PowerStation PS1118 Jump Starter

PowerStation PS1118 Jump Starter
  • Instant jumpstarts in extreme conditions
  • 12 VDC outlet provides power at any time
  • EHP battery provides 400 cold cranking amperes
  • Extra long 4 gauge leads
  • Integrated long-lasting LED work lamp

I purchased the PS1100 (no longer made, the PS1118 is similar) a couple years ago and it worked great in all applications until.....I recently tried to use it for starting my 2003 Tundra (V8). I got the loud clicking noise from the solenoid indicating it wasn't getting the needed power to fully engage. Looked up the specs on the truck battery and the PS1100 and found the pS1100 provides "about 400-450 CCA" and the truck battery spec calls for 750 CCA. Bottom line? These portable starters are great unless you have a vehicle that requires higher CCA. If you're not sure, take the time to check what your vehicle requires. If it's over 450 CCA, this unit will probably not start your vehicle, especially if your battery has been severely discharged.

This unit provided the best combinations of features I considered desirable (cold cranking amps) and features I was not interested in (compressor) for the money. An added plus is the ability to recharge directly with just a power cord. Not needing a wall wart is a convenience.

VX 50 - Light Duty Compact Step Up / Step Down Worldwide Travel Voltage Converter - Max 50 Watts. Ideal for iPod, Phone and Camera Chargers
  • 50 Watt Maximum Step UP/Down Voltage Converter
  • Converts 220/240 V to 110/120 V - OR - 110/120 V to 220/240 V
  • Euro to Us and US to Euro adapter plugs included
  • Fuse protected. Do not exceed over 30 watts
  • NOT TO BE USED FOR CURLING IRONS, STRAIGHTNERS, HAIR DRYERS AND KITCHEN APPLIANCES.

I travel to Europe at least once a year. Last year in Spain I took four of them and only one failed me. The fuse blew out. My only complain is that due to new security regulations in Spain the electical sockets are not flat anymore, so I had to buy an attatchment so I could plug it into the wall.

It was around five dollars a unit when I bought them, and if it goes back down to that I'll buy more. Not worth ten bucks.

I like the design of this product very much, but it suffers from a fatal flaw. The transmitter is weak. This is in direct conflict with what other reviews say. Also, the unit only broadcasts from 88.1-107.9 -other websites and the back of the packaging claim its capable of 87.6 to 107.9.

From this, I think I know why the transmitter is so weak. Apparently, this unit originally did not comply with FCC regulations and probably was a very strong transmitter that could do the full FM frequency. At some point, apparently very recently, the FCC probably forced Satechi to remedy this and now it can no longer do 87.6-88.0 and no longer broadcast a signal powerful enough to be received from more than 6 yards out as the FCC requires.

If you look at reviews on Amazon, you'll notice the FM transmitters made by companies you've never heard of all get the high 5 star reviews while the ones made by big name brands (like Monster and Belkin) get absolutely trashed in the reviews. This is because ANY FM transmitter that actually complies with FCC regulations is garbage in a large city with heavy airwave saturation. The cheap chinese ones rarely comply with these regulations cause they constantly change brand names, anyways. The bigger players usually do play the by the rules and their products suffer as a result.

In this case, I suspect Satechi has recently been forced to start playing by the rules based on the transmitter I received. The weak signal and newly restricted (at least it appears to be a new change) frequency range are dead giveaways of this.

Sadly, that makes the unit hard to recommend. It's not Satechi's fault, but this transmitter just sucks in terms of signal strength (which means static *all* the time and an inability to broadcast "over" another signal if you can't find an empty frequency). Great design, but unless you live out in the middle of nowhere you probably won't be able to hear your music without static.

I love my Satechi FM tuner with presets!! I had an older tuner that I hated because of the cord, limited and unchangeable FM stations, and incompatibility with the new iPhone and iPod Touch. I was ready to "iPod" my car for $300 because I had such a bad experience with my tuner but I decided to buy the Satechi gadget as a last ditch effort to save money.

I live in LA and have an iPhone 3G and first generation iPod Touch the Satechi works on both without any errors (and charges them both, too!!). Save yourself some trouble and do a search for the best "free" fm channel in your area. Then, make sure the tuner is flush against your phone or iPod. If its not flush, it'll pop out very easily (so yes, that means taking off the case for many of you). Once you are synced to the right channel, the sound is great! The only time I get static is if I go into a garage or if I'm travelling outside my station's zone (then I just switch channels).

To top it off, I just took a road trip from LA to SF. This tuner made my trip so much more enjoyable! I was able to hold a couple stations for hours and it only started getting static-y around Tracy but I think its just because the signals aren't strong here (happened with my last tuner but it sounded much much worse).

PS... be realistic... this is an FM tuner so you WILL get some static once in a while and the sound will NOT be CD-crystal-clear quality. But for the price, this gadget is amazing. Wireless, small, and just what I need to listen to podcasts in my car! Thanks, Satechi!!

I am really impressed with this unit. It is so small and does a great job as FM transmitters go. The customer service was excellent. I honestly can't even believe how good it was. I bought a Satechi FM transmitter with a suction cup through Amazon and there was a problem with the adapter not fully snapping into the unit. I was too lazy to try to return it and since it worked pretty well anyway, I didn't bother making a complaint. After about a month and a half, I figured I would try a little more pressure to press the adapter into the unit. Bad idea! I broke it. I could still charge my iphone 3g, but I could only get FM if the iphone was upside down! I figured I would call Satechi just to see if I might be able to make a case for a replacement even though I was past the warranty period. I didn't need to make a case. Someone answered the phone immediately and I was offered to have a new suction cup mount sent or to try the new tiny FM transmitter I am reviewing now. No questions. No charges to my card. Nothing. And, I didn't even have to send back the suction cup transmitter first, which was great because I kind of got used to being able to charge my iphone in the car. The only issue is that the suction cup mount cost more and I am only getting store credit for the difference. I don't see myself needing anything else that this company makes.

Great product and easy to use, although when using with Pandora on iPhone 3G, I often get the digital phone interference which can be quite loud over the stereo speakers. You can probably eliminate this by putting phone in Airplane mode, but then you can't use Pandora or receive calls or e-mails. Not sure how Satechi could prevent this, but it has been annoying enough for my wife to ask me to just turn it off or use iPod instead.

I received this unit yesterday and it is being used with an iPhone 3GS in a 2001 Mercedes CLK 320 convertible, with no AUX input, hence the need for the FM transmitter. The unit worked well right out of the package. Despite what some other reviewers have written, the unit (and my car radio) could both be tuned to 87.9 MHz, and that's where I've been using it. It is important for all users to realize that the sound quality is going to be somewhat degraded because digital audio quality is lost since the music is getting to the radio via the FM transmitter, so the frequency range is standard FM quality (20-20KHz). Music sounds like it's coming from a radio station, and not a CD player. So it's good, but not crisp and sharp like from a CD or MP3 player.

I have not played with all of the functions of the remote, and the range seems to be only a few inches. I will replace the battery in the remote to see if that helps; I haven't drilled into the user manual, but will do that over the weekend.

One negative, and this seems to come either from default settings or from the fact that I am not doing something right, but once you plug your iPhone into the dock, it automatically starts playing the first song in your stored songs listed in alphabetical order. So, I've been hearing a lot more of Elvis Costello ("Accidents Will Happen") than I'd like, as I have to fumble to get my songs where I want them to start. There is a bit of fumbling with the phone once it's plugged in to get to the track wanted, as it seems harder to get to album or song settings, but these are minor nits, and again, I haven't mastered this to the fullest.

Final verdict: this is the second FM transmitter device that I've purchased (the first, a Belkin unit, was crap and went back the next day) and I am quite happy with it. There are many FM stations on air here in the Bay Area, and it seems to hold its own set at 87.9. Additionally, there seems to be a filter in place that limits the hiss of the radio at this frequency, which makes the music a bit more clear. I am happy with it, and feel that $50 for the unit with remote plus shipping is a very fair value for the money.

Goal Zero 11401 Guide 10 with 4 Goal Zero AA Batteries

  • Built in LED flashlight runs 20 plus hours per charge
  • Versatile applications - you can take batteries out for use
  • Charges from Nomad 7 solar panel or USB
  • Recharge your cell phone 1-3 times per charge; Very small, about the size of a cell phone
  • Adapter not included

There was a bad run of the power packs that would heat up and melt. GoalZero has corrected the problem months ago and sent out new power packs that are labeled "GUIDE 10 PLUS" in the indention below where it says GoalZero. The old defective power packs just say "GoalZero" with nothing in the endintion. The word !PULS! tells you that you have the re engineered power pack. Amazon's stock of GoalZero products are the old defective power pack that will heat up and melt. I ordered one on January 20, 2012 and got the bad power pack. After talking with customer service, it is evident that the old stock will be shipped until it is exhausted. They were very helpful in refunding my money without requiring the product be returned. Make your purchase from Amazon THROUGH one of the other sellers listed on the right. I contacted Blue Kangaroos and they are aware of the problem and HAVE the new power pack ready for shipment.

I'm not one to type reviews; but I felt I must inform many here at Amazon after using reviews to help me with my purchases. I bought the Goal Zero Guide 10 with the hope the unit will charge my iTouch 3rd generation. I also purchased the Nomad 7 Solar Panel in a separate purchase. The two units work together or separately. They both charge small electronic items such as my cellular phone.

My concern comes from not being able to charge my iTouch 3rd generation. YOU MUST MAKE SURE you have the 1 amp unit which is the Guide 10 plus. The Guide 10 is only 1/2 an amp which will slowly charge your iTouch; however, you will receive the message from the iTouch saying it is not the proper charging unit. I was told by customer service of the situation and it will not harm the iTouch.

I"m not really thrilled about this and feel the company misrepresented what the Goal 10 can do. Many consumers are not electrical savvy. They do not understand if 2 amps or 25 amps will do what it needs. IF we want to make sustainable energy welcomed by many others, we need to better inform them of solar energy and what people need in order for it to do what they need it to do.

Hopefully, this will help inform those consumers who would like the unit to do what it says. I must admit I'm not thrilled; however, I do hope this will help people understand.

The Guide 10 was advertised as able to charge an iPod. It didn't charge my Touch, even after trying a few suggestions by Goal Zero support. It does work well with the Nomad 7 solar panel to charge AA batteries, and works to charge my cell phone. But I really wanted it mainly to charge the iPod.

Edited to say that after MUCH back and forth, they finally replaced it with one which worked. So I gave it 4 stars instead of 3.

I actually have the Goal0 19007 Guide 10 Adventure Kit and purchased an extra Guide 10 power pack. The idea is that I can have one fully charged at all times while the other one is charging. It charges my Blackberry in no time and still has enough juice to charge my friends iPhone 4. I've also used it to charge my Bluetooth device. It has a built in LED light is a good flashlight to use in a pinch. The LED light is rated to run 20+ hrs on a full charge. I also use the it with the Goal0 14101 Luna Light which plugs into the packs USB port. Charging it with the solar panels in full direct sun takes approximately 1.5-2.0 hrs. In a computer USB port, it takes close to 6 hrs. This is a very handy device that I never leave home without it or hike without it.

Thor Rechargeable Spotlight

Cyclops CYC-S6X Thor X Scout 6.5 Million Candle Power Rechargeable Halogen Spotlight This is a very powerful light. In fact, the video I have uploaded really does not do the spotlight justice to just how bright this thing is! You may wonder why you would have a need for such a bright light, but it really can come in handy. I have it in case our dog gets lost at night, or if we think there is a potential threat (aka potential intruder) in our yard. However, the light is also a great choice for camping or possibly marine applications.

Pros-

Very direct beam the light is narrow and penetrating

Charges fully within 8 hours

Has a car adapter

Not too heavy

Affordable

Areas for improvement

Other spotlights have two settings Ultra-bright and one that is less intense that is handy for saving the battery.

Need to keep an eye on how long it charges charging for over 24 hours can ruin the battery.

Like all powerful Halogen lights it generates heat. Be careful leaving the light on an unattended.

Final Verdict Great lightI am very happy with its performance.

5 stars

This halogen spotlight is just what the doctor ordered, and at a great price. My older spotlight died after 8 years, and I did the research on Amazon to find this one; super power, great price.

And let me tell you; it does not disappoint.....with 6.5 M candlepower, it lights up my woods and stream (in the dead of night) like it was daytime!!!

The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't have an led to let you know when the thing is fully recharged....you just have to wing it yourself. Which is not all that terrible....I plug it in to recharge about 10pm and then disconnect it at 6am the next day. So far this has worked just fine.

Buy Thor Rechargeable Spotlight Now

This is a reasonably bright spotlight with a nice, focused beam that concentrates the light well at great distances. We bought it a year ago, and it worked fine from last fall through this spring. We rarely use it during the summer months as the long hours of daylight up here in Michigan's UP make it unnecessary. However, it was used once in a while and was regularly recharged.

Started using it daily again over the last two weeks and it just died. Bulb is fine, contacts all fine. Apparently, the battery is kaput. It should last longer than a year.

Although this is a bright light, it has several drawbacks:

* You must remember not to leave it on the charger longer than specified (or risk ruining the battery -a really dumb design).

* There is no charging indicator light -another dumb design (or lack of design).

* It's damn big and heavy.

I think I'm going to give up on rechargeable high-power spotlights. We've owned a half dozen of them, all different manufacturers, and none have lasted. I think I'd rather use one that requires regular battery changes. I've got a six-cell MagLite that's not as bright but, when I pick it up, I KNOW it's going to work.

I bought the Cyclops CYC-S6X to replace a similar unit whose battery had worn out. It works great and is even brighter than the old one. It is so bright that I can identify animals in the tops of trees almost a 1/4 mile away. The batter life is pretty good and the positioners are designed and work well.

Want Thor Rechargeable Spotlight Discount?

Long ago I purchased a similar spotlight rated at 500,000 (1/2 million) candlepower. This one is rated at 2.5 million candlepower by the manufacturer, but is nowhere near as bright as the old unit. I guess the definition of a candlepower has changed (grin).

This unit has an on/off switch. I also preferred the old unit's trigger switch, which allowed easy momentary use. The trigger could also be locked for continuous use. With this one, momentary use is really not possible.

The unit I received does not look like the picture. The one I received has one moveable support on the bottom, which can be placed in four positions to allow various upwards angles when the light is placed on the ground. It also has a "pistol" grip which swings up from the carry handle. This is supposed to allow you to use "pinpoint aiming" when holding the unit upside-down with the grip. Big deal. Leave out the grip and add more candlepower, please.

I did not give it only one star because it does work.

Is there product that does what this promises i.e., jump start a dead car battery without 1)another car and 2)going under the hood?

Please let me know as I've wasted too much time, money and safety on products that don't work (including this one).

Want Wagan EA2045 SelfCharge Auto Jumper In-Car Jumpstarter Discount?

To start a car, you need high current that a car battery provides, either from your own or a donor car's.

This device can't provide enough current to start your car. What it can do is to slowly charge your car battery and let it store enough power to give high current for a second.

Apparently, if your car battery can't hold the charge, it wouldn't work; if it's very weak, it takes longer to charge. And if you try to turn on the engine before the car battery is ready, you've just wasted all the juice from the jumper to the car battery, and may well blow any chance for this thing to work.

There's nothing on the market that you can plug into the cigarette light socket and start the car instantly. Even if the jumper has another car battery in it, the socket can NOT carry that much current.

For the convenience, size and independence of a good Samaritan, this is as good as it can get.

American Hunter Economy Solar Charger

American Hunter Economy Solar Charger, 6-voltI ordered this item to use on my boat as a trickle charger for the 12v Battery. The item in the photo is in a plastic case and the photo appears to be the charger I have seen on other boats. That is why I placed the order. Unfortunately, I was shipped a different model in a metal casing -which does not appear to be as weather proof. Rain and Saltwater appear to able to puddle and leak through seams in the corner. I doubt if the metal casing will be as corrosion resistant, durable, or as eco-friendly as the plastic unit pictured.

There were no instructions or specs provided for the unit. It is not clear how the mounting bracket should be installed. This unit may be fine indoors, in a car, or a dry environment.,but I doubt it will be found very durable in weather.

On the plus side, the unit appears to have more cell and may generate more amps than the unit photoed. Also, shipping was very, very, fast. Probably faster than anything I have ever ordered. In less than 4 days and it was at my front door.

BaoFeng UV-5R 136-174/400-480 MHz Dual-Band DTMF CTCSS DCS FM Ham Two Way Radio

BaoFeng UV-5R 136-174/400-480 MHz Dual-Band DTMF CTCSS DCS FM Ham Two Way Radio
  • 25KHz/12.5KHz Switchable
  • Channel Step: 2.5/5/6.25/10/12.5/25KHz
  • Frequency Range: 136-174 / 400-480MHz
  • 128 Channels 50 CTCSS and 104 CDCSS
  • Dual-Band Display, Dual Freq. Display, Dual-Standby

You would be hard pressed to get a better dual band HT for $62. This radio has international settings, meaning that the entire frequency range from 130-174mhz and from 400-480mhz is open to both TX and RX. This means you do need to be careful as a Ham license only allows you to TX on 2m from 144-148mhz and on 440 from 420-450mhz. The radio is not FCC certified to transmit on any of the Marine VHF, MURS, FRS/GMRS, or business radio or emergency services radio frequencies that lie in these frequency ranges and operating in those frequency ranges with this HT will expose you to FCC action.

You definitely will need the programming cable as the included directions are not enlightening for programming the radio with the keypad. The programming software for the radio is a minimal spreadsheet program. There are better free aftermarket alternatives (there is an active Yahoo group devoted to this radio, there are plenty of Youtube videos, and there is an aftermarket programming package called CHIRP which is a better software program). Make sure that you firmly attach the cable as failure to attach the cable properly will lead to frustration.

The stock antenna is ok if you live under a repeater. For those not living under a repeater an aftermarket antenna is a good upgrade.

For operational purposes the radio transmits and receives quite well and will operate for quite some time on the rechargeable battery that is included with the radio.

For $62 you also have a radio that if it should fall into a lake, get lost or some other calamity strike you can replace it.

Buy BaoFeng UV-5R 136-174/400-480 MHz Dual-Band DTMF CTCSS DCS FM Ham Two Way Radio Now

The Baofeng UV-5R is not an APX7000, so if you're expecting that, you're not going to be impressed. If you want a good, reliable inexpensive dual band HT that is in fact a COMMERCIAL (it IS FCC part 90 certified) Radio, this is for you. Out of the box, it comes complete with a good 1800mah lithium ion battery, belt clip, hand strap and drop in charger. If you're familiar with commercial radios, you'll feel at home programming the UV-5R with the free software, but you'll need to purchase a USB cable if you don't already have one (this radio uses the same 2-pin Kenwood LMR style cable that Wouxun, TYT and many others use). The cables are less than $20.

You get 128 channels with any combination of VHF or UHF channels. Another plus is the radio ACTUALLY SUPPORTS NARROWBAND, INCLUDING SPLINTER CHANNELS. This is a HUGE plus if you want to use the radio to listen (or transmit, if you're authorized) to public safety after 2013 when the FCC mandates narrowband on VHF and UHF. Many agencies are also going to channel steps most ham radios cannot properly tune (e.g. 154.8225). The UV-5R uses DSP, so it has great audio on both transmit and receive. Reports I got about my transmit audio were great, and I noticed if I spoke loudly, the DSP did a good job of attenuating the voice to a tame level.

The display is fairly easy to read, and for it's size the keys are easy to press. What I really like is the large volume knob with integrated power switch, no accidental turn off of buttons! The PTT key is easy to actuate and you don't get fatigue for long conversations. Speaker is loud, though I don't think it has the 1 watt of audio the specifications state. It is loud enough to hear in a crowd or driving down the road with the window open. Construction of this HT is solid, does not feel like a $50 radio, more like a $150 radio.

The only downsides are the poorly written manual, but hey, this is a $50 radio not a $500 radio. If you've used LMR type radios, you'll be able to get around in the software, the menu system also lets you control many of the radios' features. It does have an FM radio, which actually has great sensitivity, and the flashlight feature is easy to actuate using the lower side button and actually comes in handy.

All in all, this is a great ham HT that has the unique ability to LEGALLY operate on part 90 (commercial) frequencies (for those duly authorized), has great performance, and a long battery life. For the price, you cannot go wrong with it. I would buy another and probably will.

You get what you pay for. Not for a newbie when programming since the instructions are half a step above useless, and definitely translated. Some of the voice prompts are still in Chinese (low battery). You can get help from some internet user groups specifically for this radio. Programming the repeater offset in memory mode is not what I expected, and not in the instructions... you program the channel twice, once for receive, another for send. You really need to program the channels from a computer. I spent the extra money to get a USB programming cable to match, and downloaded the programming software from one of the user groups. From what I read it was worth getting the genuine cable. Some others commented they bought cheaper versions that turned out not to be compatible with the USB drivers.

I do like the voice prompts... you can use it in the dark, or one-handed without looking at it.

I wanted an inexpensive backup, and that is what it is. Seems to be sturdy, and does the trick, but my 25 year-old Kenwood still outperforms it on 2M.

So far, I am still glad I bought it for a backup.

Excellent handheld!

I disagree with others on the complexity of programing, I would characterize it as different.

If you know what repeater offset is, then you'll have little difficulty programing this unit.

If you don't, then just use it in simplex mode, the way it came out of the box.

Other makes are more automated, however if you know what settings you want the features are clear and present.

All of this at the price point of the competitors battery.

Five stars is not enough!

I'm no expert on HAM HT radios, but for the price, this is a fantastic little radio. I have another common Chinese brand and I think this one beats it hands down. It is smaller\lighter and looks better. Sound is clearer\louder. Reception is stronger. And it has better features. I would highly recommend it. But, purchase a programming cable and download the PC software. That is a much easier way to program the radio.

Seems the fan kicks on even for low power draw. Maybe it pulls the full current and converts it to heat, thus needing the fan? No idea why, but the cycling fan is annoying.

This product had been sitting in my car for years and when my car battery died today on the hottest day of July, it completely helped bring enough life to the battery so I could start up the car and drive to the mechanic. Great value and solid product.

I bought three of these units, one for each car. I used the first one more than a year later and it worked! I was up and running in about 5 or 10 minutes, as the unit had said. I used the second one several months later after leaving the lights on in the car it worked then too! The 3rd one was used when I helped another guy whose battery was dead. I had no need to contact the company so I can't comment on other reviewers talking about disconnected phone numbers, but from my own personal experience, they are very handy to have in a pinch. And yes, they are a 1-time use disposable unit.

I was excited to try this out, so I ordered 2 of them.

Item arrived quickly. However, it should be noted that the small charger says that it is for 1 use only. So, I am going to wait until it is absolutely necessary before trying it out. I thought that it could be used more than once (then charge it up), so next time I will read the documentation more carefully.

[For some reason, the Amazon order search can't find order #104-7577799-6062631, so I can't leave seller feedback.]

I bought two of these last year and put one in my car and another in my wife's car for emergency purposes. Both did not work. One might be unlucky but two shows that the product is of poor quality.

Schumacher SE-70MA Fully Automatic Deep-Cycle Charger

Schumacher SE-70MA Fully Automatic Deep-Cycle Charger
  • Has reverse polarity protection
  • Prevents overcharging of batteries
  • Accommodates both 12 and 24-volts for deep-cycle batteries
  • Includes manual override switch
  • Charges both deep-cycle and automotive batteries

First of all, a high quality 24V air-cooled charger like this is approx $132+ without S&H. I have Schumacher Chargers and they all operate very well for the price. The weak point on these chargers is "whimpie" wiring that is usually the cause of problems or alleged failures of the unit. If you are not "technically inclined" and have problems, ask a friend or acquaintance who can check the unit. The most common flaw, in my experience, is the connection near the alligator clips, since this area gets the most movement. A continuity check of the wiring can usually locate the fault. Also, since this unit does not have an on/off switch, I simply plug it into a power strip equipped with an on/off switch. A simple fix can save unnecessary replacement of a good unit. In my experience, Schumacher provides a cost effective product considering the price and the service.

It works as advertised. Would be more convenient to use if it had an ON-OFF switch. As it is, On and Off are accomplished by plugging it in and unplugging it.

I have only used this charger a couple of times but so far, so good. I like the fact that you can set it on automatic and forget about it. I would have given it 5 stars if there was an off switch. Would be nicer than having to unplug it, which in time will probably damage the cord. Also, after I purchased it, a mechanical engineer told me that my batteries would last longer and would both get an equal charge by charging them on the 12 volt mode sepeately rather than connecting the charger in series to both batteries and charging them on the 24 volt setting. If that is true, I didn't need a 24 volt charger because I couldn't find a 24 volt baffery, only 2 12 volt batteries connected in series. I still like the unit, thus far.

Power Bright VC200W Voltage Transformer 200 Watt Step Up/Down 110 Volt - 220 Volt

Power Bright VC200W Voltage Transformer 200 Watt Step Up/Down 110 Volt - 220 VoltI bought this transformer about a year ago for my German sewing machine (230 V, 85 W, 50 Hz) to run it in the US (110 V, 60 Hz). So far it works like a charm. I've used it for quite a few sewing projects over the past year and was worried whether the 60 Hz/50 Hz difference would be an issue, but everything seems to be running just fine. Investing twenty bucks in a transformer allowed me to keep using my familiar sewing machine instead of buying and learning how to use a new one, so it was well worth it.

Addendum April 2011: After three years of use now, it still works fine and I haven't had to replace any fuses yet. But you have to be aware of the wattage on the appliances you are plugging into it. I just saw some of the reviews with lower ratings on this item saying it doesn't work, starts smoking, fuses blow immediately etc. Please be aware that this transformer is limited to 200 Watts only, and you probably don't want to max that out either to stay on the safe side. Find out how many Watts you are plugging into it before you turn it on and keep in mind 200 is fairly low. If you have larger wattage items you will need to invest your money into a transformer that can handle that.

You can probably safely run the following items using this transformer: clock radio, electric blanket, laptop, a small TV, radio, VCR/DVD, Xbox, PS2, Wii. You may hit the limit and ask for trouble with desktop computers, Hi-Fi equipment, Xbox 360, PS3, LCD or plasma TVs you may want to get a 500W transformer for those. You will almost certainly blow the fuses if you try to run: any sort of kitchen appliance, power tools, vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, iron. You need something much more heavy duty for those items.

I bought a couple of these on moving from London to NYC, and they work fine. My one complaint would be that the clearance below the UK plug socket is not huge, so the cord coming out the bottom of the plug has to bend sharply to avoid the surface the transformer rests on. It's not a big issue though, and we've been using them for a couple of months with no problems. Don't throw away the replacement fuses that come with it, though; I've already had to replace one of them.

Buy Power Bright VC200W Voltage Transformer 200 Watt Step Up/Down 110 Volt - 220 Volt Now

After reading reviews on bad experiences with the transformers, I decided to buy this 200W transformer even though my sewing machine takes up 100W theoretically. (Do P (Watts)=I (max current of your device) *V (your device voltage 110V/220V... ))

It's been nearly two months now and it has worked fine for me. So I'm quite pleased with it.

Latest update (12 March 2013): Recently I found out that the speed of my sewing machine increased quite a bit. I'm not sure if this is related to the transformer. It makes the sewing machine shake quite a bit even if I pressed the pedal very gently.

These radios were bought as a test for other radios from the midland product line. They were used nov 5-12 2012 on private land approx. 800 acres 200 of which is wooded the rest farmland. There is nothing but hills and valleys here where my family hunts in the 200 wooded. We have no base station between the radios. The reception is great, clarity of the sound as well. We have since decided to purchase more of these rather than the more costly ones from midland radio line. They have done very well for us and will continue to use them time and time again. A+ product.

We bought these for our daughter for out at our summer vacation campsite, she loves them cause she and her friends can go run and play and we can check on there where abouts or they check in with us. we also use them at home when she goes to a friends house. the signal strength/range is very good she can go blocks away. she got lost looking for a friends house and called me asap i was able to talk to her while i went to find her, made it nice cause she told me the street sign where she was at and we found her right away. we decided to see how true the range was and took one to the video store which was 15 to 20 city blocks from my home and we got awesome reception, some static but not bad at all. the next test will be going further to see if they do have true range. if you want a nice product for this type of use i suggest it.

I purchased this as a gift for my 12-year old. We have had many of these in the past and they are great forms of communication for your kids in the neighborhood, at a theme park, or wherever. I know how to work them, I know how to charge the batteries and like many many other folks pointed out THE BATTERIES WILL NOT CHARGE. And like many other people I was foolish enough to think Midland would respond to my requests for support. They did not. Only postive here is that Amazon was easy on the return policy and they should be commended for it. Midland not a company worth trusting.

I bought this to use in a rental car in Italy. The electrical connection in the rental car was not on the dashboard but inbetween the passenger and driver's seats. The cord was too short to work. It would unwind-stretch to make the connection to the GPS on the windshield but the tension was so tight that the GPS was pulled off of the windshield. The cord was worthless during the entire trip.

No doubt about it, this is an expensive radio. For the $140 it costs for one of them, you can 4 consumer cheapo radios. But you get what you pay for. This is a pro quality radio. Give it the knuckle rap test. This thing is solid like a brick. It doesn't feel like a cheap TV remote control like most consumer family radios. When I first got it, I was disappointed because it was so small. It's about the size of all the other family radios. I thought great, I just paid a fortune for another dinky family radio. Don't be fooled though. This is best made, well built radio of it's size you will find short of $500+ professional gear. It's speaker gets way louder than you'd expect for its size. I also use it with an external speaker mic and it works superbly. The range and signal quality are hard to beat. The only better built radio you'll find is in the pro radio class, like a Motorola HT1000 which costs 3 times as much, is bigger, heavier and you have to have a professional program it for you. If you want one of the best made consumer GRMS/FRS radios that works out of the box, this one can't be beat. The battery life is awesome too, I could ski for two days without charging it, maybe longer. I'm sorry I underestimated it by its size, in the real world it's a winner.

**UPDATE** This review is for the GMRS consumer version of this radio. This listing is the business/commercial version of the radio. Still a great radio for business use, but if you're looking for the GMRS version, it may have been discontinued or you may have to find it somewhere else, I don't see it on Amazon now. Which is too bad.
