I've looked around at different chargers, and this one stands out. It offers many features of a higher priced charger for a lower price, like battery desulfation. I recently used this charger to top up my car battery, because I drive short distances which doesn't give the alternator enough time to recharge after starting. It is also convenient in the fact that the cables store in the unit, and it has a carrying handle. The manual that comes with it is very good as well, explains in depth how to use the charger and safety precautions. A nice feature is the automatic incorrect polarity detection, which makes it easy to use. It is also a nice size box to keep in the trunk. The only con is the dim display, which is pretty dim.

I found the charger's display to be much too dim for daylight viewing. I have seen two chargers and they were both that way. It looks good in very low light or at night, but in sunlight it is just impossible to tell what is going on. Just another note be patient after you connect it to the battery as it can take over a minute for the charging process to start.

This is incorrect , it only has clip leads in which the gap in the clip is too large to fit the 8mm bolt head on side terminal batteries(that's why there's ring terminals NOT INCLUDED). So this will only work on some but not all of my cars.

As most of the other reviews stated, the display is dim. Infact, mine is so dim that I usually cannot see the lights or volt/amperage meter without putting a dark towel around my head head and the charger to see what it's saying. Even at night it is less than 'good'. If you are patient and good with puzzles, you can get the cords back into it's neat storage compartment. The charger itself seems to do a good job once you blindly pick the right setiings, but putting your face to the electronics and sometimes battery and engine area is dangerous. I have had this unit for about 10 months and use it for both boat and cars. It was purchased through Amazon but I can not recommend it since someone is bound to get injured trying to read the dimly lit display. How did this ever pass Duracell design approval? Oh, made in China.

I'm a bit of a technophile, and gadgets like thin film solar panels really raise my eyebrows. Aside from the WOW factor, there is the practical application of the device.

I'm in the Army, and two things are important to me. Portable power and ease of transport. I have owned Brunton Solar products before, namely the Solaris 25,and it did a terrific job providing me power but at the cost of size and limited use for high power consuming devices. The Brunton Solaris 52 was the answer.

Other solar products tell you that they can charge portable devices....but how many of them can actually RUN them. The answer is a resounding zip....zero....nada. The Solaris 52 can power your device, and provide a trickle charge to other applications. It is voltage regulated once devices are connected, so while the panels can produce upwards of 28 volts....it is paired down to 12 volts for your devices.

The Solaris 52 is about the size of a regular textbook. The folding cover has a Velcro closed pocket for the three types of cables provided with the device, and even with those cables in the front pocket the device presents a minimal profile in your pack. The panels are applied to a thin type of waterproof canvas. It's a sturdy material which retains the folding pattern of the panels so set up an tear down are a snap.

I tested this unit late on an overcast day. I live in Kansas, so I am not in one of the peak sun belts, and I tested this unit during one of the coldest months in this region. The panel was completely unfolded, I connected it to my Solo 15, and even with a considerable amount of cloud cover the device kicked out the promised 12 volts of DC. I watched the charged device closely to see how much tinkering I would have to do to get maximum output from the panels....the answer...NONE! I was amazed by just how simple, elegant and effective this device truly turned out to be.

I continued to run tests with my voltmeter and found that on top of the steady 12 volts I was able to use the available second power adaptor port to charge my cellphone at the same time. This additional flow was no where near what was being drawn by my Solo 15, but it was still more than enough to charge my phone very quickly.

What Brunton has produced here is an efficient, lightweight and extremely capable portable power plant that will require no maintenance from the user due to the self-healing qualities of the newly developed CIGS cells. All the device needs is a little cleaning with a cloth every now and then to remove dirt or debris...that's it!

The price is a little halting for most. I Realize that, but rest assured you are paying for quality and the assurance that you will have electricity anywhere you need it as long as the sun is in the sky. That kind of reassurance is truly worth he price. As the CIGS technology becomes more mainstream, which it will, expect prices to drop. Or just be a savvy consumer....I picked my Solaris 52 up here on Amazon for around $680. A steal in my opinion.

Imagine being able to take electricity anywhere you go so long as you have sunlight. This device might seem a bit costly, but you definitely get what you pay for. It will power most laptops, most high-powered electronic devices, and most battery chargers. You can even use it to charge your car or boat's battery. Just plug any 12v device into it or hook up its jumper cables. What you'll need to use it as something similar to a standard household outlet is another device called the Solo 15, which is is a lithium battery pack that comes with an included AC/DC inverter. All together all of this equipment should weigh less than 10 pounds.

To figure out whether this device will be enough to run your laptop with a positive net charge, calculate the wattage of your laptop. My laptop is an old Dell Inspiron 1100, which runs off 20 volts & 4.5 Amps. So, the formula to calculate wattage (Volts x Amps = Watts) tells me that my laptop requires 90 watts. That means that I won't get enough energy out of this to keep my laptop running all day. In order to do that, I'd need two sets of solar panels to connect together. However, since I'm still getting a charge, I can use this to slow the discharging of my laptop battery and extend my overall playtime. However, once powered off, this would be enough to charge it. Newer laptops are more energy efficient, so this may be just enough or more than enough power for you.

You'd be surprised what you can accomplish with this. I've read online about a woman who lives off the grid and powers her fridge with this.

All in all, this is the top-of-the-line when it comes to foldable solar array panels meant for personal travel purposes. A steal at this price.

This foldable Brunton panel certainly produces more power than any other little portable panel. It is truly amazing in that regard -around 3 amps of power in direct sunlight.

Somehow I must have fried the voltage regulator on mine, because it puts out 26volts even when connected to devices and batteries seeking only 12 volts. I ran the current, using the clamps, through a volt-meter, as the power comes out of the panel, before it goes into a Brunton SOLO 15W (12volt lithium-polymer battery).

The meter still reads 26 volts or so, not 12volts. The panel's "regulator" is supposed to drop it to 12volts if that's all the device needs, right?

The manual for the SOLO 15 says it can be directly connected to any portable Solaris panel ... but 12volt batteries, including the SOLO 15, simply cannot handle a 26 volt charging current. That will ruin the battery, and I've already done that once ...

I did, however, accidentally connect a 12v battery to it with the wrong polarity one occasion, so that may have fried the regulator. But any day now I will be receiving another Solaris 52 -a brand new one. I'll connect it to a Brunton SOLO 15 and see if the voltage coming in and out is "regulated" to 12 volts before I do anything else to the panel.

I'll give an update after that little experiment.

It would be really nice if it does automatically regulate down to 12v, without needing an external 24v-to-12v converter, because two of these Solaris 52 panels together could re-charge the best portable 12volt power source for your money -the Duracell 600 (Xantrex 600 under the Duracell label) -in only a few hours (hypothetically will be able to confirm in a few days).

Two of those big batteries will power the most power hungry laptops for 12 hours, and Mac's for twice that long. They hold 28aH of juice. If you've got four of the Duracell 600's to capture and store all the power these Solaris panels can generate in one day... then you should be able to keep any laptop going 24 hours from stored sunlight power only. A Duracell 600 costs only about $.

It is kinda sad that Brunton's SOLO 15 lithium 12v battery is so fragile (and costs $), because they are so light and small ... two of them would provide (hypothetically) almost as much power (24aH) as one Duracell 600s (28aH) ... with one fifth the weight, and half the size.

When I say "fragile" I don't mean it breaks easily from rough handling. They are actually very sturdy in that regard. The fragility relates to how the battery stops working properly after only a few uses, especially when they are drained completely while charging a laptop, or perhaps charged with too much voltage from a malfunctioning Solaris 52 panel ...

Brunton will have a winner if those SOLO 15 batteries can be redesigned with better circuitry to protect them from the common things that will hurt any battery: excessive discharge, and over-the-limit voltage while charging.

As for the Solaris 52 foldable panel itself ... the bottom line:

Even if I fried the built-in voltage regulator through my own error, or those voltage regulators don't always do what they are supposed to, and therefore I must use a small external 24v-to-12v converter, like the one made by Velleman (costs less than $) ... then it's still a very worthwhile product.

There are many things on the plus side. My favorite is how small it reduces to when folded. I also love how fast I can set it up on a vehicle windshield facing the sun. Then all that energy baking my dashboard is transformed into juice for my laptop ... pretty cool.

Let's hope Brunton's partners in China start acting more like the Japanese and refining the quality of these winning designs, rather than merely figuring out how to make more of them, and make them faster and cheaper. Focus on the quality and feature improvement first. Then you'll have some VERY popular must-have products for people who might want to use their laptops in the great outdoors ... like me.

Update:

The Solaris 52 is powerful indeed ... but it may be TOO powerful for many gadgets. I just received the second Solaris 52 and tested it various ways in direct sunlight. I needed to test a brand new one, right out the box, to make sure I wasn't getting skewed results from the one I THOUGHT I had accidentally damaged ... But the brand new one behaves exactly the same way ... so I did not damage the first one afterall. That's a good thing and a bad thing. It's a bad thing because the Solaris 52 is definitely NOT a "12 Volt solar panel" ... They really should not call it that. That claim is dangerously misleading.

The Solaris 52 goes WAY over 12volts under normal direct sunlight conditions (more than twice that voltage, actually). Most 12volt devices will fry if the input power is above 16vdc! The Solaris 52 package itself says the voltage will vary with the amount of sunlight, but it does not say the output will become regulated down to 12volts if attached to a device only needing 12volts. No, the panel cannot tell the difference, and it will hit a connected device with whatever voltage is being generated -up to 26vdc. It can easily go as high as 26vdc in direct sun.

The only way to bring down the output voltage to around 12 volts, without a converter, is to have two 12volt devices plugged in at the same time (there are two (2) power ports on the Solaris 52). That will split the voltage nicely to about 12 volts per port ... but it cuts the amps in half also.

Sometimes you want to have all the amps powering a single 12volt battery!

That must be what other users are doing -they must be using both power ports simultaneously, to get 12volts with half the amps ... because otherwise there would be a lot of damaged devices out there, and some very irate customers. I would not want to be a customer service person for Brunton, because the manual for this does not sufficiently warn users what can happen.

I will soon be receiving a proper 24vdc to 12vdc converter, and then I'll be returning Brunton's "Solar Controller" because it doesn't do voltage regulation/conversion for currents as high as what the Solaris 52 will put out. The Brunton Solar Controller will be damaged by the Solaris 52 in full sunlight while recharging a big 12volt battery.

The package for the Solar Controller says to ONLY use them with 12volt solar panels ... It is mainly designed to prevent over-charging (with respect to amps) of big 12volt batteries, like the ones in RV's and cabins and boats.

The manual for the Brunton SOLO 15 lithium battery says you can definitely connect a Solaris 26 (not a Solaris 52) solar panel to it ... It doesn't mention Solaris 52 at all.

Bottom line: It's a mighty powerful, portable solar panel, but the "12volt" output is NOT regulated, either as an open current, or when powering devices. To use it safely in full sun you must either be powering two 12volt devices at once ... or you must use a 24vdc to 12vdc converter to keep it from hurting some of your gadgets.

I am really surprised that the manual for the Solaris 52 does not provide adequate guidance in that respect. It wouldn't be so hard to do. One more paragraph would do it guys!

I purchase this Brunton Solaris 52 CIGS to charge the battery on my tent trailer during my trips. I do not camp in campsites where there is a direct power source. I camp mostly out in the open BLM land area. I connect the Solaris to the top of the tent trailer with a connection going directly to the Brunton Charger Unit to control the charge for no overcharge of the battery. I have been using this carkit for almost a year and I am very pleased with the product quality. Over the year I have used the carkit with a few different cell phone models without any problem any minor issues that I have had were resolved by either consulting the user manual or visiting product-support website.

When I used the carkit for the first time I felt that the volume was not loud enough but the product support website had instructions on how to fix that problem the fix required adjusting the incoming-call volume on the cell phonewhich on most phones is adjusted while you are on a phone call. The volume adjustment is required again only if the phone settings are reset.

To use voice dialing from the carkit, when it's paired with my Motorola V3, I have to press the call button twice, instead of just once as documented in the user manual. Again, I found detailed instructions on voice dialing on product support website.

My wife uses my car sometimes, so my carkit has pairing information saved for her phone as well, which makes it easier for her to use the carkit while using my car as it does not require to repeat the pairing process.

Most of the voice prompts are very helpful, but I specially like the "end of call" prompt, because with most of the bluetooth handsfree devices you cannot tell if the call has ended, unless you look at the cell phone screen.

I purchased this item to compare with my other BT car kit Motorola T305 (reliable connection but not so great in sound and indication). It turns out this unit is a complete opposite.

The good sound quality, including the British-accent voice prompt from the device. It's good to know the current status of the unit and what it is doing. The volume is loud and clear. Never see the low-battery indication as I charge only once a week. (The power outlet on my car doesn't have power when the car is off and is mostly used for my radar detector.)

The bad connectivity: it took me 5 times to successfully pair with my Treo when I receive it. Once it's connected, it's often to drop the connection and pick up again after a few seconds. Occasionally it doesn't pick up anymore. Although so far it never drops the connection DURING a phone conversation, it's quite annoying to have to worry about it.

There is another unit almost identical but a little more expensive on amazon.com. May that's what the extra money is spent for.......

I was excited to get this product and finally be able to speak "hands free" while driving my vehicle. I have tried other blue tooth devices that fit over the ear and have never liked the way any of them have fit. I have three cell phones (one for personnal and two for work) and was looking forward to a device that could connect to all three. After using this device for a few days I was terribly disappointed with the perfomance. I continued to use it for several more weeks hoping for an improvement, but no luck. I have listed my opinions for pro's and con's to help you decide.

Pros: Holds a charge for several days and comes with an included car charger. Very large, bright LCD display for incoming calls. Voice prompts with number. Sorry, that's all of the good stuff.

CONS: Pairs to each of my three phones with no problem.... but NOT simultaneously. It automatically pairs to my work phone (the primary pairing) when the unit is initially turned on. The device won't pair with one of the other phones unless the primary is turned off or out of range. In other words, if my personnal phone rings, the device WON'T automatically swith to that device. This is a huge inconveinence and makes the multiple pairing feature virtually USELESS to me. Also, the speaker volume is TOO LOW, even at the maximum volume setting. What does this mean? It means I really CAN'T HEAR what the person I'm having a conversation with is saying. But that almost doesn't matter because everyone I've spoken to on the device has complained about not being able to hear me, or the line having TOO MUCH STATIC. Also, the voice dialing feature on my cell phone DOES NOT WORK through this device. In other words, I still have to pick up the cell phone and dial the digits on the keypad in order to make a call. There are other negatives, but I think you get the point.

My opinion is this is a TERRIBLE product, especially for the money paid ($60 plus shipping). I only wish someone else had taken the time to write a review prior to me WASTING MY MONEY on this.

I own two of these excellent chargers they are very simple to operate and very durable.

The chargers are weatherproof, and you can permanently mount them in the engine compartment with the provided ring terminals, or just use the alligator clips.

The charger has a battery status indicator (low / full), and settings for Motorcycle, Car, or Gel battery. The charger cycles from trickle current, to pulses, and shuts off when the battery is full. This charger, as well as the current (more popular) Battery Tender chargers are both made in China. This charger seems to be superior to my Battery Tender chargers in that it appears to be well sealed, of a more modern design, spark proof. Enclosed in a two piece cast housing, not an aluminum box. The charging algorithms will bring back a sulphated battery in some cases. It has three different charging settings, and brought my sulphated APC UPS battery back to limited life. It is particularly well suited for small motorcycle size batteries as well as larger batteries. It may be left connected indefinitely.

This is a great charger. Our family van doesn't get driven much during certain times of the year so it sits in the garage. It's on its second battery and I am determined to keep this one fresh and topped off. I use it for my Chinese 150cc scooter, as it turned out 7x series of batteries are not common compare to 5 or 9 (number as I found out refers to weight, although in case of this battery it's also Amps) It's not AGM, but GEL type, but it's rated same amperage, so I expect to work same. I killed my last battery and local place wanted 82 dollars with tax, at this price I could get two of these and still would cost me less. I like the clear plastic at the top and a piece of clear plastic that slides open and reveals 6 rubber caps, makes me wonder if it's truly "maintenance free" as it says if there is not enough acid, I should add it. Among the brands of GMRS/FRS radios, Cobra is the only one I've found to use Li-ion batteries. Compared to other rechargeable battery technologies, Li-ion will last longer and weigh less. Cobra has three models in their flagship category: 925, 825, 725. I chose the 825 for a few reasons.

Compared to the 925, this model lacks the voice recorder and has lower battery capacity. Without the voice recorder, if you miss something, I think it's a matter of asking people to repeat their message. Although the 925 battery capacity is higher, the voice recorder increases the power draw, so it may offset and result in similar battery life. The main differences between the 725 is the capability to receive NOAA weather broadcasts; I believe the batteries and the outside form factor are the same.

They advertise different communication ranges (35, 30, 27) in miles. I'm skeptical and wish there were more truth in advertising. However, for casual users, you're probably within 5 miles. These types of GMRS/FRS radios do not work well inside cars unless you have an external antenna. If used properly, they work reasonably well. I've been able to communicate within 10 miles. For the purists, the 925 and 825 have three transmit power levels (5, 2, 0.5 watts) while the 725 has only two (5, 0.5 watts).

So far, I can think of only one drawback I wish Cobra makes a car charger. Their website says you may purchase parts and build your own, just call them for wiring info.

This is a strange walkie-talkie. First rate engineering with a second rate execution. It even looks a little strange with a cheap clear plastic grill on the front. This walkie-talkie is also one of the smallest on the market.

It is a very straight-forward and easy walkie-talkie to program. Much easier than the Midland, if you don't mind the NOAA blaring in the speakers each time you go through it to get the programming steps you need to change.

It had a strange way of fitting in the recharge base. It just plops in one way and easily wobbles, but it makes contact all the time.

Most of the commonly needed buttons are right on the front, not like others that make you dig through or do some button looping to get what you want. There is even a separate backlight on-button on the side.

The backlight does not evenly cover the LCD like many other comunication devices, but rather it is two lighted LED'S on either side of the display. Cheap, but it works.

The rechargeable batteries is put in a square sealed plastic case and difficult to remove from the walkie-talkie, luckily you shouldn't be doing that often.

The VOX works like all the others. Not very sensitive, but it will work if you learn to talk loud and even practically yell on the least sensitive adjustment. It has 5 adjustments.

Have not tried any accessory with it. But it should work in ordinary use if you just like to hold the Cobra in your hand and talk and recieve. It has all the ability built in to exceed the basics too, should your needs go further than that.

To use the high-range mode everyone knows "buy" now you have to get an FCC license, but in FRS free mode of a few miles or blocks depending on obstacles can be obtained.

I also found out it cannot use most Midland accessories due to different pin configurations.

Bottom Line: If you want a straigh-forward minimal-fuss walkie talkie and just want to start talking this will probably be the one you want.

They are great! Fifteen of us went on a very large cruise ship and we used them to keep in touch since there was no cell phone service. The security code feature meant that we only heard each other and no one else even if they were on the same channel. They made the cruise much more enjoyable.

These radios are fantastic! They are certainly better than the walkie-talkies we had when I was younger. 4 and a half stars, but amazon doesn't let me put in a half star.

First off, the bad: Everyone should know by now the distances claimed are an engineers whimsical notion, not related to reality. That goes for any hand held *consumer* radio. (minus 1/2 star for fibbing)

The reality: I bought 4-pair of these radios for a cruise with the extended family. I tested these localy on LOW power in a heavily populated residential area and they have a half mile range for me. It was crystal clear up until 1/2 mile, then nothing. I switched to a channel that it is legal to use high power on and I had about 1.1 miles or so range, but at any point after the 1/2 mile there was static in the reception even on high power. I never used any of the advanced features like turning off the auto squelch or whatever. Maybe you can get more distance.

The good: I was worried about the amount of people on the cruise and all the metal between these radios. I kept them on one of the high power channels in high power mode. There was never a problem! I think the ship was almost a thousand feet long and it didn't matter how many metal walls/floors/etc there were. My father-in-law was at the very front of the ship and I was in the aft dining room and we were talking like we were side-by-side. We used them on the excursion to Atlantis and we did get seperated, even on different busses headed back to the ship and these kept us in contact the entire time with one brief exception.

I love the lock button. It prevents you from changing channels and whatnot, but you can still use the call button. This was great to prevent grandpa from stuffing it in his pocket and accidentally switching to a different channel. So all he had to know was press the button and talk.

The amazing: The Lithium Ion batteries in these radios are un-real! I charged up all 4 sets of radios before the cruise and we never had to charge them the entire trip! The other 3 families left them on all night every night. Our cruise was a 4 day, 3 night cruise and on high power they worked great. The battery power warning icon isn't even lit yet. If it is a longer cruise than what I had, bring the charger, otherwise just charge at home and don't worry about it. And these Li-Ion batteries should last for years, not like the Nickel based rechargeables the other brands use.

The mediocre: They look a little funny and that "Call" button is increadibly annoying when a 10 year old boy has one of these units... He pressed that button and it makes a phone-call sounding ring and that's fine, but when he presses it fifty times in a row... Oy Vey. That call function is great when you want to get the attention of the person holding the radio. I could hear it when it was rather noisy so we did get good use out of the call feature. Just keep the nephews under control... :)

I never had to use one of those privacy codes. We did have to switch channels twice to get channels nobody was on, but that's no big deal. When we were on a channel that other people were using it was still OK. They didn't have 5 watts of power like these so you could tell when it was someone else. They would have static and the 'roger' tone when they let go of the transmit button was different than the 'roger' tone these units have.

I used the clip to hang the radio from the neck of my shirt. They are quite light, but still heavy enough to be annoying when hung from the neck. Perfectly fine for a pocket/purse. We also clipped them on the beach bags and took them with us. Worked perfectly.

What they lacked: The only thing I saw another radio have that would've been nice was a built in LED flashlight. We ended up not needing it anyway. They do have a light for the screen, but not a 'flashlight'. The Li-Ion truly was the deciding factor on these though and that far and away outweighs the benefits of a built in flashlight.

The end result: This was the BEST purchase we made for the cruise (yes, even better than the alcohol!) It kept us coordinated without spending loads of time looking for each other. There is no cell phone service out in the atlantic, so this is a must. It let us enjoy our excursions without wasting any of the prescious little time we had looking for each other.

They truly made my cruise much more enjoyable and safer. My daughter ran off in the crowd once, I didn't realize she was running to grandpa. Without radios we would've freaked out and been searching frantically (the crowd was thick). We did freaked out, but called on the radio and within seconds we knew she was with grandpa and where grandpa was.

I would recommend these to anybody taking a cruise or traveling. Bar none, these are great.

As a active amateur radio operator and one who has used professional grade communications equip, these units are quite a bargain at $60 for the pair AND a base charger.

Any serious review has to be done with consideration of price.

My model is the CXR725 Cobra Microtalk.

So far I am VERY impressed with the build quality and audio. The audio is a little tinny sounding, but again; consider price.

Amateur radio Handi-Talkies cost about $300 for one unit.I paid $60 for a pair of the Micro-Talk and the drop in charger!

So anyone posting a negative review is obviously not considering the price.

Concerning range: Forget the advertised claims of 22 miles. Point to point communication is always line of sight with VHF/UHF radios with obstructions, height, weather etc being taken into account. I have verified 3/4 mile solid communication (High power) under average neighborhood use.

If one were on a lake or flat desert, I suppose the range "might" get up to 2 miles.

These radios operate in the UHF spectrum. This is great as it provides greatly reduced interference from man made noise such as power generators, electric motors etc.

*** Of particular interest is the ability to use (CTSS) or (DCS) "Continual Tone Coded Squelch System" or "Digital Coded Squelch."

This technology has been around for years, but until recently not for inexpensive license free handi talkies.

CTCSS and DCS is a inaudible (tone) or (signal) sent from one radio to the other radio. Unless both radios are set to the same CTCSS or DCS code, the two parties can NOT communicate. When the matching code is set in BOTH radios, the radios work normally. This is a wonderful feature when you are attending a event with many people who are also using FRS/GMRS radios. These radios are used by many Non-amateur people since they are license free. NOTE: GMRS requires a no test license from the FCC. I'm not sure how many people really apply for the license, but legally, when operating in the GMRS frequency range, a license "should" be attained.

CTCSS or DCS prevents you from hearing other users of FRS/GMRS radios who might be on the same channel as you. This is great unless you want to eavesdrop on other people. If the other users happen to be using the same CTCSS or DCS code, then you will hear them and they will hear you. There are literally thousands of possible (Channel/CTCSS or DCS) combinations, so the chances of interference are minimal from other parties.

NOTE: CTCSS and DCS operation is not secure or encrypted communication. It only prevents you from hearing others and vice versa. Turning off CTCSS or DCS will allow you to hear anyone using the same channel. (i.e) If the other party is NOT using CTCSS or DCS and is on the same channel as you, they will hear your conversations. If your radios are matched with the same code using CTCSS or DCS, you won't hear them.

Great feature!

I wish Cobra would have added a earphone jack. I can install one myself easily though the average user probably won't. In a high noise environment it is nice to have an ear bud in place rather than straining to hear from a anemic speaker.

I've not yet attempted to exhaust the battery. Battery life is dependent on several factors. Power setting, talk time and battery technology. These radios use Lithium Ion Technology which is great if designed properly; so I anticipate good battery life between charges. The manual indicates a completely discharged battery should receive a 15 hr charge. A 4 hr charge would be preferred, but for 60 bucks I would not expect a rapid charger.

BUILD QUALITY: Hey. They cost 60 bucks! If you want Mil Spec you will have to look elsewhere. They are not bad in build quality. I doubt I'd use them if my life depended on it as they are not waterproof and probably would not survive a fall to a hard surface.

I will be thrilled if they last me 3 years. I can see some components failing after a period of time such as the PTT switch; maybe some rocker switches...only time will tell.

PROS: Price...Work well ...Solid Communication...CTCSS/DCS capability...FM UHF reliability...battery life

CONS: Programming can be a little daunting to non radio users...No ear phone jack

For average light daily use, hiking, camping etc..I see no better products out there for the money.

Motorcycle / Bike waterproof Handlebar Mount

• The mount fits handlebars from .75 to 1.5 inches in diameter.

I ordered this waterproof case so that I could mount my Garmin nuvi 255w auto GPS to the handlebars of my mountain bike. The case arrived and included the mounting bracket, as well as foam inserts that allow for padding, in case you have a smaller GPS. It fit my nuvi 255w perfectly and will easily fit a Motorola Droid, or the newer, larger Droid X (which I plan to be using the case for once I upgrade my cell phone).

The mounting bracket installed in seconds. The clamp which goes around the bar is already rubberized and has small ridges that help secure it tightly. The bracket also includes a ball socket, allowing you to rotate it to a portrait orientation if needed. It allows for about 40 degrees of movement from center, letting you tilt the unit if needed. The front window is clear plastic and feels heavy enough to withstand regular usage. My Garmin touchscreen still worked just fine through the plastic. The zipper which encircles the case is vinyl and hides the zipper track, creating a rainproof seal. My GPS/phone will definitely be safe even if I get caught in the heaviest downpour. There is a quick release built in to the bracket as well. It requires a little force to remove it, which is a good thing. I'd rather have it too stiff than have my GPS falling off. There is also an access port at the bottom of the case, in case you need to run headphones and/or power.

I never take the time to write reviews, so I hope this goes to show you how impressed I am with this product.

Pros:

Fits 1" handlebars perfectly, no slipping, secure feeling.

Fits Nuvi 255W just fine.

Easy to use the touch screen through the plastic.

Great value of cost and function.

Easy to remove case from handlebar mount to store GPS.

Can use the cradle the GPS provides if you don't want to use the waterproof case.

Opening for wire is great for power cord, yet is flexible enough to keep water out.

Easy to adjust the angle to accommodate different handlebar bends.

Cons:

Cannot turn off unit without opening case (but that's the tradeoff for waterproof, though).

Lightweight plastic construction makes me a little uneasy, looks like the handlebar mount can crack if accidentally overtightened. But again, this is a great value item. If I wanted commercial grade, I would have bought the more unsightly RAM mount.

Not able to permanently affix to handlebars, nor is it lockable but hey, what more do you expect at this price?!

Purchased this to mount my Garmin 765T to my Honda VTX1300R. Works great and have used it in some light rain. GPS is behind a fairing so this mount will have no problem keeping mine dry. Easy to mount and included some rubber spacers which keep it from rotating on the bars while pushing the touch screen and protect the bars from scratching. Took it on a 280 mile trip and was able to tighten the screws a bit when I checked them at the destination, so I would recommend a little blue Loctite to keep vibration at bay. If the screws loosen fully you will lose the nut out the back of the mount. I glued the nuts in from the back so this won't happen. The nuts are recessed in a hex well so only a screwdriver is needed to tighten things up. Very intelligent design feature since most bikes have windshields which make getting a wrench behind the mount difficult. Granted the mount is plastic but it is a thick high grade plastic and I have no worries about it's durability. Touch screen works fine through the clear front panel with no reduction in visibility. Mount holds the GPS in place well, never vibrated down while riding and it takes a firm push to displace it once positioned. The locking collar on the ball swivel never came loose due to vibration after 600 miles on the trip. GPS was a breeze to fit into the case due to several sheets of foam that come with the mount and can be stacked until the unit is kept in place tightly and even cut to make room for your power cord should it not plug in at the top or bottom. I mounted mine with the power cord coming out the top so the zipper tab wouldn't scratch my speedo cover. Very nice mount and I highly recommend it. Excellent value and quality.

I purchased this for my dad so he could use his GPS while out riding his motorcycle. He had been carrying it around in his pocket and I wanted him to have better access. He loves it, says it's great, other than one thing: the GPS unit gets "hot as a firecracker" due to lack of ventilation. I guess that's a price you pay for water resistance.

If you have an Apple iPhone 3G, then you probably have the same three complaints that everyone else does:

1) No video camcorder

2) No flash

3) Battery life is poor

Well, the Kensington Mini Battery Extender helps address the third flaw. I also bought an Incase Power Slider because I was wondering how they compared. I had read reviews and heard from people that the Mophie Juice Pack had problems with the rubber case falling off, so I decided to skip that one, although I played around with it a bit before buying the Incase.

All these products perform their basic function admirably they charge your iPhone when you don't have access to an outlet. I can't actually compare which one recharges the most or for the longest, but it's pretty safe to say that they should take care of you through most typical situations (e.g. a transcontinental flight, a busy day on the phone, or a night out with friends after a long day at work). Unless you are Jack Bauer and have a magical cell phone that never runs down, chances are that any of these will keep you in power.

But the fit and finish of these products is the real differentiator (along with price). In reverse order, are my preferences:

3) Mophie Juice Pack: Adds a little bulk to the iPhone, but the rubber covering can cause problems in the long run. But I also didn't like the design it only partially covers the iPhone, leaving the top part exposed. Seemed awkward to me, combine that with the high price, and this wouldn't be my first (or second) choice.

2) Kensington Mini Battery Extender: The design is very awkward. Other owners had talked about keeping it attached while using the phone not only does the connection feel flimsy (making me fear that the dock connector would be damaged), but it also looks unattractive. I'd only use this in an emergency situation or if I wasn't planning on using the phone at the same time. The only reason I have it as my second choice is because the price is right for less than $35 (MSRP is $39), you can have the same power backup as with the Mophie or the Incase. If you are on a budget, then this is a great option. Another possible scenario is if you want to have more than one battery extender/charger you can get three of these for the same price as one of the others.

1) Incase Power Slider: By far, the Power Slider had the best design. The two-part design completely encases the iPhone, increasing the dimensions only slightly. It's a little wider, a little longer, a little thicker, and a little heavier. But it's a very natural look, and most people wouldn't even realize it's also a battery pack. It's pretty easy to put on and take off, and feels like a second skin in the end without impeding the camera. But it is harder to access buttons, so I don't plan on using this on a daily basis only when I travel.

SUMMARY: Like I said, any of these will do the basic job, but the Kensington will do it cheaper and the Incase will do it in style.

Wanted to confirm that this works with Iphone 3g just fine. You can keep using your Iphone and listening to music etc while this is attached (it puts it into charging mode like plugging it into a wall outlet). Hoping to use this for my plane travel this week will report on battery life.

Also, wanted to say that this seems to charge fine with my Belkin Iphone charger (the set where you get wall and car charger with usb plug ins on both) it's really nice because the wall charger has two usb outlets so you can charge both the battery and Iphone at the same time without a laptop etc.

I tested this charger on my iPhone(first iphone version when they just came out.)

I drained my iphone down to 10% warning and plugged in a fully-charger Kensington Battery. It took about 70 minutes until the charger's juice was gone and it powered my iPhone to about 50%. Surely enough, 3 hours later of constant texting, my iphone gave me the 10% business.

The Good:

Truly Portable. Dimensions are 2.5 x 2 x 0.5 inches. (I'm not sure why at the time of this review, it shows dimensions as 5.2 x 6 x 1.5 units. I pondered why this was the case, and it turns out that these dimentions are in centimeters.) Dimensions blend in well with your iPhone: it doesn't stick out, but just extends the lenght of your iphone by 2 inches.

Charge and use your phone at same time: No need to wait til the power transfers.

Stylish: Yes, I said "stylish." Every time I plug this in, the other iPhone users turn their heads and wonder what my little attachment does. The brightly-lit blue energy bar really stands out and lets you charge in style.

Tiny charging retractible USB cable: While its 4 inches in closed position, its retractible up to 2 feet at full lenght. Its fully compatible with iphone's usb plug adapter, so you can charge your battery on the plug OR using computer's USB slot.

The Bad:

For emergencies only. It would be nice if this portable charger had more juice capacity than 50% of the iPhone's battery. Because of this, I don't carry it as much and only take it with me for emergency purposes. Its a good thing to keep in your car's glove compartment or at home for those blackouts.

Bottom Line: Perfect for emergencies, but will leave you wishing for more juice in the long run.

With my morning 30 minute conference calls, I barely get by each day without needing to recharge my iPhone.

What drew me to this was the all in one style design. No cables or mess to deal with. Here's the low down:

Cons:

Simultaneous charging (connected to my Macbook Pro) took a little longer than preferred, but I guess it was because my iPhone was completely dead.

Pros:

Tiny battery pack was able to charge my iPhone to about 65% from dead which was impressive in a relatively short period of time

Battery indicator was extremely helpful

Small enough to keep in my pocket without the weight and bulk

The smartest thing about this battery pack is that it leaves about a 1.5mm gap on the bottom of the iPhone so the microphone isn't blocked. Genius.

Oh yeah, it comes with a plastic cap to protect the connector if you toss it in your work bag or something.

Just got this battery from amazon today. It works great.

To test it out on my new 3G iPhone, I drained the phone's battery completely. The external battery was not charged out of the box so I fully charged the external battery through my computer, which took about 3 hours. Then I attached the charged external battery to the iPhone. I kept the iPhone off while it was being charged by the external battery. The external battery charged my iPhone back to 80% battery life. The charge took about 1 hour.

Also, I have a case on the iPhone and did not encounter any issues with charging the phone with the external battery. The case did not have to come off!

Excellent product. I'll use this just about daily at work/home.
