I use it a lot, but when the time changed (spring to fall) I am not able to change it myself on the device. It did not change automatically. which is sad. The time always still show more time than it is needed.

Briggs & Stratton 30470 7,000 Watt 420cc Gas Powered Portable Generator With Wheel KitI considered many of the alternatives before purchasing the B&S 30470, and I'm happy with my decision.

I was hoping to find a model that was not manufactured in China because there have been a lot of quality control problems with hardware (and food products) that come out of China and when you are purchasing a 200 pound product, you really don't want to take a chance on having something go wrong that will require you to bring it/ship it somewhere because of a problem. Unfortunately, it seems that virtually all of the generators in this price range are manufactured in China, including this one. B&S is a US company, but as others have noted in nearby reviews: much of their manufacturing is in China. But since they are a US company and they do have a brand name to protect, that was slightly reassuring. Also, if something ever does go wrong with it, there are plenty of small engine shops around that should be able to work on it.

The Honeywell models also seemed interesting, but I got cold feet when I found where one person had published a lot of false information about them on Amazon, Home Depot, and one or two other web sites. Investigating further, I found that they are made by a small company in the Midwest that licenses the Honeywell brand name and, like B&S, does their manufacturing in China.

It's loud, but quieter than I expected. For a neighborhood where the houses tend to be at least 50 yards apart, this is not an intolerable noise level in my judgment. It seems to be no louder, and might actually be quieter, then the generators that my neighbors run. If you are really worried about noise, spend an extra $3000 and purchase a Honda inverter generator.

It starts right up and smooths out pretty quickly. It hardly skips a beat when you throw a load on it.

A nice touch is the recessed well around the gas tank filler spout any spills will tend to stay right near the filler neck and can easily be wiped up.

Some things could be better:

1) The ignition switch and key are so cheesy that I decided it would be smartest to leave the key in the switch permanently. This is my biggest complaint and Briggs and Stratton need to do better.

2) It's good that it comes with a low-oil cutoff system, but the manual indicates that the only way you know if that system is working is if it won't run. Since a lot of other things might cause it to not run, it would be nice if there was an indicator of some sort telling you that the low-oil protection system had disabled it.

3) Since I'm using this to power my service entrance panel (I have an interlock in the panel that prevents backfeeding), and since the neutral and ground are bonded in the panel, I need to modify the generator to have a "floating neutral", instead of the "bonded neutral" that it came with. The majority of portable generators have this same issue: very few are shipped with a floating neutral. That's fine if you want to use it standalone to run extension cords, power tools, etc, but it's wrong for powering a house when there's a service interruption. All of the manufacturers need to do a better job of documenting this requirement and making the configuration change easy to accomplish. Briggs and Stratton doesn't even talk about it in the manual, but they did respond when I e-mailed them and they did assure me that this modification would not void the warranty.

4) It would be really nice to have a gauge that showed me what my current load is, or at least what my peak load has been. I calculated that this model would be big enough to run the refrigerator, the well pump, the furnace, and a few other things, but it would be reassuring to have a gauge tell me that I am/am not approaching the maximum load that this model was rated for.

I had contemplated that I would manage concerns about stale gas by adding fuel stabilizer to the gas and also by shutting off the fuel valve and then letting it burn up the gas that remained in the carburetor, but the fuel valve trick is not a good idea. In order to produce the correct 60 Hz electrical frequency, the engine needs to run at constant speed. If you start to starve the engine for fuel, it spends a couple of minutes revving up and down as the fuel mixture becomes leaner and leaner, before it finally uses up everything in the float bowl. I concluded that it was better to just shut it off with the key, leave fuel in the carburetor, and go with the fuel stabilizer.

My garage doesn't really have room to store a generator, and even if it did: I don't like the idea of dragging this out into the driveway or over a snow bank when I need to use it. I wound up building a small shed to store it in. I designed it so that the roof tips up and all four sides can come off when I want to run it. That allows for plenty of ventilation and cooling, but provides a stable place, out of the way, to store it. And since the roof tips up but stays on the shed, it has some amount of protection from rain and snow that it wouldn't have if I was just wheeling it out into the driveway.

So far, I've only used it a couple of times but I've been very happy with it and it seems to provide ample power to run the things I need the most when the power goes out: submersible pump, oil furnace, refrigerator, a few lights and etc.

I am a Consumer Reports subscriber (magazine and online), this generator is brand new for 2010 and it has not yet been reviewed by Consumer Reports. The last ratings they have for generators was in June of 2009, one of the top ranked then was Briggs and Stratton model#30242. I purchased model#30470 from Ace Hardware because at the time it was cheaper than Amazon(same price now).

This generator comes almost fully assembled, all I had to do was put on the wheels and add oil, (provided) gas and connect the negative battery terminal. It started with the key on the first try and I don't think it is loud at all, my neighbors even commented on how quiet it is for a generator (my Echo Backpack leaf blower (74 dB(A) is almost as loud as this generator). I have run this generator at half-load 3,500 running watts using 30 and 20 amp extension cords and have had no problems. I fully expect this generator to handle the brutal New England winters without a problem.

Living in a house that has well water with 3 young kids and the fact that neighborhood looses power frequently and with a history of multi-day outages, made the purchase of a generator a necessity.

I spent weeks researching generators, and kept coming back to the B&S 30470.

I have had great results with Briggs and Stratton engines going back to a 1979 lawn mower that i could not kill (wanted my dad to buy a self-propelled or lighter unit after 10 years of use) I digress...

I was fortunate to get the unit hooked up to a transfer switch by an electrician the day before Hurricane Irene came and I was so glad that I did. Before putting the generator to use, I loaded it with Mobil-1 Synthetic 5W-30. The drain plug on mine was on super tight and was nearly a knuckle buster when I broke torque. Below is some tips and advice that I have gleaned from my research and hope that it helps others.

1) Purchase price of the generator is typically not your only expense to getting power to your house. You have to consider the cost of a transfer switch, electrician, cable purchase which can run about $150 for a 50ft run, shed cost (if you plan on storing outside). You can also cheap charlie it and just use extension cords. But in my case the hastle of dealing with bugs in the summer,heat escaping in the winter and kids yanking or tripping on cords zig zagging through the house made the cheap charlie route not pass the WAF (wife acceptance factor).

2) Oil Consumption -I have read in Popular Mechanics that air cooled engines on average can consume 1 oz of oil per hour. I just changed after 5 hours and did not notice a drop in level. Knowing the potential for oil consumption, I am going to check oil level religiously during use and keep spare oil on hand.

3) Changing oil -Getting a rigid oil transport container under the drain plug is very difficult. My solution is to cut a reasonable size square opening say 2" x 2" in a 2 liter soda bottle and drain into the bottle first.

4) Use fuel stabilizer irregardless if you think that you are going to use it all up. Gas goes bad really fast especially E10 which is dispensed in most major metropolitan areas. Gas will turn to varnish and gum up the engine.

5) I want to explain the differences in float charger versus a trickle charger. I see so much misinformation in reviews on other sites. A float charger will only charge at the natural rate that the battery looses power. For example if a battery looses 5% a day, then the charger can only charge at 5% a day. A trickle charge will apply a constant charge to a battery, which could potentially lead to an overcharge which is a bad thing. Also all portable generators that I have seen do not charge the battery when they are running.

The cons:

The key insertion when the rubber cover is a little pain for me because the orientation of my generator in my enclosure. YMMV.

Noise, some might complain that it's too loud, I do not have any comparisons to other generators nor am I really close to my neighbors.

Bought this after last year's brutal snowstorm. I liked that it definitely handles my needs to operate comfortably (home mostly propane) and I like the key start. I keep it in the garage with the battery charger plugged in so it's ready when I need it and had an electrician install a manual transfer switch.

The electrician tested the generator hooked up to the switch with the well pump and most of the normal 120 circuits I'd want in a storm with no problem. He flushed the toilet repeatedly to empty the well tank so I could hear what a normal "blip" at the generator would sound like while the pump kicked in and refilled the tank.

I am rural so the noise is not an issue for me. I've not run this generator for a lot of hours but have run it the 5 hours prior to changing the oil the first time so it is ready for anything that this coming winter brings.

I purchased this generator after researching for quite awhile. The reviews on all websites were overwhelmingly positive, and I have always been well pleased with Briggs and Stratton products. However, after receiving this shipment I found that the choke was broken off the carburetor, two rear engine mount bolts were sheared off at the heads, and the negative battery terminal had one end broken off. None off these pieces were located anywhere near each other that would suggest damage from being dropped. I inspected the box as I received it and there was absolutely no damage to the container. So this generator must have left the factory in this condition.

After fixing the battery cable, the engine mount bolts, rigging the choke, and completing all necessary preparation procedures I stared the generator up by electric start and immediately heard a loud screeching from the manual pull rewind. I shut it down and found that the rewind was broken off at the head on the inside. I then left the head off and started the generator. It ran fine and smooth. I hooked up a well pump to it since this draws a tremendous amount off surge watts, and it handled it with no problem. Overall, I like this product, but am very wary of buying another B&G product. In my opinion, this kind of quality control is unacceptable. I wonder if it is now going to be their policy of displaying shoddy workmanship.

Deltran Battery Tender 12-Volt 800 milliamp Waterproof Battery Charger

The Battery Tender Waterproof Tender operates in essentially 3 stages. It first initiates an absorption charge that attempts to charge your battery to 14.5 VDC at up to 0.8A (or 800mA). This bit of information was not readily advertised, so I was concerned when I heard my battery making gurgling noises while the LED was "amber" for the past 8 hours. This battery was only 2 years old with less than 5000 miles and had been maintained since day 1, so I was sure it wasn't a problem with the battery. It turns out that it was nothing to be concerned about since this charger was designed to be used for long-term storage of batteries.

My previous charger, a Black & Decker / Vector 2A "smart" automatic maintainer tried to keep my battery voltage at 14.75 VDC at 2A for over 24 hours. Needless to say, I was concerned when I saw this happening with a brand new Battery Tender. I dug around on their website and discovered a PDF that indicated the Tender would try to reach 14.5 VDC for the absorption phase, at which point it would switch to a trickling charge and finally the maintenance charge. I logged all of the readings and confirmed that once the battery reached 14.4-14.5 VDC, it would start to trickle down finally remaining at about 13.12-13.22 VDC @ 20-100 mA. A modern car's parasitic draw is about 10-50 mA, so the maintenance charge is to compensate for the parasitic draw and for self-discharging of the battery. I discovered the Tender does a much better job at a maintenance charge because I have yet to see the Tender go into the Amber-LED mode, whereas my Vector/B&D occasionally switches back and forth even on a fully charged battery. I logged some data from the Vector/B&D and discovered that once the LED is green, it provides NO current to the battery. In essence, the Vector/B&D just shuts off once it reaches 14.5 VDC which is not as useful as providing an actual maintenance charge. The Battery Tender wins. Quite a few people have commented that their Sears "smart/automatic" maintainer and other brands constantly switch between the Green and Amber modes. I suspect those chargers are doing the same thing as the Vector/B&D. They just shut off when the battery is "charged", which is not very good for the battery. It needs to hold a maintenance charge to prevent sulfation.

The Tender Waterproof is fully encapsulated with a thermally conductive potting material. This makes the unit quite heavy for such a small device. It uses a quick-disconnect 2-terminal fitting that is commonly used for battery chargers/maintainers. It comes with ring terminals or large battery clamps all fused with a 7.5A ATC fuse. I made my own wiring harness with smaller alligator clips since I don't have room under the hood for large clamps, and I do not want to permanently install a set of ring terminals that can short out or cause other problems in the long-run.

Pros: Battery Tender has an excellent reputation for making reliable chargers. The Waterproof unit is quite durable and is insulated from shock, water, corrosion, extreme temperatures and other environmental variables.

Cons: At 800mA max current capacity, this charger will work rather slowly for 50Ah or larger capacity batteries, so expect 10-12 hours upon hooking it up to a battery before the LED turns green. The benefit of this is that it prevents boiling the battery or generating a lot of heat due to excessive current.

Overall: If you're using the charger in an environment subject to cold or hot temperature swings with plenty of moisture, such as in a detached garage for your motorcycle, boat, stored vehicle, or even a daily driver, I highly recommend the Waterproof unit over the Tender Jr or Tender Plus.

UPDATE:

I decided to purchase an additional Battery Tender Waterproof because I needed another charger for my daily driver and because I experienced no problems with the first unit.

I have been using battery tenders for a while now, but needed one that could be placed on outside vehicles without worrying about precipitation. This one was perfect. It's a simple little device if you can plug a cord in and connect like colored clips it's all you need.

The construction seems even hardier than I anticipated it seems very rugged. It has rained and snowed on it already with no issues. My biggest pet peeve is dead batteries, and battery tenders have worked great for me! My Harley battery is 5 years old and still functions like new.

I highly recommend you pick one up if you have a battery that sits idle for more than a few days at a time.

The Amazon title says this is an 800 Amp charger (which is a bit ludicrous -most houses are only set to handle 60-150 amps). This device is actually an 800 milliamp charger, or 0.8 amps. This places it as comparable to the 0.75 amp Deltran Battery Tender Junior.

The package includes high quality adapter cables, including both traditional claw-style clips (useful for charging/maintaining a stand alone battery) and o-rings to screw onto a battery for direct hookup while still installed in a vehicle. This charger charges batteries as well as I could have hoped. It is much faster than the last one I owned, but I wish it also had the capacity to charge the larger batteries like C and D cells. You also have to have two batteries charging at the same time, which is only slightly inconvenient. I think it will meet our needs.

Even though I have only used it a few times it works great for AA batteries. But I recently bought a phone that used AAA rechargeable Nimh batteries and even though it showed they had charged them when I put them in the phone they showed they were just about dead. I used the actual phone charger and charged for 7 hours like recommended and they charged to full fine on the phone charger so not to sure about charging AAA with it. I like the fact that I can take it with me in the car and use the 12v system. My camera seems to be a battery hog so it will come in handy when I take a trip.

Update. I have used this a number of times since I bought it. I even bought the same brand 4 pack AA batteries for a digital camera. I charge in pairs and it always seems like one finishes charging and then other one won't stop charging. I have used Ni-cads for years and I know when they start to warm up that usually means they are at the peak of there charge. I am not sure if I have a bad battery but it does it with another brand I have also and it doesn't help to change charging bays. I also just bought cordless phones that use AAA size Ni-MH batteries and this charger is supposed to be capable of charging them, well it wouldn't charge them. I stuck then in there and it showed they were fully charged but when I put the batteries in the phone they showed dead. I ended up having to just charge them in the phone charger.

I do property inspections EVERY day of the year...24/7, 365/365. When the banks call I respond and take gazillions of pics. My little Fuji camera is on its eleventy-seven millionth pic and my r/c's are on their eleventy-eighth.

I was using a Duracell 4-bank unit that glowed red till charged and then this amazing green light showed up and said 'DudE! We're charged!!!'. My Father-in-law liked it so much, he took it into his room and made ham and cabbage with it. That's how yummy it was.

Anyhoo, I did the research on smart chargers and this one came out on top in every category. I ordered it and within days USPS shoved it so far into my mailbox, I had to use both hands and all three feet to get the box out. I immediately popped in my dying batteries. It blinked, blinked faster and then stopped blinking. Surely all those dead batteries can't be charged already!?!?!?

Peeps, this thing is not only smart, it's super fast. 30 minutes for a completely dead NiMH. My deadest batteries were standing in line for a chance to swim in the AccuPower pool. I couldn't pop them in fast enough. Some of our old NiCds took a little longer but the NiMHs were literally begging for something to run!

The one thing I was looking for in a charger was a signal to let me know when they're charged and this machine not only tells you, but it trickle charges after they're full and protects them from overcharging. Old Nicads can be reconditioned with 3-4 charges and it brings them back to within 90% of their original condition.

The one thing I'll miss is the anticipation of a fully-charged battery to go with my bagel, dead Fuji and coffee on a cold winter morning. The one thing I won't miss is a warm, fully charged set of batteries when I need them the most :)

My husband and I bought this charger in August of this year. We have a R71 Ranger boat and needed something that would charge 4 batteries (two of the batteries are in tandem for a 24 volt trolling motor). So far we have not had any issues with it and are very pleased with the construction and performance of this charger. One unexpexted feature that we found really helpful is the unit comes with a cord keeper for the charger cord. Once installed the charger cord clips into the holder which keeps it out of the way. It's nice not having to dig around for the charger plug, plus the plug now stays clean and dry since it doesn't fall down into the battery compartment. We would highly recommend the Dual Pro Sportsman Charger.

  • High-efficiency 12 ampere charging outperforms conventional chargers

I got this to charge an Optima 8051-160 D31A YellowTop Battery, which was in turn purchased as part of preparations for electrical outages at home (I would like to be able to keep small gadgets such as smart phones going as long as possible). So I plan on just leaving this charger attached to the battery all the time, inside my house, in maintenance mode.

First impressions are that the unit looks great, seems to be well made, has some thoughtful features, and is extremely easy to use. The central display has a 0-100% digital dial which looks really attractive (if that matters to you it certainly can't hurt). To operate the unit, you basically just hook up the battery (red terminal first), plug the charger into the AC wall socket, wait for it to finish its self test, and then select one of the "Quick Select" buttons. There are two sets of these, on the left and right sides of the panel, both arranged as quadrants in a circle (i.e. four buttons in each circle, like if you cut a pizza into four). So on the left you have charging options for four types of battery: Engine Starting (Red Top), Deep Cycle (Yellow Top), Motorcycle, and Auto/Marine. Then on the right side you have another set of four buttons: One turns the backlight on the central display on and off, then there's Battery Maintainer, Aux Maintainer (plug in on side), and Battery Pre-Charge Status. To be honest I haven't played with the ones on the right side (except for turning the backlight on and off); I just wanted to charge and maintain the new Yellow Top battery, so I pressed that button on the left and then let the charger do its thing. It's entirely automatic after that; so basically, you just need to know what type of battery you have, push one button, and off it goes. VERY easy. First it spends a minute or so analysing the battery. It then goes into "Charging" mode, showing a dial with how much charge it thinks the battery currently has. During this time, for my new battery it showed me about 75% charge. Then it shifted into "Conditioning" mode, with the meter now reading about 90%. A few minutes later it went to 100% and "Maintenance" mode. The central display also shows Volts DC in the bottom left, and Amps DC in the bottom right, presumably the former is the current voltage of the battery, and the latter is the amps being applied to charge it. So at all times you have a clear visual indication of the state of the battery, and what is being done to it.

This is a multistage charger, which means it has these different levels that it can use (charge, condition, maintenance etc) based on its analysis of the state of the battery. This also means that it's safe to leave the charger connected to the battery all the time it won't be damaged, in fact it will keep it topped up safely. Also, if you leave it connected in maintenance mode, then the charger will do an automatic three hour reconditioning of the battery every 30 days; this helps with desulfating AGM batteries, which is apparently something that can happen with this type of battery if you're not careful. I feel encouraged that the battery and the charger are both made by the same people, so presumably they know how to keep their own batteries in optimal condition. But obviously this charger isn't just for Optima batteries it'll work with any 12 volt battery for car, truck, motorcycle, boat etc.

I should mention noise: Namely, there isn't any. Some chargers have a tendency to buzz, this one is completely silent. ***Update: Actually, I've noticed that a fan does come on after a while when it's in full-on "charge" mode. This is presumably because of the increased amps being delivered (up to 12 amps DC). However during "maintenance" mode it is usually delivering a trickle charge, which doesn't seem to need the fan. Incidentally I notice that the only air vents seem to be on the bottom of the unit, so putting it on thick carpet would probably impede air flow down there. I would try to keep it on a solid, flat surface like hardwood or concrete floor, just to make sure it is able to keep itself cool when it needs to.

The charger has a place for winding the AC power cord, and an internal compartment in the back for stowing all the cables, which is a nice thought (so you don't have to have a tangled mess dangling all over the place when you transport the thing). Also, the carry handle folds away neatly on top when it's in use. Someone seems to have sat down and actually thought about how people would be using this thing, and what features would make it more convenient to transport and store.

There is also a USB charging port, though I haven't tried that yet. Currently the charger is installed in my home office, next to the new Yellow Top battery, trickle charging it in "maintenance" mode. I have to say it looks good, it's definitely an attractive piece of gear that my wife thinks looks like a small boom box. I really don't have anything bad to say about it at this early stage. These are first impressions; I guess only time will tell how it lasts let's hope a good long while!

Incidentally, in case anybody is interested: I purchased this charger as part of a setup that will hopefully provide power to keep my small electronic gadgets (smart phone etc) charged during electrical outages. Initially I purchased a Duracell DRPP600 Powerpack 600 Jump Starter and Emergency Power Source for this purpose, but after some more research decided to also try a more modular approach. This allows for use of a larger capacity battery, possibly multiple batteries, and easier replacement of the batteries, as well as a more sophisticated charger (the subject of this review), and inverters that can be used in your car as well as at home. A modular system allows for easier replacement of individual parts; the downside is that it is not as easily transportable as the all-in-one Duracell, and it is also more expensive, at least initially. I think both approaches have their place; I will still use the Duracell 600 for occasions where I need to just take a small power source along (car trips, camping etc), while the modular setup stays at home ready for emergencies. The other bits you would need for this, apart from the aforementioned battery and this charger, would be something like the Roadpro 12V Battery Clip-On and Cigarette Lighter Adapter (this clips onto the battery and gives you a 12V socket similar to the cigarette lighter socket in your car, and you can use any car USB charger then to charge your small gadgets like smartphones); then you need an inverter, e.g. Samlex America PST30S12A 300W Pure Sine Wave Inverter this gives you a 120V AC outlet. So then you would be set for a while should the power go out those Yellow Top batteries are the highest capacity (in terms of aH, or amp hours) that I found in the Optima lineup, and since they are "deep cycle", they are made to be able to be discharged completely and then recharged without damaging the battery. Of course if you want then you could even get multiple batteries to have on standby, depending on your needs, and hook them up to solar panels or whatever in addition to this charger. Lastly you might also want to get a tester so you can gauge the health of the battery during electrical outages, e.g. SOLAR BA7 100-1200 CCA Electronic Battery and System Tester. I am getting a solar panel (Instapark® NEW All Black 50W Mono-crystalline Solar Panel) and a charge controller (Sunforce 60031 10 Amp Digital Charge Controller) to keep the battery charged up during extended power outages.

All that being said, I think many (most?) people would probably be using this digital charger simply for keeping their car, truck, motorcycle or boat batteries healthy. Apparently this unit is able to "bring back from the dead" batteries that have been deeply discharged, due to its ability to analyse the battery's state and charge it appropriately. I haven't tried this out for myself, but based on what I have seen, I can believe it.

I bought this fancy battery charger and it works pretty good. After about two months half of the display went out. Getting ahold of Optima is proving to be very difficult. Until my warranty is dealt with I cannot recommend this product. I would buy a regular battery charger and a battery tender instead of this expensive complicated charger/tender with a fragile display and poor customer service from Optima.

I must admit I was anxious to try this unit and Amazon has the best price $149. If you don't see this price then they are out of stock and check back every day until you do.

I don't have time to write anything to long but will say that this is the best charger I have ever owned! It does so much and is very complete package! I am using a desulfator along with it to restore old battery. This unit starts at 1.25v which no charger will do. I have a Battery Tender which was not able able to charger and bring back one of my Odyssey battery's but the Optima did. Anyhow its your call what you buy but your a fool if you pass this charger up for a any lesser. I have learn my lessons that's all I will say.

I bought this charger because I needed one for my truck works great for that. What really impressed me though was hooking up a supposedly "dead" battery from a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Source) connected to my computer system. I hooked up the battery to this charger and about 2 hours later the battery readout was at 100% and the UPS is working fine now. I don't know how long it will last, but the charger is reading its capacity at 100% so I'm guessing it's good for the immediate future. That saves me about $60 because I'd ordinarily go to Batteries Plus and just get a new battery.

I got one of these because they're recommended for AGM batteries and are supposed to even work on deeply discharged batteries.

To start with, I opened the box and hooked it up to a "redtop". After waiting a few seconds for it to self-test it was clear that the readout was broken across the top of the "status" area where it tells you what's going on.This made it impossible to read the status of the charge. It seemed to be charging though so I continued.

Next, I hooked it up to two other (die hard, interstate) batteries which it charged fine. Then I moved it to a deeply discharged battery that we use for lighting and that's where things got funny.

It started charging and said the battery was at 75%. Then the battery started making bubbling sounds. Fearing it was overcharging or doing some other oddball stuff I shut it down, unplugged it and let it discharge. Then I hooked it back up and it read 17% charged. The battery started bubbling again so I figured that was it. I sent it back.

Pros: Looks nice. Kinda nice that it has a backlit display.

Hooks up to several different battery styles via alligator clips, rings, etc.

Has a maintenance port for hooking up a battery for long term storage.

Locking carry handle keeps it from flipping around while you work.

Rubberized exterior makes it less likely to get banged up.

Cons: Poor display quality

Power light bleeds over to the "Yellow top" deep cycle area making it look like you have deep cycle selected instead of standard auto battery.

Flap holding the power cord is cheap rubber and doesn't hold well after a few times.

Unreliable charging status may cause battery to gurgle ?explode?

After replacing my old truck (member of the family, but at 18 it's time for them to go out into the world) I needed to add the U-Haul "standard" 4 lead trailer wiring to the replacement vehicle (2008 Toyota Tacoma).

I chose the 46255 converter because it provides separate power to the trailer lights, instead of the more common direct tap into the existing lights. This ensures that the turn signal flasher speed does not change when the trailer is connected and that a problem with the trailer wiring will not prevent the vehicle lights from working.

Installation is straightforward, but the separate power feed requires tapping into a 12 volt point that is always on (not key controlled) to ensure that the trailer lights (tail, hazard) always work. The Tacoma fuse box is under the hood and the fuse slot that powers the optional factory/dealer installed trailer wiring is easy to find. The terminal on the fused connector provided with the converter can be trimmed to fit in that fuse slot, providing a labelled source of power.

Running the power lead to the back of the vehicle is slow if you don't have a lift to provide easy access, but can be done (minimum ground clearance on the Tacoma is 8 inches).

The wiring at the lights can be tapped either in the harness on the frame rail or inside the light cavity in the fender. I chose the light cavity as the connections are better protected from water and dirt, although the tap connectors provided with the kit are filled with a water-resistant compound to provide reliable connections under less-than-perfect conditions. If you have a passenger vehicle (car, van, suv), you would typically be making connections inside the trunk or cargo area where they would be protected from the weather. Having access to a copy of the vehicle service/wiring manual is helpful, as you don't have to test the wires to see which one is tail, brake, etc.

All the added wiring on the truck is supported by the provided zip-ties every 12 to 15 inches. I used a heavy duty nylon zip-tie to mount the converter box under the truck instead of the light weight zip-ties provided with the converter I want the installation to last as long as I keep the vehicle.

When I connected the power lead at the fuse box, everything worked as expected there is no better recommendation than that.

After blowing the non-serviceable tailight converter in my 99 4Runner I put in an aftermarket(not going to pay Toyota $250 for a new harness). Then the aftermarket converter couldn't take my camper lighting and I blew that too. So I researched and installed this Hoppy unit. It runs all of my trailer lights like a charm. I don't know if I got a dud of a battery with mine, but it only holds a charge for about 45 minutes. Not much help on a long ride.

This company (iBike) has been extremely unresponsive to any of my inquirees, and if I hadn't already invested several hundred dollars in their products, I would stay away entirely.
