Jabra CRUISER 2 Bluetooth In-Car Speakerphone

Jabra CRUISER 2 Bluetooth In-Car SpeakerphoneI own the Motorola T505 and the Jabra Cruiser2. It made sense to me to take a little road test and compare the two bluetooth speakerphones in an effort to determine which one is better. With my mom on the other end, I took to the local freeways and switched back and forth between the two units while mom told me what she was hearing on her end of the conversation.

Form: The Jabra Cruiser2 is attractive. It is lightweight but has a solid feel to it. Controls are simple to use and understand. The unit's design is understated and minimalist. A clip holds the Cruiser2 to your car's sun visor. Unfortunately, the Jabra's clip cannot be reversed. My car, an Audi, has sun visors that flip from front to rear, rather than the usual rear to front configuration. That means that I cannot use the Jabra Cruiser2 unless I mount it backwards. Conversely, the Motorola T505's clip allows the unit to be reversed, which gives one more mounting flexibility.

Setup: Pairing the Jabra Cruiser2 was quick and simple. A woman with a pleasant voice provides pairing instructions and also tells you quite clearly what's going on with the unit. My cell phone is a Palm Treo 755p, which was the model that came out just before the Palm Pre. For whatever reason, the Cruiser2 is apparently unable to download the directory from my phone. So when a call comes in, it simply announces the number rather than the name of the caller. I'm guessing this won't be a problem for most, as it's probably a simple incompatability between my cell phone and the Cruiser2.

Function: I used both the Jabra and Motorola units by listening through the internal speaker and I also used the FM transmitter function. The sound quality of the Jabra Cruiser2 is superior to the audio quality of the Motorola T505 when using its internal speaker. It's internal speaker seems to be larger, clearer and has a better volume output than the Motorolas.

According to mom, the microphone quality was similar between the two units. However, she felt that the Jabra's audio output was more "choppy" than the Motorola's.

When I use a bluetooth speakerphone, I usually set it to output to FM stereo. It is there that the Motorola has a clear advantage over the Jabra. I heard consistent background noise and static from the Jabra Cruiser2 where much less interference was heard from the Motorola T505. Several times, FM radio stations overpowered the Jabra's FM output. Yes, I clearly understand that the goal is to operate on a frequency where no FM station is broadcasting and I tried to do that. But the Jabra's FM transmitter did not seem up to the task. I'd rate it poorly with respect to it's FM output function.

Conclusion: There are things to like about the Jabra Cruiser2 and things not to like. It's appearance is sharp, setup is a breeze, and it's simple to operate. Audio quality and volume using the internal speaker is clear and relatively loud. But I'm frankly quite unhappy with the FM output of this unit.

I was torn as to whether to rate this unit 2 stars or 3 but I gave Jabra the benefit of the doubt with a 3 star rating. However, I don't expect to use the Cruiser2 much, if at all, because the poor FM transmitter is a deal breaker to me. So, if you're planning on using the Cruiser2 by utilizing its internal speaker, I think that you'll be satisfied with its performance. If you want to listen to calls and music using your car's stereo speakers, I'd skip this unit and instead consider the Motorola or a different bluetooth speakerphone with stronger FM output.

After reading all the reviews, I initially went with the Motorola Roadster. I liked that it had the ability to read text messages (my teenage sons favorite way to communicate with me) and that it turned on automatically when I got in the car. Once I had it, it works basically as stated but the sound quality was so poor and the fm transmitter was poor. I bought the Jabra 2 and have been using it for the past few days. I was so surprised when the voice came on reading me a text message! Motorola doesn't tell you this but the app MotoSpeak works with other units! Not only that but the quality of speech is far superior on the Jabra unit. So far, I'm really happy with it. Both units pair with 2 devices, both have FM transmitters, both use voice commands.

Based on my primary uses, here's my list of pros/cons for each

Jabra: Pros

Voice dialer is accurate

Display lights are easy to see.

Connects very quickly with my phone.

Good sound from the unit itself

Better FM transmitter (Washington D.C. area airwaves are packed but I get clear sound all around town)

Nice loud sound from unit, can use it if FM station isn't available.

Announces name of caller/texter

When using with GPS, it is clear and uninterrupted.

Cons:

Doesn't turn on automatically, easy to forget

can't dictate a text response

Points for Motorola roadster: Pros

Automatically turns on when I get in the car

Uses motospeak to play texts

More voice commands. Can just say "answer" or "ignore" for incoming call.

Can dictate a text response

Cons:

Voice dial is very inaccurate

Display lights aren't visible, don't know if it lost the connection

If unit is turned off, once turned on, it doesn't connect to phone unless it is first plugged into charger. Could just be a defective unit but a very annoying quirk

sound from unit too low to use in place of FM transmission

Poor FM transmission. Constantly having to change stations which makes it very hands on!

Cuts off the first part of sentece when using phone GPS

only gives phone number not name even though the phone book was downloaded.

I'm keeping the Jabra Cruiser 2 and sending the other back to amazon. Although the ability to dictate a text response is nice, I find it just as easy to call someone back instead. I don't mind having to turn the unit on when I get in the car. If I forget, the unit pairs so quickly that I can do it before I answer a call and not miss the incoming call. Hope that helps!!

In this video, I show you how I paired the speakerphone with my LG Xenon phone.

I also demonstrate the FM compatibility, the ability to play Youtube music, the ease of making a call, and the little extras that come with this device.

Enjoy!

I'm using this with a Sony Ericsson C905a.

Construction Quality: The unit feels great. It's nice and solid, with satisfying weight. It clips on my visor with the wire that doubles as the FM transmitter (clever!) and just feels and looks nice.

Setup: Pairing the device was as simple as a bluetooth headset. A robotic voice comes on when you first turn on the Jabra, walking you through the process. That same voice informed you that it has downloaded your phone book. To connect another phone, just hold down the phone button and the voice repeats the process. Easiest pairing I've ever experienced. The bluetooth will enunciate the names of incoming callers if they are in your phonebook. Setting up the FM transmitter to work was trivially easy. You hit a button on the side marked "FM" and the robot voice tells you the frequency to tune into (and a radio icon lights up). You can hit the + or and the voice will announce a new frequency (these same keys control volume if you aren't using the FM mode).

Performance: The built in speaker is loud, but I much prefer using the FM transmitter. I'm really pleased with the noise cancellation. It's not perfect, but it is much easier to hear, and my wife says I'm easier to hear when I'm talking into this thing. The AD2P -> FM transmitter is a great bonus because my phone has a lot of music on it. The music sounds good, not great (you need a line in for better quality). Honestly, this is probably the biggest surprise for me because I usually hate FM transmitters. Bluetooth reception is also much better than the headsets I'm used to, probably because this device is a little bigger. I can leave my phone in my pocket and make and receive calls.

Battery Life: I have to be honest, I have only tested this for several hours at once between charging. It has been 'on' for 8 hours and handled at least 3 hours of talking without any problems for me, but I don't know how much longer it can last (I suspect much longer). I think I'll be better informed on how well the battery holds up after I've had it for a few months (I'll update this review). The device charges from a USB Micro cable and comes with a car charger adapter.

This little guy works famously, as advertised. But beware, it works TOO GOOD. By that, I mean that the range exceeds that which is practical. So ? So, if you don't remember to switch it off each time you leave the car, and you go into a store, concrete walls or not, if you are still within it's very large radius, you are STILL CONNECTED. If the phone rings, Jabra will answer, even though you will try with your phone in your hand to answer but are prevented. Jabra still trys to connect with your phone as though you are still in the car... Most annoying. If you forget again when parking at home, it will still answer when you get inside. You must remember to switch it off each and every time you leave the vehicle. The only way I could find to override the connectivity and answer the phone in the store or home, was to use the Speakerphone on the phone which commands Jabra to Disconnect. Still, Jabra gets 5-stars for it's clarity, ease of setup, application and faithfulness. :-)

Novothink NT02-BLK Surge Hybrid Solar Charger for iPod touch 2G (Black)

Novothink NT02-BLK Surge Hybrid Solar Charger for iPod touch 2G
  • Power up while walking, running, hiking, or biking, while on the beach, camping, or traveling anywhere.
  • State-of-the-art solar panel technology allows your iPod touch 2G to powerup with the power of the sun.
  • Durable, yet lightweight and slim design.
  • Full access to touch screen.
  • USB connection allows you to charge or sync with iTunes without ever having to take your iPod out of the case.

Probably the biggest complaint you'll get from iPhone/iPod Touch users is concerning the short battery life of the device. Apple wanted to make the iPhone/iPod slim and portable, so they put as small of a battery in it as possible. Unfortunately, if you play a lot of games on your device, this small battery is eaten up quickly. The Novothink Surge is a secondary battery with a solar charger. Charge the Surge by leaving it on a window sill or on the dash board or plug it into any USB port and the built in battery charges up. Slide your iPhone or iPod (make sure you get the right Surge for your device! There are two different versions!!) and you effectively double your batter life. The iPhone/iPod still feels very ergonomic in your hand even with the Surge attached and takes no time to get used to. You can even charge your device while it's docked in the Surge. The Novothink Surge is well worth the money!

As an owner of a solar photovoltaic company, I loved showing off my phone and my "solar" charger. In fact, I used the charger as promotional material and gave away free chargers to those who signed up for my email list. I worked ok but never fully charged in the sun even after hours of full exposure.

Unfortunately, my personal charger melted on my dashboard after 45 minutes in the sun! It was an average Colorado spring day hovering around 68ยบ F so it wasn't unusually hot. The solar component started to warp and the battery bulged out on both sides. I immediately went online and looked up the site looking for a contact #. I called the 888 line and ...oh, had to leave a message. After a day or so, no response. I left a message on their "contact" form. No response. Called again, left a message. No call back. Does this company exist? I believe not.

Don't waste your money on another company with bad customer service. Or NO service at all.

My son got this for his ipod and it has been attached since day one. He loves the extra charge it gives his ipod. The solar charging is a rather slow process that, like all solar chargers, must be left in bright sun. But where this item really shines is as a battery backup.

Beyond lighting up a FALSE indication of charging when connected to a computer thru USB, the charger is all dead both after USB and solar sessions to charge it. I wonder how Apple certified it as suitable. Surely only benefitiary is Apple with its royalty income; all others are taken for a ride!

Never could get the product to charge my iPod, other than by hooking it up to an outlet. What's the point of the solar panel other than misleading decoration? The battery pouch swelled up, breaking the unit apart (see photos) rendering it inoperative. Went to the web site which is inactive, phone number is "not a working number." Amazon should be ashamed to carry such junk from such a shady vendor! I'd give it zero stars if that were permitted.

The product delivered does not match the picture. The travel adapter shown in the picture and mentioned in the description are not included. You get only a USB car charger, that's it. No travel adapter. Showing the travel adapter in the picture and mentioning it in the description when it has nothing to do with what is delivered is nothing but an attempt to deceive the buyer into thinking he will also get a travel adapter. In hindsight, the grammar used in the description is both poor and ambiguous. But the picture is inarguably false and deceptive. I would be very careful in buying anything from desirepro.

Works great charging the IPOD independently of a computer. The IPOD standalone charger by Apple costs $30 and can only charge from household current. This setup costs half as much and works for AC household plus a seperate item that uses a car cigarette lighter.

I purchased the black set of wall and car usb power adapters for my IPod Nano 2g and as far as I can tell they do not work. I plug them in, and then plug my IPod into them, and the charging symbol flashes for a few seconds, however about 4 seconds later the charging symbol goes away.

Guess I'll have to end up purchasing the more expensive version anyways...

I bought this product thinking it would enable me to listen to my 2000+ song collection off my mp3 player in my car (I get bored with CDs reaaaaaaally quickly). It worked like a charm... for about a month. It just stopped one day, wouldn't turn on, didn't respond at all. I notified the company, and they were really great about it, sent me a new one at no charge, and didn't even want me to send the old one back, which I offered to do. The new one was just as great as the first one... and broke in about three months. I have no idea what causes the product to stop working that quickly. It's a great idea, I loved it while it worked, and I had no sound quality issues. But the really short life span is not worth another purchase. I hope they fix it.

Blinc M1 Bluetooth 2.0 Integrated Communication Module Add On for All Helmets

Blinc M1 Bluetooth 2.0 Integrated Communication Module Add On for All Helmets
  • Fits all helmets and can be either removable or permanent using the tools provided
  • 4 hours of continuous talk time and 50 hours of stand by
  • 2 customizable speakers for true stereo sound and a built-in microphone
  • Great for listening to music, GPS direction, taking or making phone calls, even on your iPhone
  • Combine two or more units for rider to rider communications up to 450 meters

Just got the M1 in today and had to hook it up right away. I have not rode with it yet but testing it out around the house I noticed these points:

1. There is a slight static in background

2. The volume is GREAT for listening to music

3. The Music continues to play when using Vlingo (Droid Incredible) when it reads txt messages to me so I can't really hear what the "voice" is saying.

4. Tried calling another person and it worked great...they heard me fine and I can hear them perfect (again have not tried this on the road yet).

5. I mounted mine via the clip and holds tight. Might switch to adhesive mount for cleaner look at a later date.

6. Nice Matte Black finish

7. The cord length is fine...had extra I had to tuck into the helmet.

8. I found the user interface a little annoying to get used to...sometimes holding the button down for the "5" seconds didn't turn off and that type of thing...just have to get used to it.

Will update review upon first ride and test with product.

***4/11/2011 Update***

Product is GREAT!

1. You can't hear static when riding.

2. At 80mph could still hear when calling and person on other end could hear perfect. (I did not have wind blocker on helmet)

3. Once I got used to Blinc M1 the user interface works better.

4. Awesome part of product is that when synced to phone (HTC Incredible) the knob on side can be used to switch between songs!! Great for shuffle option on phone!

5. Clip mount works great...has not moved yet!

6. At just $100 I would highly recommend the purchase...can't beat the convenience.

Buy Blinc M1 Bluetooth 2.0 Integrated Communication Module Add On for All Helmets Now

PROS:

Paid $99 with free shipping. That's the cheapest one I've seen so far.

Controls are easy to use with gloves on, the dial for changing music tracks is very nice.

Loud. I can hear music at freeway speeds inside my full-face helmet.

People could understand me on the phone at 40mph.

CONS:

No dedicated plug for the charger, shares the same plug as the speaker/microphone assembly. You have to unplug one to plug the other in.

Proprietary charger plug.

The "clip" fastener was useless for me because the plug for the headset wiring sticks out pretty far and it would hit my shoulder and unplug. Using the stick-on mounting plate to place the unit higher on my helmet solved this.

OTHER:

Volume buttons could be bigger but they're adequate.

Play/Pause is handled by holding the "volume down" button for 3 seconds. Odd but acceptable.

It comes with a boom mic, it would have been better with a mic made specifically to go inside a full-face helmet.

I've owned the M1 for about a month now and have done about 250-300 miles using it. It does what it claims to do, which is why I gave it 4/5 stars but there are a few things that are really annoying.

Setup is easy, however, if you own a SHOEI RF1000 Helmet don't expect this unit to fit as easily as you see in the videos on Youtube. Unlike most of the helmets you see portrayed in the demos online the Shoei RF1000 does not allow you to pop out the rear padding of the helmet. I had to shove (with a pencil eraser) the wire between the helmet and the padding till it got stuck up there. So Shoei owners, and people who own helmets with a permanently attached rear padding, beware.

The microphone works great (I can only speak as to full-face helmet use)and up to 60 miles an hour the person on the other line doesn't really notice any difference. You can carry a conversation at 70 MPH but you will be straining a little. The speakers work great but I have a constant low buzz/squeaky noise coming from them when I get a call. I have yet to use this device to listen to music but I imagine you could hear music just fine no matter the speed. I ride a Honda 919 with Sato pipes so if your bike is quiet you could possibly get even better results.

I wish that there was some kind of clip holding the usb cables from the wiring to the unit as over time, I can definitely see the cables just falling out of the unit while going fast.

This is easy to use and setup and works pretty well. I will update this review once I get another m1 to communicate with my wife.

Want Blinc M1 Bluetooth 2.0 Integrated Communication Module Add On for All Helmets Discount?

Well it works... It's loud enough to hear even with straight pipes, but it's super weak when it comes to picking up the blouetooth signal from my phone. It cuts out a lot once you put the phone in your pocket (very annoying) and if you sweat while you ride then you're gonna hear a lot of static from the headphones. Maybe I just used it too hard cause when I first got it it seemed to function way better, but I don't think I've been rough on it. It does charge quick and lasts a good while. My biggest problem is the fact that it doesn't pick up the signal from my pocket, and if it does pick it up it cuts out as soon as you turn your head to look over your shoulder. Pay a little more and get better quality.

I bought this on a whim because I wanted to be able to listen to music on long rides. I opted for the permanent installation because the clip wouldn't fit my helmet. The clip was too small to fit around the bottom of my helmet (AFX DS-39 Awesome helmet BTW). So I carefully placed the speakers where they would fit comfortably on my ears, routed the wires through the bottom of the helmet and put everything back together. It was great, I had minimal wires showing where they connected to the unit and the speakers were just fine on the comfort scale.

I paired my phone to the unit and started playing some music. IT WORKED! Next, I wanted to test it on the road.

So I have a dual sport bike with a small Enduro tank bag. The tank bag has a velcro piece that sits on top with a clear plastic window that you can slide things in to. This, I figured, would be the perfect place to put my phone as it was the closest location to the bluetooth unit without being tied to my helmet (/joke).

Bottom line, this thing is crap. The phone was no more than 1.5 feet away from my helmet at all times and the signal would cut in and out. I'd rather listen to wind noise. It went a little something like this... 2 seconds of music, silence, 4 seconds of music, 5 seconds of silence, 2 seconds of music... you get the picture.

I could not, in good faith, recommend this to anyone in the market for a bluetooth helmet system. I am either going to sell this piece of junk or try to return it. I am very disappointed but that's what I get for buying the cheapest thing on the market.

BMW USB Charger

BMW USB Charger
  • USB charging device offers a convenient way to provide power to a wide array of portable and mobile devices. The charger converts your vehicle's conventional 12V power outlet to a fixed 5V high-current USB charging port. Simply insert the BMW USB charger into your vehicles power outlet.
  • The green LED indicator provides visual identification that the device is active, and can then be connected to all USB-supported charging cables.
  • The high-loading current of 1,200 mA allows charging for smartphones, MP3 players, all Apple iPods, iPhones and iPad's as well as most other portable devices.

Let me just say one thing: this will charge your iPhone 4S and iPad! The other product have not enough power (mA) to charge iPads. This looks good and functions well. It fits into outlet next to ashtray in 3-series but you won't be able to close the lid. I use it in the outlet in the armrest.

While this charger will cost you a little more than a Belkin or similar, it's worth the extra cost. Added plus is the flip-up handle for easy removal.

I purchased this charger from "Auto Good Parts". While I don't think being an official BMW accessory will make this any more reliable than a good name brand charger, my hope was that it would fit properly in my car (a 2001 BMW 5-series). My car's 12v power outlet pops up and folds down into the center console. With most chargers, I am unable to close the power port without first removing the charger. This BMW charger fits perfectly and I am able to close the power port without removing the adapter.
