BRUNTON 81-300696 SOLAR CHARGER, SOLARFLAT2-SOLAR,

BRUNTON 81-300696 SOLAR CHARGER, SOLARFLAT2-SOLAR,Seems well constructed. Has an aluminum frame as mentioned in the description. My only suggestion to make it truly weather proof would be a slightly better seal on the rear terminal block housing. I may silicon it or do something to better seal it for the environment I will be using it in. I considered sealing around the frame but this would seem redundant. The frame appears to just provide physical as opposed to environment protection for the panel. The panel itself seems to be sealed by virtue of how it is constructed.

It also comes with a nice selection of adapters(Cigarette Lighter, Alligator clamps, bare ended pigtail), and an LED adapter plug to check function. I purchased it to trickle charge a battery in a 16KW Backup Generator at a vacation property. I now realize that I really do not need it as the Generator is charging the battery regardless as long as it is connected to grid power. I may use it for my boat.

I keep a 19' skiff with a 90 hp outboard on it on a trailer at our beach condo. For the past 4 years this Brunton solar charger has kept my boat battery completely charged and ready to go even when the boat sits idle for six months or more. Before purchasing the charger, putting the boat in the water for the first time each season was a major pain as the battery would be completely dead and would have to be charged before the boat would start and before the power tilt would lift the motor to get the boat cover off. The charger remains connected to the battery and rests outside on the boarding ladder where it gets sunshine through the winter months. There is always plenty of charge on the battery. Now I put the boat in the water and hit the start key. There is plenty of charge for multiple cranking attempts if the motor is reluctant to fire up. It's perfect for my purposes.

Scosche IP2IN1 iPod/Universal USB Charger for Home and Car

Scosche IP2IN1 iPod/Universal USB Charger for Home and Car
  • Charge any USB device including phones, MP3 players, Blackberries, headphones and more
  • For use with existing iPod USB cable
  • Includes USB 12V charger and 100V wall charger
  • Connects to most USB powered devices.
  • Folding prongs for storage and travel.
  • 1 amp makes recharging as fast as possible

I bought this USB charger 3 months ago to use with my iPod touch and it has worked flawlessly. The wall charger is very portable as the plug folds into the body of the charger. Both seem to charge the iPod equally well and I have not noticed the charging to be any different from connecting the iPod to the computer. One minor (if obvious) downside is that you need to bring the USB cable along in the car or to other locations where you will not connect to the computer.

I bought this item to avoid having to take so many different chargers with me when traveling. Seems to work well with any device that I have tried thus far (Garmin Forerunner, Blackberry, iPod Shuffle).

This is the second time I have been asked to review this transaction for some strange reason.

This vendor supposedly offered a "Scosche" brand set of USB chargers at a steeply discounted price. The chargers pictured in the offer clearly bore the Scosche brand name, and they used the Scosche "retail price" from which to show the steep markdown in price.

When I received these items there were in no kind of packaging -just loose inside of a jiffy bag mailer, so it was difficult to tell if they were even new. Though the items looked similar to the ones pictured in the offer, they were NOT Scosche brand products. They were instead some cheap, no-name, made in China, knockoff, of the type you'll find on Ebay selling for a buck apiece.

When I wrote back, the vendor admitted that the items were not Scosche but rather "OEM", but assured me they have sold "thousands without any problem". They further went on to "guarantee" that I would have "no problem" with the units. Their guarantee however, would be of little consequence should one of these cheap chargers fry my daughters expensive Ipod.

I decided to cut my losses as the whole transaction was just a few bucks. The vendor did refund my money, (I think), and the only reason I am responding to this request for a review again, is to warn other buyers.

Look, bottom line is: Amazon is a great resource that I have used in the past, and will surely use again. And this is the first time I have experienced any kind of problem purchasing through Amazon. But vendors who engage in classic "bait and switch" tactics are not worthy of being represented by Amazon.

Car charger works well and so does the home/travel charger. The pins fold back on the home/travel charger which makes it good to travel with. The cords do not come with these items.

I bought this for my wife's car, which I usually use on the weekends. She has an iPhone, I have a BlackBerry, so I wanted to minimize charger clutter in the car. While it works fine with her iPhone 3Gs, it does NOT work with my BlackBerry 9800. A message pops up on the BlackBerry saying that the connected charger is insufficient to power the device.

So much for the "universal" part, although I have long ago learned not to trust the title descriptions on Amazon.

Oddly enough, the AC outlet charger does work with my BB. But if you are buying this primarily for use in the car, be forewarned: the iPhone, yes; BlackBerry, no.

Energizer EN120 Cup Inverter, 120-watt

Energizer EN120 Cup Inverter, 120-wattThis thing is really cool. It's a sleek car charger that fits into any standard car cup holder. The cord isn't super long, so your cup holder ideally needs to be fairly close to your car's accessory port (or cigarette lighter, as they used to be called.)

Compact

This thing is about the size of an 8oz cup. It's kind of stout, like the beverage cups they usually give on airlines, so it doesn't take up much room or add clutter.

4 Convenient USB Ports Enough to Share

These days, we all have multiple devices that need to be charged. And since USB is becoming the standard, the 4 USB ports on this charger can juice up most anything with a USB cable. And there's enough ports to go around, so whoever's riding shotgun can plug in their devices too!

BONUS -AC Plug Power Inverter too!

This cool little thing even has a 3-prong AC power inverter, so you can plug in virtually anything with a standard AC cord and use it in your car -laptop, tablet, emergency light, beverage cooler, hotplate (LOL) -virtually anything with a standard wall plug! I have many extra gadgets, so the bonus AC outlet has proven to be very handy and convenient.

Bottom Line really love this cup holder car charger. Offers a lot of bang for the buck and all packed into a very compact and well made gadget. Love it! Happy! ;oD

Streamlight 77175 Battery Stick for SL-20XP-LED UltraStinger Flashlight

Streamlight 77175 Battery Stick for SL-20XP-LED UltraStinger Flashlight
  • Nickel Cadmium Battery that has 5 cells
  • Replacement rechargeable battery for the Streamlight Ultra Stinger, Super Stinger and the SL-20XP LED flashlights
  • Dimensions: Length - 8 9/16"/Diameter - 7/8"

This product worked exactly as it should, and was virtually identical to the original inside the flashlight. It is a genuine Streamlight product. However, I think this is an older model, because it says "for SuperStinger", and the newer one says "for UltraStinger". If you don't know, the SuperStinger is an older model than the Ultra, but the only difference was the new reflector; same power consumption and battery life, so batterys are identical. Works like a charm.

When I purchased this, I also purchased a new light. The one I replaced the battery with, is as clear and bright as the new light. Streamlight got it right with this very bright rechargable, if you don't mind the large light. I am now hopeing for a comparable short light.

Finally, I have the right 5-cell battery stick.

I bought anther 3-cell battery stick, by mistake, that has the same part number..., so watch out.

The regular Stinger flashlight takes the 3-cell stick(5" long) and the UltraStinger, mine,

needs a 5-cell batter stick (just over 8" long).

So far so good, we'll see if it holds up to the original battery that lasted almost 8 years of moderate use.

Not to be fooled this is for an SL-20XP. Not an OEM battery but the real deal from Streamlight. Required minimum charge after removing from packing/display tube. Last battery lasted 13-14 years so hope this does too.

I ordered this product about 2 months ago, and finally decided to review it. To sum it up, it sucked. After about 3 or 4 days it broke in such a way that you had to hold the button on it for it to charge otherwise it would go off. The reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 is because in the brief amount of time when it worked, it worked well. I don't know if I just got a bad one or if this occurrence is part of the product, but I do not suggest getting this one. Save your money, find one that has no history of malfunction or one that has received great reviews (if possible, both).

Just installed the Charge Controller Regular from the "Sain Store" (along with the SainSonic MT-1 remote LCD meter from "Amazon Warehouse Deals, Inc.").

So-far-so-good! Everything works as described, and was very easy to install. The price was OK @ $52.59 for the Charge Controller, but not the cheapest on the market for a like product, and the MT-1 Meter ("like-new-used") price was GREAT @ $12.55. "FREE SUPERSAVER SHIPPING" from Amazon.com with $25.00+ purchase was a real nice touch.

Some products such as this one (sold online) are similar with no lableing to indentify the maker or where it was manufactured (USA, China, or outer space)!! That's my main concern here. Beside the Sain Store backing of there item, I have no product maker to rely on for trouble shooting issues or whatever, hopefully none will arise.

Someone should look into labling these products better. Also, no product warranty info, which is somewhat disturbing!!!

That being said, I would appreciate some sort of feedback on these issues, thanks a lot.

Another somewhat happy Sain Store & Amazon.Com Customer, ***Art E.***

this is the worst product that i have ever bought in my entire life. It is awful. It does not work and the transmission is something below horrible. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! nOT WORTH A QUARTER.

Want iTrip Style LCD FM Transmitter and Car Charger with Remote for Apple iPod /Iphone/Itouch/Nano Discount?

I just purchase this device from Amazon, though I love buying from Amazon they really should pull this item from its servers. The sound quality is so bad, things like poor reception from being low powered, mono sounding, no punch in the drums, and the transmitter is completely inferior to other devices on the market. Geffen has been getting away with this crap for far too long with the itrip and now the iphone transmitter. You literally have to keep the transmitter right by your car radio to prevent noise and interference

I would really like to prevent people from buying this device if I could.

Don't waste your money

I never could get this product to work. It came with no instructions. I plugged it in but nothing. Money wasted.

New Combo Rapid Car Charger + Home Wall Charger + USB Data Charge Sync Cable for AT&T Samsung Galaxy

New Combo Rapid Car Charger + Home Wall Charger + USB Data Charge Sync Cable for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S Skyrocket / i727Of course, if you're buying these, then you're probably buying them for the price and the fact that it's a convenient combo. My original Samsung AC adapter and charging cable were fine, I just needed a separate one to keep elsewhere and a charger for my car too.

In that regard, they work well enough as extras. I would have given these products five stars for doing what I need them for, but my rating went lower because of the AC charger. To start, it doesn't charge as quickly as an AC charger should. I tested it extensively and it seems to charge at the same rate as plugging your phone into a computer USB port -to get to the gist, it charges slowly. Whereas the original Samsung AC adapter would charge from 5% to almost 100% in two hours or so, this AC charger would take 4-5 hours to do the same (i.e. USB port rate).

Furthermore, and this is what really brought the score down, it appears there is some sort of glitch related to the AC charger. When charging through the AC charger and using the phone at the same time, the responsiveness of my phone (the Galaxy Skyrocket) would go down dramatically. Often, I would be completely unable to enter my lock-screen pattern or I would have to touch the screen several times before my touch registers or simply that my touch would register after a 2-3 second delay. I have to unplug the phone from the charger to make the phone responsive again.

I haven't tested whether this same issue is there on the car/USB charger, but AC charging is my primary method of charging, so this is a big downer. If the above issues I listed are not a problem for you, then these offers a great extras to what you already have. If the above issues do present a problem, I'd suggest buying something of a higher quality to ensure a good experience.

This was a sweet deal and I am so glad I purchased it when I did. I can now charge my phone anywhere at home and in my car at anytime

Schumacher IP-1875C Instant Power with Air Compressor

Schumacher IP-1875C Instant Power with Air Compressor
  • 12 volt DC power source with hi-pressure air compressor

  • Safety features includes jump start power on/off switch and reverse hookup protection with audible alarm
  • Built-in charger for automatic charging of internal battery
  • Easy-to-read battery status LEDs display full power, 75 percent charged or 50 percent or less

I had this jumper battery for a few months and I didn't use it until now that my friend's Saturn Vue V6 engine was not starting. I connected the clamps to his battery and the car started immediately. The battery status on this unit has 3 lights (red-yellow-green) and is very useful to know when to recharge it. It was on yellow status but it still could start several cars with ease. The air compressor and the flash light on the unit are also very useful. A very handy equipment for the price (when I bought it, it was $80)

I would recommend it.

Buy Schumacher IP-1875C Instant Power with Air Compressor Now

This combination air compressor/12vdc battery back-up has been in my possession for about one month and has not only successfully pumped up two half-flat auto tires, but seems to have accepted a fairly deep charge via a 120vac extension cord after each use. (I haven't tried recharging the internal battery from an auto battery yet.) Since this doesn't represent a very long-term or comprehensive review, I can only add that the air compressor seems robust if slow; a 10psi increase in tire pressure requiring about 2 minutes. The indicator lights, utility light, and psi guage all seem well-made, and the latter shows the actual pressure while operating, unlike cheaper gauges that only stabilize after shutting off the compressor. My only other concern/comment is that the battery cable clamps are always exposed, one on each side of the unit, and it would be possible to complete the circuit inadvertently if the unit fell into a puddle or was stored haphazardly around wire, since the cable/battery disconnect switch doesn't seem to work and the cables are, therefore, always "live". I'm not sure if this is a serious health hazard, but it certainly increases the chance for a destructive short-circuit and I'd recommend checking the function of your disconnect switch before leaving the unit exposed around children.

I choose the Schumacher compressor package for it's price and features. I've been really surprised how much I have used it. It so handy that it allows me to better keep up with the tire pressure on my cars and I have used the jump start feature to get my neighbors car going and a car that was on a bridge where we couldn't turn around to use regular jumper cables. The compressor is a bit slow but it doesn't give up, even on SUV tires. One thing to note, the on board pressure gauge is not accurate at all (almost gave 4 stars for that but it has been to handy not to give it 5 stars).

Want Schumacher IP-1875C Instant Power with Air Compressor Discount?

Very reliable and convenient charger. We kept this baby in the back of our SUV for months. About a month ago, we finally had a reason to put it to good use when the truck battery went dead. The unit was all set and fully charged when we first took it out of the box and was still fully charged when we needed it. We hooked the cables up to the battery, went to start up the truck and it instantly started up. We have also used the air compressor for our tires many times and it works well. It takes about 2-3 minutes to pump a tire up from 24-36psi. Not too bad for a compact charger. Very happy with this purchase.

Worked one time. Second time I went to use it, the built in light had accidentally come on and drained the battery. I will accept responsibility for that (even though it was stowed in the trunk). When I went to charge it today, both the expose 110/120V charging "prongs" broke and got pushed into the unit. (To charge this device, you essentially plug an extension cord into it, then plug it into a wall outlet.) Now there is no way to charge the device. So, to void the warranty (!) I opened it up to find this piece of crap Chinese transformer unit. I'm surprised I was able to even charge it the first time. Very poor design. Avoid.

It would be great if they would include an attached chord keeper or cable tie, as I don't need the entire 25' length most of the time. I can see no difference in effectiveness of the charger whether this extension is inserted between the charger and the leads to the battery, or not.

I use this extension to allow me to mount the Battery Maintainer on a shelf in my garage that is near a power outlet. The extension allows me to drape it in the rafters of the garage and then the connections from the battery can come down from above. Before buying this extension I had to set the battery maintainer on the radiator of my truck with its hood up and run an extension cord over for the battery maintainer to plug into. With this extension cord I can unplug the battery maintainer, disconnect the battary maintainer connections from my truck battery and drape them over to the side, shut the hood and drive away. Before it was a hastle to disconnect the battery maintainer and move it over to the side of the garage before being able to drive off. The extension is worth the money to me for that convienence.

works fine for my Tomtom. However, the actual part that plugs into the cigarette lighter could be more tight. It is a little wiggly and the GPS shifts in sharp turns. Also, would be nice if the arm that holds the GPS would be longer or extendable. Unfortunately it is so short, that it interferes with the shift stick. When putting the car from D to P I need to move the GPS a bit because its in the way. Other than that I prefer it to the suction cup holder on the window.

Solartech SPM010P-D 10-Watt 12-Volt ES Polycrystalline PV Solar Panel

Solartech SPM010P-D 10-Watt 12-Volt ES Polycrystalline PV Solar PanelI bought 3 of these to power 3 12v DC fans. This is my first experiment in using electric solar power. If I were to rebuy the collectors I would buy slightly larger ones for more power output. That is not a product issue. It is a my inexperience issue. The collectors do put out the power advertised. I could just use a bit more for more RPMs. My one manufacturer complaint is that they did not provide info about weatherability of the collectors and worse did not reply to my email requesting that information. I believe that I could increase power output by relocation but the panels would then be weather exposed.

I've only used ours a little (ok -~30 minutes) but in direct sun in July (Los Angeles), I was getting a bit over 21V from it.. This was good enough to hook up with patch cables to my truck's battery which was low due to a failed voltage regulator. Anyway, in about 30 minutes it brought the battery voltage from 12v up to 12.6v. The panel is constructed solidly and looks like it will last a good long time! I highly suggest using a charge controller with a panel like this such as the Morningstar Sun Keeper which is more than enough for this panel -using a charge controller will ensure that you do not overcharge your battery and will take care to reduce any charge effects by using PWM (3-stage) charge control. I'll be using ours to power a door motor on a chicken coop to let the birds out in the morning and lock them in, in the evening. This panel will work just fine for this purpose!

Optima 8004-003-FFP RedTop Group 34/78 Starting Battery

Optima Batteries 8004-003 34/78 RedTop Starting Battery

  • Reserve capacity of 100 minutes for constant performance
  • Optimal starting power even in bad weather
  • Fifteen times more resistant to vibration for durability
  • Ships in Certified Frustration-Free Packaging

I'll try to get this right, but some of the background info regarding Optima history may be off by a year or two.

First: 4 star rather than a 5 star rating. The warranty would need to match the longer warranties offered by others, and quality control tightened to earn five stars. Performance is normally excellent, so why not offer a longer warranty?

Gates Tire and Rubber invented/ designed/ developed the Optima and Genesis AGM batteries in the '80's/ early '90's. As I understand things, the Optima was intended for rugged/ abusive applications requiring the highest starting current, while the Genesis was intended for more sedentary uses and maximized charge/ volume by using flat plates. Both minimized venting and maintenance requirements.

The Optima brand was spun off to a Swedish company but the batteries continued to be manufactured in Aurora, CO. Johnson Controls purchased the Optima brand in ~2000 and continues to own the brand. All mfg was moved from Aurora to a suburb of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, around late 2007. Genesis was spun off to Enersys, which used YAUSA to mfg these in China, Mexico and who knows where; I believe their premium Genesis EP series are made in Warrensburg, MO.

Optima Red Top battery design changed sometime in 2007. Apparently the glass mat was often pinched/ crimped leading to premature shorting and failure. Ratings of the 34/78 Red Top was reduced from 55 Ah to 50 Ah, the CCA rating remained at 800, and curiously, the warranty was reduced from 3 yr free replacement + 3 yr prorated, to 3 yr free replacement + 0 yr prorated. This roughly corresponded with moving the production to the Monterrey suburb, although a number of the newer style batteries were still made in Aurora in 2007. From my experience with a number of both batteries, the older Red Top 34/78, 55 Ah batteries were either the very best or very worst depending on the luck of the draw. All seem to lose Voltage faster than the newer design, but they were still much better than conventional flooded lead acid batteries, and generally tested above 10.5 V 2.5 years after mfg. If allowed to run down while on the pallet and then charged, these frequently would experience thermal runaway unless charged at a low rate, and if that problem was not incurred, they would frequently charge up only to fail open after, say 15 seconds at a 400 or 500 A draw. Optima apparently was aware of the problem yet did not tell customers. Optima sold a number of these for military applications, too, but it seems did nothing to correct the problem; nice to know when someone is shooting at you. But those that sat on the pallet for a long time of the older-design and that passed the high current load test seemed to surpass the performance of the newer design. Some batteries that failed early or lost Voltage quickly were found to be missing a vent cap. (Missing caps are rare, but they sometimes aren't there and are not noticed unless the cover is pried off. Optima may not even believe this.) Great quality control for a premium product.

All but about 5 or 50 batteries of the newer design left on the pallet for 4 years tested at 11.0 V or higher, so those claiming leakage should look for a electric system parasitic draw rather than blaming the battery; newer design charged Optimas just don't normally lose Voltage in a couple of months.

Because of their lower internal resistance, Optimas can accept a higher rate of charge and require less energy to fully charge.

Normal operation

Keep the battery at or above 12.5 V as much as possible to minimize sulfation. Spiral wound AGM batteries, while more resistant to sulfation, will sulfate and reversing it is tougher than with flooded lead acid batteries. NEVER allow the battery to fall below 10.5 V; recovery will be tough if below that and irreversible damage may result if left below that Voltage for long. Red Tops are not meant for deep cycling, which means these are intended to be charged soon after starting the engine.

A major cause of warranty claims for AGM batteries, not just Optimas, is early sulfation due to failure to fully charge the battery, which many charging system in late model vehicles fail to due in order to improve fuel economy so ever little. GM vehicles may be more likely to fully charge AGM batteries because their charging systems are reportedly set to a Voltage higher than other vehicle manufacturers; their OEM Delco batteries have larger spacing requiring higher Voltage to fully charge. Many battery chargers also fail to adequately overcharge the battery whereby the battery undergoes the full recombinant reactions restoring full performance. But it is also important not to overcharge the battery such that loss of electrolyte and overheating occur.

Best non-commercial battery charger for Optimas I have used so far: Interacter Inc. (and mfg in the USA), seems to give better end performance than CTEK 7002's. Both gave better results than Vector chargers, which performed okay on Optimas 11.5 V or higher, but the Interacter and CTEK would charge Optimas that had fallen to just a few Volts without having to resort to wiring the Optima battery in parallel with a battery already at 12+ Volts to fool the charger into charging, (Optima's recommended procedure for charging a depleted battery). Also, Interacter seemed to give about the right amount of overcharging. (Many smart chargers see the low Voltage/ low internal resistance as a failed battery and thus refuse to start charging.) Please do not try charging a battery less than 12 V below freezing; warm the battery to above freezing first, and do not forget a discharged battery allowed to freeze will likely suffer irreparable damage. If hot spots develop or venting occurs while charging, stop charging. Resume at a low rate after the battery has cooled. A battery that has been left setting for a long time at a low Voltage should be charged at a very low rate for the majority of charging. This can be followed by a high rate charge, say 50 A, for several minutes while ensuring no over heating or venting, to help restore performance. High-rate charging may open additional surface area that had been heavily sulfated and reduce grid point discharging (?).

All Optimas are not created equal. When performing high current load tests to evaluate the CCA ratings, I have seen 5 of 7 fully charged batteries from the same layer on a pallet fail open within seconds, and 13 of 44 on that pallet fail open, only to see none fail from other pallets of the same lot. Some batteries left uncharged on the pallet for several years perform as well as a factory fresh battery, and batteries left on the pallet for less than a year fail open during testing. Why? Do not expect an answer from Optima.

Charging Yellow Top(deep cycle/ starting) Optima batteries

Surprisingly, the Yellow Top batteries seem to lose Voltage a little more quickly than Red Top, but still both are less than flooded lead acid batteries. Now for charging, it is assumed the Voltage is at or above 10.5 V and that the battery has been in recent use. (Remember, never allow the Voltage to drop below this or expect the worst.) For a 50 Ah Yellow Top, charging can be fast, say 30 to 50 A, until reaching the Zero dV/dt, (Zereo Delta), point, at which reduce charging to 1 to 5 A and continue, charging an additional 3 to 5 Ah after reaching Zero Delta. New batteries may take 30 minutes for this last stage, while older batteries, 2 or 3 hours. This may extend battery life from 200 deep cycles to deep 500 cycles. NOTE: This is a general charging guideline and it is the responsibility of the reader/ user to ensure safe operation at all times. If using this charging technique, first review research articles found by Googling "national renewable energy lab, Optima battery, charging".

I hope this will help those who already have an Optima battery or thinking about purchasing one. Please share your experience if you have some better ideas and techniques.

I bought this battery from a local Optima dealer on January 2008. It died on August 2009.

Since it comes with a three year warranty, I tried to get it serviced under the warranty by calling the Optima 1-800 number. Customer service agent was very rude and kept telling me I'd have to pay a fee in order to get my battery serviced.

Perhaps I just haven't had a new battery in a while and I've forgotten how they all work when new, but this battery seems to throw a LOT more power than I expected to the engine to start it up on even the coldest days so far this year. If this battery can perform at this level for a couple years, it'll have been the best battery I've ever bought. At this point though, expensive compared to the "el cheapo" brands you may find at walmart, but worth it knowing it's got the juice to get it done.

Want Optima 8004-003-FFP RedTop Group 34/78 Starting Battery Discount?

I bought this battery in May 2009. It just suddenly failed Dec 2010. Just over 1 1/2 years. I originally bought the battery for my Mustang because of the early reviews and the 800 amp capacity. Perfect for my car. Now, researching why the battery died so suddenly and quickly I read on another site that it really is a good, powerful battery just you have to disconnect it when you're not driving so the trickle doesn't drain the battery. The stock battery that was with my car when I bought it lasted over 3 years (plugged in the whole time.) I read enough about Optima's poor customer service and not honoring their warranty that I'm not even going to bother trying to get warranty service thru them. I checked with the local Ford dealership, a mechanic friend and a rep at Advanced Auto Parts and they all agreed that it sounded like the battery was the issue ("a short inside the battery.") In fact, after I described what happened to the Advanced Auto Parts rep and he recommended getting a new battery, I told him the problem battery was an Optima and he called across the store to another worker, "Hey, Carl! I got another customer here with your favorite battery!"

I highly recommend that anyone avoid the Optima batteries. They will give you great starting power in your car, but they appear to have a habit of dying suddenly and without warning about 18 months in. Mine was great the last time I drove, then after not driving for 2 days, I got in the car and the battery was totally dead. (And I'd gotten back at night the last time, so I'm sure the lights were off they shine right on my garage door.)

I'd only recommend this battery to someone who just needed a battery to connect to as needed. The rest of the time, it could just sit there. Or if you live in a cold climate and are okay with changing car batteries out every year.

I bought my first Optima battery for my '96 GMC C1500 with a vortec 5700 in 1998. This battery has been through all kinds of weather from New Mexico to 4 years in Germany, a couple years in Seattle, and the last 4 years in TX. I have drained this battery dead at least 4 times and it recovered/recharged every time except for this last weekend. My truck has been parked for most of the last month since the a/c is out and the temps her in TX have been 100+ for the last 2 months. I finally killed it for good... after 13 "short" years of life. I have replaced the batteries in all 3 of my vehicles with Optima's since then and will be buying another Optima for my truck. I'm sure this battery will outlast the truck this time. I'm SOLD!!!!

Brunton SOLARIS 52 CIGS Foldable Solar Panel (Black/Silver, 12 Volt)

Brunton SOLARIS 52 CIGS Foldable Solar PanelI'm a bit of a technophile, and gadgets like thin film solar panels really raise my eyebrows. Aside from the WOW factor, there is the practical application of the device.

I'm in the Army, and two things are important to me. Portable power and ease of transport. I have owned Brunton Solar products before, namely the Solaris 25,and it did a terrific job providing me power but at the cost of size and limited use for high power consuming devices. The Brunton Solaris 52 was the answer.

Other solar products tell you that they can charge portable devices....but how many of them can actually RUN them. The answer is a resounding zip....zero....nada. The Solaris 52 can power your device, and provide a trickle charge to other applications. It is voltage regulated once devices are connected, so while the panels can produce upwards of 28 volts....it is paired down to 12 volts for your devices.

The Solaris 52 is about the size of a regular textbook. The folding cover has a Velcro closed pocket for the three types of cables provided with the device, and even with those cables in the front pocket the device presents a minimal profile in your pack. The panels are applied to a thin type of waterproof canvas. It's a sturdy material which retains the folding pattern of the panels so set up an tear down are a snap.

I tested this unit late on an overcast day. I live in Kansas, so I am not in one of the peak sun belts, and I tested this unit during one of the coldest months in this region. The panel was completely unfolded, I connected it to my Solo 15, and even with a considerable amount of cloud cover the device kicked out the promised 12 volts of DC. I watched the charged device closely to see how much tinkering I would have to do to get maximum output from the panels....the answer...NONE! I was amazed by just how simple, elegant and effective this device truly turned out to be.

I continued to run tests with my voltmeter and found that on top of the steady 12 volts I was able to use the available second power adaptor port to charge my cellphone at the same time. This additional flow was no where near what was being drawn by my Solo 15, but it was still more than enough to charge my phone very quickly.

What Brunton has produced here is an efficient, lightweight and extremely capable portable power plant that will require no maintenance from the user due to the self-healing qualities of the newly developed CIGS cells. All the device needs is a little cleaning with a cloth every now and then to remove dirt or debris...that's it!

The price is a little halting for most. I Realize that, but rest assured you are paying for quality and the assurance that you will have electricity anywhere you need it as long as the sun is in the sky. That kind of reassurance is truly worth he price. As the CIGS technology becomes more mainstream, which it will, expect prices to drop. Or just be a savvy consumer....I picked my Solaris 52 up here on Amazon for around $680. A steal in my opinion.

Imagine being able to take electricity anywhere you go so long as you have sunlight. This device might seem a bit costly, but you definitely get what you pay for. It will power most laptops, most high-powered electronic devices, and most battery chargers. You can even use it to charge your car or boat's battery. Just plug any 12v device into it or hook up its jumper cables. What you'll need to use it as something similar to a standard household outlet is another device called the Solo 15, which is is a lithium battery pack that comes with an included AC/DC inverter. All together all of this equipment should weigh less than 10 pounds.

To figure out whether this device will be enough to run your laptop with a positive net charge, calculate the wattage of your laptop. My laptop is an old Dell Inspiron 1100, which runs off 20 volts & 4.5 Amps. So, the formula to calculate wattage (Volts x Amps = Watts) tells me that my laptop requires 90 watts. That means that I won't get enough energy out of this to keep my laptop running all day. In order to do that, I'd need two sets of solar panels to connect together. However, since I'm still getting a charge, I can use this to slow the discharging of my laptop battery and extend my overall playtime. However, once powered off, this would be enough to charge it. Newer laptops are more energy efficient, so this may be just enough or more than enough power for you.

You'd be surprised what you can accomplish with this. I've read online about a woman who lives off the grid and powers her fridge with this.

All in all, this is the top-of-the-line when it comes to foldable solar array panels meant for personal travel purposes. A steal at this price.

Buy Brunton SOLARIS 52 CIGS Foldable Solar Panel (Black/Silver, 12 Volt) Now

This foldable Brunton panel certainly produces more power than any other little portable panel. It is truly amazing in that regard -around 3 amps of power in direct sunlight.

Somehow I must have fried the voltage regulator on mine, because it puts out 26volts even when connected to devices and batteries seeking only 12 volts. I ran the current, using the clamps, through a volt-meter, as the power comes out of the panel, before it goes into a Brunton SOLO 15W (12volt lithium-polymer battery).

The meter still reads 26 volts or so, not 12volts. The panel's "regulator" is supposed to drop it to 12volts if that's all the device needs, right?

The manual for the SOLO 15 says it can be directly connected to any portable Solaris panel ... but 12volt batteries, including the SOLO 15, simply cannot handle a 26 volt charging current. That will ruin the battery, and I've already done that once ...

I did, however, accidentally connect a 12v battery to it with the wrong polarity one occasion, so that may have fried the regulator. But any day now I will be receiving another Solaris 52 -a brand new one. I'll connect it to a Brunton SOLO 15 and see if the voltage coming in and out is "regulated" to 12 volts before I do anything else to the panel.

I'll give an update after that little experiment.

It would be really nice if it does automatically regulate down to 12v, without needing an external 24v-to-12v converter, because two of these Solaris 52 panels together could re-charge the best portable 12volt power source for your money -the Duracell 600 (Xantrex 600 under the Duracell label) -in only a few hours (hypothetically will be able to confirm in a few days).

Two of those big batteries will power the most power hungry laptops for 12 hours, and Mac's for twice that long. They hold 28aH of juice. If you've got four of the Duracell 600's to capture and store all the power these Solaris panels can generate in one day... then you should be able to keep any laptop going 24 hours from stored sunlight power only. A Duracell 600 costs only about $.

It is kinda sad that Brunton's SOLO 15 lithium 12v battery is so fragile (and costs $), because they are so light and small ... two of them would provide (hypothetically) almost as much power (24aH) as one Duracell 600s (28aH) ... with one fifth the weight, and half the size.

When I say "fragile" I don't mean it breaks easily from rough handling. They are actually very sturdy in that regard. The fragility relates to how the battery stops working properly after only a few uses, especially when they are drained completely while charging a laptop, or perhaps charged with too much voltage from a malfunctioning Solaris 52 panel ...

Brunton will have a winner if those SOLO 15 batteries can be redesigned with better circuitry to protect them from the common things that will hurt any battery: excessive discharge, and over-the-limit voltage while charging.

As for the Solaris 52 foldable panel itself ... the bottom line:

Even if I fried the built-in voltage regulator through my own error, or those voltage regulators don't always do what they are supposed to, and therefore I must use a small external 24v-to-12v converter, like the one made by Velleman (costs less than $) ... then it's still a very worthwhile product.

There are many things on the plus side. My favorite is how small it reduces to when folded. I also love how fast I can set it up on a vehicle windshield facing the sun. Then all that energy baking my dashboard is transformed into juice for my laptop ... pretty cool.

Let's hope Brunton's partners in China start acting more like the Japanese and refining the quality of these winning designs, rather than merely figuring out how to make more of them, and make them faster and cheaper. Focus on the quality and feature improvement first. Then you'll have some VERY popular must-have products for people who might want to use their laptops in the great outdoors ... like me.

------------------------------------

Update:

The Solaris 52 is powerful indeed ... but it may be TOO powerful for many gadgets. I just received the second Solaris 52 and tested it various ways in direct sunlight. I needed to test a brand new one, right out the box, to make sure I wasn't getting skewed results from the one I THOUGHT I had accidentally damaged ... But the brand new one behaves exactly the same way ... so I did not damage the first one afterall. That's a good thing and a bad thing. It's a bad thing because the Solaris 52 is definitely NOT a "12 Volt solar panel" ... They really should not call it that. That claim is dangerously misleading.

The Solaris 52 goes WAY over 12volts under normal direct sunlight conditions (more than twice that voltage, actually). Most 12volt devices will fry if the input power is above 16vdc! The Solaris 52 package itself says the voltage will vary with the amount of sunlight, but it does not say the output will become regulated down to 12volts if attached to a device only needing 12volts. No, the panel cannot tell the difference, and it will hit a connected device with whatever voltage is being generated -up to 26vdc. It can easily go as high as 26vdc in direct sun.

The only way to bring down the output voltage to around 12 volts, without a converter, is to have two 12volt devices plugged in at the same time (there are two (2) power ports on the Solaris 52). That will split the voltage nicely to about 12 volts per port ... but it cuts the amps in half also.

Sometimes you want to have all the amps powering a single 12volt battery!

That must be what other users are doing -they must be using both power ports simultaneously, to get 12volts with half the amps ... because otherwise there would be a lot of damaged devices out there, and some very irate customers. I would not want to be a customer service person for Brunton, because the manual for this does not sufficiently warn users what can happen.

I will soon be receiving a proper 24vdc to 12vdc converter, and then I'll be returning Brunton's "Solar Controller" because it doesn't do voltage regulation/conversion for currents as high as what the Solaris 52 will put out. The Brunton Solar Controller will be damaged by the Solaris 52 in full sunlight while recharging a big 12volt battery.

The package for the Solar Controller says to ONLY use them with 12volt solar panels ... It is mainly designed to prevent over-charging (with respect to amps) of big 12volt batteries, like the ones in RV's and cabins and boats.

The manual for the Brunton SOLO 15 lithium battery says you can definitely connect a Solaris 26 (not a Solaris 52) solar panel to it ... It doesn't mention Solaris 52 at all.

Bottom line: It's a mighty powerful, portable solar panel, but the "12volt" output is NOT regulated, either as an open current, or when powering devices. To use it safely in full sun you must either be powering two 12volt devices at once ... or you must use a 24vdc to 12vdc converter to keep it from hurting some of your gadgets.

I am really surprised that the manual for the Solaris 52 does not provide adequate guidance in that respect. It wouldn't be so hard to do. One more paragraph would do it guys!

I purchase this Brunton Solaris 52 CIGS to charge the battery on my tent trailer during my trips. I do not camp in campsites where there is a direct power source. I camp mostly out in the open BLM land area. I connect the Solaris to the top of the tent trailer with a connection going directly to the Brunton Charger Unit to control the charge for no overcharge of the battery. With cloud coverage my battery was fully charged by sunset each day. I felt rest assured that I can use more of my battery power at night such as lighting and charging other devices. The best part is I do not need to run a gas generator just for electrical power. Keep it simple, Quite, and Peaceful. this will help you enjoy your camping trips.
