almost $2 each even in a multipack, you have to figure it's pretty good value.

Not sure where this goes best though?

It's about the size of an older style small cellphone, so if you're carrying a backpack, or purse, no problem but you probably don't want another item in your pocket?

So, how about in your car glove box, or in your carry on bag when traveling? Well, these days if you have a spare charging lead (pretty inexpensive) or a spare USB lead (also pretty inexpensive) chances are you're never far away from a USB charging station in most airports, or even in your car (on newer models anyway) or you probably even have a USB to AC adapter?

So back to square one, if you are in the middle of nowhere, or on a camping trip for example and your phone battery dies, and you were carrying this either on your person, or in a bag or purse, Hey Presto! back up life for your phone.

For that, price, and looks I give it 4 stars.

For size, and chances of actually needing it, I knocked off a star

You might want to consider 5000mAh Solar Power Dual USB External Battery Pack and Charger for Cell Phones, iPhone, iPod, and Most USB Powered Devices or even just a spare USB Sync and Charging Cable Compatible with Apple iPhone (White).

Buy Energizer Instant Charger Made for iPod/iPhone Now

Let me say that this charger works well... but keep in mind, you should use this charger for emergencies only. why? Well the connection can be quite flimsy and if you have a particular case which is not completely open at the bottom, forget it... You'll need to remove your case completely. Why do I say use for emergencies? There are so many other battery/chargers around you can easily get something that would work better (like a Zagg Sparq), However, this shines when you have no access to outlets, need a charge and only have AA batteries.

Now as for does it work? Yes it works well with lithium batteries. I havent gotten the 2x performance, but will say i have been able to fully charge the device after being down to about 30%. Now keep in mind they recommend you use lithium batteries, which have a price premium hence another reason to look at other chargers for daily use.

Last thing to not... if you have an iPhone 5 don't buy this, it wont work with it unless you have the apple adapter.

All in all 3/5 stars

pros:

small

good for emergencies

cons:

poor connection

expensive batteries

compatibility issues with newer iProducts

I'm on the road for work, a lot. Around the world, in and out of airports, cabs, hotels, and so on. I try my best to keep my creaky iPhone 3GS charged, but the darn battery wears down so fast that it's a chore. I'm consistently finding myself arriving somewhere with a dead phone, no plugs in site, and no time to hunt one down. That's where this is a godsend.

Pros:

Charges my phone completely in about an hour. I don't have to pay attention to it just hook the parts together and let 'er rip.

Takes any AA batteries. This is good, since they're ubiquitous worldwide, and I can always find them somewhere.

I know I'll have power when I need it. Worth its weight in gold just for that.

Cons:

The connection is a bit weird you won't be talking while using it, since it becomes a "Zack Morris phone."

Want Energizer Instant Charger Made for iPod/iPhone Discount?

If you have an iPhone 4S or earlier, and you wish to prepare for disaster, this is the charger for you. It accepts alkaline disposable, NiMh rechargable, and lithium disposable batteries. Energizer thoughtfully provided a set of its own lithium disposable batteries. This type of battery is great for disasters because they will wait happily for 10 years or more for the disaster to start.

Being able to accept alkaline cells is also great. Personally, I hate alkalines because they frequently leak on me. But in an extended disaster, you will want to be able to use whatever battery type is available. Alkalines are available everywhere.

No cable to lose, and the protective cap grips reasonably well.

I like the "slide out" battery tray. When you change batteries, you do not disassemble the charger so you won't lose any pieces. Well, except for the protective cap. Watch that one.

Durability seems OK. It looks strong enough to survive a fall of a few feet. If you sit on it, you'll probably smash it.

The only negative I can find is that this charger might be too specialized for some people. It will only charge Iphones and iPod Touches, and is not compatible with the latest models such as iPhone 5. The fact that there is no cable means that your iPhone and charger form one very long and slightly unstable unit while connected. That's the trade-off for having no cord to lose.

If you do not have landline telephone service at home, then it would be useful to have this charger at home. Change the batteries every 10 years or so, and don't forget where you stashed it.

This is a great "idea" I just don't think the technology was thought out. It doesn't seem to have a great conection just a slight tap and it disconects. I think they need to come up with a better, more sturdy connection. Other than that it works great. But very irritating to go to turn up the volume during a call and it disconnects!

Schumacher SE-520MA 10/2 Fully Automatic Dual-Rate Chrager with LEDs
  • 10 amp fast charge for everyday charging needs
  • 2 amp trickle charge charges a small 12 volt battery in 2 - 12 hours
  • Choose between automatic charging or manual modes
  • LED's indicate when battery is fully charged
  • Rugged metal case with top carrying handle, weighs approximately 10 lbs., and comes with a 2 year limited warranty

I bought this little feller to replace an 40 amp converter that expired. I use it to maintain an auxiliary battery in my camping van; the converter was overkill.

The SE is a different shape than the converter but fit. It has been doing its thing for a couple of years with no problems as has the battery. It runs 24/7 except when we are driving. In campsite, it is across the battery that the TV uses and I get no noise from it; the converter gave me a low hum.

Should have bought it the first time.

The build quality is very poor. Can you imagine the nice-looking front panel is actually a piece of PAPER loosely (you can lift it up and see the back) attached to a metal plate, which is also loosely attached to the rest of the box? Worst, the one I got did not charge, and with a multimeter I found the output voltage is only 8.7 volt. I sent it back immediately.

I purchased it because of the previous two five star reviews, so I don't want other people to fall into the same trap. You have been warned.

I use this for charging my RV batteries when running my generator. I have had poor results using the built-in battery charger for my older model RV. From research it appears the older charging units do not charge the batteries adequately unless charged for a very long time if ever. I have my RV permanently 'way out there' and needed a quicker charger when running my generator. I have had to replace batteries prematurely as a result. I installed this charger by plugging into a receptacle in the RV and semi-permanently hooked it to my batteries and disconnected the old charger. Whenever I start the gererator I get a 10 amp rapid charge and an automatic charge reduction as the battery approaches full charge. My battery does not overcharge and boil off battery fluid because of the automatic feature. I have been very pleased by how quickly the batteries are charged compared to the built-in charger. Three stars because the wires on the charger get very warm with the 10 amp charge and there is no 'on' or 'off' switch, which I dislike as the unit must be unplugged while charging unless the generator is shut down. I can switch to and use the 2 amp feature and quickly disconnect the charger for use on ATV's, motorcycles, trickle charging, etc. I recently started using solar panels and only need to use the 2 amp charging rate and generator to keep the batteries at full charge after excessive use of electricity.

40A 12V/24V SOLAR PANEL BATTERY CHARGE CONTROLLER LCD SCREEN

40A 12V/24V SOLAR PANEL BATTERY CHARGE CONTROLLER LCD SCREENThis is a good charge controller, you can't beat the price. This charge controller has all the good bells and whistles of more expensive name brands at a fraction of the cost.

I have it hooked up to 350 watts, 20 Amps, from my solar panels and it is working great. The LCD screen is nice, definitely worth a few extra bucks, I can know exactly what my battery voltage is at anytime I want. This charge controller is able to use 8 gauge wire connected directly to it, bigger wire means better power flow. I plan on adding to my home built solar setup and this charge controller gives me that option. I am very happy with my purchase. It was shipped fast and the company even with the broken English was very helpful.

This step down converter is, in theory, designed for continuous use, provided you use it with the correct wattage appliance.

I used it as a supplement for my laptop, which draws at 130 watts. (The latop battery can handle up to 220-240V power, and only requires a plug adaptor, but I wanted to use the converter as a supplement/buffer for the battery, and it came in handy as a kind of short extension cord.) This converter is designed to support up to 200 watts, and I only needed 130 -but it quit on me 4 days into a 4 month trip. It ran hot, but did not smell burned -it simply stopped working after about 12 cumulative hours of use. Truly a waste of money. I recommend trying a different brand.

Long cord helped as it was heavy. Worked with any appliances when others didn't. Never used for more than hairdryer, ipod, camera charger or curling iron. Died on 10th day...no light no charge in an outlet that worked for others. Will take it apart to see if there's a fuse. Had it not stopped working, I would have given it the best of ratings!
